Backyard composting
Lyndsay Price
Waste Compliance
Inspector
Here in Yarmouth and Digby Counties we
have a very inclusive municipal composting
program.
All
of your organic
waste, including
food and nonrecyclable paper
(such as soiled
napkins, pizza
boxes,
paper
take-out food
bags), can go
into your green
cart and put out
curbside for collection.
However, backyard composting is also a
great way to divert waste. Please note that
most backyard composting systems are not
ideal for meat and bones, oils and fats, and
dairy products, so you will still need your
green cart for those types of food scraps.
There are different styles and methods for
backyard composting, but the general idea
is to put acceptable food scraps in a designated container outside and provide the
proper conditions to allow it to turn into
nutrient-rich compost for use in gardens
and flowerbeds.
First, you will need a compost bin. There
are bins for sale at stores but there are also
many variations and do-it-yourself designs
available online. Bins will need to allow for
some air exchange so the microorganisms
can get oxygen to break down the food
waste. Choose a partially shaded spot in
your yard for the bin that will allow for
good water drainage.
When adding food to your compost
bin, try to alternate layers of nitrogenrich greens (such as: rotting fruit, veggie
peelings, coffee grounds, tea leaves) and
carbon-rich browns (such as: dry leaves
and grass, non-toxic compostable paper
like newsprint or non-bleached paper napkins). Be sure to stir/mix up your compost
pile often to allow for more even decomposition.
Compost should be ready to use on gardens within a few months, depending on
the conditions. If you run into trouble with
yielding compost from
your backyard bin,
look for a “compost troubleshooting guide” online
or find information through our
website at http://

Spring is on its way
By Veralyn Rogers Bonnar
Winter has been harsh and cruel this year,
but spring is slowly advancing, causing it to
lose its icy grip. In early April, as I sit on the
west veranda of my Gavelton farmhouse, the
sun’s intensity is causing the snow
to slowly disappear, revealing
more patches of green in the
fields nearby.
The northwest wind is
invigorating, the sky a pale
blue. Bird song is everywhere.
The robin population is increasing daily and I am seeing many
new arrivals. The chickadees have
been singing their spring song for
some time now. The soulful notes
of the mourning doves forever re-
mind me of the background sound in the TV
Miniseries,w
At one point in this glorious day I looked
skyward to see two immature bald eagles soaring on the thermals—a symbol of freedom to
me. I couldn’t help but think that the ravages
of this winter must have been hard on them.
The heavy snow cover has been difficult for
birds of prey and animals alike. Even now it
is difficult for spring birds to find food and
nesting material.
In the garden I see the dainty
heads of the snowdrops have pushed
through the snow. Hopefully soon
the weather will warm up, the
tree swallows will arrive to find
plenty of insects, and spring will
carry on as it has for generations before.

Answer to last week’s puzzle
ARIES
You may hear about a job opening
at work that is much more in line
with your career goals. Some effort
and a little patience are needed to
secure it.
LEO
You’re ready to spoil yourself and do
something to make yourself happy.
You may spend some time in the
stores. You buy lots of things that lift
your spirits.
SAGITTARIUS
Don’t be afraid of change on a pro
fessional level, as new responsibi
lities can bring you good future pros
pects. Time is a scarce commodity
this week.
TAURUS
There are lots of negotiations going
on around you, and you dominate
the proceedings despite yourself.
You cause a sensation and are even
congratulated after a brilliant exploit.
VIRGO
There’s quite a bit of action over
the next few days and you stand
out for your skills and perseverance.
You make some changes to your
surroundings.
CAPRICORN
You’re inspired to go on a trip or
have some sort of adventure that
requires a lot of preparation. A train
ing course makes you see your
future in a different light.
GEMINI
You spend part of the week at home
because your family needs you.
Perhaps you’ll also need to get ready
for a move or for the sale and pur
chase of a property.
LIBRA
You may feel quite a bit of accumu
lated fatigue. A sleepless night this
week slows down some projects.
New eating habits would do you
some good.
AQUARIUS
You’re particularly sensitive and so it
would be good to spend some quality
time with friends and family in order
to soothe tensions. You’re going to be
entrusted with a few secrets.
CANCER
You have lots to say this week. You
don’t talk for the sake of talking, but
your comments have quite an impact
in the long term and they’ll even go
around the world via the Web.
SCORPIO
Short reckonings make long friends.
Avoid exchanging money with friends
at the moment. You overcome your
shyness by speaking in front of a
crowd.
PISCES
You give your full attention to your
loved one. You have to make a few
adjustments in your relationship. Lots
of problems can be settled by doing
some interesting activities together.

Five tips for attracting butterflies to your garden
Butterflies add color, movement and whimsy to any landscape and are therefore welcome
guests in most gardens. In the Midwest, some
of the more common varieties include monarchs, swallowtails, spring azures and fritillaries. Learn how to attract — and keep close —
these winged beauties by following these smart
tips.
1. Don’t forget the caterpillars. Maintain a
out
steady population of butterflies through
the summer and fall by ensuring that their offspring has enough to eat. Milkweed is the mo
narch caterpillar’s snack of choice, while black
swallowtail larvae love to feast on herbs such as
parsley and fennel.
2. Keep your garden insecticide-free. To
avoid killing the insects that you are trying to
attract, use gentler alternatives to insecticides
to keep nuisances at bay. Ladybugs are a great
choice, as they are harmless to plants but get
rid of aphids.
3. Favor bright colors. Butterflies are es
pecially attracted to yellow, pink and orange
flowers, so plan your color scheme accordingly.
Flowers with short, tubular heads or flattened
heads are your best bet.
4. Plant native perennials. Zinnias produce sweet nectar that butterflies love,
all summer long; they are also native
to the Midwest. Purple cornflowers are another
good choice, and they keep blooming well into
the fall.
5. Set up some drinking and resting
spaces. Use flat rocks to give your butterflies a spot to spread their wings and take
in some sun. You could also place a shallow water dish with a layer of sand at the
bottom so your new guests can quench their
thirst.

At the Drop of a Hat
by Jenn McKinlay
Cousins Scarlett Parker and Vivian Tremont’s fashionable London hat shop, Mim’s
Whims, is visited by a new customer
bearing an old hat box. Ariana Jackson
is getting married and wants to restore
her mother’s bridal hat and veil for the
occasion. The elegant item was made by
Scarlett and Vivian’s grandmother over 30 years ago, so
Viv is delighted to take the job. When Scarlett goes to Ariana’s
office to consult about the restoration cost, she finds her outside, standing over her boss’s dead body. Though Ariana claims
to know nothing about his demise, the investigation unveils a
motive for murder. Now, with the bride-to-be in custody and
the wedding on hold, Scarlett and Viv must find the real killer
before Ariana’s future is boxed up for good.
Murder at the Book Group

Hazel Rose never dreamed that the

her friend Carlene started would stage
a real murder. Nevertheless, the normally composed Carlene is unusually
angry and rattled one night during a

drinking cyanide-spiked tea. Despite
a suicide note, Hazel is skeptical; Carlene never seemed suicidal – she was busy making plans for her
future.

reads, the closer he could be coming to his final chapter.
Kill ’Em with Cayenne
by Gail Oust
Spices are flying off the shelves of Spice
It Up! and Piper Prescott couldn’t be
happier. It’s that time of year again –
time for the annual Brandywine Creek
Barbecue Festival. Many of Brandywine Creek’s citizens plan to participate
in the weeklong festivities and are busily concocting savory rubs and sassy
sauces. Among the locals vying for
the grand prize are Becca Dapkins and
Maybelle Humphries. The women have
been archenemies ever since Buzz Oliver dumped Maybelle after a 13-year courtship and started seeing Becca. When Becca’s
body is found near one of the festival booths, bludgeoned by
a brisket, Maybelle becomes one of Chief Wyatt McBride’s top
suspects. Determined to help clear her friend’s name, Piper begins her own investigation, much to McBride’s consternation.
Groomed for Murder
by Annie Knox
Izzy McHale wants her new Trendy Tails Pet Boutique in Merryville, Minnesota, to be the height of canine couture and feline
fashions. But in a week of wedding bells, someone is about to
hold their peace, forever. Love is in the
air, and Izzy is hard at work coordinating two special weddings at Trendy Tails.
First, Izzy’s friend and mentor, Ingrid,
will be tying the knot with her old flame.
And a week later, Izzy will host “pupptials” for two lovable dogs. But even
with the hullabaloo, the Trendy Tails
crew is intrigued by Daniel, an enigmatic
writer boarding above the shop who’s caught the attention of
Izzy’s zany aunt Dolly, who gossips like most people breathe.
Unfortunately, it’s Daniel who stops breathing when he drops
dead at the altar on Ingrid’s wedding day.
Death is like a Box of Chocolates
by Kathy Aarons
Whether it’s to satisfy a craving for
chocolate or pick up the hottest new
bestseller, the locals in charming West
Riverdale, Maryland, are heading to
Chocolates and Chapters, where everything sold is to die for. Best friends
Michelle Serrano and Erica Russell are
celebrating the sweet rewards of their
combined bookstore and chocolate
shop by hosting the Great Fudge Cookoff during the town’s Memorial Day weekend Arts Festival. But
success turns bittersweet when Main Street’s portrait photographer is found dead in their store, poisoned by Michelle’s signature truffles. Recipes are included.

housework workout, you can burn even more
calories and tone and strengthen your legs and
core muscles.
While vacuuming or mopping the floor
you can burn 120 calories in 30 minutes, but
try adding a lunge forward with each forward
movement and you can boost that calories
burn.
While dusting, stand on your toes or try
standing on one leg for several seconds to work
core and balancing muscles.
Climbing stairs
with a laundry
basket or cleaning
tools, can burn as
many as 180 calories – try taking the
stairs 2 at a time
