President’s Message: Cathleen Martelli
July and all that summer has to offer is here!
A time to celebrate our Declaration of Independence and all of the freedoms that come with
it. And to remember the sacrifices made throughout history to protect those freedoms.
Later this month, July 16-18, the Home Builders Association of Michigan will host the Summer
Board Convention in Traverse City. If any member is interested in attending, information regarding the itinerary may be found at: http://www.buildingmichigan.org/?page=Menu/Events
Our general membership meeting this month is the annual Golf Outing to be held at Sandy Ridge
Golf Course on July 23. It is a major fund raiser for the Associates Council and your support by
attending or sponsoring in some way would be greatly appreciated.
Travel safely; work safely.
Kindest Regards,
Cathleen Martelli, President

The fun zone renovation was a huge success; while
the overall project did not draw the volunteers
necessary to complete, 80% of the work was completed.
The hba of midland was well represented over the
five days from june 4th to june 8th. Please refer
to the list and if I missed anyone my apologies and
“thank you!”
as I stated in a previous newsletter, I was proud to
be a coordinator on the original build and this one
was just as rewarding. Seeing the community come
together for our children and grandchildren was a
beautiful sight. All working toward a common goal
in making the fun zone safe and up to date with new
components. It will be a landmark for many more
years to come.
Again a big thank you to all those who came out.
You should be proud of your commitment to the midland community.
Sincerely,
Mike kozuch

Governor Signs Law to Improve Career & Technical Education Opportunities
for Students
Many are starting to feel the impact of a labor shortage in our industry. This problem has no simple solution. However, an important long-term action has been set in motion by the Governor. Yesterday he signed legislation to create
greater flexibility for those high school students wanting to pursue construction and other technical learning opportunities while in high school. The HBA of Michigan has been lobbying for passage of this legislation for more than a year.
Currently, many students are unable to enroll in CTE programs because of limited scheduling and availability of courses that are necessary for graduation. The bill signed into law by the Governor will allow additional courses taught in a
CTE program to count toward State graduation requirements.
Many thanks go to Representative Ed McBroom and Representative Joel Johnson for being leaders on this important
legislation. Our work isn’t done on this issue. It is now on our industry to get into the schools and before students to
promote home building as a career option. We also need to work with the schools to encourage them to create a CTE
program if they don’t have one. There are bright students out there who have the potential to be the future of the
home building industry. It’s our job to invite them into our industry and show them the benefits of CTE programs.
If you have any questions about this new law contact Dawn Crandall at [email protected]. Please also know
that many local HBAs have begun to form task forces that are looking at worker shortage solutions for their markets.
