How to create your own magazine from start to finish.

W
ant to ignite your kids’ imagination and get them excited about
writing? Have them create their
own magazine and watch their creativity and
problem solving skills shine. The key is to
make sure they select a topic that truly excites them. Once they get started, they’ll take
full ownership and amaze you with their enthusiasm. The advantage of this kind of project is that your kids will be practicing writing
in various genres in a meaningful context. It
will also develop all levels of learning from
lowest to highest — knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and
evaluation — in an appealing way. Your kids
will be learning advanced skills while having
fun. That’s the best way to learn!
PREPARATION
Have your child choose a favorite activity or hobby, such
as photography, snowboarding, playing the guitar, or collecting baseball cards. This will become the theme of the magazine. Help them create an engaging title for it that will grab
prospective readers’ attention. Decide on how many pages
the magazine will be and when the complete project will be
due, adjusting the length, difficulty, and time allotted to your
child’s grade level and ability. Determine the length and quantity of each type of writing so the total is equal to the total
number of pages in the magazine.
MATERIALS NEEDED
Heavy stock paper
Standard computer paper
Stapler or three ring binder and three-ring hole punch
Scissors
Glue stick
A magazine is like a jigsaw puzzle because it’s composed
of many small parts that fit neatly together within a predetermined amount of space. For that reason, you’ll need
to create a scrapbook-like base in which to piece together the individual elements of the magazine. For the base
pages, use heavy stock 8-1/2" x 17" paper. These sheets
will fold into 8-1/2" x 11" pages, which can be stapled
together along the spine to form the scrapbook.” (Or
you can use a three-ring binder to hold single 8-1/2" x
11" pages.) The completed articles can be handwritten
or printed out on standard blank paper and pasted on
either side of the stock paper pages using glue sticks. For
artwork, students can draw or sketch illustrations, cut
photos from other magazines, or print photos from the
Internet from a copyright-free website such as Pixabay.
SAMPLE MAGAZINE PROJECT
The following project is an example of how you might
outline the project. Develop more detailed instructions
and a due date for each assignment to break down the
magazine into smaller, more manageable parts.
Assignment: A 32-page magazine on snowboarding
for an eighth grade student.

Layout and Design: Once all the sections are completed, have your child create the table of contents, pre-planning the page placement of each element. Then have him
carefully glue each element into place in the scrapbook.
Once the magazine is finished, have your child share his
masterpiece with friends and family. He’ll no doubt be
proud of his accomplishment and you’ll likely face less
resistance with future writing assignments because of his
enthusiasm with this project.
Due Date: Completed magazine due in 10 weeks.
