President’s Message: Cathleen Martelli
To the Membership,
The most recent informational email from our national association, (N.A.H.B.) included what I believe to be a valuable educational
webinar. The webinar series addresses how “the consumer decision-making prcess has completely changed. Today’s buyers have
dozens of digital resourses—Facebook, Google, Yelp-at their fintertips for evaluating purchases from new shoes to new homes.”
I have seen firsthand how far reaching Facebook can be and how Facebook advertising can be effective. Google offers excellent
marketing methods that both drive traffic to our sites and educate the consumer.
The sessions through the N.A.H.B. “focus on specific knowledge areas like finance, new home sales, and social media to help you
and your company compete-and succeed-in building’s brave new world.”
For more information, visit nahb.org/NewNormal. I hope you’ll attend one or all the webinars.
And, as your schedule begins to fill for this building season, please think about hiring an intern. The experience
an intern can receive working alongside a tradesman is invaluable preparedness for becoming a future hire in our
industry.
Kindest Regards,
Cathleen Martelli
Associates Council: Joe Kozuch, Chair
Spring is here, hopefully, and we are just around the corner from our first golf committee meeting of the season
which means summer and the golf outing are in sight! Plan for Wednesday, July 23 at Sandy Ridge Golf Course.
Also, even though we don’t want to think about Holiday time yet, we are moving our Holiday Event back to the
original Wednesday date of December 3 this year at the Great Hall Banquet & Convention Center.
More details to come on these events and everything in-between!
Thanks! Joe Kozuch, Associates Council Chair
Remodelers Council: Mike Kozuch, Chair
Happy Spring! Finally!
What a brutal winter; hopefully, now with the weather straightening out we all can be more productive. There is
much in the way of encouraging news and positive indicators for “a sustained period of growth for the building and
remodeling sectors in Michigan” as noted in the most recent issue of the Michigan Builder magazine. It is shaping
up to be a great year for our HBA members. We look forward to our next meeting at Premier Tile & Stone on 4/16
at 6pm. Please RSVP to the office if you are planning on attending.
Regards, Mike Kozuch, Chairman Remodelers Council

2014 Home and Garden Show!
I have been involved in the Home and Garden Show for over 20 years, and I can’t remember a better, more
satisfying show, both from a committee member and vendor standpoint. Why? The team. You should be
proud of your fellow members who worked so hard to make this event successful (our largest non-dues revenue event!) Without their fresh ideas, legwork and hours, it would not have come off nearly as well as it
did.
I would like to personally thank the following people for answering the call when the phone rang. Without
your help, it just wouldn’t have been the same:
Mike Kozuch, Mike Rapanos, Meleah Retzloff, Kim Harvey, Matt Weckesser, Bev Garchow, Chuck Servinski,
Chad Gilstad, Dick Peterson, Nickie Weckesser, Bullock Creek Building Trades students, Gary Shaffner, E. J.
LeBeau, Chris Ratcliffe, Christine Dole, Midland Public Schools Building Trades students, Kevin Dodick, Chad
Moody, Tom Watson, Jan Szegda, Randy Miller, Chris Cook, Donna Reichard, Sharon Starks, Jennifer Chappel, Shelley Hobbs, Matt Bader, Sherry Mizer and Justin Jarman.
An extra special thank-you to Paul Reder, Julie Ratcliffe and Jodi Sasse – you know what you did!
What a great start to 2014!

Executive Officer
It is hard to believe that my fourth Home and Garden Show has come and gone since I
began my role as Executive Officer. I cannot express enough gratitude I have for the
great team that works so hard behind the scenes to make the event so successful. I also
enjoy meeting new exhibitors and seeing those that return every year. It is almost like a
family reunion! Hats off to the whole Home and Garden Show committee, volunteers
and Rob Wright as Chairman.
I also want to say thank you to ALL HBA committee and council volunteers from Associates Council to Membership, Parade of Homes, Remodelers and yes, even By-Laws. This
association has strong, caring leadership within it’s Board of Directors. Please consider
running for a board seat at some point, as you will really see how this amazing group
continues to keep our association healthy.
I am looking forward to more successful events throughout the year and the first is our
Spring Parade of Homes with 21 entries!
Happy Spring!
Jodi

Community!
The City of Midland is partnering with the Midland Area Community Foundation to renovation the Fun Zone. Originally
built in 1994 led by a group of community volunteers, the Fun Zone will get a facelift that includes replacing all the
wooden decking and handrails with composite lumber, installing a perimeter fence, refurbishing some existing play
pieces, constructing several new play pieces including some universally accessible pieces, replacing all the metal
slides, adding benches and installing a shade sail. The renovation will take place June 4 – June 8 , and we are in
need of both skilled and unskilled volunteers to help out! The project will run from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. each day, with
shifts split into 4 hour blocks but we would welcome you to stay as long as you like. Food and beverages will be provided for all volunteers. In addition to volunteers, we are looking for financial support through our fundraising campaign, and we are seeking out donated building materials as well. Fundraising options include purchasing an engraved fence picket or sponsoring a playground feature.
If you have a real passion for the project and have the skills to go with it, we need experienced construction captains
who can be on site for the duration of the build. The captains will be the backbone of the volunteer work force, helping
to interpret the design plans, organizing the volunteers on their crew, and sharing their hands-on skills with the volunteers to ensure the work gets done correctly and on schedule.
Please visit the Midland Area Community Foundation website at www.midlandfoundation.org for more information on
volunteering your time or to make a donation to support the project!
