Message Message
Editor’s
Another year has gone by like the blink
of an eye! It seemed like yesterday when
the Rooster was crowing, breaking the
silence of dawn at the beginning of 2005.
On January 29 this year the dog, man’s
best friend, made its presence felt all
around us with characteristic loud barks
and bites, ushering in the K-9 year with
thunderous fireworks and a boisterous
big bang!
It must be obvious to everyone that I am quite generous with my
compliment in respect of the management committee and the staff of
KGS. This is deliberately done for I am a great believer in positive thinking.
Credit must be given where credit is due. Giving the club full marks to
begin with would give me an added advantage from the point of view
of the critic and commentator. From now on the team would have to do
its very best to constantly retain the full marks, because from now on,
we will be watching their performance with the watchful eye of a
watchdog, to make sure they maintain the standard expected of them
and any slide down the slope will be frowned upon, and club members
will give them a timely reminder that there is work to be done, done
properly and diligently.
Once more spring returned to earth and every living thing renewed itself.
That was the pastoral message invoked in this classic and time-honoured
expression : “Kong Xi Fa Cai”.
Speaking of vital signs, KGS was proud to have started on the right
footing by playing host to our first royal visitor for 2006, namely, DYMM
Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, Sultan of Terengganu and entourage. On
hand to accompany the Sultan to the club was our own Head of State,
TYT Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin. They played
a friendly golf tournament at the Matang and Santubong courses on
the afternoon of February 8. The Sultan was indeed impressed with our
golfing facilities and promised to return to KGS for another round of
golf in the not-too-distant future, Insya Allah. Again, on the 19th of
February, 2006, our Prime Minister YAB Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad
Badawi led the BN Back Benchers Club golf team to test their golfing
skills against the Sarawak State Government team. With a perfect playing
condition at Matang/Santubong golf course, the participating golfers
thoroughly enjoyed their outing.
On New Year Eve, as we tossed the yee-sang (the traditional Chinese
New Year dish) we reaffirmed our belief that doing so would bring good
health, wealth, longevity and good luck to all. Undeniably, such a state
of mind and such unbridled optimism about our future helped us to
feel good about our world and about everything around us. Yes, as the
saying goes, every dog has its day. Thanks to the good dog, club members
can look forward to a gratifyingly positive and prosperous year ahead.
There must be vital signs - in canine terms - that can be used to gauge
the prospects of 2006, as far as KGS is concerned. There are many. First
and foremost, we have a new, rejuvenated and reinvigorated management committee returned unopposed at the last AGM, ready to spring
forth to carry on with the task for which it had been mandated. New
faces with fresh new blood have been brought in to inject new ideas
into club management. Arguably, the first and most important assignment for the new management committee is to go on a recruiting drive
for a suitably qualified and experienced general manager. KGS can ill
afford to go on without appointing a permanent one, considering the
important leadership role a GM plays in the physical development, fiscal well being and in the smooth running of a club such as KGS. No armed
forces of a given country can function properly without an effective and
efficient general. By the same token, to be effective and efficient, KGS
badly needs a general (manager, that is).
Deeply humbled by such a rare and singular honour, we were
nevertheless very proud of the fact that KGS was selected as the venue
to host the first friendly golf tournament between the team of DYMM
the Sultan of Terengganu and the team of TYT Yang Di Pertua Negeri
Sarawak, and the first BN Back Benchers team led by YAB the Prime
Minister versus the State Government’s team. The State Protocol, the
Armed Forces, the management committee, staff and the catering
department deserve our congratulations for putting up a splendid post
game and prize giving reception to showcase the hospitality of our club
to our royal visitor and our beloved Prime Minister. If these auspicious
events were any indication, the year of the dog augurs well for KGS. Well
done everyone!
The first few weeks, well after Chap Goh Mei, have been wet and soggy
around here. The fairways are damp and dreary. But our legendary fourlegged friend, saying it with dogged determination, maintains there is a
silver lining around every cloud hovering above us. The dampness is
temporary and will soon disappear, blown away by the gentle breeze
and washed off by the passing showers. As usual, the hardy and resilient
KGS members will not be deterred in their outdoor pursuit of sporting
activities, not by such minor inconveniences. Consistent with the
character traits of the dog, and judging by the enthusiasm shown by
our golfing fraternity, the year under the dog’s reign will be productive
and profitable, for club members and for everybody else.

The team of dedicated staff, under the able leadership of acting GM Miss
Wang Kheng Boi, is all fired up to jump into action with passion and
commitment, to put club machinery into full gear and provide quality
service to deserving members. I salute Miss Wang for taking up the heavy
responsibility of holding the fort so admirably, this by the way, for the
third time. All efforts combined, we can expect improvement in the
quality of service and club facilities for the year under review.

Captain’s Message
Captain’s
Message
Dear Fellow Members,
increasing interest amongst members in contributing to the
better management of our beloved club. The same is true for
the Captain’s committee, and I would like to thank all my
subcommittee chairpersons for accepting the appointment and
look forward to their contribution and support.
Firstly, I would like to register my
sincere thanks and gratitude to
all members for the opportunity
to serve all of you and the Club
for another term of 2 years
(2006/2007) as your Captain. I’m
deeply mindful of the
tremendous responsibilities that
go with the position and will do
my utmost best to make our
Club..................... a place like no other.
In so far as the course maintenance is concerned, our focus for
the new year will be to do a phased improvement of the Siol/
Demak course, whilst continuing with the normal maintenance
of Matang/Santubong. We will be drawing up a detailed 3monthly work programme and this will be shared with members
in advance. Given the tight budget within which we have to
operate, the prioritisation of the various work programme
becomes all the more important. The key consideration will be
to minimise inconvenience to golfers, whilst trying to achieve
optimum work efficiency.
This year’s landas season seemed to have been prolonged to
the extent that even into the second half of February. We are
still experiencing heavy down pours. For the avid golfers, and
there are many amongst us, this has taken away much pleasure
from the weekend golf that all of us looked forward to.
During the month of February, 2006 we played host to 2 VVIPs!
On 8th February, 2006, DYMM Sultan of Terengganu played at
our Matang/Santubong course, accompanied by our beloved
Tuan Yang Terutama, Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji
Muhammad Sallahuddin. On 19th February, 2006, YAB Datuk Seri
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, our Prime Minister, led the Barisan
Nasional Back Benchers Club team to play against our State
Government’s team. Both the VVIP’s enjoyed their game at KGS
and gave the course high marks for the design as well as the
playing conditions. We thank them for their visit and look
forward to them gracing our club with their presence again.
As a result, the regular maintenance of the Siol/Demak course
has been severely affected; making play on this course
somewhat “slow”, with a lot of time spent looking for embedded
balls on or just off the fairway. Fortunately, the Matang/
Santubong course is in much better condition, even though
some fairways are often “water-logged” after days of continuous
rain. With the rainy season coming to an end, hopefully, we are
all looking forward in earnest, to a promising start of the new
golfing season.
Our annual KGS Match Play games would have kicked off by
the time this issue of the Golfer magazine reaches you, providing
the welcome excitement to move us into high gear for the rest
of the year. This year we have 20 teams participating; may the
best team emerge victorious!
Finally, I would like to wish all members and their families a
HAPPY and HEALTHY 2006, Happy Clubbing and Happy
Golfing.
The tournament sub-committee has once again drawn up an
exciting golfing calendar for the rest of the year for all; and I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all the generous
sponsors, in advance, for their continued support.

What About T nnis?
If golf is not the game for your children, let them have a shot at tennis. KGS now offers
Junior Tennis Programme for members’ children below 18 years of age of all levels.
The main objective of the Programme is to promote the game amongst the youngsters.
Coaching clinics are conducted in small groups to ensure the students learn the proper
techniques from a young age.
The details ......
Lessons :
Every Saturday
9:00 am – 10:30 am
Every Sunday
3:30 pm – 5:00 pm
(Students may attend either one or both
lessons)
Coaching Fee:

Know the Game ...
...
Tennis can be picked up at any age. Some players start as young as three
years old, some in their teens and some even during their adult years.
... Tennis can be played from junior years into one’s 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and
beyond.
... If you are not a competitive type, tennis is an activity you can enjoy socially
in a friendly game of singles, doubles or mixed doubles.
... Playing tennis for an hour offers the same workout benefits as an-hour long
aerobics class.
... Tennis could get you a college scholarship in the United States or allow you to
see the sights of the world if you become good enough to turn professional.
...
Tennis, most important of all like all other sports, builds character. Winning is a
lot of fun but it’s not everything.

Gym Instructor
OVERTRAINING
Over training is the number-one mistake among the gym members.
Whether you are aiming for fitness training or body building, you are trying to
put on size, but failing to reach your potential.
Most gym members often get so focused on completing their target reps. They
begin to sacrifice form. If you’re doing this, then you’re creating an environment
for injury. Using perfect form to achieve your goal will help you prevent injury
and help provide a guideline for understanding when you have reached failure.
If you cannot complete a rep with perfect form, then stop. You have already given
your body the maximum load it can handle.
As a bodybuilder, you have to devote only an hour or so a day to your training.
For the rest of the day, you should focus on nutrition and rest, rest and rest. Many
trainees get sloppy with their nutrition, skipping a meal here and there. If you
want to make size gains, then schedule your meals and eat whether you’re hungry
or not. Waiting until you’re hungry means you aren’t providing your body with a
steady stream and nutrients. Your body won’t have a continual supply of building
blocks at its disposal for ultimate muscle growth.
Concentration Curl (15 Reps x 3 sets)
Nothing is more relaxing after a hard day of workout and training then to hang
out with friends and have beers, right? Who cares that you have to get up early
and do it all again the next day? Well, your body does. Even if you don’t feel it the
way others seem to, ravaging yourself with late night partying or simply not
getting proper rest eventually takes its toll on your physique.
‘Rest’ is the most important factor for muscle growth. The average person
needs eight hours of sleep a night and bodybuilders are more than average. You
may need nine or more hours of sleep a night for maximum growth. Also be
mindful that recovery goes beyond sleep. Relaxation activities and
supplementation can have a major impact on your ability to recover. Relaxation
can be focused on such activities as massage, yoga, meditation, watching TV or
simply spending a relaxing evening at home.
Eating is just as important as training if you want to maximise mass gains. You
must keep your body consistently supplied with all the nutrients it can use, so
eat five or six regularly spaced meal throughout the day. Make sure each meal
contains adequate protein, the key ingredient to build muscle tissue.
Preacher Curl (12 -15 Reps x 3 sets)
The rule of thumb is 11/2 grams per pound of bodyweight. For example, if your weight is 200 pounds, you need about 300
grams of protein per day.
Carbohydrates : your key energy sources are carbohydrate and the
other essential nutrients for gaining bodyweight. Too many
carbohydrates can result in excess body fats. So keep track of what you
are consuming so you can adjust your intake required.
Sticking to your plan consistently encompasses all aspects to
get the most form. As for your bodybuilding regimen, charting out all
the details of your day and stick to the plan. Train on your training days,
rest on your rest day. Eat your meals when you’re supposed to and Happy
Training !!

Title : At First Sight
Author : Nicholas Sparks
Title : Relative Love
Author : Amanda Brookfield
There are a few things Jeremy Marsh was sure he’d never
do: he’d never leave New York City: never give his heart
away after barely surviving one failed marriage: and,
never become a parent.
Now Jeremy is living in the tiny town of Boone Creek,
North Carolina, engaged to Lexie Darnell, the love of
his life, and anticipating the start of their family. But
just as his life seems to be settling into a blissful pattern,
a mysterious and disturbing e-mail sets off a chain of
events that will change the course of this young couple’s
marriage.
How well do we really know the one we love? How do
we handle the inevitable doubts, fears concerning
parenthood, and stumbling blocks that are sometimes
placed in our way? Continuing of the story of the young
couple introduced in Sparks’s best-selling True
Believer, this novel captures all the heartbreak, tension,
romance, and surprises of those who are newly wed.
An astonishing tale about the love between a man and
a woman and between a parent and a child. A T FIRST
SIGHT is about endings that bring new beginnings
and tragedies that lead to unexpected joy and most of
all, the magic of everlasting love.
The Harrison’s have gathered for Christmas at their big country
house. It’s a tight safe world of festivity and tradition – but this
year, reality is encroaching. Time is catching up with Pamela and
John. And troubles are brewing in the lives of their children.
Cassie, the cosseted youngest, is in the throes of a secret affair with
a married man while awkward Elizabeth struggles with faltering
second marriage. Peter, who will inherit Ashley House, is beginning
to meet resistance to the idea from his career-orientated wife. Only
carefree Charlie and his serene wife seem truly content, having
nothing to worry about except their adolescent twin girls and the
simpler teething troubles of their toddler.
Change, when it arrives, strikes in the form of
a tragedy of the most unforeseeable and
devastating kind. The family, so apparently
begin to unravel secrets past and present are
exposed, laying bare the fragility of human
happiness, and the myriad faces of love in
an imperfect world.

Title : Memoirs Of A Geisha
Author : Arthur Golden
This is a rare and utterly engaging story. It tells an
extraordinary tale of a geisha – summoning up a quarter
century from 1929 to the post-war years of Japan’s dramatic
history and opening a window to a half-hidden world of
eroticism and enchantment, exploitation and degradation.

The Guardian Angel’s Mistake
A 51-year old lady golfer was enjoying her golf under the
glorious weather condition. On the 15th tee box, she had a
Jokes
Jokes
heart attack just after teeing off. She was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
While on the operating table she had a near-death experience. During that experience, she saw her guardian angel
and asked if this was her time. The angel said no and explained that she had another 30-40 years to live.
Upon her recovery, she decided to just stay in the hospital for a few more days to have a facelift, liposuction and a
tummy tuck. She even had someone come in and change her hair colour. She figured that since she had another
30 or 40 years she might as well make the most of it. She walked out of the hospital after the last operation and
was killed by an ambulance speeding up to the ICU building next to the hospital.
She arrived in heaven. There, she saw her guardian angel and said, “I thought you said I had another 30 – 40
years!!”
The angel replied, “Sorry, I didn’t recognise you.”
Build Me A Bridge
A golfer walking along Damai Beach was deep in prayer. Suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a
booming voice, the Lord said, “Because you have TRIED to play golf in honest ways, never cheating, never lying,
I will grant you one wish.”
The golfer said, “Build a bridge to Johor Bahru so I can drive over anytime I want.” The Lord said, “Your request
is very materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach
the bottom of South China Sea! The concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural
resources. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think
of something that would honour and glorify me.”
The pensive golfer thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, “Lord, I wish that I could understand my wife.
I want to know how she feels inside, what she’s thinking when she gives me the silent treatment when I come
home after a game of golf, why she cries, what she means when she says ‘nothing’s wrong,’ and how I can make
a woman truly happy.”
The Lord replied, “You want two lanes or four on that bridge?”
