TAKE ONE - Critter Magazine
TM TAKE ONE August 2009 Year 13, #152 animal adoption, rescue and education in athens and surrounding communities on the cover…. TM Critter Magazine TM is an animal adoption publication dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals by promoting awareness, and by showcasing homeless animals who are in need of loving homes. Although the majority of animals profiled are dogs and cats, we will feature any animal in need of adoption. We publish the first Thursday of each month and distribute in Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Madison, Jackson, Elbert and Barrow Counties. Advertising and editorial deadline is the last Thursday of the month. We welcome any comments and suggestions, as well as informative articles and stories which are relevant to our goals.Subscriptions are available for $24 per year. Critter TM cannot screen either potential adopters or animals. We urge all parties to be responsible in these matters. As Peter Loose's official Grace's Birthday Party portrait depicts on the cover, the "Hawaiian" dogs from around the area say Mahalo! "Blessing and thanks" to you for supporting Grace's Birthday Party the past 9 years. The 10th annual Hawaiian themed celebration will be held again on the beautiful grounds of Ashford Manor Bed & Breakfast in Watkinsville, Ga. on September 20, from 2-5pm. Grace’s Birthday Party is a community-wide party for dogs and their pet parGrace Shearon 1986 - 1999 ents which benefits the G.R.A.C.E Fund at the University of Georgia Veterinary College. This fund provides monetary assistance for those whose pets need care and cannot afford it. We also give grants to other animal rescue organizations and the Athens Council on Aging. Jim Shearon, the founder of the G.R.A.C.E. Fund died unexpectedly on Oct. 1, 2008. Even though our hearts are heavy, we're working hard to make this the best ever in his memory. Jim wanted the party to continue this year and so it will, in style. At the event, dogs can play games such as musical sit, become a Picasso at the "High Museum of Aarf" enjoy a nice massage and get their nails painted at the Spa Center, or have portraits made at our Jim Shearon photo salon. We will also have a "Canine Idol" talent show, "Dress for Success" costume contest, and Best "Pucker up" competition. And for the human companions; hamburgers and hotdogs are free with admission, along with live musical entertainment provided by Nimbleslick Entertainment and some "treats" in the goody bags the first 250 dogs will have to share. Stop by our free "Ask the Vet" booth with any questions or concerns you may have about your dog. Not only are there tons of fun events to participate in, but we also put together quite a large silent auction with items from very generous local businesses. Come see what businesses such as Rage Hair Studio, The Hub Bicycle Shop, Edible Arrangements Chappelle Gallery, Puppies and More and Pawtropolis have donated. There will also be items such as dog beds, jewelry, and a stay in a suite at the new Athens Hotel Indigo. We even have official UGA team Nike practice jerseys and shoes donated! You can't buy these anywhere but at this auction. Come see what kind of deals you can get! We will have adorable dogs available for adoption from a few different rescue groups such as Circle of Friends Animal Society, Oconee Animal Control, and Companion Animal Rescue. So if you or someone you know is looking for a new companion to share the day with, please come by! Tickets will be sold at the gate only, VISA and Mastercard will be accepted. This year, we're having our own "stimulus" plan for participants. Entrance will be lowered to $5.00, dogs free. In an effort to encourage helping the community, we will be accepting donations of dog food at the gate to distribute to the rescue groups present. With the lower gate admission, please pick up a bag of food to bring and help our less fortunate furry friends. We would like to thank our sponsors as of press time: Pawtropolis, Pet Supplies Plus, Puppies & More, Hotel Indigo, Nimbleslick Entertainment, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Melia Pets and Merial. If you would like to know more about sponsorship opportunities or volunteering for the event, please email [email protected] or visit our website, gracesbirthday.com. Mahalo Howl! Returning Soon! Dr. Paula Loniak is preparing to get rolling again in a new, improved version of “Vet-To-Pet!” Available veterinary services will still include well-pet vaccinations, exams, and treatments for a wide variety of common eye, ear, skin, and wounds, as well as spays & neuters. In addition, a mobile clinic will be outfitted to allow minor procedures requiring anesthesia to be performed without transporting your pet to a different facility. Another new service will be hospice care for pets who are recovering at home from major surgeries or illnesses — Dr. Loniak will help provide the care recommended by your vet so you can be sure everything is going well, but you pet can be at home with you. Hospice care will also be available for pets who have terminal illnesses but still have some “quality of life” to enjoy. Home euthanasias with dignity and compassion are available with or without hospice care, “when the time comes.” The expected date for Vet-To-Pet to kick off is still not definite, but it’s hoped that Dr. Loniak will be ready for appointments (including some weekend and early evening hours) in early August. Watch next month’s “Critter” magazine as well as announcements on WUGA-FM public radio station in Athens for updates. We understand that the expense of having this done is often a factor so we offer drastically reduced prices on all sterilizations. We do pediatric sterilizations on puppies and kittens as young as eight weeks of age. Call Today to schedule your appointment- (706) 795-2868. He found it in the seeds and connecting tissue of grapefruit. Holistic physicians and veterinarians experimenting with grapefruit seed extract, which is safe for internal use, have found it effective in treating staphylococcus, streptococcus, salmonella, amoeba histolytica and other parasites, viruses, Candida albicans, herpes, sore throats, ear infections, gum disease, fungus infections, traveler's diarrhea and drug-resistant bacteria. According to Allan Sachs, a nutritionist and chiropractor, "Many prestigious universities and independent laboratories have tested grapefruit seed extract against more than 30 fungi, 20 bacteria and a host of viruses and protozoa. In almost all of these cultures grapefruit seed extract exhibited significant antimicrobial activity at low concentration." Unlike tea tree oil, with which it shares many properties, grapefruit seed extract can be taken internally in therapeutic quantities with no adverse side effects. This liquid extract has a bitter, unpleasant taste, but manufacturers offer a debittered powder in capsules. Both are convenient for hikers and campers who travel with their dogs. Nearly every lake in North America carries Giardia lamblia, a microscopic parasite that causes intestinal disease, and unfamiliar bacteria can cause traveler's diarrhea in dogs as well as people. Because grapefruit seed extract is still relatively new on the holistic health scene, it doesn't enjoy the decades of medical research and journal reports that document the growth of the tea tree oil industry. Holistic veterinarians are just beginning to use grapefruit seed extract as a natural antibiotic, immune system booster, candida treatment and parasite preventive. Some theorize that its antimicrobial activity enhances the action of herbs such as goldenseal and echinacea, which can be used to prevent or cure respiratory diseases, viral infections and other contagious illnesses. For example, blends of grapefruit seed and echinacea clear Chlamydia infections in cockatiels and other birds, mastitis and uterine infections in dogs and farm animals, infections in infant puppies and kittens and a host of other conditions. The extract has been used in combination with astragalus, barberry, white oak bark, witch hazel, calendula, slippery elm bark, pau d'arco bark, artemesia, milk thistle seed, dandelion, plantain and other herbs to augment their healing activity. Grapefruit seed extract is also called grapefruit extract or citrus seed extract. It is often confused with grapeseed oil or extract; however, that is an entirely different product and plant. Liquid grapefruit seed extract is every con- PAGE 22 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • JULY 2009 centrated even in the dilute formulas sold for home use and should be used carefully. It can be diluted with an equal amount of water or herbal tea and applied to ringworm, pustules or abscesses; be careful to avoid the eyes and mucous membranes when applying this concentration. Dilute in 5 to 6 parts water or tea and spray on or apply directly to hot spots, burns, infected cuts, sores, puncture wounds, rashes or infected ears. A few drops added to liquid soap or shampoo helps control flaking. Any extracts that are 30% to 40% grapefruit seed extract can be diluted in 3 to 4 parts water to create a disinfecting spray of about 10% extract for use in kennels, training schools, veterinary clinics and grooming salons to prevent the spread of kennel cough, upper respiratory infections and other contagious diseases. A capsule of powdered, debittered extract can be opened and the powdered extract sprinkled on food or mixed with water. One capsule is equivalent to approximately 10 to 15 drops of liquid extract and can be used for the same purposes. Pet owners and veterinarians have reported that using 1 capsule (100 or 125mg) per 10 pounds of body weight up to a maximum of about 8 capsules per day for very large dogs has successfully treated or helped prevent conditions such as diarrhea and bacterial, fungal or viral infections. Many conditions clear up within a day or two but some require longer treatment. Because powerful infection fighters tend to be most effective in short-term rather than long-term use, I recommend therapeutic doses for several days to a few weeks; then substitute another natural healer, such as echinacea. Box 787 • Locust Grove, GA 30248 (770) 464-0138 As sad as it is to imagine, there are many horses in Georgia needing loving homes just as there are cats, dogs, and other “pets”. The problem stems from “over breeding” and a lack of understanding of the requirements for care of these wonderful animals. Thanks to Georgia laws that protect horses, mules, and donkeys from starvation and other forms of abuse, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has the authority to impound equine that are in a critical situation in accordance with the Georgia Humane Care for Equine Act. Impounded animals are rehabilitated and many are sold at public auction to new owners which, hopefully, give them a second chance at a comfortable and useful life. Auctions are held at frequent intervals as horses become available. The Georgia Department of Agriculture provides information about each animal and the auction location on their website at www.agr.georgia.gov. New owners are requested to enter into an agreement that the equine may be monitored for one to two years after the sale. The Georgia Equine Rescue League, Inc. offers horses for adoption. These are horses which are donated to GERL for a variety of reasons by people who find that they are no longer able to care for them. There is a small “adoption fee” for these horses and they are monitored by When We Get a Horse…. GERL for a period of time until it is determined that the horse and the new owner are a good match. A current listing of available horses through Georgia Equine Rescue League may be found in their monthly newsletter or on their web site at www.gerlltd.org. Barbara Bendzunas When we get a new puppy, the vet gives us a nice little booklet that gives us broad outlines of what we need to do. It includes nutrition outlines and shot schedules needed. education. Often when I stop, I am told the horse must have something wrong with him because the pasture is full of stuff. Either way, it is a horrid way to exist. When we get our first horse, this does not happen. There is no such booklet that I can find. If you have a horse vet, he or she will usually help you make decisions and recommend what shots and all you need. He may even give you names of farriers. If you call a farm vet who is used to working with farmers, and experienced livestock owners, you will get nothing except what you ask for. The library has several good books on owning your first horse. There are a lot of sites on line that are great. Go to www.about.com and type in “your first horse”. All the information is good, and you will find more information than you have time to read. All horses and all ponies, need certain things. They need to have their hooves attended to by someone who is knowledgeable. They need certain vaccinations each year, including rabies. It amazes me how few people even think about this. Since horses usually show symptoms of rabies that are not easily recognized, this is especially important to our families as well as the horse. The other consideration is food. A lot of people turn the horse out with cattle in a huge field. The horses get fat, which leads to deadly complications. Ponies are especially prone to this, since they can eat as much as a horse, but were usually developed as a breed to be able to live on sparse pasture. The other extreme is the horse standing dejectedly in a lot filled with weeds, which horses can not digest, slowly starving to death. I see them all too often as I drive through the countryside. Some are victims of willful neglect, some just of lack of PAGE 26 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • JULY 2009 For more information, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will help as much as I can. It’s the same old story where we want to capture the cats that are responsible for the birth of these kittens and can’ because of NO FUNDS, but he cats have no problems in producing while we have these money problems. When we get a couple of dollars ahead, it has to go for the kittens we captured because most of them have the upper respiratory and eye problems from the hell they had to go through from birth. We have to keep them isolated at home and medicate them until are are in good health and ready for adoption. Right now we have several kittens about to be taken over to Pet Supply Plus on Alps Road for adoption. Amy, our newest member is fostering some kittens which should be ready for adoption. She has a tortie and a beautiful white kitten. Give us a call. Now we get hit with a condo complex on the west side of town putting out a memo to all their tenants that if they feed the colony of cats on the property they will receive a notice and fines and finally eviction. Where does this management group think these cats are going to go if they stop feeding them? That area is their home and it’s the only place they know. They just don’t leave. These little creatures are not hurting anyone, except leaving a couple of paw prints on their car or sit on someone’s patio to take a sun bath. We feel sorry for these people that don’t like cats, their missing their chance on knowing and caring for a wonderful animal. They love people unconditional. There are about 12 cats and kittens, mostly kittens which need medication and will be take to our vet. In fact Bill took one to a vet and the beautiful orange kitcheck out ok except for upper respitory infection. Bill spent his own money for this little creature. “She is beautiful and will make someone a fine pet” said Bill. We also have the feral cats that need a nice backyard with a shed or barn to live out their little lives, they are social but don’t want anyone touching them, they are just afraid. They just need a caretaker to love them and feed them. Bill and Mike went to the condos mentioned and trapped some of the cats and kittens Sat and 2 adults this Sunday. These animals have to be moved. it is breaking our hearts as well as a couple of the tenants that had been feeding these cats, we have no choice but to relocate the rest of the cats which beats the “death sentence” they would receive from the condo management. If by a miracle, we can get the funds to get these beautiful victims of human beings spayed and neutered before the move to a new location would be great, and it’s possible Bill can blow up his Visa card once again as he is taking this detail pretty hard but said, “it beats the alternative for these felines.” Bill and Mike will keep going out there until we catch them all. Anyone wishing to help with a donation please call us. We need help. There are still several beautiful kittens that need to be trapped before they get too old; we’ve had to put this aside to work on the condo cats. “Working a full time job and working for cats on the weekends sure makes for an interesting life,” said Bill Anyone wanting to “skip” the kitten state and would like a beautiful indoor cat for their home, please call us, they have been fixed and had their rabies shots. We also need foster homes to place cats until we can find homes. If interested call us. Bill and Mike continue to feed nearly 90 felines daily and using over two bags of food every day. Bill pays for the food out of his pocket, he would appreciate any cat food donations, and they can be left at Pet Supply Plus, marking it for Bill or DRAR. There are two lovely ladies that leave dry food for us at the store and they know who they are, and we thank them very much. We also have dedicated cat lovers who send us money every month. We can’t thank them enough. Mike has been building little sheds to put the food under to keep it dry if it rains. That has really helped. Bill is getting ready to worm the feral cats, it doesn’t get every type worm, but it helps keep them a little healthier. We thank all you cat lovers for taking care of the cats that have come to you for food. We have come in contact daily with people saying they are feeding strays that have found their home. We know the economy is tough right now, but any donation would help us out a lot, even just a small bag of food, every bit help. We need it for the cats and we all thank you.
