The Engines
Lawrence Peters is a singer, songwriter, drummer and
America’s preeminent electric washboard player, with a
musical career spanning 20+ years. He was a key player
in the Lawrence, Kansas music scene before moving to
Chicago in 1992. Since then, he has recorded or performed with dozens of bands, including The Lawrence
Peters Outfit, Magnolia Electric Company, Plastic
Crimewave Sound, Velcro Lewis Group, The Golden
Horse Ranch Band, Eiren Caffall, Mar Caribe, and Tijuana Hercules. Lawrence’s main musical passion is
deep-rooted American country music, but he also plays
acid punk, swamp rock, Shaker-modern, and Westernpirate-surf music, and somehow gets away with it. On
July 23rd, he invites the outlaw-country band Rivals of
the Peacemaker to perform, after which he spins records from his enormous collection of vintage country
45s, throwing down a mix of honky-tonk, bluegrass, outlaw, string band, countrypolitan, and rockabilly.

Ever wonder which artists inspired your favorite bands
to pick up their instruments for the first time? Curious
about what albums were influential in shaping their
sound? Join us for the Whistler's new monthly series,
Playing Favorites, where musicians pay homage to the
music that resonates most with them, be it a collection
of songs from one artist or band or an entire album. On
Sunday, July 29th, two local bands will hang up their
own songs and try on some others for a night. Darling
will play The Microphones landmark 2001 album "The
Glow, Pt. 2" and Panoramic & True will play the Belle &
Sebastian classic "The Boy With the Arab Strap"..
Odd Obsessions presents the 1978 Australian actionmusical "Stunt Rock". Australian stuntman Grant Page
moves to Los Angeles to be the Head Stunt Guy on a
TV Show called Undercover Girl. While there he lends
his expertise to rock band Sorcery, helping the band
develop pyrotechnic magic tricks for their shows. The
movie cuts between Page performing stunts, talking
about stunts, and Sorcery performing live on stage. It's
95 minutes of stunts... and rock!

Although they’ve been compared to certain lovesick
folksingers, Cains & Abels lack any of the helplessness
so often present in the classic folk-rock oeuvre. David
Sampson writes songs that are indeed heartbroken—for
lack of money, love, communication—but they’re also
hopeful and aware of their own strength. Sampson has
a powerful voice that glides over layered guitar riffs and
spare drum beats, much like a sermon or a plea. The
songs themselves present that opposition. They can be
quiet and introspective, while the next moment booming
and bursting with universal themes. Their new album, My
Life Is Easy, is out now on Whistler Records.

"Signs Point To Yes" is an installation
about future-forward positivity and
the joyous, black-lit, maybe a little sleazy,
probably kinda gay party
happening inside your Magic 8-Ball when
you're not looking."
Eiren Caffall’s music comes from her childhood in the
wooded hills of Western Massachusetts, where her bohemian parents took her to art galleries, hash parties
and Shaker Barns filled with drying herbs. Her father
conducted the Church of Jazz in their living room every Sunday morning and she spent a lot of time reading about maritime disasters. These influences have resulted in her unusual lyricism, strong songcraft, and the
faint shock of surprise as the shy quiet of her lap steel
guitar meets her longing voice. Underneath her narratives
of loss, there is always the pull of joy. Her songs are tiny
anthems for that moment when you think you might drown
and—failing to swim—you unexpectedly begin to fly.
