A Note from Greg
That is, if I had one; which I do not; not that there is anything wrong with a
seersucker suit. It is just that I learned during finishing school that fashion etiquette
dictates after Labor Day seersucker suits, linen, white apparel, and hats (for women)
are to be closeted until Easter. Most of you know that I am not exactly the poster boy
for high fashion (here is a surprise – I really did not go to finishing school. I am not even
sure what that is). Depending on the weather, I am happy in a t-shirt, blue jeans and
flip flops with a baseball cap hiding my retreating hairline. More formally, I am okay
sporting a navy blue suit, white dress shirt and a striped tie of medium width. It is okay
with me if you show up next Sunday in a seersucker suit, wearing a straw hat, with a
linen shirt and white shoes, but just don’t blame me if the ushers or the fashion police
stop you to ask a few questions.
Fashions, trends, styles come and go. In fact, most things change in our evolving
world and there is not much we can do about it but to either change with the times or
dig our heels in and say no. Even the church is not immune to change, and here I am not
simply referring to styles (although I have spotted a leisure suit or two in the last few
years).
There is one affirmation in the Bible that speaks of what does not change:
steadfast love. It is a beautiful idea, steadfast love. Steadfast love, at least on earth, is
not perfect.
…it is not complete
…it can even disappoint from time to time.
That is, because as good as we can be or think we can be, we all inevitably fall
short.
Steadfast love, however, is steadfast. It holds the course.
That is why when we read of it in the scriptures it is primarily applied to God
and not people. The history of God is a history of our falling short and disappointing the
Creator.

The denials and betrayals of the disciples
And yet what do we read of God?
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things
present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all
creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 8:38-39)
That is a steadfastness that will not let us go. May it be so with each of us with
all our relationships.
Christian Studies at FBC provides our congregation an opportunity to take
basic seminary type classes on subjects like: Theology, Christian History,
Biblical Studies, Ethics, and Liturgy. Join us Wednesday nights @6 PM.

Vision 2020 Committee invites you to participate in a focus
group! This focus group is designed to receive input from
members of our congregation in order to give better insight
to the Committee as it discerns our pathway forward. In order
to be effective and allow participants to share, group sizes
will be limited. The master sign-up list will be posted at the
main reception desk in the Daniel Building. The chair and vicechair of the Committee will be present at each focus group. If
response exceeds available focus groups, we will schedule more

Leadership Development with Tony Cartledge September 7,
4:30-6:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall - You are invited to join with
us to hear Tony Cartledge, a contributing editor with Baptists
Today. Whether you participate in children, youth, adult, or music
ministry leadership - either Sunday morning or at other times
during the week - you are invited to join us. Tony will spend the first
portion of our time together offering leadership principles that can
be applied to teaching Sunday School, facilitating small groups,
or leading any type of ministry group or activity. Following Tony’s
presentation we will divide into ministry area groups - children,
youth, and adult - to spend time addressing more specific area
needs as we move into this new church year. Child care is provided
by reservation. We will not be serving dinner as part of this event.

Do you know why people keep coming back to a church? Once
they are invited, people will keep coming
back when they feel a sense of belonging.
As a church, as “home folk”, it is our
responsibility to make our guests feel
welcome. We can do that by following
the 10-5-2. Be observant and notice those around you. Imagine a
ten foot circle either in worship or on campus. Spend more than
five seconds engaging our guests (and members you don’t know)
in conversation. Then, introduce them to two other people. As our
church’s best asset, YOU can help us be a welcoming, engaging
congregation by following the 10-5-2!

Senior Adult Ministry
Day trip to Covington/Emory at Oxford September 19! Tour
Covington’s antebellum and neoclassical houses, including Tara,
Scarlett O’Hara’s house in Gone With the Wind, and Whitehall,
Margaret Mitchell’s inspiration for Twelve Oaks. See the famed
courthouse and other sites used in The Heat of the Night tv series,
and visit Emory at Oxford Campus. Lunch at the Blue Willow.
Cost: $65 which includes tours, transportation and lunch.
Biltmore House/The Cove and Flat Rock, NC October 23-24! First
day, Biltmore Estate house/garden tour and Antler Hill Village.
Lunch on your own. Group dinner in Ashville. Second day visit
The Cove (Billy Graham’s Christian Conference Center in Ashville)
and tour the Chatlos Memorial Chapel and Visitor’s Center. We
will stop in Flat Rock for lunch at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse
and some local shopping before heading home. Cost: $250
which includes Biltmore tickets, dinner in Ashville, one night at
Biltmore Farms Hotel, Cove tour, lunch at Hubba Hubba, and
transportation.
