Communities Love Local Chambers
Chambers have a very necessary role
in a community that can be undervalued
but not duplicated. First and foremost,
chambers are incubators of small businesses.
Chambers take into the fold a new business
start-up and connect that organization with
those important to the business’s growth.
Small businesses become large businesses,
pay taxes and employ local people. Is that
important to a community – you bet!. We
at McHenry Area Chamber are experienced
professionals dedicated to growing new and expanding businesses. We
are good at this! Another value added by chambers to a community is
that we showcase its businesses through events and activities increasing
the area's value of residing in an area plus supporting local business
growth through connecting businesses with the community that might
not know them. We at McHenry Area Chamber produce many target
marketed events such as Fiesta Days, EXPOS and Scrambles. Our
members gain through connecting with the community and other
businesses and residents gain by having a fun filled event to be proud
of. Third, not often thought about is that chamber staff through
their dedication to a local area, act as advisors on boards of multiple
organizations because of our commitment to making a town better.
McHenry Area Chamber is involved in the Downtown Business
Association and the Riverwalk Foundation as we believe both are

Christmas
provides sole support of this program.
The morning sun glistens off a fresh coat of snow that
fell the night before. It’s December 25 and, inside, children
all around McHenry are eagerly awakening and bounding
from their beds. They jump into their slippers and rush into
the hall before they complete pulling on their bathrobes.
They rush to their living rooms driven by anxious anticipation. There, they come to a sudden stop. With eyes as wide as
opals, they take in the mounds of festively wrapped presents
under the tree.
It’s one of the most anticipated days of the year for
children, well, unless there are no presents under the
tree, if there is a tree. For those children, children from
area families that have struggled with a sluggish economy
and financial hardship, December 25 is just another day.
In recognition of these less fortunate children, MC3,
the McHenry Area Chamber business networking group
works to support area law-enforcement officials who are
making a difference in the lives of those less-fortunate
children.
For the ninth year in a row, MC3 is sponsoring Shop
With A Cop in the McHenry area. The event is cowww.mchenrychamber.com
ordinated by McHenry County Police Charities The
McHenry Area Chamber is proud to announce that
MC3 provides the sole support for this needed program
which has gained over $76,000 through this chamber
group.
“It’s really touching that, each year, police officers will
tell stories of children who were so busy buying things
for their families that the officer had to remind them to
buy something for themselves,” David Lammers, a financial adviser with Edward Jones and president of MC3.

Network

Why do Frank and I network?
Some of you don’t know us but
many do. The reason you know us
is through networking. We have
found this to be the most successful
company building tool we have at
our disposal.
Frank and I are owners of LegalShield, a company providing
affordable identity theft protection
and legal advice for consumers. We
network because we want to grow
our community connections of possible clients. The more people that
you know, who know what you do,
the more referrals you will receive.
Successful businesses are built on referrals. But Frank and I take networking a step further. We believe in
the “givers gain” philosophy. This is
based on the principle of reciprocity. In our business, we dedicate
ourselves to giving referrals to our
fellow networkers and, introducing
people we already know to others. Frank and I do this rather than
focusing on getting business for
ourselves. In the long run caring for
others achieves great success.
Networking is actually WORK.
But there are several benefits that
go along with this kind of “work”.
First, you are perfecting your relationship building skills. Getting
out there and introducing yourself
and your business to strangers soon
teaches you the best way to get your
message across. You learn how to
communicate. You learn how to
connect others. At first it can be
hard, but soon it becomes second
nature. Also, mixing with people
who have to rely on their own
resources to survive and who have to
think outside the box to get an edge
on their competitors is always an
inspiration.
Finally, although we focus on
business, networking can bring you
wonderful new friends. It can’t fail!
You share ideas and enthusiasm for
business with like-minded people.
Strong friendships combined with
strong alliances are powerful in
building your network.
McHenry Community Fellowship Breakfast Draws Town Together
McHenry Community Fellowship Breakfast was brought to our
area from Nancy Henningfield
of First Midwest Bank. Held for
the first time on November 24th,
2014, this free event fosters good
will while gathering at McHenry
High School West Campus the
young and old, new to the area
and McHenry lifers, as well as
rich and those who would like to
be richer, all joining in a sense of
community pride and gratitude.
Said Nancy, “It is a time for the
community to gather and be
grateful and thankful that we
live in a town as wonderful as
McHenry. We are blessed with
great civic groups that help so
many organizations, a thriving
school system and people that
pride themselves on giving back
to the community in which they
live."
The first McHenry Community Fellowship Breakfast featured
Kit Carstens, a solid business
entrepreneur who discussed his
volunteerism in the area and the
importance of others taking part
in the blessings that overflow from
giving back to McHenry.
The second Community
Fellowship Breakfast will be
held on Wednesday, November 25th again at McHenry
West Campus, staring at 7:30
am. Free tickets can be picked
up at sponsors; McHenry High
School West Campus, Kiwanis
Club of McHenry, Rotary Club

Favorite Christmas Cookies
from Chambermaids Kay, Jane, Kathy
and Tammy
Cornflake Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2/3 cup cornflakes
2/3 cup chocolate chips
Directions:
Beat butter and sugar together.
Add egg and vanilla.
Combine flour and baking soda
Gradually beat flour mixture into butter mixture.
Stir in cornflakes and chocolate chips.
Drop by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake
at 350° for 11-15 minutes. Cool on wire rack.
This is a cookie, I love. The crispiness added by the cornflakes
provides a new dimension to the traditional chocolate chip
cookie. A friend of mine gave me a bucket of these superb
cookies after my 1990 knee operation. She told me it had a
secret ingredient which I never could tug from her. Ah then
the internet, which is definitely good for some things including
recipes.! Peanut Butter-Chocolate No-Bake Cookies
Kathy Pengilly, Accounts Manager
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup smooth peanut butter
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
Large pinch kosher salt
Directions:
Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment.
Bring the sugar, milk, butter and cocoa to a boil in a medium
saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, then let boil for
1 minute. Remove from the heat.
Add the oats, peanut butter, vanilla and salt, and stir to combine.
Drop teaspoonfuls of the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet,
and let sit at room temperature until cooled and hardened, about
30 minutes.
Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Lemon Sugar Cookies
Tammy Mittelstadt, Membership Director
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
5 tablespoons reduced-calorie stick margarine, softened
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
2 drops yellow food coloring (optional)
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 2 non-stick baking sheets with
vegetable cooking spray. Set aside.
In a small bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In a
medium mixing bowl, using an electric mixer set on medium
speed, cream margarine and 1/3 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in lemon peel and food coloring. Alternately beat in flour
mixture and lemon juice until well blended.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls and roll in 2 tablespoons of
sugar. Place 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Using the
tines of a fork, press a crisscross pattern onto each cookie. Bake
until edges are lightly golden, about 10 minutes. Transfer cookies
to a wire rack and cool completely.
Almond Crescent Cookies
Jane Manny, Events Director
Ingredients:
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons almond extract
2 1/3 cups flour
1 cup ground almonds
1 cup powdered sugar
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Spray several cookie sheets with cooking spray.
With a mixer, beat the butter with sugar until light and fluffy.
Add vanilla extract and almond extract, beat until incorporated.
Stir in the flour and almonds. Work flour mixture into a firm
dough.
Working with 1 tablespoon of dough at a time, shape a long in the
middle is thicker than both ends. Bend dough log into a crescent
shape.
Place on greased cookie sheets and repeat until all dough is used.
Bake 12-15 minutes or until light brown.
Sift powdered sugar into a small shallow bowl.
While the cookies are still warm , roll the crescents in the
powdered sugar.
Cool on racks.

The Adams Auto Body and Service Center Story
Jay Adams’ earliest memories revolve around a two-car
space along Lincoln Road.
“When I was a little kid, dad was fixing cars in the
garage,” Jay said of his father, Jim Adams. “He put me to
work painting soda cans.”
Jay and his siblings learned the business from the
ground up as their father built Jim Adams Auto Body
from a part-time, at-home enterprise to a full-time commercial success.
The business has grown from one to two employees
working on 50 to 100 cars a year in the late 1950s to
one spanning four McHenry County facilities. At the
McHenry shop alone, 24 employees work on eight to 10
cars a day in three buildings encompassing 28,000 square
feet.
Jim Adams’ childhood at Pine Lawn Farms fostered
his skills. “We learned to repair and weld our own farm
equipment,” the 78-year-old said. “As I got older, I got
interested in cars.”
Adams developed a reputation for quality work, drawing more and more customers.
After outgrowing the garage on Lincoln Road and
a facility at 2902 W. Elm St., Jim Adams completed a
7,000-square-foot shop on property he owned at 1811
W. Route 120. Still there, the shop is 3.5 times that size
today.
Jay Adams began buying his father out in the 1980s.
It still brings a smile, Jay said, to see a car leave the shop
looking like new after arriving dented and dinged.
“The whole business is based on customer service,” Jay
Adams said. “We’ve been lucky to be in this business.”
It’s a philosophy shared by brothers Dennis and Chris,
both of whom also own collision repair facilities started
with their father — Dennis in Lake in the Hills and Harvard, and Chris in Huntley.
“I am very proud of my boys,” Jim Adams said. “Their
mother and I couldn’t be prouder.”

Frame specialist Jim Henriksen works recently on a high-tech
machine that uses sonar to ensure repair accuracy. "I've been
in this business 40 years," said Henriksen, of McHenry. "Jay
Adams is one of the nicest people I've ever worked for."

County Residents. Home State Bank received its charter in 1915 and opened its doors with William Pinnow as President who was also at this time, the current Mayor of Crystal Lake.

McBark Dog Park opened up in 2013, as a
place where our canine friends can frolic, run,
sniff in unique places but all in all have a great
time. There was only one problem, the opening took place during a tough time in our still
locally recovering economy and not every furry
friend’s owner had the wherewithal to pay the
fees needed to operate the park.
Then came in Gary Lang Auto Group. With
a few phone calls and the blessings of Subaru,
Gary Lang Auto Group sponsored the park and
the fees were lowered to as little as $15 annually so all could afford to romp with their best
friend.
McBark Dog Park is located north of the
McHenry Kohls with parking in the existing lot
north of the store.
COLLIER HOUSE “Makes a Difference”
As our country reeled from the attacks
of 9/11, I listened to my then 18 year-old
son proudly tell me he had signed up for
the Army, “…to make a difference...”.
You might have noticed on the corner of
Green St. and John St. in McHenry an
honorary street named Spc. Collier E.
Barcus Way by The City of McHenry in
honor of Collier for the sacrifice he made
on July 8, 2004, losing his life during
combat in Samarra, Iraq.
Collier’s life and the sacrifice of our
loved ones killed in service to this great
country are honored by a place called
COLLIER HOUSE. My son had
planned to return to Wyoming and start
his own ranch after he left the Army. To
honor that dream, COLLIER HOUSE
was built. Located in Collier’s beloved
Wyoming, COLLIER HOUSE is a beautiful home overlooking the town of Clark,
Wyoming, surrounded by the Beartooth
Mountains. It is in Collier’s spirit “…
to make a difference” that COLLIER
HOUSE is a charitable organization pro-
viding free, short-term housing to families
in crisis, with a current campaign to have
“No Vacancies” at COLLIER HOUSE by
inviting GOLD STAR families (families
who have lost a loved one which serving
our country) across the Nation to visit.
Since the dedication ceremony on July
8, 2011, COLLIER HOUSE has proudly
hosted nearly 50 families, a mix of GOLD
STAR families and the families of young
men in alcohol and drug rehabilitation.
As an IRS 501 (c) (3) COLLIER HOUSE
relies on the monetary and time support
of many donors and volunteers.

helping to offset the operational
costs of COLLIER HOUSE,
a yearly Spaghetti Dinner is
planned on November 7, 2015
at the McHenry VFW. Please
plan to attend and join the
family, friends and volunteers of
COLLIER HOUSE “to make a
difference” by bringing Peace to
the world, one family at a time.
Green Before Green was Cool!
Rich and Steve Clements of Eagle
BioMass Inc. were well-established in
the "green" arena before green became
a “thing.” Richard and Steve were
named Illinois recycler of the year in
1994 while operating as Cornerstone
Material Recovery which serviced the
nation’s biggest home builders. Cornerstone’s collection method made
possible large scale material recovery
for recycling.
Eagle Biomass Inc. was birthed after
the housing bubble burst and economic collapse of 2008. The crash brought
changes to the company. Still involved
in demolition for organizations such as
LaSalle Bank and Construction Debris
Removal, Eagle BioMass is shift-
ing toward Renewable Energy. Eagle
BioMass Inc. brings a unique solution
to leverage current waste materials for
project feedstock not currently being
utilized. This technique brings much
sought after waste to energy capabilities to communities. By source separating and recycling a large percentage
of the construction debris, Eagle Biomass, Inc. is already LEED compliant
and ahead of the forthcoming state,
county, and local recycling regulations.
Steven and Rich began working for
the family owned construction firm
in high school. There they developed
an understanding of all facets of the
construction industry and realized the
need for waste hauling services.
In 1982 they entered the waste
industry, working for a major waste
hauling company. They observed a
need for a service that would segregate
the different types of waste and building debris which in turn would facilitate recycling. Thus Cornerstone was
born
Today each partner serves the company by capitalizing on their strengths.
Seven is President in charge of Administration and Finance. Richard is
Vice President in charge of Sales and
Marketing. Both owners have sons
working in the business so the next
generation of Eagle BioMass is in
good hands as well as to commitment
toward recycling.

I have always loved McHenry. As a lifelong resident I
have watched it grow dramatically in population over the
years, but it still feels like my hometown. The spirit of volunteerism in

Drew Buss Fits Well in the Driver’s Seat
More and more you see Drew
Buss taking over the responsibilities
of Buss Ford Lincoln, and it suits him
well.
Starting early in the business
at age 14 sweeping floors in the Parts
Department then moving to stocking
parts, Drew worked at the dealership throughout his McHenry High
School West Campus years. Then
slowly yet steadily Drew realized that
he wanted to be in the “family business.”
Unusual for a freshman, Drew went to Northwood University
with a certainty of mind as to his future career. It was there at
Northwood's specializing in Business Management that he networked with other future leaders and professionals with strong
ties to the auto industry. Drew returned to Buss Ford Lincoln
during breaks gaining increasing knowledge and skills through
working in different areas at the dealership. “I really worked
from the bottom up,” said Drew. “Was very good for me and
instilled a good work ethic within me.”
Drew is now General Manager of Buss Ford, handling day to
day responsibilities of the organization. Like his dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, Drew sees himself as part of a larger
family.
“Family is an important word at Buss Ford,” says Drew, as
he looks at the phrase Buss Ford Lincoln Family written on the
showroom wall. “This is what it is all about, the Buss Ford family is greater than just the Buss’s who own the dealership. It is our
employees whom are committed to and the larger community
family we are dedicated to serving.”
What is the future of the auto industry? “Well,” says Drew,
“first of all, vehicles are made better and better each year. But
there are challenges. A smart dealership needs to adapt to the internet. Interesting though, I still find with all the web shopping,
people still want to do business with
people. Customer service is the only
way to stay on top now.” Buss Ford

in the Ford industry, being voted #1
in the Chicagoland area in customer
satisfaction of all Ford dealerships.”
As Grandpa Ed Buss says, “I am
proud of my grandson. This is a
tough business, but Drew is thriving
on it.” I think we can all agree with
Grandpa that with Drew at the helm,

In 1979, the McHenry Parks and
Recreation Department was formed as
a division of the City of McHenry to
develop the parks in this community
and to begin offering a wide range of
recreation programs. Today, the scope
of McHenry Parks & Recreation is
vast, and there are new ventures on the
horizon.
McHenry Parks & Recreation
strives to provide families with quality
programming that promote healthy
lifestyles and nurturing environments.
Three seasonal program catalogs list
numerous athletic, aquatic, fitness and
general recreation activities for all ages.
Program offerings start with parent
Main Entrance
and child classes. Parents work on
developing their child’s motor skills,
cognitive recognition, and socialization skills. Yet not sitting still with its
changing and growing community,
the parks and recreation department is
now viewing an entirely new opportunity to enrich resident’s lives In the spring of 2016, the McHenry
Parks & Recreation Department will
be celebrating the grand opening of
the new 18,200 square foot McHenry
Recreation Center. Located on Municipal Drive, the state of the art facility
will include a 4,500 square foot fitness
center, and feature the latest in cardio
and strength training equipment. The
opening of the facility will allow for
continued creation and expansion of
youth and adult recreation and leisure
offerings to the community.
Additionally, the facility will have
two dedicated studio spaces for group
exercise classes and instructional
dance. Members and visitors can
expect to find the latest trends in the
fitness industry along with skilled
personal trainers and onsite babysitting services. Other facility highlights
include the inclusion of three multipurpose rooms, including a catering
kitchen, which are all available for
reception and party rental.
