May 2016 - Vol. 16 - Issue 5
Elmhurst residents jetted off to Paris for an
elegant evening of fine dining, good wine,
and music. Our April in Paris evening also
included a trip to a museum to enjoy great
French paintings. Bonne soiree!

Our St. Michael Parish
School friend, Jonas, delighted us with a visit with
his six German Shepherd
puppies. They arrived in
style inside a huge duffle
bag. Needless to say, our
canine-loving residents
thoroughly enjoyed the
visit. Thanks, Schmidts!

Executive Director
What a busy spring this
has been for all of us.
We’re looking forward
to positive results from
our participation in the
Amazing Raise May 3. I
want to say thank you
to everyone who donates on our behalf.
Another thank you I
want to offer is to my
staff who held down the
fort while I recuperated
after undergoing a partial knee replacement. It
was a much-needed surgery and I feel wonderful as I get back into the
swing of things while
having therapy. Thank
you for allowing me to
relax knowing our residents are in good hands!

Take a Walk…
Walking is the first
step in keeping your joints
healthy, according to the senior director of Rehabilitation
& Sports Therapy at the
Cleveland Clinic, Gary Calabrese, in an article in the Arthritis Advisor.
Also, thanks to all of
the residents for their
good wishes and welcoming salutations.
In other business, we
are looking forward to
the final stage of our
Bloch mansion porch
restoration - 15 columns, capitals, and bases. We have applied for
a state grant and hope
for approval soon.
Elmhurst is a gem and
we want to ensure it always will be for the next
126 years. Have a wonderful summer. Jamie
Bethany Honors Jamie Crow
Executive Director Jamie Crow,
center, received the 2016 Field
Instructor of the Year award at
Bethany College for her
“outstanding support of Alan
Harper through his placement”
at Elmhurst as a student majoring in social work. Also shown
are Melanee Sinclair, right, andKathy Shelek-Furbee, of Bethany.
He recommends starting out
by walking every other day,
building up to 30 minutes on
the walking days. Once
you’ve mastered 30 minutes,
begin walking every day
starting at 15 minutes —
speed isn’t important. To
warm up, walk in place or do
calf raises for five to seven
minutes. Step it Up!
