Treasurers Report….
While all departments were slightly (-$15K) worse than budget in
December, they are comfortably (+$64K) above budget after ten
months of our fiscal year. That second figure will likely grow a little bit
by the end of February.
The reserve account remains in great shape with a cash and invested
total of $3,334,560. In the next few months the Board will be making
decisions on repair/replacement of the golf course perimeter fencing
and we expect that to involve significant expenditures from reserves
over the next couple of years.
Available cash balance increased slightly from last month to
$778,911which is virtually identical to what it was a year ago. As I
have said before our goal is to gradually bring this down and that is the
way the 16-17 budget was set; budgeted expenses exceed budgeted
revenues by $77,234 which we expect will result in a decrease in cash
on hand.
Aged owner balances increased about $9,000 from last month. For
the year, overdue assessments are essentially unchanged at an
enviable rate of less than 1.2%. The $30,000 increase so far in this
fiscal year is entirely due to uncollected violation fines.
On January 19, 2016 the recommended budget for 16-17 was
approved; the monthly assessment rate remains unchanged at $170.

We have two special events this month:
Superbowl Party on Sunday, February 7th
Sweetheart Buffet on Saturday, February 13th
We are in the process of obtaining bids for the repair of the fencing on the golf course and
loop road. This will be a large project and we hope to select a contractor at the February
board meeting.
The Detention Basin Committee is busy investigating ideas for this area and what is feasible
for Los Prados.

President’s Column...
Taking an interest in your community can be a very rewarding experience. We need volunteers who will work
for the best interest of our entire Association. There are many areas where you can contribute to it's operation,
maintenance and quality of life. I urge every homeowner to find your area of interest and contribute in keeping our community the best in the Las Vegas Valley.
The 2016 board elections are right around the corner. The votes will be tallied and winners announced
at the March open board meeting on the 15th. Please take the opportunity to cast your vote(s) as a means of

I am Seeking a fourth tern as a member of
the Board of Directors because, while I am
proud of what we have accomplished over
the past year, there are still some goals that
we have not been reached and I think I can
make a valuable contribution to our collective effort to do so in the near future. Those
goals include:
1. Reducing the dependency on
assessments to balance the golf and
Food & beverage budgets. Two years
ago I said assessments are 41% of the
revenue in the golf budget and I’d like
to get it down to 33%. In the 16-17
budget, the comparable figure is
37%; we are making progress.
Similarly, I said assessments were
16% of the Food & Beverage budget
and that my short term goal was to get
that under 10%; in 16-17 its’s 11%,
almost there—how low can we go?
2. Developing and implementing a long
range plan to maintain and improve
our capital assets. Two priority items
for me are the wrought iron fencing
and the exterior walls.
3. The large increase in assessments for 12-13 allowed us to decrease assessments in 13-14, freeze
them for 14-15, 15-16 and hopefully for a year or two more. But a freeze can’t continue forever.
At some point an increase is necessary; when that time comes I want to be sure everyone
under stands our budgeting process and has faith in the Board that if they are asking for an
increase, it must be necessary.
While I accept most people will decide whether or not to vote for me based on my record on the
Board these past seven years, I’d like to offer a few highlights of my 36+ year career in education
which began as a teacher of mathematics, moved into building administration and concluded as
Superintendent of Schools. In the last role I served as both chief executive officer and chief financial
officer - very relevant experiences to my role as Board member. I also served as Chairman of the
Compensation Insurance I still consult on those Boards. I also was an Executive Board member and
ultimately President of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
I ask for your support, will always listen to what you have to say, and do my best to act in the interest
of all the homeowners.

I am seeking a term on the HOA Board of
Directors to assist in making decisions
regarding the maintenance and upkeep of
Los Prados property.
My wife, Barbara and I were transferred
to Las Vegas in 1995 by my company,
Consolidated Freightways. We decided to
purchase our present home in Los Prados
and have very much enjoyed or community.
I was employed by Consolidated
Freightways for 30 years as a driver and
safety facilitator. I was responsible for
conducting and forcing safety protocol in
hazmet material and safe driving.
I believe my experience and common
sense will help in maintain Los Prados’
physical assets.
My Goal as a Board member would be to reduce the cost of operation while keeping home
values as high as possible. My wife and I feel like Los Prados is the best kept facility in Las
Vegas. Therefore, I believe I need to search all necessary avenues to insure the Community
is well maintained at the Lowest possible cost.

I wish to be a Board member because I want to
be involved in continuing the work this and the
past Board’s have accomplished to make Los
Prados a very unique community. When you
drive through the gates into our community you
have a sense of pride and peace. It makes me
very proud to bring family and friends here for
the first time, as they are amazed that such a
place exists in the hub bub of todays world and
much less in Los Prados.
I feel it is vital to work together to bring unity
and uniqueness to Los Prados. I look forward to
working together using my talents and past
experiences to make this happen. After all, we
have to own up to our motto of being the “best
kept secret in Las Vegas”.
I moved to Los Prados fifteen years ago from
Whittier California where I worked for a small
savings and Loan as an Assistant Vice
President/Assistant Controller. I was there 25
years and saw many changes in the industry and
was part of those changes and the growth of our
company. When I left we had grown to over a
billion strong and were traded on the NADAQ
exchange. When I stared with the company we
were three branches in Whitter only.
I served on the Los Prados Board several years ago where I was asked to start the Compliance
Committee and I also served on the Architectural Committee. I am a long time member of the
Women’s Club where I have served on the Board, worked on Christmas decorations, bake sale,
rummage sale, and various other projects as they came up. I also served on the Palm View Village
as its treasurer for three years.
I am a member of St. George’s Angelcan church where I take part in many volunteer/outreach
projects. I have two children, my son Buddy and his wife live here in Los Prados with their two sons
and ans a daughter, Stacey , in Chino with three grown children. I am proud to say I have two
grandchildren who have attended UNLV one on a baseball scholarship and one on a softball
scholarship.
I am Looking forward to serving on the Board here at Los Prados. I hope on Election Day you
will remember my name, Carol Moreira, and vote for me . I will be honored to serve on your Board.

On December 17, 2015 I was appointed
to the current Los Prados HOA Board of
Directors to fill the position left vacant
by the resignation of John Dempsy. I was
honored to have been appointed to this
position and I would very much like to
continue service the community therefore
I respectively submit my candidacy form
to continue as a Director on the Los
Prados HOA Board.
I fell in love with this community long
before I moved here. I was introduced to
Los Prados by a friend who brought me
here to play golf. When I had the
opportunity to buy a house here I was
thrilled. I have been a homeowner in Los
Prados for the past 6.5 years. For the past
4 years I have served on the Cedar Point
Board of Directors, in the past I served as
the President of the Los Prados Women's
Golf Association, I am a current
member of the Los Prados Women’s club.
I feel I have the Knowledge and capabilities to assist the Board in their decision making
capacity and to bring a new outlook to the Board concerning the wishes of homeowners within
the Los Prados Community.
I have years of management experience in Human Resources area and various other jobs
requiring me to make decisions, along with supervisory experience and experience in
managing a staff of employees. I have had government secret clearance and handled
confidential government documents, therefore I understand the importance of confidentiality
when it comes to a position such as a Board member. I believe that all questions should be
answered to the best of our abilities but only after thorough investigation to obtain the right
answer.
During my years here in Los Prados I have gained the respect of many homeowners in the
community both golfers and non golfers.
My Goals are: To serve the interest of the homeowners of Los Prados to the best of my
ability and to provide fair and impartial judgement on issues that may arise.

Los Prados Men’s Club…..
Saturday, January 9th, was a day that tested the patience and stamina of 64
Men's Club stalwart golfers. Our normal 31/2 hour rounds turned into 5 hour
rounds. Be that as it may, a hearty congratulations to Jay Honore' for his hole
-in-one on the 15th hole.
Weather permitting, we will be going back to our regular tee times in
February. As usual, please remember to let our Starter Hut attendant or the Pro shop know how
many golfers you will have on the following Saturday. So far this seems to be working fairly
well, and the pro shop is able to book some additional outside play on our competition days.
As you well know, I send out a lot of emails relative to the Men's Club. However, some of our
members have not been receiving them due to suspected spam content. I assure you that I have
not been sending spam (although some may not agree with that). I'm taking some steps on my end
to correct that. On your end, if you're a Men's Club Member, please make sure that
[email protected] is added to your contact list.
We are all probably trying to improve our games, or maybe just correct some problems that have
crept into our swings. There's no better way to do this than consult with your local PGA golf
professional. But sometimes it's too cold or wet or, heaven forbid, snowy. There is an excellent
golf instruction website that some of you may have already discovered. The website offers daily
video tips, brought to you by several golf instructors.

see great Christmas displays.
Our board has set the dates for this years events. The dates are as follows: Spring Fling &
Wine Tasting 5/1/16, Octoberfest 10/16/16, Holiday party 12/4/16. Please mark your
calendars. We always strive to have events, which welcome all residents, renters, guests and
children.

Our Annual Homeowners meeting was held on January 5th at 6:30 in the Los Prados Clubhouse. Elections were
held for the 2016 Board of Directors results are as follows: Irv Kalet President, Jim Manos, Secretary, Trudy Reimer,
Treasurer, Larry Sonin, Director, and our new Director will be Toni Trombecky. The Board of Directors and
homeowners present shared their thanks to Cheryl Wiehl for her service. For the past 4 years she has served this
community as Board Treasurer, assisting and welcoming many residents to the community, and has spent countless
hours in the planning and hosting of the community’s annual Holiday party at her residence. She is a valued member of
this community and the future holds the same as she turns her efforts to serving the entire Los Prados community.
Several homeowners asked that we consider new landscapers, therefore, a committee of homeowners chaired by
Edie Sweetwine will begin to solicit bids for landscapers. Gerry Northfield of Performance Cam will assist in preparing
a Request for Proposal (RFP). The committee will seek at least 3 bids and present them to the Board. If you are
interested in serving on this committee please contact Edie at 702-395-3433. If not, still please mark your calendar and
come on out to the April 5th Board meeting to find out what is happening about our landscape services.
A few owners at the Annual meeting stated they did not get the 2016 Budget Ratification, 2016 Board of
Directors meeting Schedule, and January 5th Annual Meeting – Election of Directors packets that were mailed out in
NOV & DEC of 2015. If you did not receive such a packet please contact Gerry at Performance Cam at 702-362-0318
and he will be happy to provide one. Your Board feels it is important that the HOA is kept informed of your correct
mailing address so the HOA can make sure you are being kept informed of what is going on.

Results of the recent re-rating of the course by the SNGA will be reflected on the
next scorecard purchase. In the meantime our monthly SNGA GHIN updates are being computed using the new ratings. For more information, please see Mr. Dunlop in
the Pro-Shop.
From the Course Superintendent:
I would like to address a couple of issues on the current golf course condition:
1. Greens:
We have a problem with old cups (the area where the hole was previously cut.) during the
winter when the ground freezes it makes it difficult to install the fresh cut plug into the old
hole. This happens because the ground is very hard in the mornings. When setting the plug it
feels like it is set perfectly even to the surface. As the temperature rises during the day so
does the ground, ever so slightly. This causes a high plug that can result in an uneven putting
surface. As the temperature begins to rise we will then be able to repair the high or low plug.
We will also be able to roll the greens to improve putting.
2. Brown spots on golf course:
The reason for the “spotty look” is because of the weather.
After overseeding the golf course with Rye grass seed, it is vital to keep the grass on the
wetter side so that the Winter grass can get established. This Fall, October and early November, we had record high temperatures. While keeping the ground moist two things happen:
first the Rye grass looks healthy but the watering also promotes the Bermuda grass to thrive
and it competes with the young Rye. Bermuda grass when temperatures are warmer than
normal will take over the Rye in areas, which result in a patchy look after a few freezes. At
that time the Bermuda grass becomes dormant and browns out. Next I will compare the winter frost delays between 2014 and 2015 (as you recall the Winter of 2014 was very mild).

I hope this helps everyone understand what can happen with a warm Fall and a colder than normal
Winter. Over the Winter holidays we could not water the golf course for 12 days in a row because of the
cold temperatures that stuns the Rye grass. Hopefully the remainder of the Winter will not be as harsh.

LOS PRADOS BOOK CLUB
In February we will read Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier. It begins:

MOVIE MISTAKES
Mistakes are common in movies. Name these movies that had serious mistakes.
1) This 1951 Hitchcock classic staring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint has a shoot-out in a
café. A young boy in the background not looking at the action puts his fingers in his ears before the gunfire starts;
2) In this 1985 action movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger chases down a villain driving a yellow Porsche which is wrecked
on the left side. Arnold commandeers the car and drives it away and it has been fully repaired;
3) In this 2000 Roman Epic staring Russell Crowe, a chariot overturns and a gas cylinder is revealed;
4) In this 1992 crime classic staring among others Keitel and Roth, a police officer is tortured. During the scene, his
hands switch forth from being cuffed in front and back;
5) In this 2003 movie, Fodo has a scar on his face for part of the film. Problem is that it keeps changing position and
size;
6) In this 1977 first of a classic series, a Storm Trooper bursting into a room hits his head on the doorframe;
7) In this 1978 pirate movie, there is a scene where Captain Jack Sparrow says “on deck, you scabrous dogs”. In the scene, a film crew member dressed in a tee shirt and cowboy hat is clearly visible;
8) This 1979 Vietnam War classic among others stared Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando. It tops the Movie Mistakes list
with a total of 561 mistakes including crew appearances and continuity errors;
9) This 1989 movie is the third in the Indiana Jones series. It is based around a search for the Holy Grail and has a mere
204 mistakes;
10) This 1990 installment of an action series has only 78 mistakes. One of the most outstanding has our hero John
McClane making a payphone call (remember them) from Dulles airport in DC. However, the phone is clearly labeled as
a “Pacific Bell” telephone.

HORROR NOVELS
On occasion, I am asked why there is no separate shelf for “Horror” genre of novels. The answer is that with the exception of novels by Stephen King and Dean Koontz, there have been no donations of this type. However, if you are extremely brave and do not spook easily, I suggest the horror works of H. P, Lovecraft. He is considered by many including Stephen King to be one of the all-time great writers in this field. In my mind, he makes the works of King and
Koontz seem like fairly tales. Some of Lovecraft’s novels are ‘The Colour Out of Space”, “Dunwich Horror” and “Call
of the Cthulhu”. These are the scariest stories I have ever read. I have promised myself that I will read a Lovecraft novel - only in daytime - in a fenced backyard - armed - and surrounded by Pit Bulls and German Shepherds. I believe all
his books are out of print and will require some searching to find.
GOOD READ
For some reason, I never had read anything by the mystery writer - Phillip Margolin. However, that is now changed.
Just finished “Woman with a Gun” (2014) and really enjoyed it. Story tells how a novelist is captivated by a black and
white photo of a woman in a wedding dress holding a gun behind her back. As he investigates the photo, he is pulled
into a web of lies and murders. Holds your interest and is hard to put down. Some other books by the author include
“No Rest for the Dead) (2011), “Lost Lake” (2005), and “The Undertaker’s Widow” (1998). Give him a try, you might
be surprised.

From the LOS PRADOS DUST DEVILS CAR CLUB
We are looking for new members so if you own a classic vehicle, a brand new vehicle,
or anything in between here is your chance. We are a club for anyone interested in
driving, looking at, or talking about automobiles whether modern or vintage. The
membership is made up of people that live in Los Prados and outside of Los Prados.
We meet the last Monday of each month (except December, no meeting and any Monday that is a holiday) at the Los Prados club house in the Cypress Room at 6:00 p.m. This is a social
meeting with dinner being optional and did I mention that there are no dues to join.
When temperatures start to decline, keep safety on your mind.
That is it for this month. Once again, come and join us at 6:00 pm in the Cypress Room at the Los Prados
club house. The date for this month is Monday, Januray 25th. By the way did I mention that there are no
dues and watch the column next month for a report on the LVMS LAPS FOR CHARITY benefiting
Speedway Children’s Charity. See who’s baby can make three laps around the 1.5 mile oval and keep up
with the pace car or who hits pit row early. Myself, I hit pit row right off with an overheating problem but
