COUNCILLORS’ CORNER
COUNCILLOR CORNER & COMMUNITY PAGES
With Bishopsworth councillors
Richard Eddy & Kevin Quartley
NOW IT’S BACK TO ‘BUSINESSAS-USUAL’!
On Thursday 5th May 2016, we
had a crop of elections - for the
Police & Crime Commissioner, the
Bristol Mayor and, most important
to us, your two City Councillors,
representing Bishopsworth on
Bristol City Council.
Both Richard Eddy and myself
were thrilled and honoured to
be convincingly re-elected to
serve you and the community of
Bishopsworth - an area where we
both live and work. We want to
place on record our sincere thanks
for everyone who turned out to
vote (for whoever!) and assure
you, as before, we will faithfully
represent everyone, without fear
or favour, and irrespective of your
national political beliefs. If we can
help you, your family or residents’
group, please get in touch.
We also elected in early May a
new Mayor to serve all of Bristol:
Marvin Rees. Obviously, things are
at an early stage and Marvin has
only just established his Cabinet,
but early indications are positive
that his Administration may kickstart two projects which Richard
and I have been campaigning
for over many years: The longpromised Hartcliffe Way Recycling
Centre and the building of a new
rail station at Ashton Gate.
We are not under-estimating the
challenges of the coming years, but
hopefully some things will change
for the better!
Cllr Kevin Quartley
City Councillor, Bishopsworth Ward
SAD GOODBYE & GOODLUCK...
We wish Heather Williams all
the best as she sadly leaves
the post of Neighbourhood
Partnership Manager for pastures
new. Heather has worked hard
for Dundry View NP for the last
10 years and has been a great
support for Zion Community
Space since we first opened in
2011.
Goodluck Heather and thankyou from all of Dundry View!
To contact either Kevin or Richard email

on – Jessical has had a bit of a refurb of Zion
and she’s been putting on loads of hunky
dory events. I specially likes the Vinyl thing
she puts on on a Saturday, as I still loves me
old disc spinner.
I knows loads about music an all, which
always comes in handy during the musical
round up at the quiz night. (We still have to
sneak our sarnies in, mind).
That’s not the only ginormous talking point,
after months of build-up, loads of chats
with Ern over the Crosshands, adverts in the
papers, posters in windows all over Bemmy
Down and deep discourses on how they’ll
vote during the school run. Yep, Britain’s Got
Talent was back.
And what a show it was, mind. Screaming
gangs, silly dancing, bad singing, horrible
comments and people desperate for
attention. I loves it. Reminds me of me pomp
down town on a Saturday night, when me
and Mrs S used to strut our funky stuff down
Busby’s. Them was the days…

Ow bis? Tis I again, yer old
mucker, Albert Snitcher,
here to dispense me worldly
wisdom to you lovely
denizens of Bemmy Down
in this yer Zion brochure
outlining all the lush
happenings happening here.
And it is lush... All of a sudden, seems like
summer’s finally here. This is mint news as I’ve
been itching to try out me new sandals Mrs
S got us for Christmas. They look smart with
me white socks and me seventies shorts.
I looks quite the kiddie when I’m tanning
meself out the back.
When I was lapping up the sun the other
day, I did notice a little gap in the fence the
side where me young lady neighbour lives
(the one me mate Ern was telling me likes to
sunbathe topless). I didn’t know what to say,
or do, for a little bit, and was a bit flustered
but then I figured I might as well let her look
if she wants to.
It’s been a fast three months with loads going

ACHIEVING MORE AT MERCHANTS’ ACADEMY
Mike Foale, the first Briton to walk in
space, recently told students at Merchants’
Academy Bristol: “My parents didn’t really
think I could become an astronaut.” He
went on to explain how he proved his
mum and dad wrong by taking part in six
Space Shuttle missions, bringing alive the
academy’s vision that students can achieve
more than they ever thought possible.
Mike Foale, astronaut,
with Amy & George, Y8
Many students of all ages have been doing
just that, including three sixth-formers who are currently preparing for a visit to Japan to
participate in a Young Scientists Workshop.
Students in Merchants’ Academy Primary have been working closely with volunteers
from Computershare – through the business and education charity Ablaze - to improve
their reading and maths. They have also been working with the new Into University South
Bristol and Bristol’s One Tree Per Child initiative.
Merchants’ Academy, with the support of its sponsors, the Society of Merchant Venturers
and the University of Bristol, runs an unrivalled Co-Curricular programme to provide
students with opportunities in and beyond their lessons, such as Army Cadets, Duke of
Edinburgh Award and Future Brunels.
Music is another highlight at Merchants’ Academy, recently named School Music
Department of the Year in a national contest. Earlier this year the academy staged
Aladdin, its first all-age production and an enormous success.
The Merchants’ Academy
cast of Aladdin
Performance is one way
of building confidence;
opportunities to meet
and talk with people from
academic and industry
backgrounds is another.
These are elements
the
new
executive
principal of Merchants’
Academy Trust, Dr Hilary
Macaulay, is keen to
encourage.
Wide range of courses; newly refurbished Sixth Form Centre
equipped with the latest technology; excellent teaching
staff; and enthusiastic, motivated students. Choosing
Merchants’ Academy Sixth Form will ensure that you
achieve more than you ever thought possible.
