For the love of a child
The Festival of Trees brings Christmas cheer,
and hope for children
T
he Riverside County Regional Medical Center Foundation’s Festival of Trees is scheduled
over five days during Thanksgiving week,
Nov. 23-28, and has grown to attract over 25,000
people, with the number growing each year.
Hundreds of volunteers transform the Riverside
Convention Center into Riverside County’s premier holiday extravaganza. The Festival of Trees
features over 50 elaborately decorated trees,
each with its own
unique theme.
The Festival
is kicked off

with the “Mistletoe Magic Gala,” a black-tie event
on Tuesday evening which includes a formal dinner, entertainment and auctions.
Special areas of the Festival include: Gingerbread Village, filled with wonderful baked goods;
Santa’s Secret Shoppe, where children of all ages
can do their holiday shopping for friends and
family; Santa’s Elves Activity Corner, with dozens
of craft and game activities for children of all ages;
Frosty’s Funland, a “hands-on” activity area where
children participate in various medical related
activities; Sparks of Love Gift Shop, a special
holiday boutique filled with a variety of gifts and
decorations perfect for any

occasion; the Elves Forest, with trees decorated
by local school children; Storytime with Santa,
where children spend a fun morning with Santa;
Family Day, with special attractions to appeal to
the entire family; the Tribute Tree, in honor of the
military services; and the traditional Teddy Bear
Tea Party, which delights the younger crowd and
the young at heart.
Riverside County Regional Medical Center
Foundation’s Festival of Trees “For The Love Of
A Child” is the only major fundraiser benefiting
the pediatric units at the hospital. Proceeds each
year are used to purchase desperately needed and
often life saving equipment for the children’s units
including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the
Child Abuse and Neglect Unit and the Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit.
The Riverside County Regional Medical
Center Foundation was formed in July of 1989 as
a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission
of Riverside County Regional Medical Center to
provide quality medical services to all residents of
Riverside County.
The mission of the Foundation is to support
Riverside County Regional Medical Center by
providing comprehensive and vigorous programs
of community awareness and education, public
relations and fundraising activities.

t Riverside Holiday Tradition
Experience the joy at the 18th Annual
Festival of Lights
C
ome to downtown Riverside and experience the joy of the most dazzling holiday
spectacle south of the North Pole at the
18th Annual Festival of Lights.
The Festival offers five weeks of holiday
merriment in Downtown Riverside, celebrating
the season with family activities that include the
“Switch-On Ceremony,” holiday decorations
and lights on The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa,
Mission Inn Avenue and on City-owned buildings, Inland Empire’s first outdoor ice skating
rink, holiday-themed vendors, entertainment
and, of course, Santa Claus.
It all begins with the flip of a switch on
November 26 at 6:15pm at the “Switch-On
Ceremony” presented by Duane and Kelly
Roberts, owners of The Mission Inn Hotel &
Spa. In one swift move Riverside’s downtown is
instantly illuminated with more than three and
a half million twinkling lights and spectacular
fireworks! The Greater Riverside Chambers of
Commerce and the Festival of Lights Committee, consisting of community volunteers and
local businesses, put in many long hours to
coordinate the Ceremony.
Ice Skating
The magic continues for festivalgoers as they
glide under the stars on an outdoor ice skating
rink, located on Main Street Riverside between
University and Mission Inn Avenues. Ice rink
hours from November 26 to December 18 are
4pm to 9pm Monday through Thursday, 4pm
to 11pm on Friday, noon to 11pm on Saturday
and noon to 10pm on Sunday. Starting December 19, the ice rink hours will be noon to 11pm
every day.
Visitors can enjoy an hour on the ice for
$13, which includes ticket price and skate
rental. Additionally, skating enthusiasts can
purchase a Frequent Skater Card for only $50
which will be good for one skate hour Sunday
through Thursday for the entire month of December. The card will be available for purchase
at the ice rink ticket booth and at City Hall on
the 5th Floor.
In addition to the lights and ice skating, holiday enthusiasts can be dazzled by more than 200
hours of holiday entertainment, unique shopping
and creative dining along Main Street Riverside.
And no holiday experience would be complete
without a visit from the North Pole’s most famous
resident. Santa Claus will be out every night from
November 26 to December 24. Photos with Santa
Claus will be available for purchase.
The Riverside Festival of Lights allows everyone - no matter what age - to be charged with
wonder and anticipation of the magic of the
holidays. Don’t miss your opportunity to be part
of this wonderful Riverside tradition.

Crafts, cars and Christmas
converge in Ontario
A
pair of Ontario traditions come together
to bring the community a unique holiday
experience. The Kiwanis Club of Ontario, in
its 86th year, presents the 28th Annual Christmas on Euclid Handcrafted Arts and Crafts
Fair on December 4, from 9am to 3pm. The fair will include arts and crafts
booths, a classic car show, a business expo, a health/education fair and lots
of mouth watering food choices. Children will have an opportunity to take
photos with Santa and receive free books from Ontario Parkway Kiwanis.
This is a wonderful time to walk up Euclid Avenue from Holt Blvd to “G”
Street and shop for unique holiday gifts made the old fashioned way.
Christmas on Euclid truly is a community event. Ontario Kiwanis is
only able to present Christmas on Euclid with the full help and support of
the City of Ontario and all of its departments, the Ontario Fire and Police
Departments, other Kiwanis clubs and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce
Foundation sponsoring the car show. All the intensive work and long hours
go toward raising funds to support the youth in the community. Proceeds
from the car show will benefit the Ontario City Library Children’s Reading
Room. Proceeds from the Christmas on Euclid event will benefit local community organizations such as The Salvation Army, Kids Come First, local
school programs, youth leadership programs, and scholarships.
Come out and enjoy performances given by students of the OntarioMontclair School District and the Chaffey Joint Unified School District
at the R. Jack Mercer Bandstand at “C” Street and Euclid Ave.
The event is free to attend. For more information, go online to www.

Pomona Harvest Festival
Sparkles with Holiday Delight
T
he Pomona Harvest Festival returns to the LA
County Fairgrounds (Fairplex), Dec. 3-5, bringing a full weekend of shopping, entertainment and
holiday cheer to the Inland Empire.
The Harvest Festivals are the largest indoor arts and
craft shows on the West Coast, boasting over 24,000
handmade treasures. The show began 38 years ago in
San Francisco as a forum for artists and crafts people to
gather together to sell and share their creations. Today,
the Harvest Festival continues its tradition of offering
American handmade crafts, coupled with fun entertainment, delicious food and a unique shopping atmosphere.
For one weekend, hundreds of artisans come together
to exhibit and sell items such as jewelry, photographs,
sculptures, pottery, toys, accessories, clothing, specialty
foods, home décor and more.
Each participating vendor must be juried into the
show, assuring that only the highest quality products
are offered. Many attendees love interacting with the
renowned artists who create each individual item,
watching live crafting demonstrations and getting their
purchases personalized.
Throughout the day, the Pomona Harvest Festival
features live music and entertainment acts that are fun
for the whole family. Comedic juggling duo Scotty and
Trink will awe audiences as they balance on their unicycles, telling jokes and juggling sharp knives. Also appearing on the main entertainment stage is Come Back
Buddy, a vintage rock and roll band playing the hits of
Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and, of course, Buddy Holly.
The official charity of the show is Steven’s Hope for
Children, a non-profit organization assisting children
and their families during the financially and emotionally
challenging time of a child’s rehabilitation away from
home. The mission of Steven’s Hope for Children is to
enhance the lives of families of seriously ill or injured
children by providing housing and other essential needs
during a child’s extended treatment and care. The
Pomona Harvest Festival is also recognizing the needs of
the hungry during the holiday season and has partnered
with Shepherd’s Pantry Food Bank to provide a $2
discount admission coupon to anyone who brings a nonperishable food contribution to the event.
The Pomona Harvest Festival Original Art and Craft
Show runs Friday, 9am-6pm, Saturday, 10am-6pm, and
Sunday, 10am-5pm. Tickets are $9 for adults, $7 for
seniors (62+), $5 youth (13-17), $5 for advance group
(10+) and free for kids 12 and under. For tickets and additional information, call (415) 447-3205 or visit www.

Winter fun
The snow thickens for mountain tubing
A
s winter approaches beautiful white snow to
play on - and tons of it - is in the forecast for
the inner tubing hills at Big Bear Snow Play
and Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain.
Both recreation areas have Lenko fan guns
blasting prodigious amounts of snow onto their
inner tubing runs throughout the season, piling
up all the white stuff families need to frolic in a
winter wonderland. As winter progresses Alpine
Slide and Big Bear Snow Play will have snow
depths of 30 feet or more...that’s right, three
stories high! This is more than enough snow to
ensure inner tubing thrills through Easter and
beyond. Snow is groomed nightly at both areas to
provide a perfect corduroy surface for tubing.
Big Bear’s two world class inner tubing areas
make it easy to get to the top of all the snow,
too. Just step onto the Magic Carpet uphill lifts
at Alpine Slide and Big Bear Snow Play and be
whisked back to the top in moments for your next
twisting, turning, high-speed downhill descent.
Magic Carpet lifts are also covered in Plexiglass to
ensure guest comfort.
Guests choose between traditional downhill
runs or a boardercross-style series of twisting,
turning berms known as “Snakes.” Sliders whip
back and forth and up and down through the
turns during a ride way different from the normal
straight-line downhill.
The youngest riders enjoy “Kiddie” hills
removed from the faster tubers.
After dark on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday
periods at Alpine Slide, the lights turn on as the
stars come out for night tubing. Grooming after
the day session means night tubers get more
corduroy and the snow gets faster as the evening
progresses, making for a wild ride through the
shadows under the lights. Night tubing is from
5pm to 9pm and costs $15, perfect for those who
want to ski by day and play after dark.
Day tubing sessions at Alpine Slide and Big
Bear Snow Play are from 10am to 4pm daily and
cost $25, which includes tube rental and Magic
Carpet lift pass.
Alpine Slide is also home to the signature
bobsled-like ride of the same name. Experience
many of the same gravitational forces Olympians
feel during your descent down two quarter-mile
long cement tracks aboard sleds with ball-bearing
wheels that you actually control. Go faster or
slower and lean into each banked turn before
tucking through the straightaways.
Head to the Putt `N Around go-karts for more
fast-paced excitement. Each is loaded with an array of safety features including professional-grade
restraint systems, roll bars and more. Zip around
the tire-lined track with high-banked turn, curves
and straightaways...there’s even double seaters so
young riders can go with a parent.
Alpine Slide and Big Bear Snow Play, a former
ski area with the longest tubing runs in Southern
California, each have nice heated lodges with family priced snack bars and video games.
Alpine Slide is 1/4 mile west of the Village
shopping area, home to 60 specialty stores. For
more information, call (909) 866-4626. Big Bear
Snow Play is on Big Bear Blvd. three miles east of
Alpine Slide next to Motel 6. For more information, call (909) 585-0075. IER

Eagles, Bunnies and Stars
Team up with a star at the Fantasy

F
or one weekend this November, Fantasy
Springs Resort Casino fills the desert with
eagles, birdies and bunnies. No cute, fuzzy
animals here. Nov. 12 and 13, Hollywood
celebrities and Playboy models descend on the
resort-casino for a weekend filled with parties,
lots of golf at Eagle Falls Golf Course and opportunities for the public to meet people they
may only see on television or in magazines.
Now in its fourth year, the Playboy Golf
Scramble at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino
brings golf action to the course during the day
and exclusive players parties to the casino at
night.
Golfers find out which celebrity will be
playing in their foursome during the Friday
night pairings party. Judging by the photos
from last year’s event, the pairings party is certainly a place to see and be seen. The pairings
party is also the first time golfers will get the
chance to meet and mingle with the six beautiful Playboy Playmates.
On Saturday, golfers hit the links at 10am,
trying to get the best score of the 36 foursomes.
More fun and games await golfers at each hole
as the Playboy Girls of Golf cheer them on
and help them compete for prizes. Prizes for
the best golfers are awarded on Saturday night.
Adding to the star power of last year’s Playboy

Holiday event raises funds for abused children
A
gala event this month can end with a beautiful
Christmas tree delivered to your home, and with the
life of an abused child forever changed for the better.
The Inland Valley Chapter of Childhelp is hosting
Forest of Hope, an evening of delicious food, music
to dance by, and wonderful grand prizes such as
Southwest Airline tickets. The event raises funds
for Childhelp, a charity with the goal of improving the lives of abused, neglected and at-risk
children.
The main event for Forest of Hope is a
showcase for elegantly decorated trees, whose
tickets are selling for just $2 each. The event
will be held on Nov. 19, at 6:30pm, at the
Fox Theater in Redlands. For more information call (909) 362-9429. For more
information about Childhelp, go to
www.childhelp.org.
The Childhelp story begins in
1959 with two young actresses
being chosen to go to Tokyo
to entertain our troops. While
there, they had a chance encounter with 11 homeless
orphans. This meeting
changed their lives
forever.
Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson searched orphanage
after orphanage for homes for these children to no avail. They
finally found a woman who had already taken in 10 children
and promised to help care for all of them. They also got some of
the military to build on to Mama Kin’s house. By the time these
two young friends finished their tour, they had 100 American
orphans in their care.
Upon returning to the United States, they founded International Orphans, Inc. to provide support for these children.
Eventually, IOI grew to operate four orphanages in Tokyo. In
1966, the actresses were asked to help the children in Vietnam.
With the aid of the Third Marine Amphibious Force, they built
orphanages, a hospital and a school. When our troops pulled out,
Sara and Yvonne arranged for “Operation Baby Lift,” which flew
thousands of children to adoptive homes in America.
In 1978 Governor Reagan’s wife asked them to help fight
child abuse in this country. That year they found a facility near
Beaumont, California where they were able to develop a residential treatment center for severely abused children, Children’s
Village, USA. Its name has changed several times, but not the
therapeutic programs, or the assisted therapies such as art, animal, wilderness, and music. In addition, through the years many
other programs have been initiated.
As can well be imagined the cost of all these facilities cannot
be covered by the government. Childhelp now has volunteers
throughout the United States who belong to Chapters with the
purpose of raising funds. IER

T
here’s never a bad time to weatherize your home
with simple conservation efforts. And there’s
never been more ways to earn cash back for your
efforts than now through Riverside Public Utilities’
(RPU) Weatherization Rebate Program. The Weatherization program is a whole house approach to improving the energy efficiency of your Riverside home.
Do you know that insulating your home is one
of the most practical and cost effective ways you can
maximize its energy efficiency and save on heating
and cooling cost that make up a large percentage of
your energy bill? It’s true! And in addition to offering
great rebates for installing select attic and wall insulation products, RPU also offers weatherization rebates
for installing energy-efficient, Energy Star rated entry
doors and windows; whole house fans; attic vent fans
(solar or electric); duct insulation; duct sealing and

By utilizing one of these qualifying weatherization efforts, or combining several of them
together, you can make your home more energy
efficient, which can lead to lower utility bills.
When combined with the City’s Whole House
Rebate program you can also earn even greater
rebates back, up to 250% more (for a maximum
of $7,000), that can help further offset the costs
of your improvements.

F
eed me, Seymour! Little Shop of Horrors is
the next offering from Performance Riverside, opening Nov. 12. The upbeat musical
spoof of sci-fi movies is well-known and loved
by a wide audience from its successful 1986 film
version starring comedians Steve Martin, Rick
Moranis, Bill Murray and John Candy. The
stage musical and film versions were adapted by
Alan Menken and Howard Ashman from the
Roger Corman film, with original screenplay by
Charles Griffith.
If the names Alan Menken and Howard
Ashman sound familiar, they should: they’re
the successful musical duo behind such Disney
classics as Beauty and the Beast and The Little
Mermaid. This original production, directed by
Ashman, with musical staging by Edie Cowan,
was critically acclaimed and won several awards
including the 1982-1983 New York Drama
Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the
Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical,
and the Outer Critics Circle Award. Howard
Ashman wrote, in the introduction to the acting
edition of the libretto, that the show “satirizes
many things: science fiction, ‘B’ movies, musical
comedy itself, and even the Faust legend.”
The Story: Seymour Krelborn is a nerdy
orphan working at Mushnik’s, a flower shop
in urban Skid Row. He harbors a crush on
fellow co-worker Audrey, and is berated by Mr.
Mushnik daily. One day Seymour finds a very
mysterious unidentified plant which he calls
Audrey II. The plant seems to have a sinister
craving and soon begins to sing for its supper!
To what extremes will Seymour go to feed his
strange visitor from another planet? Will Audrey
II take over the world or will Seymour and
Audrey defeat it?
The production is directed and choreographed by Roger Castellano with music
directed by Scott Smith, and produced by Rey
O’Day, Performance Riverside’s Producing Artistic Director. The cast features David Aldrete,
Alyssa Marie, Erica Bowers, Ashley Gallo, Jason
Graham, Isaac James, Jasmin Madison, Morgan
Reynolds and M. Darnell Suttles.
Little Shop of Horrors plays Nov. 12, 13, 19,
and 20 at 2pm, and Nov. 13, 14, 20, and 21 at
8pm at Landis Performing Arts Center, 4800
Magnolia Avenue in Riverside. Tickets are $27,

parties of 10 or more. The Landis Box Office is

Sinfonia Christmas concert features ‘Divas’
S
infonia Mexicana’s annual Christmas
concert, “Mariachi Christmas,” will be held
Saturday, Dec. 11, 7pm, at the beautiful
and historic California Theatre of Performing Arts, 562 W. 4th Street (between E and F
streets) in downtown San Bernardino.
Featured are the American Grammy award
winning Mariachi Divas, Mariachi Espectacular de Alberto Jimenez, the colorful and
exuberant Folklorico Ollin, with a special
presentation by Sinfonia Mexicana’s Mariachi
Youth Academy students.
Founded and directed by trumpet player Cindy Shea in 1999, Mariachi Divas is making big
waves on the national music scene. Mariachi
Divas are a unique, multi-cultural, all female ensemble, and have been represented by women of
Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Argentinean, Colombian, Panamanian, Puerto Rican, Swiss, Japanese,
Honduran, Peruvian, Tongan and Anglo descents.
Cindy Shea states, “Music is a way of uniting our
cultural backgrounds.”
In 2009, Mariachi Divas won the Grammy
Award for Best Regional Mexican Album of
the year for their 2008 release, Canciones De
Amor. This marks the first time in the history of
the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences that an all-female mariachi group has been
a winner.
Mariachi Divas has appeared at Southern California venues such as Arrowhead Pond, Universal
Amphitheater, Staples Center, the Greek Theatre,
the Santa Barbara Bowl, the House of Blues, the
LA Forum and the Shrine Auditorium. The group
has also accompanied Grammy-winning artists
such as Joan Sebastian, Jenny Rivera, Marco Antonio Solis, Pablo Montero, Graciela Beltran and
Paulina Rubio. Divas has performed dozens of
shows with the world-renowned Mariachi Vargas.
Born to a family with generations of talented
mariachi musicians, Alberto Jimenez, also known
as “Beto,” has sustained this tradition and has continually blazed new trails in the mariachi world.
Born in Mexico City, Alberto Jimenez attended
the Nacional School of Music in Mexico City
where he studied theory, composition and musical
arranging. Alberto Jimenez became a member of
the Mariachi De America De Jesus Rodriguez de
Hijar in 1985 and continued to be an esteemed
member for 20 years.
In 2005, Alberto Jimenez was invited to Los
Angeles, to participate and arrange the Mariachi
Divas “Asi Somos” CD. In
2006, he moved to Los Angeles,
to assume the position of Musical
Director for the Mariachi Divas.
For over a quarter century,
Ballet Folklorico Ollin has been
one of the premiere Mexican
folk dance groups in the United
States. They have performed with
Mariachi
many of the greatest names in
Espectacular de
Mexican music, including Linda
Alberto Jimenez
Ronstadt, Lola Beltran, Vikki
Carr, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, and Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. Established in February 2009, students of
the Mariachi Youth Academy are given lessons
at the Sturges Center for the Fine Arts in San
Bernardino. The group has performed at the
House of Blues in Anaheim and placed third
in the Battle of Mariachi Bands in San Juan
Capistrano in June 2009.

S
cottish-American comedian Craig Ferguson, perhaps
best known as the host of the Late Late Show with
Craig Ferguson, makes a stop in the Palm Springs area
for one night only on Friday, Dec. 3 at 8pm. The Scottishborn comedian, actor and former punk rock drummer will
perofrm at the Special Events Center inside Fantasy Springs
Resort Casino.
Tickets for this show are $39-$69 and are available at
the Fantasy Springs Box Office, via telephone at (800) 8272946 or online at www.FantasySpringsResort.com.
Craig Ferguson had been a fixture on British television
throughout the 1980s. He moved to the United States in
the mid-1990s where he landed a role on the short-lived
ABC comedy Maybe This Time. In 1995 he was cast in a
role he kept until 2004, the boss, Mr. Wick, on The Drew
Carey Show. In the beginning of 2005, he took over the reigns of the Late Late Show on CBS
where he remains entertaining night owls to this day. Ferguson also has not forgotten his
standup comedy roots, however. While in a punk band in Glasgow, Scotland, according to a
New York Times article, one of the band members suggested he try doing comedy.

Felder was one of the five members and former
lead guitarist of the rock group the Eagles for 27
years. Credited with adding a rock and roll edge to
their country sound, he wrote the music for their
biggest hit, the multi Grammy award winning
song “Hotel California.”
With 14 Grammy nominations and 4 wins,
his signature guitar work has become legendary
on songs like “Hotel California,” “Life In The
Fast Lane,” “One Of These Nights,” “New Kid In
Town,” and the list goes on. Felder and the Eagles
also hold the honor of having the first Platinum
album certified by the RIAA. That album, The
Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has reached
over 26 million copies, becoming the best-selling
album of the 20th century.
A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame since 1998, Felder is now writing and
recording songs for an upcoming solo project
and touring worldwide. He has most recently
become a New York Times bestselling author
Famous songwriter Neil Sedaka will be
making an appearance Thanksgiving weekend,
performing on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 8pm.
The history of Rock N’ Roll would be
incomplete without the innumerable contributions of Neil Sedaka. For over 50 years, Sedaka
has written, performed, produced, and inspired
countless songs.
Sedaka catapulted into stardom after Connie
Francis recorded his “Stupid Cupid.” Sedaka soon
recorded chart toppers “The Diary,” “Oh! Carol,”
“ Stairway to Heaven,” “Calendar Girl,” “Little
Devil,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” “Next
Door To An Angel,” and “Breaking Up Is Hard
