TM TAKE ONE March 2010 Year 14, #159 animal adoption, rescue and education in athens and surrounding communities on the cover…. TM Critter Magazine TM is an animal adoption publication dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals by promoting awareness, and by showcasing homeless animals who are in need of loving homes. Although the majority of animals profiled are dogs and cats, we will feature any animal in need of adoption. We publish the first Thursday of each month and distribute in Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Madison, Jackson, Elbert and Barrow Counties. Advertising and editorial deadline is the last Thursday of the month. We welcome any comments and suggestions, as well as informative articles and stories which are relevant to our goals.Subscriptions are available for $24 per year. Critter TM cannot screen either potential adopters or animals. We urge all parties to be responsible in these matters. Although any carrier oil can be used, olive oil is one of the most medicinal choices. heat and light. Stored correctly, oils can last for years, though most herbalists prefer to make them annually for maximum freshness. Note that these oils are for external use only. Discard any oil that becomes rancid. Fresh chopped garlic and fresh or dried mullein blossoms are traditional ingredients in ear oils for dogs, cats and humans, especially children. Use either or any combination of both. Cover the plant material with olive oil and heat it gently in the top of a double boiler above simmering water or in a closed glass jar set on a rack in a pan of simmering water for one to two hours or longer. If using dry herbs, additional oil may be needed as the plant matter absorbs it. Use enough oil to cover the herbs well but not so much that your result is weak and ineffective. Start with 2 cups oil to 1 cup dried herbs and adjust the proportions as desired. Fresh herbs, which should be allowed to wilt before using, will absorb less liquid, so simply cover them with oil. To turn an herbal oil into an herbal salve, just add beeswax. One of the best all-purpose salves you can make begins with the favorite infused oil above (St. John's wort, Calendula blossoms and Comfrey leaf). This basic salve recipe includes 1 cup of the infused oil, 1/2 teaspoon tea tree oil, 1/4 teaspoon, grapefruit seed extract, 10 drops lavender essential oil and 1 ounce beeswax. Combine ingredients in a double boiler or over very low heat until the beeswax has melted. Test the salve by placing a spoonful in the refrigerator. As soon as it hardens, check to be sure the salve is soft but not runny. If it's too soft, add more beeswax; if too hard, add more oil. Pour into clean baby food jars or other appropriate containers. To make a solar infusion, let fresh plant material wilt slightly to reduce its water content, then loosely pack a clean glass jar with fresh herbs (or fill a jar half way with loosely packed dried herbs), then fill it to the top with oil, clean the top of the jar so that no oil or plant material interferes with a tight seal, put the lid on tight and leave the jar in the hot sun for several weeks or months. A favorite oil for salvemaking is a blend of fresh St. John's wort blossoms, calendula blossoms and chopped, wilted comfrey that stays outdoors from July through October. The unusually potent healing properties of this oil, which the St. John's wort colors a deep red, are probably due to its prolonged photosynthesis. This antiseptic, analgesic, soothing salve speeds the healing of cuts, burns and other wounds. Cats tend to dislike the fragrance of tea tree and lavender, and many dogs are attracted to the olive oil in the salve and lick it off as fast as you put it on, which may present a logistical problem! This mixture is not harmful if swallowed in small amounts (but do keep the animals and children away when you have the separated ingredients in the cooking process); in fact, this type of salve can be used on the sore nipples of a nursing mother without harming her puppies or kittens. Even if the salve stays in place for only a short time, it will speed the healing of most skin conditions. Another way to infuse herbs in oil is to use the oven. Pour olive oil over fresh or dried herbs in a stainless steel pan, cover with foil and bake at low heat (200 degrees to 250 degrees) for two or more hours. Check the pan from time to time to prevent scorching or burning. The oil is "done" when it takes on the color and fragrance of the herbs. Electric turkey roasters, slow cookers (crock pots) and other heat sources also work well. (This column is authored by Carol Koenigsknecht, Herbal Practitioner and Owner of Terra Ken Herbals. She is available for health consultations for both people and pets, and for lectures, classes and workshops. She can be reached via her website at www.TerraKenHerbals.net or by phone, (706) 7970091. She also owns and operates Carol's Critter Care, a pet sitting service.) When ready to use, strain the oil through cheesecloth and add a few drops of tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract as a disinfecting preservative. Pour into a clean glass jar, label with ingredients and date of preparation and store away from PAGE 4 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2010 DISCLAIMER: This information is intended for educational purposes only. We do pediatric sterilizations on puppies and kittens as young as eight weeks of age. Call Today to schedule your appointment- (706) 795-2868. Box 787 • Locust Grove, GA 30248 (770) 464-0138 As sad as it is to imagine, there are many horses in Georgia needing loving homes just as there are cats, dogs, and other “pets”. The problem stems from “over breeding” and a lack of understanding of the requirements for care of these wonderful animals. Thanks to Georgia laws that protect horses, mules, and donkeys from starvation and other forms of abuse, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has the authority to impound equine that are in a critical situation in accordance with the Georgia Humane Care for Equine Act. Impounded animals are rehabilitated and many are sold at public auction to new owners which, hopefully, give them a second chance at a comfortable and useful life. Auctions are held at frequent intervals as horses become available. The Georgia Department of Agriculture provides information about each animal and the auction location on their website at www.agr.georgia.gov. New owners are requested to enter into an agreement that the equine may be monitored for one to two years after the sale. The Georgia Equine Rescue League, Inc. offers horses for adoption. These are horses which are donated to GERL for a variety of reasons by people who find that they are no longer able to care for them. There is a small “adoption fee” for these horses and they are monitored by GERL for a period of time until it is determined that the horse and the new owner are a good match. A current listing of available horses through Georgia Equine Rescue League may be found in their monthly newsletter or on their web site at www.gerlltd.org. She worked very hard and took a lot of heat from the “Cat haters’ but Trap Neuter Return was approved by the county commissioners. Only one commissioner voted against T.N.R. The colonies will have to be registered, and organized groups are now legally qualified to trap. Our thanks also go to all the commissioners and their staff, who took the time to look into the feral cat problem and did a lot of research with other states and counties to see how their programs were working. Speaking of “Cat haters”, these people were trapping stray and feral cats and taking them to the humane society and having them euthanized saying they were the owners. The Humane Society as you know got out of the feral cat business, thanks to these people. Not one of these cat haters stated “where and how” many birds were killed by feral cats. nations to be used for other type of vet visits and the medicine. We still have a lot of work ahead of us now that the TNR program is finally approved here in Athens. We thank those that have contributed cat food and money to our Victims of Human Beings. We need to also work on an educational program to get the word out about spay and neuter. To make a tax deductible donation of monetary value and / or a food donations or if you would be interested in adopting a cat or kitten call us. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to: DRAR c/o Pet Supply Plus, 191 Alps Rd Athens Ga, Phone 706-353-0650 or call us at 706-5460433. In six and half years, Bill can testify that he has never seen a deal bird or any other animal other than a dead rat. Feral cats are rodent hunters. One person, who took in 32 feral cats on her farm, will tell you that her rodent problem ceased with the feral cats and has not seen any dead birds. All of us dealing with the cats love the wildlife. You don’t do away with one species for the benefit of another! Bill found a beautiful white female cat in a sewer entrance at a feeding station. It appeared dead, but it was pretty sick. She had a lot of blood on her back; we thought she may have been hit by a car. We took her to the vet and they examined her and said it was caused by an infestation of fleas. Her ears were loaded with ear mites. All tests were given and she tested okay, nothing broken. She has since been given flea medicine along with an antibiotic, so she should be okay in a week or so. She is resting and eating like a little horse. If anyone is missing a white cat, please let us know. No question, this cat was dumped at this location. Who ever has been leaving bags of dry food for us at Pet Supply Plus for our feral cats, “Thank you” so very much. This helps us a lot. We still need farms, ranches or people with outdoor buildings to take our cats. They are “fixed” and given their shots. They make great cats at these locations and all we ask is to feed them and give fresh water daily. They do great in pairs. Donations are still welcome as we have 3 cats on medicine and kitten season is upon us. Already we see one kitten and a mommy. We still need monetary do- PAGE 30 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2010 Bill Koehlke with a sign promoting Spay And Neuter for all your animals.
