Treasurers Report….
May continued the trend of an overall negative budget performance.
Golf was better than budget due to our water bill coming in well below what was expected, but not enough to offset losses in both the general
category and Food & Beverage.
The general category (Administration, Loop Road, Maintenance and Security) experienced a negative budget performance solely due to the fact that since we pay
Securitas on a bi-weekly basis, two times a year we have three payments come
due in a month; it all evens out in the end (as do the water bills) and is not a matter
for concern. For the first three months of the year the category is almost $10,000 to
the good.
Golf, despite missing the revenue target, showed a very strong month due to the
water bill mentioned earlier. For the year to date, Golf is almost $10,000 worse
than budgeted. As I promised last month besides looking at revenues against
budget projections we are also carefully monitoring them against real numbers from
last year; to date, golf revenues are $6,780 behind last year.
Food & Beverage met revenue targets, but showed a loss due to higher than
expected expenses-mostly labor. For the year to date, F&B is about $15,000 worse
than budgeted. Revenue figures look good at $4,689 ahead of last year.
Not much change in the status of the Reserve Account, with cash and investments
of $3,589,869. That number will change significantly in the next few months as we
deal with the golf course perimeter wall and fencing, the restaurant renovation and
some smaller projects.
Aged owner balances remain at a very low level; overdue assessments are less
than 1%.
Available cash balances are up slightly despite the negative budget performance.
That may sound odd, but March-May are traditionally good months for us and this
year is no exception; it’s just not as good as we expected.

Dear Residents,
In June, Chef Richard Alfaro resigned his position at Los Prados to
pursue another opportunity. I am pleased to announce that Sheila
Conway was promoted to fill this vacancy. We are looking forward to having
Chef Sheila bring her ideas and enthusiasm to our operation.
Also, Judi Haines, our Accounting Administrator, announced her retirement. We
have hired Tara Tunstall to be her successor. Tara will be starting in the middle of
July and Judi will remain with us for a period of time to train Tara on the many
details required of this important position. (5621 Divot)
On another note, we will be having a special open board meeting on Tuesday, July
12th at 5:00pm to approve the restaurant/bar renovation plans.

Accolades for our volunteers who placed flags for the Memorial Day
week-end. Our display was beautiful; many drivers passing expressed their
thanks. By Sunday AM, the whole section of flags by our entrance stop sign
had been taken; if anyone would wish to have a flag or two to display at their
home, please contact me rather than ruin our display and hard work!
Our next get together will be on Friday, July 1 at 7 PM to place flags in honor
of the 4th of July. We place flags at our entrances plus ALL AROUND THE
CIRCLE. We will meet at Carolyn Campbell’s home, 5301 Oakbank Court in Palm
View Village; we’ll work in teams of two with a golf cart. We need a large
number of volunteers to accomplish our goal. Please everyone pass the word
and invite your friends and neighbors to help us show our pride in our Community and Country as well as honor our Independence.

The Clubhouse Usage Form states that if you are a no show for your game three

If you show up and you are not on the schedule for that day a table will not be
set up for you.
Please check the schedule at the front desk to where your game is being set up.
You will be asked to move if you are in the wrong room and/or table or if

Pool Rules
Pool furniture is the property of the association and is not to be
removed from pool area at any time.
No glass containers or bottles (including lotions) are permitted in the pool
area.
No Inflatables of any kind allowed in the pools.
Life guards are not provided; therefore, use of pool is at your own risk.
No solo swimming is allowed.
Children under the age of 14 years must be accompanied by an adult. Children
over the age of 14 must have a valid Los Prados ID.
Appropriate swimming attire must be worn at all times. No “cut offs” are allowed.
Pool hours are posted at each pool. No activity is permitted at the pools other
than during pool posted hours.
Operation and use of swimming pools are subject to regulations issued by Nevada
State Board of Health and Clark County Health Department, which are posted at
pools. Additional rules for the Family Pool Hot Tub are posted on the fence
beside the Spa.
All children that require diapers must wear rubber pants and must wear an
appropriate swim suit.
Each homeowner is issued a key when they register and no one should open the
pool gate for people coming to the pool without a key.
The security officer’s can ask the name and address of people entering the pool
to verify they are a homeowners or guests of a homeowner. Homeowners must
have a valid Los Prados ID.
Homeowners are responsible for the actions of their guests.
All coolers and closed containers are subject to search by Security.

Even as temperatures soar into triple digits, even as many of our members depart for cooler
climates, the hearty ladies of Los Prados Niners are still out golfing!
We had a nice turnout for our June tournament, the “Great Eight.” Each golfer could eliminate
their worst hole when calculating the score. The results were:

signs, don’t drive where prohibited, and keep up with group in front of you, not ahead of

Los Prados Men’s Club…..
This issue of the Men's Club newsletter articles addresses
slow play, and is appropriate not only for Men's Club
members, but for play at Los Prados in general. The following is from the May/
June 2001 issue of FORE Magazine, which is published by the SCGA.
YOU MIGHT BE A SLOW PLAYER IF...

You might be a slow player If .you find that you are reading this article and it is
not attached to a magazine. I will explain later.
It seems like every time I read anything having to do with the problems in golf,
right at the top of the list is slow play. For many golfers, slow play can ruin an
otherwise pleasurable round. It occurred to me that one of the major contributing
factors to slow play may be that a slow player may not know that he is slow. We
can at least fix this problem. With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy here we go.
You might be a slow player if... you stand around on the tee box shooting the
breeze with your group when the group ahead of you has hit their second (or third)
shots.*
You might be a slow player if... you refuse to leave the putting green until you
have dutifully recorded each and every score on your scorecard. Please proceed to
the next teeing ground and do your score keeping there so the group behind you
can hit in.
You might be a slow player if... you don’t even think about yardage or club
selection until it's your turn to play. Please find your yardage and make your club
selection while the previous player is hitting so you are ready to play when it is
your turn.
Los Prados Men’s Club Continue…..
You might be a slow player if... you sit in your cart, which is 20 yards from your ball, until
your cart-mate hits, then you drive to your ball, get out of the cart, look for your yardage and
go through your whole routine. Please get out of your cart. estimate your yardage, take the
club you think you will use and one club shorter and one dub longer, then walk those 20 yards
and be ready to hit when it is your turn. Your cart-mate can then drive over to pick you up. Oh,
and by the way, hold those three clubs in your hand after your cart-mate picks you up. It saves
even more time if you wait and replace them when it is time to make your next club selection.
You might be a slow player if... you wait until it is your turn to putt to study your line, plumb
-bob from above and below, crouch down and do the Tiger-shade-the-eyes thing, and finally
miss that 10 footer. Please get as much of your prep work as possible while others are doing
the same - no, not while they are putting but while they are also lining things up. You can
learn most of what you need to know just observing the other putts.
You might be a slow player if... you find that your group is almost always “out of position.”
This means that the group ahead of you is on the green of a par 5 before your group has
played your tee shots, or you have an open par 4 before your group has cleared the tee. Never
should any player take longer than 40 seconds to play a shot. Start the timing when it is your
turn to play and there is nothing preventing you from playing,
Now. if you play golf with someone who possesses one or more of the above mentioned traits,
here is how we attempt to fix the slow play problem. Tear this article from the magazine and
put it in that player’s locker or in his golf bag, or mail it to him (or her). Once the slow player
realizes he is a slow player the traits are easily eliminated. In the immortal words of Tommy
Bolt, “Miss ‘em quick.” (5601 Segolilly)

For July, we will read The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian.

BEST SELLING BOOK QUIZ
This was a difficult quiz for various reasons including reluctance by publishers to
reveal full sales, poor records on early sales of old classics, and nature of some the best
sellers as the Bible, Quran, Book of Mormon, Dictionaries, along with such books as
the Little Red Book by Chairman Mao. With those exclusions, can you name the following novels included
on most selling lists?
1) A story set in the era of the French revolution and dealing with lives of people living in different European
urban areas and how they cope with the class struggles of that time;
2) A classical tale of common man who loses his sanity and along with his valet sets out on a quest to revive
chivalry, undo wrongs, and bring justice to the world;
3) A mystery novel based on a series of murders on an island. Each death is related to a verse of an old
nursery rhyme;
4) A modern novel that caused great controversy in its handling of the Catholic Church and its history of
dealing with sensitive issues such as the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene;
5)This 1951 novel became a classic in its coverage of teenage rebellion and such other issues as identity,
belonging, loss, and connection;
6) This is the first of a hugely successful series about an orphan who discovers that he is a wizard living in an
ordinary world;
7) This 1975 WW II based novel deals with the attempt of a team of German paratroopers to land in Britain
and kidnap Churchill;
8) This Book relates to the adventures of a Jewish Prince who becomes enslaved by the Romans and
eventually becomes a charioteer;

BASEBALL BOOKS
Now that Major League Baseball is in full swing; here are a few baseball related books you might enjoy.
The first is “When Baseball Went to War” (2008) which was edited by Todd Anton and Bill Nowlin with a
foreword by Curt Schilling. It comes with a CD on which major league players talk about their WWII
experiences. The book contains interesting highlight on the war service of such major leaguers as Ted
Williams, Warren Spahn, Yogi Berra, and Bob Feller among others. Other features are include stories about
the All-American Girls Baseball League and the 1945 GI World Series.
An unusual Baseball related novel is “The Catcher was a Spy - The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg” (1994) by
Nicholas Dawidoff. Moe Berg was a major league catcher for five teams (1923-1939), a coach for two years,
graduated from two Ivy League schools, had a law degree, spoke 12 languages, and in addition worked as a
spy for the OSS and its successor the CIA. At one time, two of his baseball cards were on display at the CIA.
His abilities on the field were limited, he usually was a second string player, but his mental abilities were
amazing. He was involved in a number of very important espionage missions was able to accomplish such
achievements as speaking Japanese after a three week visit to that country.

Rosemary Chicken Kabobs
Ingredients









1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup ranch dressing
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
1 tablespoon white sugar, or to taste (optional)
Directions
1. In a medium bowl, stir together the olive oil, ranch dressing, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, salt, lemon juice, white vinegar, pepper, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes. Place
chicken in the bowl, and stir to coat with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 30
minutes.
2. Preheat the grill for medium-high heat. Thread chicken onto skewers and discard marinade.
3. Lightly oil the grill grate. Grill skewers for 8 to 12 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer
pink in the center, and the juices run clear
Scrumptious frosted
fudgy brownies
Ingredients
 8 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened baking chocolate
 1 cup butter
 5 eggs
 3 cups white sugar
 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
 2 cups chopped walnuts
 1 1/4 cups white sugar
 1 cup heavy cream
 5 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened baking chocolate
 1/2 cup butter, softened
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 13x9-inch baking pan. Place 8
ounces of baking chocolate with 1 cup of butter in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave
on High until the chocolate is soft and the butter has melted, about 2 minutes. Stir to mix.
2. Place the eggs, 3 cups of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract in a large bowl, and beat
with an electric mixer on high speed for 2 minutes. Reduce the mixer speed to low, and
beat in the melted butter-chocolate mixture. Beat in the flour until just combined (do not
overmix), and stir in the chopped walnuts. Spread the batter in the prepared pan.
3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with fudgy
crumbs, about 35 minutes. Cool in the pan before frosting.
4. To make frosting, combine 1 1/4 cup of sugar with the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat, and stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer, about 3
minutes. Reduce the heat to low, and let the mixture simmer for 7 minutes without stirring.
5. Remove the cream mixture from the heat, and stir in 5 ounces of baking chocolate and 1/2
cup butter, stirring to melt and blend the chocolate. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract; whisk
until smooth. Place the frosting in the refrigerator and stir every few minutes until the
frosting is chilled and thick, about 30 minutes. Frost the cooled brownies, and cut into
squares.
