News October 2015
From Commodore Jim Murphy
Opening Day 2015-2016 Boating Season:
The weather gods did not shine down on KMYC for this
year’s Opening Day.
After studying the BOM’s synoptic chart all week and
with the forecast for Saturday having an 80% chance of
showers of between 5 -15 mm of rain was what greeted
the small Social Group who met at the Club early Friday
morning. Decisions, decisions – lawn or Clubhouse,
where/how were we going to fit 154 members and
guests in the Clubhouse? Do we hire a marquee? Do we
split some tables inside, some tables in the marquee?
Let us try and see how many round tables we can fit in.
Yes, we fitted them in and felt that the right decision was
made; despite Lyn Hunt advising that it does not rain at
Cottage Point on KMYC Opening Day. For the first time in
13 years the decision was made to hold the 2015-2016
KMYC Opening Day lunch indoors instead of on the
beautiful lawned area on the waterfront side of the
Clubhouse.
With table rearranging we were able to manage our
numbers on 15 tables but late Friday afternoon we were
still receiving emails and phone calls from invited guests.
On Saturday, even the name tag table at the entrance
was utilized after distribution of the printed name tags
to seat two visiting Flag Officers with their wives. A well
done to V.C. John Spry and Jenny Redston for once again
working with Cookbook Catering who did a splendid job
of preparing and distributing a delightful lunch to the 16
tables.
Past Commodore and Life Member, Ian Renton agreed
once more to be our Master of Ceremonies and his
contribution of his enviable style with the microphone is
always much appreciated by the members and visiting
guests. Vocal duo, Bronwyn Bishop and Past
Commodore,
Richard
Adamson
commenced
proceedings by leading the gathering in singing the National Anthem. Ian kept all entertained with his comedy
routines and jokes as well as introducing the various
speakers. Despite all the political upheaval in Canberra
during the week, Bronwyn made a short non-political
but inspiring speech.
KMYC– YOUR CLUB
Bronwyn is a very hard act to follow but I made a short
speech welcoming all for attending and extended a big
thank you to all the dedicated members and staff that
helped makes the day possible. I then introduced our
Guest Speaker, Mr Rob Brown OAM. Rob is considered
by his peers to be one of Australia’s best yachtsman. He
was one of the crew on board Australia II when she won
the America’s Cup in 1983. He was also crew on board
“Impetuous” as one of the Team of 3 Australian yachts
with “Ragamuffin” and “Police Car” who won the
disastrous Admirals Cup in 1979.
Interestingly, Rob’s speech hardly dealt with these past
victories as he compared the launching of ships with
Opening Days. It was also Rob’s first visit to KMYC and he
was very impressed with the facilities. John Spry
presented a lovely bunch of flowers to Bronwyn as well
as a gift from the Club to our Guest Speaker. Following
the presentations, Ian conducted the Raffle with the help
of Briar Jenson and Jan Harrington Johnson to distribute
the 16 items to the selected winners.
Following the official program, Rear Commodore Jim
Lendrum invited all to move to the waterfront
to be transported to their vessels and to prepare for the
sail past.
I would also like to mention that we had a few notable
absentees this year. Ian mentioned that Past
Commodore John Goddard and Pauline were on board
the Queen Victoria with Commodore of the Cunard fleet,
Christopher Rynd. Long term members may remember
Captain Rynd was a guest of the Club on our Opening
Day 2007 at the request of Ian and Bernice Renton who
had travelled on the inaugural Queen Mary cruise across
the Pacific. Also travelling around Italy was one of our
esteemed Opening Day barman and Director, Bill
Carmody and partner Jenny King. Also two long term
members of the Social group and very regular attendees
at Opening Days that were not able to join us this year
were Jan Adamson and Noel Shields. Hoping we see you
both on deck next year Jan and Noel.
The salute was taken from Past Commodores Phil Alchin
magnificent vessel “Morpheus”. Following a refusal from
Bronwyn on the offer of an umbrella, Phil being the
gentleman that he is, offered his cap to Bronwyn as
there was a light shower just as the first boats of the sail
past approached the saluting vessel.
In past years it has been traditional for Past Commodore
and Life member Alan Pears and Jenny to entertain the
Past Commodores on board their vessel “Jana” on
Opening Days. This tradition was broken this year as the
Past Commodores were shared aboard two vessels
“Sinabada” and “Kahuna.” It was interesting to see that
the older statesmen on board “Sinabada” were not
brave enough, unlike Bronwyn, to venture up to the bow
of the vessel during the light shower. Refer photo below.

Final item re Opening day that I will mention is that I
discovered later in the day that another member of
KMYC was also on board “Impetuous” during the 1979
Admirals Cup with our Guest Speaker and that these two
guys had grown up together. None other than Commodore of Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, 2014-2015 KMYC
Rally Champion and KMYC member, Richard Chapman.
Rob and Richard did a lot of catching up during the sail
past. Neither had a cap or hat to venture to the bow of
“Morpheus” and advised that they were both “fair
weather sailors” now.
Past Commodores much travelled pennant;
As well as being on a flag staff on the bow of
“Kahuna” on Opening day, the Past Commodores
pennant had been on a recent 35 day Sydney to
Sydney Pacific cruise on board the “Sun Princess” with
Ian and Bernice Renton. Ian advised, what a great way to
escape winter, with calm waters all the way, warm and
sunny with only 1 day when it rained early in the
morning. We went to Suva, Samoa, Hawaii (5 islands),
American Samoa, Papeete, Bora Bora, Moorea and
Noumea. The P.C. Pennant came out on many occasions
and created many questions and discussions with a lot of
the 2000 passengers on board.

RALLY NEWS
PATONGA PUB RALLY Wed
19th August 2015
The Mid Week Rally turned out to be a great success
with 5 boats taking part. Not everyone chose to
compete in the rally themselves. Some observed
rallying tactics by going across on boats who were
competing and some just went for the relaxing cruise.
All boats left KMYC around 11:00am to make their
way to Patonga Pub for an excellent lunch and tactical debrief. Many thanks to Gary Sexton and John
Colquhoun for providing the tender service to and
from the boats at Patonga. All 15 of us had a dry trip
to the wharf.
RESULTS:
I had a few anxious moments trying to download the
GPS plotters at Patonga only to find that the battery
in the computer was low and giving unreliable readings. However the results were worked out successfully in the end and are as follows:
1st Russell Tyler, Russell Erskine, Jenny R and
John Spry with a loss of 528.4 points.
nd
2
Bruce Quick and a crew of many with a loss of
722.5 points
rd
3 Alan Judge, Alan & Jennie Pears with a loss of
935.3 points
4th Kerry Trollope and Charles with a loss of
2084.5 points
Keep a watch on your e-mail system for the next
Mid-Week Rally. It was really a great day for
competitors, spectators and those who just wanted a
lunch out.
Cheers
Alan Judge
Stop Press New addition to the Wilson family at the Kiosk:
Angela and Trent welcomed a baby girl, Sia
Wilson to the world late last week.
Sia arrived a few weeks early and the baby and
Angela are both doing well in Mona Vale
hospital.
Visit the kiosk for a coffee with Trent and I am
sure he will show you his photos of their little
bundle of joy.
