The Collection
Elmhurst Historical Museum presented a wide range of
public programs throughout 2010. The Summer Fun &
Games programs drew a large family audience for magicthemed crafts with an average of 182 participants each
week, and Tea Time Talks for adults on third Thursdays
continued to be a popular option for adults.
The Museum’s Collection continues to grow with the
addition of 219 items to its collection from 36 donors in
2010 including:
• Glos Family artifacts The following items relating to
• Records from the Elmhurst Evening Woman’s Club
members of the Glos family were accessioned in 2010:
a dress (circa 1911) from the bridal trousseau of Clara
Glos; a small bible (circa 1865) which belonged to
Henry L. Glos; and a personalized glass from the 1893
World’s Columbian Exposition.
Records (1926 – 2003) give insight into an influential

woman’s organization in Elmhurst.
• Marjorie Wilder Letters A collection of letters
(1897 – 1899) written by Annie Gage Tucker Wilder
to her daughter, Marjorie, add valuable information
about the Wilder and Emery families in Elmhurst.
Research
The Museum served 609 researchers (in person or by
e-mail and phone) from 25 states and five countries
outside the United States (Australia, Canada, Germany,
Northern Ireland and Switzerland). The most popular
topic of interest was house history (78 inquiries),
and research questions received via e-mail increased
by 86 percent.

Your information will make a difference:
now they know about his life.”

Exhibits
Elmhurst Historical Museum proudly brought a diverse array of exhibits to the community in 2010 to fulfill its mission
to collect, preserve, interpret and share the stories that are the history of Elmhurst. Whether the subject matter is local
or international in scope, the goal is the same: to educate the public and foster an interest in history.
Dwellings: A Study in Residential Architecture
The Magical History Tour
October 13, 2009 – May 23, 2010
June 15, 2010 – January 2, 2011
This case study of the character and diversity of suburban
architecture as exemplified in the neighborhoods of
Elmhurst highlighted work by Walter Burley Griffin and
Frank Lloyd Wright, and included a self-guided architectural
tour of central Elmhurst.
The history of magic and Chicago’s ties to this mysterious
art were presented in a family-friendly exhibit featuring
fascinating artifacts from local collectors. Magicians such
as Jay Marshall, Marshall Brodien, and former Elmhurst
resident, Dr. Harlan Tarbell, were highlighted.

This exhibit was developed by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico
with the Carimar Design and Research Studio, and organized by
the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service.
The exhibition was made possible by the generous support of
the Smithsonian Latino Center.
The story of the baseball legend, cultural
hero, and international humanitarian
brought visitors from throughout the
Chicago area to see this national traveling
exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution
which was supplemented with Clemente
memorabilia.
Century City
October 12, 2010 – February 27, 2011
In honor of the City of Elmhurst’s 100th year of incorporation, Century City illuminated how and why Elmhurst
chose the progressive path of changing from a village to
a city form of government, and how that decision still
impacts the quality of life today.

The Drawn-Out History of
Comic Books (off-site)
Summer 2010
Of special note is the off-site
exhibition—a first for the
Elmhurst Historical Museum—
of the 2009 exhibit, The Drawn-Out History of Comic Books,
which was loaned to the Gail Borden Public Library in
Elgin to support its summer reading program. The library
reported a 26 percent increase in program participation
and more than 226,000 visitors throughout the summer.

Churchville Schoolhouse
In September of 2010, a new era in local history was
celebrated at the grand reopening of the historic Churchville
Schoolhouse. This National Register of Historic Places
property was reopened for public use and will provide
a unique living history experience for young school
children in the Chicago area. The grand reopening event
on September 26 drew more than 400 guests to the old
schoolhouse and featured a lively musical presentation
of song and dance by the children of Conrad Fischer
Elementary School.
The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation continues its work to
stimulate community-wide support for local history and the
Elmhurst Historical Museum through advocacy, education,
and fundraising. In 2010, the Foundation focused on
community outreach and provided essential financial
support for the Museum and Churchville Schoolhouse.
Initiatives included:
• Development of a new membership program;
• Launch of a new web site—
elmhurstheritagefoundation.org
• A commitment of $79,000 to provide critical financial
support for the Museum and Churchville Schoolhouse;
• Organization of the Vintage Base Ball Game;
• Hospitality for exhibit receptions and events;
• Grand reopening event at the Churchville Schoolhouse;
• The annual Ruth Strand Poster Contest;
• Implementation of a year-end donor campaign
