HELP YOUR LITTLE ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN SCHOOL!
With school starting back up this fall, many Bigs are wondering how
they can be more supportive of their Little’s academic performance (without
becoming a tutor). Know that the mentor’s main role in supporting academic
success is to build a supportive, friendly relationship with the Little. A mentor
should focus on the needs and feelings of the child in contrast to what
someone thinks needs to be “fixed”.
Get them involved in decision-making about the activities you do while
you are together. Make sure the activity you work on is youth-driven and
positive. Relationship building should come first. Get to know your Little
without “prying”, by simply engaging them in conversation and getting them
involved in an activity.
Be consistent. Consistency will show your Little that you care about
them. Remember, you are friends! In time they will grow to trust you and
care about you, too. They need to know they can count on you for your
support. Tell them about the potential you see in them.
Make learning fun. Do this by helping your Little connect what
they are learning in school to the real world. Example: while playing a
game or reading a book, if a spelling word comes up bring that to their
attention. If they are learning about multiplication, see if you can
provide an example.
Lead by example. If you are positive they will be positive.
Going back to school is sometimes hard for a Little. Summer was fun
and getting back into the swing of school and rules may be a difficult
adjustment. If we show enthusiasm it may just set the spark your
Little needs to succeed.
Support the school. BBBS works very closely with our participating
schools. Working with teachers, counselors and principals to help a child
succeed is what Big Brothers Big Sisters is all about. Find out from their teacher
what the class is learning about, then find ways to support that when you meet
with your Little.
Be you—be a friend. Most important...just be you. Be a good friend to
your Little and establish a strong bond and mutual enjoyment of your time
together. Have fun!

RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE: BRIANNE
Brianne is a 4th grader in Mercer County. Brianne and her Big, Julie
Losey, have been matched for almost a year and a half. This past
March, matches were given the opportunity to play Bingo with
residents at Riverview Manor in Bettendorf. After this experience,
Brianne and Julie were inspired to continue their work with
others. Brianne chose to read to preschoolers at Head Start in
Aledo. This provided her the opportunity to give back to
children just like Julie gives back to her. She read aloud
The Very Hungry Caterpillar to a group of very excited Head
Start students. Brianne enjoyed both experiences and loves
helping others.
Way to go Brianne, keep up the great work!
DEAR MATCH COACH: BACK TO SCHOOL WITH MY LITTLE
“School is just around the corner. What should I do as a Big to
re-engage my Little when our School-based visits resume?”
We hope our Bigs in the School-Based and School-Based Plus pro
grams are looking forward to resuming visits with their Littles! We
at BBBS are excited to kick-off the school year as well. BBBS staff conducts
meetings with each school during the first two weeks of the school year.
After that, you will hear from your Match Coach with updated information
about your Little such as their teacher’s name, their lunch time and if
needed, their new school. Please wait to hear from your Match Coach
before beginning visits for the year.
To start the new year strong we highly encourage finding some
time to meet with your Little’s teacher. Establishing a relationship with your
Little’s teacher is just one of many great ways to support your Little.
To prepare for your first visit, you can also think of questions to
ask your Little about their summer and their expectations and goals for this
school year. This is a great time to change your routine and/or set new
patterns. Do more of what you liked last year and less of what you didn’t.
Lastly, If you and your Little ever find it hard to come up with something to
do when you meet, most of our schools receive activity boxes filled with
fun activities, games and crafts to do. Your match should never be without
something fun to do this school year!
As the end of summer vacation approaches BBBS wishes you and
your Little a wonderful school year!

HEALTHY KIDS—SUN SAFETY

With 23 percent of sun
exposure occurring
before the age of 18,
protecting your child's
skin now will help keep
them healthy in the
future. The sun is at its
peak during the hours
of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If it
is possible, a child
should avoid or limit their sun exposure during these times. When a
child is playing outside, he or she should wear protective clothing and
sunglasses that have 100 percent UV protection.
Don't Let an Overcast Cloud Your Judgment
There are many myths about sun safety, so don't let this one get the
best of you. Even if it is cloudy outside, sunscreen is a must. As much
as 80 percent of the UV rays from the sun are able to pass through
clouds. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that
sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 should be worn when a child
goes outside. Even if your child doesn't burn easily, they should
always be wearing sunscreen when they are outside.
"Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least
15-30. Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun.
Enjoying the sun and outdoors is very important for children, but always remember sun safety and accident prevention!" advises
Kimberly Frees, DNP, at UnityPoint Clinic.

Quick Sun Safety Tips:

It’s Not Too Soon to Think About Back to School!
We know summer vacation only recently began, but at UnityPoint
Clinic, we’re already preparing to help your students start next year
on a healthy note. There are two types of physical exams your child
might need, and UnityPoint Clinic provides both of them:
School physicals include a full child exam, and also address
vaccinations the student may need. A student’s parent or guardian
should make an appointment for a school physical with the child’s
primary care provider.
Sports physicals clear a student to participate in athletics, and are
less involved than a school physical. We recommend making an
appointment with your child’s primary care provider for sports

Know what you’re buying.
Read the labels. Whether it’s a
new shirt or a new iPod,
make sure you have
everything you need.
Nothing’s worse than
finding something you love
and it gets ruined or you
don’t have what you need
to use it. It could cost even
more to replace it or to buy
more stuff to make it work.
It’s just a sale. Do you need it? No, not really. Don’t waste
money on things you don’t really
need or want just because they’re on
sale.
Entertainment
Go to matinees. The tickets are
always cheaper.
Don't spend all your money on drinks
and popcorn. Without too much
trouble, you can spend more on
snacks than on the price of
admission. Eat before you go to the
movie, buy a beverage during the
movie, and then catch a pizza or a
burger afterwards. You'll at least be
getting more food for your money.
Look for the REAL deal.
Go big or go small. Just because it’s bigger, doesn’t mean
you’re getting more for your money. The same thing goes
for smaller items. Just because it’s smaller, doesn’t mean
it’s cheaper. Make sure you’re comparing prices and sizes.
Electronics, sports gear and big-ticket stuff
Be a smart consumer. Looking for new headphones? Go online
and read product reviews. You can learn about brands,
models, features and prices before you visit a store.
But it costs more. Even though it may cost more up front, it
could be the better deal. If it lasts longer than the cheaper
item, it may be worth the extra money.
Get all this information before you buy. This helps you find the
right headphones for your needs. Collecting information
makes you a smart shopper – and can save you money!

CRAFT ACTIVITIES—BIRD FEEDERS AND HOUSES
MILK CARTON BIRD HOUSES OR BIRD FEEDER
Supplies Needed:
1 large milk carton, cleaned
Scissors
Hole punch
Acrylic Paint and Acrylic Varnish Spray
Paintbrush
Craft sticks, Twigs, Buttons
Glue
Dowel rod
Birdseed
Twine
Directions for Bird House or Bird Feeder:
Cut one door-shaped opening in your milk carton. Poke a hole under the opening for your dowel rod. Slide the dowel rod in the hole you
created. Glue craft sticks to the top of the carton for roof shingles. Fill the bottom of the carton with birdseed. You can purchase birdseed
from your local garden store or make your own from scratch. Combine nuts and seeds such as yellow corn, sunflower seeds and raisins for
homemade birdseed that your flying friends will enjoy. Once you have filled your bird feeder, decorate your birdhouse with Popsicle sticks,
buttons, twigs and paint.

1 large milk carton, cleaned

Acrylic paint and Acrylic Varnish Spray

Glue (white all purpose, glue sticks and glue gun)
Supplies Needed for Fairy:
Scissors
Black and red markers
Felt pieces
Fabric flower pieces
Pipe Clearners
Small Flowers
Ribbon
Large wooden bead
Yarn
Directions for Fairy House:
Cut out both a door and windows for your fairy house. Use a hot glue gun to attach leaves, twigs and Popsicle Sticks to the top of the milk
carton. Use glue to add little stones, twigs or other material to the sides of the house. Work on one side at a time and let dry completely
before decorating.
Directions for Fairy Doll:
Use a pipe cleaner to create a body for your fairy doll. Slide a wooden bead down the body of the fairy to create a head. Cut yarn at your
desired length to create hair for your fairy doll. Use another piper cleaner for arms. Design and create a blouse for your fairy using different
pieces of felt. Use flower pieces to craft a beautiful skirt. Add a crown constructed out of felt and use markers to draw her eyes, mouth and
nose. Lastly, glue two leaves to her back for wings. Give her a name and she is now ready to move into her fairy house!

BIG SUMMER AT MACOMB OFFICE
NEW FACE IN THE OFFICE
We have a new face in the office: Chandler Horrell
will be working for us for the next year. Chandler is
an AmeriCorps volunteer (not an intern). She will be
involved in everything that the office does. As you
will all regularly interact with her, we have asked her
to introduce herself. Have a look, and join me in
welcoming Chandler to our team!
Hi, all! My name is Chandler Horrell and I will be
serving with Big Brothers Big Sisters as an
AmeriCorps VISTA member. I graduated from Western Illinois
University this past May with a degree in Social Work. Being from
Macomb, I am very excited to work within the community! I look
forward to talking with you all and helping with the success of this
already amazing program!
NEW MATCH!
WE MADE A NEW MATCH! Little Sister Alyssa is new
to BBBS (though her sister, Skylar, has been in a
year-long match). Big Sister Chandler is also in her
very first match (and is now an employee here at
the Macomb office). This is a match that we have
wanted to make for a long time, and the stars finally aligned. They hit it off at their first meeting, all
hugs and smiles! Both Chandler and Alyssa are full
of energy and positive attitude, and this is an outstanding match. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
SUMMER MATCH ACTIVITY
Our favorite summer match activity is
when we go to see the Burlington
Bees play, and that day was this day!
We got super lucky with the weather,
AND THE BEES WON!!! The Bees gave us
40 free tickets, again, and they were all
used. The Bees made us feel special, like
they always do: Little Sister Anika got to
throw out the first pitch. Some of our
Littles got to play the between-innings
games, some of us won free stuff, and
everyone got to meet players and get
autographs after the game. BBBS loves
the Bees! Right after the game, good
friend of the program Ric Cortés took us
all to his Jimmy John's restaurant for free
subs! 40 BBBS team members turned out for the game, Bees win, and
free dinner afterward...what an awesome day!
SUMMER LUNCHES
In 2015 we coordinated a summer weekend backpack lunch program
and it was a great success. We helped get nutritious lunches to a good
number of local kids through multiple partnerships and many very

generous sponsors and volunteers. This year we are reaching more
than twice as many! Again, so many wonderful people have stepped
up to assist. We’ve
had 3 more lunchmakers since the
last issue, and

Counseling Center Jim DiTulio donated, delivered, and
set up a basketball hoop for

For the second year in a row, The Mississippi
Rat Pak Car Club made a VERY generous
donation to our program! Nice guys, paid our
organization many compliments, happy to contribute to the good
work we do every day. BIG thanks!!!
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
Former director of the Housing Authority of
McDonough County Bill Jacobs retired in
December 2015. Bill was one of the people
who brought Big Brothers Big Sisters to
Macomb 16 years ago, and he has been a
board member ever since. To commemorate
Bill's service to our community and BBBS we
established the Bill Jacobs Service Award for
BBBS kids that do community service.
Here are the first winners: Little Sister Anika
(for helping with summer weekend lunches) and Little Brother Daveion
(for helping with Wesley's Streaming Waters week). Congratulations!

WHITESIDE COUNTY UPDATE—AUGUST

This is a fundraiser for the people that protect and serve you! The
Dixon's Fire & Police Department is hosting a fundraiser, Saturday,
August 6th from 6-11 p.m. in front of the Public Works building on
2nd Street. There will be grilling, music by Snap Shot and family fun!
The admission is FREE. Bring a folding chair to come enjoy music and
support your local heroes. Benefits go towards health and fitness
equipment for Dixon's First Responders.
Aug 9th – Movies at the Grandon Civic Center- Admission is free.
Movies start at dusk. The Good Dinosaur showing at the Grandon
Civic Center. Come early for fun family activities before the movie.

Robert and Kristin
Robert and Kristin have been in a School-Based
match for 3 years, but recently transitioned into
a School-Based Plus match so that they can go to
some of the BBBS hosted match activities.
Robert and Kristin were able to attend the
Christmas Party last December and had so much
fun, which is what prompted the transition.

Aug 6 - Rock Falls Optimist Club Touch A Truck - 10 am at 201 Ave A
in Rock Falls. The Optimist Club of Rock Falls Illinois is a community
organization dedicated to serving our community as a Friend of
Youth. We are planning our 6th annual Touch a Truck event on
Saturday, August 6. Touch a Truck's mission is to allow kids of all ages
to Look. Touch. Learn. This event has been a major attraction in our
community for the last few years attracting national attractions
including stars of American Pickers and the Pink Heals Fire Trucks.
This event is free to anyone who attends. Over 75 attractions will be
