Kölner erde ist aber nicht nur geschichtsträchtig, sondern auch
fruchtbar! Welche neuen impulse in der Wissenschaftslandschaft
gesät werden, erfahren Sie im interview mit Prof. dr. Schömig
(S. 36). im Kontext Wirtschaft widmen wir uns übrigens auch dem
Planeten erde und lassen uns von dr. Fröhlich erklären, warum Köln

früher Unmengen erde und Steine durch die landschaft transportiert wurden, gibt es jetzt einen asphaltierten „Speedway“ zum Radfahren, inlineskaten oder Spazierengehen.

Cologne ground is both rich in history and rich in fertility! Read the in
terview with Prof. Dr. Schömig (page 36) and find out exactly what is

graphic changes that will impact Germany in coming years. With both
feet firmly on solid ground, Prof. Dr. Bucher tells us about the 2nd green
revolution. And on page 62 we provide you with a downtoearth over
view of Cologne culture and lifestyle. Exactly 850 years ago the bones
of the Three Wise Men came to Cologne from Milan – something that is
being recognized with celebrations and exhibitions!
Culture gives you an appetite? Cologne’s traditional dish – Himmel & Äd–
is best enjoyed in a brewery. After which it’s best to hit the town! At the
FLORA, a newly restored event venue at the Botanical Gardens, you are
welcomed in by the scent of earth and freshly cut grass. But if you want to
get even closer to mother nature, we recommend visiting :terra nova. On
ground over which once trundled truck loads of earth and stone, is now
a tarmac ‘speedway’ for cyclists, inline skaters or walkers.
As you see, sometimes it is worth getting to the root of things. The CCB

3 Questions for Prof.
dr. Bucher
drei Fragen an Prof. dr. Marcel
Bucher. cePlAS – cluster of excellence on Plant Sciences.
ccB: Herr Prof. Bucher, Sie versuchen Pflanzen zu verstehen. Warum?
Bucher: Wir müssen Pflanzen verstehen,
wenn wir wissen wollen, wie wir sie schützen und nutzen wollen. Wir brauchen neue
Züchtungsmethoden, neue Pflanzen, die
mehr ertrag liefern, dabei aber Ressourcen
schonen. das ist eine riesige Herausforderung, die der grünen Revolution, die in den
50er und 60er Jahren stattgefunden hat, absolut gleichkommt.
ccB: Sie benutzen auch den Begriff der
zweiten grünen Revolution. Was ist damit
gemeint?
Bucher: gemeint ist damit, dass wir wegen
des großen Bevölkerungswachstums die
landwirtschaftliche Produktion von heute bis 2050 verdoppeln müssen. die erste
grüne Revolution hat auf der klassischen
Züchtung basiert. Heute müssen wir neue
verfahren entwickeln. Wir untersuchen
komplexe eigenschaften von Pflanzen und
versuchen diese zu verstehen, auch unter
Zuhilfenahme neuer technologien. diese
eigenschaften zerteilen wir in ihre Module
und testen dann an Modellpflanzen, ob wir
die eine eigenschaft der einen Pflanze in die
andere Pflanze übertragen können.
ccB: Köln gilt als international renommiertes Zentrum für molekulare Pflanzenwissenschaften. Warum?
Bucher: Köln hat schon einen tollen Ruf! Als
ich von Zürich nach Köln kam, da wurde mir
geraten, geh da hin, da findet spannende
Pflanzenforschung statt. das war damals
schon begründet durch die räumliche und
thematische nähe der „grünen“ Forschung
an der Universität zu Köln zur Forschung am
Max-Planck-institut für Pflanzenzüchtungsforschung. der Bereich der molekularen
lebenswissenschaften ist in Köln sehr gut
aufgestellt und hat im Bereich der exzellenzinitiative gleich doppelt gepunktet. Man
kann sagen, dass wir hier die Biologen der
nächsten generation ausbilden. Wir haben
jetzt eine große Zahl an molekularbiologisch und biotechnologisch, bioinformatisch und theoretisch arbeitenden Forschergruppen, die einfach den Standort Köln
ausmachen. das ist die Zukunft der Biologie. Und cePlAS mit seinen Forschungsstandorten in Jülich, düsseldorf und Köln ist
ganz vorne dabei!
CCB: Prof. Bucher, I understand you are trying
to understand plants. Why?
Bucher: We need to understand plants if we
want to know how to protect and use them.
We require new ways of breeding them and
new plants that provide better yields in order
to protect resources. This represents a huge
challenge, that matches that of the Green
Revolution of the sixties and seventies.
CCB: You use the term second Green Revolu
tion. What do you mean with it exactly?
Bucher: I mean that in face of huge popu
lation growth we need to double agricul
tural production by 2050. The first Green
Revolution was built on classical plant
breeding. Nowadays we need to develop
new techniques. We are researching the
complex characteristics of plants in an att
empt to understand them. To do this we
are using new technology. We split these
characteristics into modules and then test
plant models to see if we can implant the
characteristic into another plant.
CCB: Cologne is seen as an internationally
respected centre for molecular plant biology.
Why?
Bucher: Cologne has a great reputation!
Moving from Zurich to Cologne was recom
mended to me on the basis of the exciting
plant science that is being done here. Back then
the reasons for this were the proximity, both
physical and theoritical, to ‘green’ research at
the University of Cologne and the Max Planck
Institute for Plant Breeding Research. Cologne
is great for molecular life sciences and boasts
serious credibility through the Excellence Ini
tiative. You can say we are training the next
generation of biologists. We now have a large
number of molecular biology, biotechnology,
bioinformatics and theoretical research groups
that really set the Cologne campus apart. This
is the future of biology. And CEPLAS with its
research sites in Jülich, Düsseldorf and Cologne
is right up there!

2013 eröffnete mit dem :envihab eine hochtechnologische Studienanlage des dlR, in
der auch Astronauten für ihren Aufenthalt im
All vorbereitet und untersucht werden. in der
weltweit einzigartigen hochmodernen Forschungsanlage simulieren Wissenschaftler
unter anderem unter exakt kontrollierbaren
Umweltbedingungen langzeitmissionen ins
Weltall. Mit dem Kernstück der Anlage, einer
Kurzarmzentrifuge, können Probanden zum
Beispiel der sechsfachen erdanziehungskraft
ausgesetzt werden. die Wissenschaftler haben dabei aber nicht nur die Astronauten
im Blick, sondern auch die Menschen auf
der erde. Was den Astronauten oder Piloten
oder Fluglotsen leistungsfähig erhält, hilft
auch dem Patienten oder zum Beispiel dem
Schichtarbeiter am Boden, davon ist Prof.
dr. med. Rupert gerzer, deutsches Zentrum
für luft- und Raumfahrt (dlR), überzeugt.
im november 2014 wird in dem 3.500 m²
großen Forschungszentrum der Astronaut
Alexander gerst unmittelbar nach seiner
Rückkehr aus dem All durchgecheckt. der
37-jährige wird im Mai 2014 zur internationalen Raumstation iSS aufbrechen. viereinhalb Jahre training am europäischen Astronautenzentrum der eSA in Köln liegen dann
hinter gerst. gleich nach seiner landung im
november soll der deutsche Astronaut direkt
an den Rhein gebracht werden und nicht wie
bisher für Raumfahrer üblich nach Moskau
oder Houston. das ist eine Premiere in der

is certainly the opinion of Prof. Dr. med. Rupert
Gerzer of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
In November 2014 the 3,500 m² research centre

aus dem Ausland. die deutsche Krebsgesellschaft hat Sie in diesem Jahr als onkologisches Zentrum (cio) zertifiziert. vermutlich sind Sie schon mitten drin im nächsten
Projekt ...
Schömig: in einem Universitätsklinikum
gibt es natürlich ständig neue Projekte. Wir
sind ein großer organismus. Wir haben uns
der wissenschaftsnahen und menschlichen
Medizin verschrieben und da gibt es immer
etwas, was man verbessern kann. ein großes
Projekt ist die weitere bauliche neugestaltung des campus, des gesamten Klinikums
hin zu einem Klinikum der kurzen Wege für
den Patienten und hin zu einem Klinikum
der fachübergreifenden und Berufsgruppen
übergreifenden Zusammenarbeit.
ccB: die Uniklinik als Bauherr. 60 Millionen
verbauen Sie im Jahr. im Rahmen der Stadtgespräche sprechen Sie von den „weichen“
Faktoren in der Medizin, der Wohlfühlatmosphäre, die durch Architektur wesentlich
beeinflusst wird. Patienten sollen nicht eingeschüchtert werden, sondern vertrauen
entwickeln. Wie setzen Sie das baulich um?
Schömig: nachteil eines großen Klinikums
ist der, dass ein Patient sich da leicht verloren vorkommen kann. einfach die schiere
größe eines solchen Klinikums kann einschüchtern und das möchten wir vermeiden. da gibt es zwei große Ansatzpunkte,
das eine sind die Mitarbeiter: im Bereich
der onkologie haben wir beispielsweise
lotsen eingeführt, die den Patienten durch
die komplexe Behandlung und durch unser Klinikum führen. Auf der anderen Seite
schafft auch Baulichkeit vertrauen. das
heißt, wenn wir offen und freundlich bauen,
dann hat es einerseits Rückwirkung auf die
Mitarbeiter, die sich dann wohler fühlen,
aber andererseits auch Auswirkungen auf
die Patienten, die sehen, dass wir uns den
Menschen öffnen.
ccB: ihr Büro liegt mitten auf dem campus.
das gebäude 65 ist grün. grün wie die Hoffnung, meinte heute eine ihrer Mitarbeite-
rinnen. Was erhoffen Sie sich von Köln als
Kongress-Standort?
Schömig: die Möglichkeiten Kongresse in
Köln von unterschiedlicher größe zu veranstalten, sind sehr gut. natürlich befindet
sich Köln dabei permanent im Wettbewerb
mit anderen Metropolen. themen wie Spitzentechnologie oder auch Spitzensport
dürften ruhig enger ins Bewusstsein rücken.
generell sind wir aber sehr zufrieden.
ccB: Auch Köln kann sehr zufrieden sein,
die Uniklinik hier zu haben. Schließlich spielt
die Uniklinik nicht nur in der Forschung eine

Schömig: Wenn ich frei habe, fahre ich
samstags gerne in die Kölner innenstadt.
die ist bunt, vital, lebendig, jung! ich bin
über Würzburg und Heidelberg nach Köln
gekommen. es gibt keine Stadt für mich,
die eine solche vitalität ausstrahlt wie Köln.
Und das ist auf dem Wochenmarkt genauso. ein buntes und lebendiges Umfeld!

schömig, medical Director of Cologne university Hospital talks to us about new projects, architecture and how, coming from
wurzburg, he sees Cologne.
CCB: Prof. Schömig you don’t seem to have to
worry about your hospital’s reputation: Cologne
University Hospital is a magnet for awards and
prizes. Patients come to you from the surroun
ding area as well as abroad. And this year the
German Cancer Association certified you as a
Centre for Oncology (CIO). You are probably
also working on your next project.
CCB: The University Hospital spends some 60
million a year on building work. In a recent
interview you talked about ‘soft’ side of medi
cine, the sense of wellbeing that architecture
can help create. You are out to create trust
rather than intimidate patients. How do you
go about doing that?
Schömig: The disadvantage of such a big hos
pital is that it is easy for patients to feel lost.
The size of a large hospital alone can be inti
midating and we want to avoid that. There
are two elements to this. The first is our staff.
For instance, in the Oncology Department we
have introduced guides to help patients find
their way around treatment and the buildings.
The second is buildings that create a sense of
trust. By creating warm and friendly buildings
our staff feel better which, in turn, leads our
patients to respond positively to the openness
and warmth they are met with.
CCB: Your office is in the middle of the campus.
Building 65 is green. One of the hospital staff
told me green is the colour of hope. What do
you hope for Cologne as a conference location?
Schömig: Cologne is well equipped to put on
conferences of different sizes. But, of course,
Cologne is permanently competing with other
large cities. Things like cuttingedge technolo
gy and worldclass sport could receive a stron
ger focus, but generally we are very happy.
CCB: Likewise, Cologne can also be happy to
have the University Hospital in the city. Ulti
mately the hospital not only plays a leading
role in research but also for Cologne gene
rally ...
Schömig: You’re right, the University Hospi
tal is a real motor to economic development.
With a workforce of more than 9,500 we are
one of the region’s largest employers. What
is more, we treat over 250,000 patients eve
ry year! Our approach to the treatment of
cancer, for example, has been very successful
and we’re well known far beyond Cologne. We
were also one of the first university hospitals
to receive status as a Centre of Excellence, an
award we have now received for a second time
from the German Cancer Association. We are
very proud of that.
CCB: When do you stop to catch your breath?
You agreed to meet our photographer at a
street market, why?
Schömig: When I’ve got time off I like to go
into the city centre. It’s colourful, vibrant and
youthful! I came to Cologne after living in
Wurzburg and Heidelberg. For me no other
city radiates as much vitality as Cologne. The
street market is the same – it’s colourful and
vibrant!

ccB: Herr dr. Fröhlich, wenn man sich die
Website ihres instituts ansieht, die Presse
verfolgt, schon wenn man dieses imposante gebäude betritt, ist man mehr als beeindruckt: Man hat den eindruck, hier wird an
hundert Projekten gleichzeitig gearbeitet.

Fröhlich: Ja, das stimmt. Alle diese themen
interessieren uns! Und alle themen haben
eine überspannende Klammer und das
ist die Zukunftsfähigkeit des Wirtschaftsstandorts deutschland. Mit anderen Worten: Wir beschäftigen uns mit allen themen, die wichtig sind, damit es auch noch in
10 und 20 Jahren Wertschöpfung und gute
Arbeitsplätze hier in deutschland gibt. deshalb ist es wichtig, dass wir die politischen
und wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen
analysieren ...
ccB: Und das tun Sie mitten im traditionsreichen Kunibertsviertel in direkter nähe
zum dom. von ihrem Büro schauen Sie auf
den Rhein. Und vom Rhein schaut man auf
ihr institut. der renommierte Kölner Architekt thomas van den valentyn hat das gebäude entworfen: Für Kölner und touristen
ist die helle Fassade mit seiner geschwungenen Form ein echter Hingucker. Was hat
Köln denn noch vom institut für deutsche
Wirtschaft?
Fröhlich: Zunächst einmal, unser name ist
institut der deutschen Wirtschaft Köln,
das heißt wir tragen den namen der Stadt
im namen des instituts. das Bekenntnis zu
Köln ist für uns eine wichtige Aussage! Wir
tragen den namen Köln mit allem was wir
tun, nach draußen in die Republik oder –
wenn Sie so wollen – in die weite Welt hinaus. gerade heute stellen wir eine Studie
vor, in Brüssel, vor den Spitzen der europäischen Politik. Und Absender ist das iW
Köln.
ccB: Sie tragen Köln in die Welt hinaus. das
tut Köln bestimmt gut. Wann tut Köln ihnen
gut?
Fröhlich: Wir sind hier gegründet worden.
Unsere Aufgabe ist es ja, unsere wissenschaftlichen erkenntnisse, Studien, Positionen in die öffentlichkeit zu kommunizieren.
Und Köln ist nun mal eine hervorragende
Medienstadt! Außerdem ist Köln verkehrsgünstig gelegen. Wir haben viele nationale
Partner, da ist die Rheinschiene für uns ganz
wichtig. die nähe zu Brüssel ist ein weiterer
Punkt. Für uns ist Köln wirklich ein hervorragender Standort!
ccB: ein Blick in die Zukunft – welche themen haben Sie auf der liste?
Fröhlich: Heute und sicherlich auf Jahre
hinaus ist es das thema energiewende.
deutschland ist ein industriestandort: Und
industrie braucht nun mal energie. Und die
energiekosten dürfen nicht unsere Wettbewerbsfähigkeit gefährden. Man muss aufpassen, dass investitionen in deutschland
nicht unattraktiv werden und die nächste
großinvestition dann nicht mehr am Rhein
sondern am Mississippi stattfindet. ein
zweiter Punkt, der uns beschäftigt, ist der
rasche demografische Wandel. Wir werden
älter und weniger. die große Herausforderung wird sein, wie wir in 10, 20 Jahren,
wenn die Babyboomer in Rente gehen, die
Arbeitsplätze nachbesetzen.
ccB: Kann man Köln als Stadt bezeichnen,
die der demografischen entwicklung gewachsen ist?
Fröhlich: Köln hat zumindest eine gute tradition darin. es gibt ja das schöne lied von
den Bläck Fööss „Unsere Stammbaum“,
das darauf verweist, dass jeder von uns seine Wurzeln irgendwo anders hat und wir
alle nach Köln „hingekumme“ sind. ich bin
kein Rheinländer aber dieses lied trifft es
eigentlich sehr schön. Köln war immer eine
offene Stadt, immer in Bewegung. ich bin
Saarländer, mich hat es hierher verschlagen,
ich fühle mich heute mit meiner Familie
sehr wohl hier. das Zweite ist: Köln ist eine
attraktive Stadt für junge leute, im Schnitt
kommen 10 Bewerber auf einen Studienplatz der Fachhochschule. das zeigt wie attraktiv Köln ist. Köln gehört zu den Städten,
die wachsen. Köln hat die Medien und in deren Umfeld gibt es ja hunderte kleine Partner, Produktionsbüros, Kreativwirtschaft,
was attraktiv ist. dann haben wir auch im
kulturellen Bereich eine große vielfalt, eine
theater- und Musikszene, die bundesweit
bekannt ist. Feiern. Relaxte Stimmung. das
verbindet man mit Köln. lebensart. Köln
ist lebenswert. den Unternehmen fällt es
sicherlich leicht Mitarbeiter nach Köln zu
locken. das kulturelle Angebot ist bunt, die
Philharmonie ein glanzlicht. da fällt es anderen Städten schon schwerer qualifizierten
nachwuchs anzuziehen.
ccB: Zum Schluss eine persönliche Frage:
Haben Sie einen lieblingsort hier im Kunibertsviertel. einen Platz, wo Sie Ruhe und
energie tanken können?
Fröhlich: St. Kunibert, nebenan. Zu dieser
Kirche empfinde ich schon lange eine große
innere verbundenheit.

CCB: Dr. Fröhlich, perusing your institute’s
website, following the media or just entering
this imposing building makes quite an impres
sion. One gets the feeling that you are working
on hundreds of projects simultaneously. Immi
gration within the EU, change in French eco
nomic policy and research projects that deal
with bigcity demographics, parttime work,
climate change, inflation, togo technology,
demographics and the euro crisis ... That’s a
lot of research topics, isn’t it?
Fröhlich: Yes, it is. But all of these topics inte
rest us! And all of them have a common thread
running through them – Germany’s future as
a business location. In other words, we’re
dealing with all those issues that are impor
tant to keeping productivity and good jobs in
Germany over the next 10 to 20 years time.
That’s why it is important for us to analyse
political and economic conditions ...
CCB: And you do that right here in the Kuni
berts Quarter, a part of town that is rich in tra
dition and is very close to the Cathedral. From
your office you look out over the Rhine. And
from the Rhine you look towards your institu
te. The renowned Cologne architect Thomas
van den Valentyn designed the building. For
tourists and residents alike the bright curving
facade is a real eyecatcher. What does the
Cologne Institute for Economic Research do
for the city of Cologne?
Fröhlich: First of all, we are called the Cologne
Institute of Economic Research – so the city is
right there in our name. Recognising Cologne
in that way represents an important state
ment for us!. And we carry the name Cologne
with us in everything we do in Germany and
beyond. In Brussels on this very day we are
presenting a study to leading politicians within
the European Union. And it is the Cologne Ins
titute for Economic Research that is behind it.
CCB: You take Cologne with you around
the world. That’s good for Cologne. When is
Cologne good for you?
Fröhlich: The Institute was established in
Cologne. Our objective is to carry out research
and communicate our findings to the pub
lic. And Cologne just happens to be an excel
lent media city! Plus Cologne is conveniently
located. We partner with other institutes
around the country and being located on the
Rhine important to us. Cologne’s proximity to
Brussels is another advantage. Cologne really
does prove to be an excellent location for us!
CCB: A look into the future – what kind of
topics do you have on your list?
Fröhlich: Today and no doubt for years to
come, the transition from tradition to renew
able sources of energy will remain a major
focus. Germany is an industrial country, and
industry requires energy. But the cost of ener
gy cannot be allowed to endanger Germany’s
ability to compete. We need to be careful that
investing in Germany does not become unat
tractive, attracting the next major investment
to the Mississippi and not the Rhine. Another
key issue we’re dealing with is the pace of de
mographic change. As a nation we are getting
older, plus we are becoming fewer. For now the
big challenge is how to fill jobs over the next 10
to 20 years as the baby boomer generation go
into retirement.
CCB: Is Cologne prepared for these demogra
phic changes?
Fröhlich: Traditionally Cologne always has
been. There’s a song by the Colognebased
band Bläck Fööss. It’s called “Family Tree” and
it makes it clear that all of us have our roots
somewhere else. I’m not originally from the
Rhine and this song makes the point exactly …
Cologne has always been very open and ac
commodating. I’m from the Saarland but
living here with my family I feel very much at
home. The second point is that Cologne is an
attractive city for young people. On average
there are 10 applicants for every place at the
University of Applied Sciences. That shows
how appealing Cologne is. Cologne belongs to
a group of cities that are growing. Cologne is a
media city and is full of smaller mediarelated
companies. And that makes it attractive. It
also boasts an enormous amount of cultural
variety and a theatre and music scene that is
well known throughout Germany. Partying
and a relaxed mood is what people associate
with Cologne. It’s the way of life here. Cologne
is a great city to live in. And companies don’t
have a problem attracting employees to the
city. Its cultural offerings are extremely varied,
with the Cologne Philharmonic providing a
highlight. Other cities find it harder to attract
well qualified graduates.
CCB: To wrap up, a personal question: Do you
have a favourite place here in the Kuniberts
Quarter? A place where you can recharge your
batteries and find peace?
Fröhlich: St. Kunibert’s church right next door.
I’ve felt a strong connection to the church for a
long time now.
