Usually, shoppers entering shops will tend to turn to their right. Research also shows
the right hand aisles in supermarkets get increased flows. For you this means you
need to pay special attention to what you do with the right hand side of your shop.

It is another place where traffic is very concentrated as shoppers wait their turn to be
served. Use this area to sell unplanned purchases or purchases on impulse. It is the

PROFITABLE TOY VENDING MACHINE
I installed a vending machine selling
children’s toys outside my store about one
year ago. It has proven popular with the
children in my area, as I earn more than
RM200 a month from its sales. Not only do I
profit from toy sales, I also see an increase

Two brothers saw a golden
opportunity and opened a retail
store in a new township. Although
business was slow early on, sales
began to boom as more people
started moving in. While his
brother has since migrated, Dev
Anand a/l Pandurengan still runs
the business successfully. We speak
to him to find out how his business
continues to thrive.
Tell us how did Super Star Store
come about?
Before, I was working in a factory
until it fell bankrupt. My brother
brought up the idea of opening a
kedai runcit in a new Menglembu
township. When the store opened in
2003, business was so slow that we
earned under RM100 daily.
However, our patience paid off and
business picked up by 2006 as
more residents moved into the area.

How do you cope with the increased business?
About two years ago, the neighbouring corner lot was available. I jumped at the
opportunity and rented the lot to expand my shop. I now have two lots side by
side. As a result, my business grew further and I rented the shoplot opposite to be
my storeroom. Furthermore, I am looking for another storeroom!

What attracts shoppers to your store?
I sell a large number of household goods from a wide range of brands. I am also
well-stocked with fresh vegetables, rice and fish, which are highly in demand. My
shoppers are spoilt for choice and don’t need to travel far to shop. As an added
advantage, I believe I have many return shoppers because I make it a point to
build good relationships with them. My shoppers are satisfied with the service and
price of my goods.

What is your advice to other retailers?
Even when presented with a golden opportunity, you need to keep working hard to
make your business prosper. Never give up, and work towards achieving your
personal goals and you will definitely see the fruits of your labour.
