“Helping People Live
Better Lives”
It’s carved in stone in front of Amway’s World
Headquarters in Ada, Michigan.
Amway’s founders – our fathers, Rich DeVos
and Jay Van Andel – shared a passion for
helping people live better lives and a deeply
felt responsibility for making the world a better
place. That philosophy is foundational to
the Amway™ business opportunity. It provides
focus for a business – our business and
yours – that believes people are its greatest
resource and helping them achieve their goals,
their dreams, their aspirations is critical to our
mutual success.
That philosophy is also the driver behind
the unmatched philanthropic activity of the
company and Amway Independent Business
Owners from the company’s earliest days.
You’ve taken that value to heart and acted on
it to make the world a better place. Together
we’ve contributed more than $400 million
to causes globally and throughout North
America. This year as we prepare to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of our Amway ONE BY
®
ONE Campaign for Children and the global
impact it has helped to shape – more than
10 million children have benefitted from our
mutual contributions of time and monies – we
want to say “thank you” for all you do. We
couldn’t be more proud of the way you help
people live better lives, every day.

Wonbo Shim, Ph.D. & Jungah (Joyce) Han
Crown Ambassador / California
Wonbo Shim and Jungah Han have always believed
the key to success in any endeavor, especially the
Amway™ business, is knowledge. It was a lesson
they heard repeatedly from their mentors, Amway
Founders Council members Leonard and Esther Kim.
“They would say to us, ‘Do your homework. Learn
the Independent Business Ownership Plan and learn
the products before you share either with anyone,’”
recalls Wonbo.
The two did exactly as they were told and have been
giving the same advice to others since they began
their business in 2005.

Given their meteoric rise to Crown Ambassador and
Founders Council (they’ve hit a new pin level every
year), it’s clear that their strategy works. “We realized
when we hit Diamond that it wasn’t the end, it was
just the beginning,” states Wonbo.
As with many IBOs, the couple’s journey to
independence started because they were looking
for a more secure future. At the time, Wonbo was
an engineer and Joyce a stay-at-home mom. They
were enjoying living in Oklahoma when the dot-com
bubble burst and the company Wonbo was working for
downsized. The facility where he worked closed and
he was transferred to Minnesota. “Getting relocated
was shocking to me,” says Wonbo. “I realized my life
depended on this company. That’s when I knew I
wanted to be my own boss.”
Wonbo Shim & Joyce Han
Amway made sense
He had looked at other opportunities, including starting
his own engineering firm. But the more he thought
about the Amway business, the more sense it made.
“There was no risk, it didn’t require a large investment,
and it would bring a high return if we did it right,”
explains Wonbo. “I thought, ‘This is it! This is what I’ve
been looking for.’”
As Joyce remembers, “I had no experience doing
anything like this.” But she had faith – in Wonbo; in their
mentors, Leonard and Esther Kim; in Amway; and in
the products. “So we made our business a priority,”
she says, adding that with three young daughters,
managing their time was sometimes tricky. But as
Wonbo shares, “It’s a tradeoff – giving up activities
like watching TV at night and playing golf on weekends
was well worth the possibility of a brighter future in the
long run.”
Joyce worked the business during the day, when the
girls were in school, while Wonbo devoted his nights
and weekends.
Within a few short years, Wonbo was able to leave
traditional work behind. And, as he says, quitting his job
in 2011 was one of the most satisfying things he has
ever done.
It was a momentous year for them in other ways, too.
Their daughter, Sandra, started college and the family
relocated to California, where there is a large Korean
population. They quickly established a strong network
within the community and found that many others were
eager to follow in their footsteps.
“Esther Kim always told us to keep striving for higher
pins, because that shows other people proof that it can
be done. They can see that this business really works,”
says Wonbo. “So that’s what we did.”
Importance of education
The couple made good use of the training materials
available to them through Amway, taking full advantage
of bilingual materials and programs such as Instructor
Led Training. “As with any occupation, you have to
understand your business and remember that you’re in
it to earn money. Without knowledge, there will be no
income,” observes Wonbo.

Wonbo Shim & Joyce Han
Joyce wasn’t exactly “sleeping” all those years.
She’s an accomplished violinist who says her
musical background gave her many skills she
uses in the business, from patience and discipline
to creating harmony and unison among many
different talents.
They emphasize the importance of reading books,
especially those by Amway founders Rich DeVos
and Jay Van Andel, to understand the company’s
values and basics of the business. “I think it’s
important to know their ideas about helping people
live better lives and to be aligned with them,” says
Wonbo, who recommends starting with Rich’s
“Compassionate Capitalism.”
They’ve also created their own educational programs
to share product knowledge. “We always talk about the
connectedness of the Amway™ products,” says Joyce.
“For example, when we are talking about ARTISTRY®
skincare and makeup, we also talk about having healthy
hair and nails, and the importance of good nutrition,
tying it to NUTRILITE® products as well.”
10 Steps to
Success
Making connections
But it’s in their kitchen where they really connect the
dots. Because many of their leaders are women who
enjoy cooking and entertaining, Wonbo and Joyce
hold cooking classes using iCook® pots and pans.
“We share food and we share the business model,”
says Wonbo, who admits he’s more of a helper
(i.e., dishwasher) when it comes to food prep.
Indeed, Joyce is a real pro at cooking and presenting,
and she ties the two together quite naturally. “Cooking
opens the door to talking about so many other
products,” she says. “DISH DROPS® for cleaning up;
eSpring®, which gives us such good water to start with;
the ATMOSPHERE® air purifier to remove lingering
odors; NUTRILITE Protein Powder that you can add
to meals such as pancakes and waffles to make them
healthier; or on-the-go vegetable drinks.”
“My wife is very smart about making all those
connections and so are the ladies she mentors,” states
Wonbo. “She often talks about ‘awakening the sleeping
giant within you.’ That’s basically what happened to her:
Before, she never thought of dreams and goals.”
Here’s what Wonbo and Joyce
consider to be the top 10 steps to
succeed in any Amway business:
3. Use the products

5. Build retail clients.
Their recommendation is
to build customers and
provide them with excellent
support, which will lead them
to eventually become IBOs.
(Retail volume of 50+ PV
from qualified sales to clients,
or 10 orders with unique
registered customer numbers
who have qualified activity
per month, is required by
Amway to receive a bonus
on downline IBO volume.)
Setting examples
Both Joyce and Wonbo are excellent leaders who
would never ask anyone in their organization to do
anything that they haven’t done first. “As leaders, we
must always set the example,” states Wonbo. He adds,
“Even though I’m a leader in our organization, it’s not an
employer/employee relationship. I’m nobody’s ‘boss.’
We work in parallel together; we’re a team.”
As a result, they’ve developed many strong and lasting
friendships throughout their organization, something
they both treasure. “It’s based on mutual respect,” says
Wonbo, adding that fun is also a primary ingredient in their
organization. “The Kims named our team the Bravo Family,
which means good, exciting, and fun,” he exclaims. “It may
not be easy, but it is a lot of fun – full of positive people who
enjoy helping others grow financially and personally.”
Building volume
As for growing a business, Wonbo and Joyce recommend
building volume. Their advice is to be proactive about
promotions, especially for new products. Leaders get advance
notice on new product launches, and Wonbo says they always
act quickly when they do. “We’ll get the products and try them if
we can, or at least talk with our organization about them so when
it’s time to start taking orders, people are excited and can’t wait.”
“And often, with new products, it’s just a matter of changing
brands,” he continues. “For example, before Creme LuXury came
out, people were buying similar products by other premium brands.
Once we had that product, IBOs could buy from their own brands,
and that all helps increase volume, without any additional spending.”
6. Show the plan.
If you want your business to grow,
show the plan a minimum of one
to two times per week.
7. Counsel with your active
upline on a regular basis.
Stay plugged in.
8. Be accountable.
Always be accountable to others
and people around you will do
the same.
9. E-Communicate.
Communicate online with active
business leaders to share
business ideas and product
information.
10. Exercise!
You need to set a good example
for health products.
“We stress the importance
of friendship, and the
relationships we have
built contribute to the
high renewal rate in
our organization.”

He says it was the same thing when BODYKEY by
NUTRILITE™ weight management products were
introduced. “Leaders must be quick to take advantage
of these opportunities and be watching for them.”
Staying on top
Wonbo and Joyce feel it’s important to keep up on
trends so they know what’s going on in their industry,
and what people are buying or wishing they could
buy. They also travel the world meeting with leaders
from other countries to learn their secrets of success.
Again, it’s all part of being informed – reading, listening,
and educating themselves about things that impact
their business.
Second generation
They’re pleased that their 20-year-old daughter,
Sandra, has already become an IBO and is excited
about carrying on the family business. “She even
made a speech at a second-generation meeting in
Korea,” says Wonbo proudly. “She’s been translating
for my wife ever since she was a little girl, so she
understands this business as well as we do!”
In fact, the whole family, including younger daughters,
Catherine, 17, and Kristin, 14, were thrilled to meet
the very first second-generation family in the Amway
business: Karen Hansen, daughter of Bernice Hansen,
who was among the pioneers of the business in the
early 1960s. “We also had the honor of meeting Rich
DeVos last summer, and when we did, my wife knelt
down at his feet and said, ‘Thank you so much for
starting this business!’ We were so moved we almost
burst into tears,” says Wonbo.
Yes, they are very grateful for the lives they enjoy
today. “When I run into my old engineering friends,
many tell me I look younger than I did when they knew
me,” says Wonbo, crediting his healthy lifestyle and
overall happiness as factors. “If I had continued as
an engineer, I don’t know what our lives would be like
now,” he continues. “Probably nothing exciting would
be going on, just the same old thing day in and day out,
growing older without an exciting future ahead of us like
we have today. I am just thankful every day that I met
Leonard Kim in 2005 and realized what a great mentor
he was – and that I should follow him.”
vOLUNTEER
WORK, TOO
As busy as they are with their business, Wonbo
and Joyce are committed to being involved with
causes they believe in. For several years they
have been U.S. delegates for the Worldwide
Dreambuilders Charity for Children (WWCC), a
nonprofit organization Leonard and Esther Kim
founded in 2009 in Korea. Charity for Children
works closely with UNICEF; in fact, it has been
recognized by that highly esteemed organization
for the funds they’ve raised – more than $1 million
since it started.
Last fall, the Kims and Wonbo visited the
UNICEF offices in New York and were
thoroughly impressed with how far-reaching
the organization’s work is. “They monitor the
world and know what’s going on everywhere,
what the needs are, and who’s doing what, so
it’s a great organization to be affiliated with.
Especially with their focus on children, which
aligns so well with Amway’s ONE BY ONE®
Campaign for Children and our own efforts to
help underprivileged children,” says Wonbo.
Charity for Children’s goal is to have 10,000 IBOs
each donate $10 from their bonus checks to
raise funds that will be used to build schools and
libraries, or purchase supplies for orphanages.
The average monthly Gross Income for “active” IBOs in the U.S. was $202.
Approximately 46% of all IBOs in the U.S. were “active.” IBOs were considered “active” in
months in 2010 when they attempted to make a retail sale, or presented the Amway IBO
Compensation Plan, or received bonus money, or attended an Amway or IBO meeting. If
someone sustained that level of activity every month for a whole year, their annualized
Gross Income would be $2,424. Of course, not every IBO chooses to be active every month.
PAGE 6
Achieve
“Gross Income” means the amount received from retail sales, minus the cost of goods
sold, plus monthly bonuses and cash incentives. It excludes all annual bonuses and
cash incentives, and all non-cash awards, which may be significant. There may also be
significant business expenses, mostly discretionary, that may be greater in relation to
income in the first years of operation.

Marines
Rich & Lisa Mahoney / Utah
“When you do things
as a team, you can do
a lot more than you
can as a lone ranger.”
Patrick Mahoney joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2011.
Ever since, his parents, Amway Independent Business
Owners Rich and Lisa Mahoney, have made the U.S.
Marine Corps League and Auxiliary an integral part
of their lives. They work in conjunction with veterans
and other military families to show their appreciation
for those who have served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
They have raised funds for Wounded Warriors, hosted
birthday parties at a veterans hospital, helped with
the annual Toys for Tots® donations, and sent care
packages to deployed Marines.
Beyond Marines
And it doesn’t stop with the Marines. “If we don’t have
names of Marines, then we support extended family
members in other branches of service,” says Lisa.
“League and Auxiliary members are also supportive of
each other as medical or financial challenges occur in
their lives.”
Lisa says that she is grateful for the support of U.S.
Marine veterans who may better understand and relate
to Patrick and his experiences. “When our son returns,
I’ve got a whole list of guys who can help him in a way I
can’t,” she explains. “I don’t think I’ve ever met a more
patriotic group of people.”

Kirk Larson / Minnesota
Elected chairman of the all-volunteer Minnesota
Veterans Home (MVH) Family Council in 2008, IBO
Kirk Larson is passionate about supporting veterans
and their families. Kirk has worked to establish the
council as a nonprofit and boost participation from 6
to 40 members.
Part of the council’s mission is to get family members
of veterans living at the MVH more involved. “We want
family members to realize that they don’t have to be
afraid to visit their loved one at the Home. We’re there
for the families, to help make this part of their life a
little easier and create new memories,” says Kirk,
whose father was a World War II veteran and once
resided at MVH.
Making visits fun
To encourage family visitations, the council
organizes fun events for them to enjoy throughout the
year, such as Vettes for Vets, an end-of-the-summer
potluck picnic, featuring 70 Corvettes, boat rides
on the Mississippi River, and a picture day for
families and MVH residents to have their photos
professionally taken.
Thanks in large part to Kirk’s efforts, the MVH now
enjoys a positive national reputation. “You have to
put others first,” he observes. “Ask yourself, ‘What
am I here for? Am I here to make someone else’s
life easier?’”

Keeping
families
strong
Dawn Buhain / Minnesota
Beyond the Yellow Ribbon South of the River (BTYR
SOTR) began in 2010 as a seven-member military
support ministry. Today, it is a busy nonprofit made up
of 150 veterans and active service members. Chaired by
Amway Independent Business Owner Dawn Buhain, the
group’s mission is to support military veterans, active
service members and their families.
“This is the least we can do
for vets as far as I’m concerned.
Helping them is our way of
saying ‘thanks.’”
– Dawn Buhain
Dawn is all too familiar with the struggles military
families face: Her husband Joe served as a combat
medic in Iraq and Afghanistan. “When Joe was
deployed, everyone at Amway was so wonderful and
supportive. They were like family to us,” she shares.
“We don’t want people to feel alone when their loved
ones are serving overseas.”
Helping smooth transition back home
Returning military personnel often have difficulty
transitioning back home. Dawn asks, “If they don’t go to
the VA, where will they go? We’re hoping to be the people
they come to.”
Some of the work they’ve done so far includes:
• Partnering with a home improvement store to build
homes for veterans
• Connecting service members to jobs and assistance
with writing résumés
• Increasing awareness about the mental health
issues, such as PTSD, that afflict a staggering
number of veterans
“We want to serve everybody we can, but the hardest part
is finding them – some people don’t know what they need
when they’re stressed.”
In 2012, BYTR SOTR was presented with a Star of the
North Congressional Award, given to those who have
demonstrated selfless acts of kindness and generosity.

Joel & Ardith Griffing / Florida
Amway IBOs Joel and Ardith Griffing believe in the power of family. Both grew up in
strong, supportive families and, in 2001, the Griffings founded The Hope Collection (THC),
a nonprofit organization that provides support and encouragement to individuals, especially
military veterans and their families.
For example, a few years ago, THC started Hope’s Homes to provide intergenerational
continuous care communities (ICCCs) for military veterans as well as first responders,
firefighters, police officers, senior citizens, and their extended families.
“We want to build a cycle of appreciation that will keep
families strong as the core building block of our society.”
– Joel Griffing
Stabilizing support services
The ICCC plan includes mentor relationships, support services, and small business opportunities.
“ICCC gives veterans the chance to stay with their families and stabilize as they transition back into
civilian life,” says Joel. “Almost every military veteran is mission driven and when they arrive home,
they sometimes have trouble figuring out their next mission – we help them find a mission.”
The Hope Collection also provides veterans with $1,000 worth of coupons for a variety of
goods and services, to soften the financial transition to civilian life. “We partnered with a national
couponing company and, in just four months, we gave away almost $2 million in coupons,”
notes Joel.
THC collaborates daily with government agencies to help provide a smooth transition for military
veterans returning from overseas. “We like to ask people, ‘How many doors can you open in
a day?’” says Joel. “There’s no pitch, no catch. We’re all about paying it forward by helping
people help others.”

T ha n k s f or the
freedom!
Jessica Witty / Ontario, Canada
Canadian Independent Business Owner Jessica Witty
loves her country and all the freedom it represents. As
the leader of daughter Katarina’s group in Girl Guides of
Canada (similar to the Girl Scouts in the U.S.), she came
up with a great way for the girls, who are all 5 or 6 years
old, to earn their “The World Around Me” badges.
“The badge requires the girls to explore their country
and its place in the world,” explains Jessica. “It’s my
belief that freedom is earned by those that serve our
country and it’s thanks to these brave men and women,
many of whom died for us, that we’re able to live the
way we do.
“I then told the girls that they were also going to have a
chance to thank those who continue to protect us and
to help other countries be free,” says Jessica.
“I think it’s important to honor
the men and women who
make it possible for us to live
in a free country.”
– Jessica Witty
Her idea (which required prior approval from Amway)
was to give the girls the opportunity to thank those
who continue to protect us by selling Ribbon Variety
Gift Cards as a fundraiser for their troop. The cards
would be given away to the soldiers and their families
living on a nearby military base. The troop would
receive donations worth 15% of the before-tax price
of the card.
The girls sold the cards themselves, and each buyer
received a yellow ribbon and a sticker on which they
could write a personal message. The cards were
distributed just before last Christmas at the base and
were a big hit.
“The girls were so excited and the parents have given
us great feedback, too. I know Katarina had a lot
of fun with it and I also feel good that it gave us the
opportunity to educate our youth about those who
have given so much so that we all live in a free country,”
Jessica states.

Bill Carlson / North Carolina
IBO Bill Carlson served in the U.S. Air Force for nearly
eight years. He met Tony, a National Guard master
sergeant with more than 36 years of service under his
belt, while Bill was raising awareness and funding for
Support U.S. Armed Forces (SUSAF), an organization
that provides support for military personnel and their
families. And it was when Bill heard Tony’s story that he
knew he had to do something more to help.
In 2011, Tony suffered a serious neck injury during a
training exercise while deployed in Afghanistan. When
he returned to the U. S., he was diagnosed with ALS, a
debilitating disease that affects the nerves in the brain
and spinal cord.
Tony had been an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt
and fish, but his physical limitations now made those
activities almost impossible. After meeting Tony that
day, Bill, along with others, was inspired to give Tony an
experience he’d never forget – a guided hunt at Mellon
Creek Outfitters (MCO), a 110,000-acre ranch in Texas.
MCO donated the hunt, while Bill secured funding for
the family’s travel. At the ranch, the guides went all out
to make the experience a memorable one for Tony.
it was also one of the most gratifying things he’s ever
done. “I keep in touch with the family and they tell me
that Tony talks about that hunt every day.”
Since then, Bill has arranged hunts at the ranch with
other veterans who have received a Purple Heart or
above – hunts that MCO also generously provided free
of charge. “It was a most humbling gift for them to give.
Those hunts cost thousands,” notes Bill. “My dad used
to tell me that one person can make a difference and
I’ve found this to be very true.”
“While I was getting Tony’s hunting
license, a man overheard me telling
his story. He pulled out $350 and
said, ‘Please give this to the soldier.
We don’t do enough for our military.’”
– Bill Carlson
Bagging a big boar
Most amazing of all is that with the use of only his right
arm, Tony brought in an 8-point buck, a doe, and a
238-pound wild boar, the largest hog ever harvested
at MCO! For Tony, it was the thrill of a lifetime. For Bill,

And
Giles Ouellette / Maine
Amway Independent Business Owner Giles Ouellette
has been on the Easter Seals board in Maine since
2011, so he knows the wonderful work that organization
does. But a desperate phone call led to an experience
that opened his eyes – and his heart – more than he
could ever have imagined.
“I was working with another IBO, Carlene, whose
husband Brian had injured his knee in a National Guard
training exercise while preparing for deployment,”
recalls Giles.
Because of the injury, Brian was unable to work.
Although the military provided financial assistance, it
was abruptly curtailed until a re-evaluation of Brian’s
injury could be completed.
Facing eviction
“Carlene called me crying. They were behind on
their rent and were going to be evicted,” says Giles.
“They couldn’t even buy food for their children, which
included a 15-month-old baby.”
Carlene said that when she reached out for help, she
was told that it would be at least two months and
possibly two years before they could do anything. It
was recommended that they go to a homeless center
located 15 miles from their hometown.
“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” says Giles.
“Here is a gentleman who served our country for nine
years, dodging bullets and protecting our freedom,
being told to move into a homeless shelter. I was
appalled and thought there must be a way to help
this family.”
Unfortunately, this situation illustrates how overwhelmed
organizations are today with hundreds of sad cases like
this. And that’s one reason why Easter Seals began a
program especially geared to the military.
Easter Seals to the rescue
“I hung up the phone, called Easter Seals and told the
story,” he relates. “Within a few days, Easter Seals cut
Carlene and Brian a check for three months’ rent and
gave them gift cards to buy food and gasoline.”

They also assigned the family a care coordinator who
connected them with other services and resources,
from financial management and emotional counseling
to a VA benefits advocate.

Vance Cox / Texas
When he retired from dentistry a few years ago, IBO
Vance Cox probably never imagined himself assisting
police officers with traffic control, helping round up stray
cattle, or pretending to be an armed and dangerous
criminal. But he’s done all those things and a lot more
since he’s been involved with the Flower Mound Citizen
Police Academy Alumni Association’s wide-ranging
volunteer programs in the community where he lives.
While on Citizen Public Safety Patrol, for example, he
might be asked to wait for the tow truck to arrive after
a car accident or help manage traffic at a Friday night
football game. “We do things that don’t require a badge
or a gun so the police officers can do what they do
best,” says Vance. “When we can do the mundane
tasks, the officers are freed up to do the work of serving
and protecting citizens.”
450 hours donated
Vance thoroughly enjoys it; he averages nearly 20
hours a month with various activities, which now
include helping train new volunteers. He’s donated
nearly 450 hours on patrol since he signed on in 2011.
“It’s a good way to serve our community and I get to
work with a great group of people,” he states.
The police officers really appreciate their volunteer
groups, who come from all walks of life. And the
citizens, many of whom are retirees, can be proud of
their efforts: volunteers like Vance have helped make
Flower Mound, Texas, one of the 100 safest cities in
the entire country.
“People are surprised to learn that such an
organization exists, but many cities have
similar citizen volunteer programs.”

In November 2011, IBO Angela Heppleston suffered
a devastating loss when her father suddenly died of
cardiac arrest at age 63.
“After his passing, I started looking for a way to not only
keep his memory alive and continue his legacy, but to
honor the kind, loving, hardworking, and generous man
he was,” says Angela.
“My dad was such an amazing
man. I’m happy to honor him by
simply doing what he did his
entire life: giving.”
– angela heppleston
As a retired police officer (serving 40-plus years), a
church elder, and an outstanding husband, father,
and grandfather, “he spent his life serving and helping
others,” she explains. “I never want that part of him to
be forgotten.”
And that’s how the Michael Moran Enrich Memorial
Fund began, an organization dedicated to “enriching
the body and the soul” in the same selfless manner of
its namesake.
Mission trip planned
“Just before he died, my father was scheduled to be
part of a mission’s trip to Nicaragua with his good
friend, Pastor Glen,” recounts Angela. “Pastor Glen told
me how the school he supported in Nicaragua was
trying to start a lunch program to provide 400 children
with at least one nutritious meal and a multivitamin a
day, along with a scripture to memorize.”
The Christian grade school is in the slums of the
capital city of Managua, where nearly 1,500 families
were relocated after the devastation of Hurricane Mitch
in 1998.
“With virtually no support from the government,
these families were left to eke out an existence,”
explains Angela.
The school managed to implement the lunch
program, but needed to raise funds for the vitamins
and the scriptural memorization lessons. “I knew
supporting a school that my father was scheduled to
visit himself was a great opportunity to establish his
legacy,” says Angela.
Raising $6,000
The Michael Moran Enrich Memorial Fund has since
begun a plan to provide all 400 children with a “Daily
Vitamin and ABC Scripture Memorization Program.”
The annual cost of the program is about $6,000, or
$15 per child. They are now raising funds and looking
for sponsors to cover the expense.

Building a robot is more than fun; it’s also a way
for children to learn skills they’ll use all their lives.
Not to mention the education they’ll get in science
and technology.
Jill Bacon / Indiana
Nobody knows this better than IBO Christopher
Stratton, a volunteer mentor for local high school
students in a robotics club who call themselves
Team Tobor (“robot” spelled backward). Each year,
the club joins in a robotics competition sponsored by
FIRST (usfirst.org), a national nonprofit organization
that strives to inspire young people to become
leaders in science and technology. In just six weeks,
contestants must create a robot between 2 and 5 feet
tall that can perform tasks in a game created by FIRST.
“Once they complete the robot, they can’t touch it
again until the competition,” says Christopher. “And
that’s no easy feat.”
Horseback
Riding Hope began 10 years ago with a dream
that two mothers had for their daughters. What
started with one horse, five children with special
needs, and 10 volunteers has now grown into an
amazing organization, serving more than 100
children and involving more than 100 volunteers,
including 12 horses.
Amway Independent Business Owner Jill Bacon,
who’s also an occupational therapist, has volunteered
with Riding Hope for nine years and has seen what a
wonderful impact it makes.
“There are children with Down syndrome who
strengthen their back and tummy muscles so they
can walk and run more independently; children with
cerebral palsy who benefit from the shape of the
horse’s body and the warmth that relaxes their tight
muscles; children with autism who find calmness in
PAGE 20

the repetitive movement of the horse, which helps
them focus and communicate better; children with
social anxiety challenges that connect with the
gentleness of the horse,” says Jill with an enormous
sense of satisfaction.
“It’s incredible to see how
much these kids benefit from
riding the horses.”
– Jill Bacon
The benefits derived from the supportive environment
carry over to the families of the children, too.
“I’m proud to give my time and talent to such a
wonderful organization,” says Jill, noting that it’s
completely run by volunteers. It’s obvious that she
gets a lot out of it, too!
Although the contest is very competitive, the students
are eager to help one another. One year, Christopher’s
team helped two other teams adjust their robots to
meet qualification rules. “Had they not done that, the
other teams wouldn’t even have been able to compete,”
he notes. “They want to help each other.”
Christopher loves spending time with the kids, helping
them learn leadership and success principles. “It
is a blessing and a joy to see them progress,” says
Christopher, who spends an average of 10 hours a
week with the group during the school year.
And they have racked up a great record of success
for their efforts: In six out of seven years of competing,
their teams have seeded in the top 50% and have won
several awards.
Learning valuable skills
The students must raise roughly $10,000 for
registration, robot parts, food, and hotels. That’s
not easy, either. But it does teach them skills in
interacting with all kinds of business people in the
community as they look for donations.

Eye-opening experience
“We’ve learned so much about life,” shares Chris.
“For example, we went with Kevin to get a ‘stash’ of his
clothing carefully wrapped in a big rain coat and stuffed
under a tree downtown in what can only be called an
‘urban closet.’ Kids will do that, then ride a bus all day,
not knowing where they might sleep from one day to
the next. Honestly, we had no clue what the lives of
these kids were like, kids who are friendly, excitable,
and bright, like Kevin.”
Chris and Sheryl Solberg / Washington
A busy
Chris and Sheryl Solberg’s story started with a sermon
at their church. “The pastor talked about ‘outlandish
love’ where you identify a need and just overwhelm it
with love,” recalls Sheryl. “The message I heard was
to love those who might not be easy to love, the way
Jesus did.”
Retirement
Duane Fay / Wisconsin
Many Independent Business Owners look forward to
the time when they can retire from their traditional jobs
and maybe do a little volunteering in their communities.
IBO Duane Fay, who had to retire because of a
disability, has taken that idea to the max, donating his
time and talents not to just one or two organizations,
but to six!
“If I didn’t keep busy, I’d probably be sitting on my
couch watching TV,” he kids.
His first volunteer gig, which he still does, was at the
University of Wisconsin, helping out with his former job
in maintenance.
For the past six years, Duane’s been involved with the
American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, serving in
many capacities. “I’m a cancer survivor, and I believe in
supporting the Cancer Society’s goal of making cancer
so treatable that it’s not a scary word anymore,” says
Duane, who also helps out at a cancer support group.
Then there’s his involvement at Foundation Bible
Church, where he helps with the annual rummage sale,
clothing giveaways, and the children’s fair.

Next up are the Boy Scouts, where he’s Cub
Scout leader for a troop of kids who come from
underprivileged families.
At the local Historical Society, you’ll find him sitting
behind the desk every Wednesday from noon to three
during the off-season.
As if that weren’t enough, a couple of times a year he
takes families from his church – and pays the way for
others who can’t afford it – to the Wilderness Water
Park in the Wisconsin Dells.
And his eyes are always open for more opportunities to
help. “Volunteering is a great way to meet new people,”
he notes. “And it makes you feel good, too.”
Afterward, the pastor made a bold request to the
congregation: Who would be willing to sign up to help
people in our community who need a place to live for a
season? Someone who has maybe lost a job or a teen
in crisis with no place to go?
“Chris and I looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s do
it,’” says Sheryl. “And shortly after that, guess what
happened: The church called us!”
“Can you take him in?”
Pastor Rory from their church had come across a
young man, Kevin, who was alone at a fast food
restaurant on Christmas Eve. “Kevin had been
bouncing between homeless youth shelters and
churches,” says Sheryl. “He had no real place to land.
Pastor Josh asked us if we could take him in for awhile.”
Chris and Sheryl were determined to teach Kevin
some basic life skills and get him off to a fresh start.
“Really, we mainly want to love him as Jesus teaches
us and Holy Spirit guides us,” says Sheryl. People in the
community stepped up to provide clothes, dental and
medical services, a phone, and a computer.
“We had no idea what life was
like for these homeless kids.”
– Sheryl solberg
Healing journey
Kevin is also getting counseling through Friends of
Youth, an organization that serves homeless youth, and
Sheryl and Chris enrolled him in a driving class, paid for
by donations. “We see that as a part of his future to live
independently,” says Sheryl.
In the meantime, they say, “We are trusting God for the
answers. It is to His glory that each step of our ‘walk’
continues. He has amazed us so far; why would we
think that will change?”
They said yes, and it seemed like divine intervention.
“I’m certain the Lord felt we were ready to grow,” says
Sheryl. So Kevin moved in, and their lives haven’t been
the same since.

Orphans
The 2013 Hero Award winners will be announced at Achievers 2013 in Miami!
Alexia Johnson / Washington
It is early morning in Guatemala City. The sounds of
church bells ringing and the echoes of children singing
are coming from an orphanage. Their voices float above
the walls that separate them from the violence and
danger of the city.
This is Hogar Rafael Ayau, where Amway Independent
Business Owner Alexia Johnson decided to make a
pilgrimage to help the orphanage any way she could.
At the time, three Orthodox Christian nuns, including
Madre Ivonne, had been asked to take over the
orphanage after it was discovered that the children
there were being mistreated.
With much hard work, a church and school were
built, as well as a wall to protect the children from the
outside world.
“Here I learned the power of prayer and of God’s love,”
says Alexia about the experience that changed her life.
As she helped clean the church and build a garden,
Alexia saw how simple things mattered so much to
these children, who had so very little. It surprised her to
learn that even zip lock bags were precious to them.
Happy in spite of difficulties
In spite of their difficulties, “The children really seemed
happy, even if their clothes didn’t fit right,” relates
Alexia. “I noticed one boy had a rope holding up his
pants instead of a belt, but things like that didn’t seem
to matter to them.”
PAGE 24
Achieve
Alexia was able to help bring smiles to these children.
She and a group of women volunteers took the older
girls to buy new clothes. On another day she was part
of the group that took the younger children to the zoo.

The nuns wanted to move the children away from the
loud, dangerous city, so they decided to build a new
place in the mountains, overlooking a lake, near their
monastery. And now the children are surrounded by
peace and beauty, including a majestic domed church.
“I learned that the simplest things
can mean the world to people.”
– alexia johnson
A work in progress
“This is a big project, still in progress, but the nuns
have faith that God will provide,” says Alexia. She notes
that her time at the orphanage made a lasting impact
on her, especially now that she has a baby herself.
“The love for a child is so deep. I can only imagine how
the nuns must feel for all of those children,” she says.
“They are so close. They are like a family.”
“These children have so little, but they are all smiles,”
says Alexia. “And their smiles are so contagious
that you have to smile back. You can really change
people’s day, maybe even their world, if you just
smile. It is so simple!”

We CARE
About Kids
Rewind to March 2013 … Amway was in the spotlight at KeyArena in Seattle
as a proud co-sponsor of We Day Seattle, the first-ever We Day event in the
United States.
We Day, a creation of Free the Children – an international charity and
educational partner – is a celebration of good works and services
performed. It’s also the formal kick-off for a yearlong service initiative
that further motivates, educates, and inspires young people to make a
difference in their communities and the world.
As co-sponsor of the March event, Amway invited young IBOs (18
and under) and the 13- to 18-year-old children of IBOs to share their
stories of good works in their schools, churches, and communities
for a chance to earn a ticket to this one-of-a-kind event.
We know IBOs and their families are incredibly giving people,
involved in supporting many organizations. But we were
especially moved to read stories of generosity by young
people, such as raising money for medical research,
collecting blankets for the homeless, or helping build a home
for their dying pastor. Teens donated their hair for wigs for
cancer patients, served seniors, and organized fun runs to
buy wheelchairs.
These young people are the future and it looks very bright!
We’re proud of your compassion and commitment to serving
others and equally proud to call you part of the extended
Amway family.
The U.S. Dream Academy is a philanthropic partner
proudly supported by Amway and many Independent
Business Owners (IBOs). The Dream Academy
empowers at-risk kids to believe in themselves and
succeed. Its after-school programs encourage and
help young people overcome their circumstances
through character building, skills building, and
dreaming big dreams.
Over the past seven years, the relationship between
the Dream Academy, a few IBO leaders, and Amway
has grown into a community of support.
Together:
• IBOs and Amway executives serve on the Dream
Academy Board.
• We help raise the visibility of the dedicated work
of the board, executive team, and all the Dream
Academy staff.

IBOs and their kids
That opportunity arose earlier this year, at the
Amway-sponsored We Day event in Seattle. Dream
Academy founder and CEO Wintley Phipps and two
amazing young people from the Orlando Dream
Academy Center – Samela (Sam) Pynas and Samy
Georges – were center stage in front of 15,000 young
people and hundreds of media.
They took the mics to share the student-led work that
resulted in the launch of the academy’s new Safe
Passages Home program.* For their vision and the
successful launch of the program, they earned the
first grant from Amway North America’s “Who Cares

Safe Passages

K i d s l ead the way to a s a f er day
When the U.S. Dream Academy surveyed the
kids and teens in their after-school programs
about challenges they face each day, they learned
getting to and from school safely was one of the
kids’ top concerns.
The dangers of fights, gang activity, crime,
abandoned buildings, dark streets – things that
would make most adults think twice about turning
the corner – threatened many of the kids while
walking home.
It was a call to action … and it was the Dream
Academy kids who answered that call! They
formed focus groups to understand the issues their
classmates and communities faced. Often working
outside their comfort levels, they engaged local
public safety teams and administrators to explain
their goals, and built trust and relationships where
there had been none.
PAGE 28
Achieve
One of the most important elements of the U.S. Dream
Academy program is dream building. Kids who grow
up never having traveled outside of their neighborhood
or with poor reading skills and limited internet access
often cannot envision the vast number of opportunities
available to them in their lives.
The program born from their work – Safe Passages
Home – engages older Dream Kids; parents;
law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel; and
community members to ensure kids feel safe while
traveling to and from school each day. Volunteers
from churches and businesses along the kids’
most traveled routes stepped up, too, to make the
commitment of watching over kids.
Imagine what this program means to the kids. Their
concerns spurred action; their work resulted in a
plan; their engagement made the difference. Imagine
the difference in how they view their world today and
their ability to influence it … it’s the best of the work
of the Dream Academy!
Dream Academy staff and the mentors who work with
the kids have the incredible job of exposing kids to a
bigger world, full of possibilities … and, dreams!

the U.S. Dream Academy to
the audience at the Seattle
We Day event.
During the planning of the Safe Passages Home
program launch in Orlando, Amway staff met a very
talented young artist, 14-year-old Cadetson St. Pierre.
Cadetson loves to draw. He pencils caricatures on his
notebooks and spends a lot of his free time recreating
images he sees and likes.
Did he ever think his talent could fuel a career in the
arts? Not until a bookmark he illustrated found its
way into the 15,000 gift bags for the young people
who attended the Amway-sponsored We Day event in
Seattle. Now, he’s seriously thinking about a future in the
visual arts!

The School that IBOs Built
T H E S C H O O L T H AT
IBOS BUILT
Doug & Amie Weir / North Carolina
Ten years ago, if anyone had told Doug and Amie Weir,
Amway Independent Business Owners (IBOs) and
Founders Diamonds, that one day they’d be starting
and running a private school, they probably would have
laughed and said, “What, us? No way!”
But life is full of surprises. And in 2010, they proudly
watched Liberty Preparatory Christian Academy, a
school they organized and run in Mooresville, N.C.,
open its doors to its first 100 students.
A simple goal
It all began simply enough: they were just looking for
a good private school for their two daughters after the
small Christian school they were attending closed.
“We found there weren’t many options available to us,”
recalls Amie.
They knew, too, that there were others in the
community who were looking for the same thing, but for
many, expense was an issue. “It broke my heart to hear
stories of how people wanted private educations for
their children, but couldn’t afford it,” recalls Doug.
University Model School
Upon completing an exhaustive round of research, they
discovered that an education model existed for exactly
what they had in mind. The University Model School
(UMS), was founded on solid values and combines
classroom experience with parental involvement and
home schooling – at about half the cost of typical
private schools.
Amie called the UMS school association in Texas,
thinking maybe a representative could come and meet
with them. “But I found out that all of their schools had
been started by parents, just like us.”
Neither Doug nor Amie had backgrounds in education.
But thanks to their successful Amway™ business,
they had the time, financial resources and access to
a network of others who could help them pursue their
dream of opening a school for their girls, and making
private school education possible for many who could
not otherwise afford it.
Before they knew it, they were knee deep in research
materials and forging ahead. “We just took all the
principles we had learned from our Amway business
and applied it to starting a school,” says Amie about
their journey of working hard, setting goals, and
believing in what they were doing.
“This school would not exist except for
Amway IBOs, and it’s the best example
I know of to show what IBOs are doing
to make the world a better place.”
– Doug Weir
PAGE 30

PAGE 31
So many challenges
The challenges they faced were too many to count:
from fundraising (with only a concept to present);
to finding students, teachers, and a location; to
completing all the bureaucratic paperwork and having
permits in place; to making sure the school was
equipped with everything it needed to function, down
to the last piece of chalk … the list went on and on.
Again, they drew on their business, as a wide-ranging
network of IBOs stepped in to help with substantial
checks, behind-the-scenes connections, much love
and encouragement, and a few miracles.
“There is no way this school would exist today without
our Amway™ independent business and our crossline
friends all over the country,” says Doug. “Their own
children couldn’t even benefit, but they believed so
much in what we were doing that they contributed
thousands and thousands of dollars, which enabled us
to do everything right, from the very start.”
IBOs who live nearby not only gave their money but
their time, rolling up their sleeves to paint walls, unload
furniture, and do whatever needed to be done.
From zero to 250 in three years
This fall, Liberty Prep will welcome 250 students, from
kindergarten through the 11th grade, and the waiting
list is growing. The school has been a dream come
true, not just for Amie and Doug, but for many other
families, too.
“The impact Liberty Prep is making on the community
is incredible,” says IBO Dan Amerman, dean of
students at the school. “We are getting positive
feedback all across the region. What Doug and Amie
have done through their unselfish dedication and
commitment is truly inspiring.”
Said the mother of one student recently, “Liberty Prep
has been such a wonderful experience for my son!
He feels important, smart, and truly cared for by his
teachers and his friends. We are so happy and thankful
for this opportunity for our family.” And with a robust
tuition assistance program, a private education is within
the reach of many who otherwise couldn’t offer it to
their children.
The Weirs still face many challenges. They’d like
to find someone to replace Amie, who still serves
as director with no salary. They’d also like to be
able to buy a building rather than lease, as they’ve
been doing.
In the meantime, the kids are learning in a
supportive, family-focused environment that builds
character, instills in them a love of learning, and
encourages them to develop their God-given talents
to their fullest potential.
Learning to give, too
One of the basic tenets of Liberty Prep is that the
children learn about serving others. Says Amie, “They
need to know it’s not just about us.” In addition to doing
volunteer work in their community, such as visiting
nursing homes, they also support an orphanage in
Ghana, Africa, where eight boys were rescued from
slavery. “The students themselves raise money to
donate by doing extra chores or giving up their
birthday gifts,” says Amie. “I’ll never forget one
seventh-grade girl who had saved up $120. She
said to her mom, ‘I don’t need this, I don’t even
know what I’m saving for. I want to give it to the
orphanage.’ I hear heartwarming stories like that
all the time about our kids.”
“For me,” says Amie, “the most satisfying part of all
this is just having so many parents thank us for creating
a school where their children truly enjoy learning again.”
“What’s amazing is how many IBOs
donated to our school when they really
couldn’t benefit from it because they
lived so far away or didn’t even have
kids. It was just that they believed
so much in what we were doing.”
The School That IBOs Built
Many hands
Doug is quick to credit Amie for their amazing
accomplishment. “She really put this together
on her own with no salary, experience, or
government funding. And while continuing to
grow our Amway™ business and raise our two
daughters! She is such a special person. And
although she started it and continues to do most
of the work, it’s Amway IBOs who made it all
possible. It is truly the school that Amway built.”

Reaching Emerald is a significant achievement, the result of sustained effort and successful
leadership. As Emeralds, IBOs have demonstrated their ability to sell, recruit, train, motivate,
and teach others to do the same. They have built healthy organizations and are reaping the
rewards of their hard work.
Lorenza and Roberto Martínez | California
Living the dream: The light Roberto saw at the end of the tunnel when he learned
about the Amway™ business now shines brightly on him and Lorenza (Lore). “Being
able to sleep in, not punch a time clock, take Daniela (10) and Bianca (8) to school,
and spend time with each other – these are the wonderful things we enjoy, thanks
to this business!” he says.
Looking to the future: “One of the greatest recommendations I can make is
learn how to dream,” he continues. “Dreams are the fuel that will keep you going.”
For Roberto and Lore, their dreams include travel (Jerusalem, Hawaii, and Italy), a
ranch house with horses, a stellar education for their girls, and being able to help
others accomplish their dreams through the Amway opportunity.
Germán Calvo | California
Cindy Min and Boksoo Lee | California
Living the dream: After years of tying his bumper to his old and worn-out car
to hold it in place, Germán enjoys driving his new vehicle. Even more than the
toys and the travel, however, he loves being able to dedicate quality time to “my
beautiful daughter, Merlyn Yaretzi (7). Thank goodness I can, since I don’t have
a job!” Now instead of working 14 hours a day at two jobs, he has time for the
important things in life and building his Amway™ business.
Living the dream: Cindy and Boksoo have found a close-knit community of
friends among fellow IBOs since starting their Amway business. “We came
here (from Korea) looking for a business,” she explains. They liked that the startup
cost was substantially lower than other opportunities they’d considered. Eventually,
Boksoo was able to leave his job as manager of a flower shop. “Before, I was
focused on the now,” he says. “Now I’m among the 5% planning for the future.”
Looking to the future: “I want to make sure Merlyn can follow her dreams,”
Germán says, “and I also want to bring my parents here (from Mexico).” Beyond
that, “I am eager to take my business to the next level, thankful for the opportunity
I have, and grateful I can share it with more people.”
Looking to the future: Cindy becomes emotional talking about their goals.
“We want to live out our Christian faith by supporting missionary work. It’s also
important to us to take good care of our parents. And we want to share our
success with downline IBOs by taking them on a cruise when we reach Diamond.”
Hilda and José Garcia | Florida
Robbie and Shishma Mohammed | Trinidad
Living the dream: When José learned about the Amway business opportunity,
he saw freedom from the physically demanding tile-laying business he and Hilda
owned. “We wanted to quit at a decent age,” he relays. Thanks to their Amway
business, “We’ve already realized that dream.” They’ve also grown closer to
their daughters, Adianet (31), who’s a Sapphire, and Yanin (29), who’s qualifying
Gold. “This business has been a blessing for the unity it has brought our family!”
José remarks.
Living the dream: “We have a lot more flexibility, peace of mind, and time for
ourselves (and soon their son, due in September),” Robbie says. “This is all that we
do – and have done since college. We enjoy showing people there is a better way!”
He and Shishma have worked hard to reach out to those from Gen Y: They even
maintain some product inventory so their customers don’t have to wait once they
place their orders.
Looking to the future: Hilda loves traveling and is looking forward to doing
more of it down the road. “But right now we’re in the run for Diamond,” she says.
Someday she and José would like to own a “beautiful, big home with lots of
bedrooms and a pool” so that they always have room for friends.
Looking to the future: “We’re excited about our son growing up in the business
and reading his first book, The Magic of Thinking Big!” Shishma says. She and
Robbie also look forward to “planting the dream and vision in others. This is our
passion,” she states. “We believe this business will work for anyone if they don’t
give up on their dreams.”
Eulogio and Aurelia López | California
Juanita Martínez and Ubaldo Gomez | Illinois
Living the dream: “One of the things that attracted us to the Amway business
is that we could work together,” says Eulogio, who owned and operated two
businesses with his wife. While they managed to work together in those endeavors,
“We work together better now,” Aurelia says. “We’re truly a team, thanks to all
we’ve learned.”
Living the dream: From the brink of divorce to, as they lovingly describe it,
“spending pretty much 24/7 together,” Juanita and Ubaldo are amazed at the
difference their Amway business has made in their marriage. It’s also impacted
their finances, allowing Ubaldo to leave his job in car sales and Juanita her job
in computer repair. “We recommend that people keep an open mind and do the
research” when presented with the opportunity, he says from experience.
Looking to the future: “We came from Mexico with the dream of doing
something big in the land of opportunity,” she continues, “and quickly realized work
derails dreams. Amway has given us so many opportunities and satisfactions, but
the greatest is planting the vision of what could be in another person.” Sharing the
rewards of their business with their parents and children (Irvin Luis, 21; Yajaira, 19;
Rafael, 16; and Jennifer, 12) is the icing on the cake.

Emerald
Looking to the future: “Our kids say, ‘If you guys are happy, then the whole
family is happy,’” Juanita shares. Naomi (24), Daisy (17), and Isaiah (10) “have
also grown through this wonderful opportunity,” she adds. While money can’t
buy happiness, it can help you fulfill certain dreams, like traveling the world and
supporting charitable organizations.
The average monthly Gross Income for “active” IBOs in the U.S. was $202 in 2010.
Approximately 46% of all IBOs in the U.S. were “active.”

Mayelin Torres and José Luis Cabrera | Florida
Living the dream: For Kun, the Amway™ business embodies everything his
wife Gloria exemplified: energy, enthusiasm, loyalty, and sincerity. “She saw the
potential to positively impact a lot of people,” he says. Sadly, Kun, and indeed the
greater Amway community, lost an amazing friend when Gloria passed away in
February from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Kun, who suffered
multiple fractures, spent several weeks in the hospital.
Living the dream: “Life is happier for us today,” states José Luis. “Thanks to our
Amway™ business, we feel like we’re making a difference.” Adds Mayelin, “We have
that hope that you really can’t find in any other line of work. Our goals are always
changing and growing, and life just keeps getting better.”
Looking to the future: “I’ve had a lot of support from downlines and my
sons (Jay Youl and Jae Chang),” he says. Still recovering, Kun’s eager to meet
granddaughter Seoeun (their first), born May 16 in Korea. Qualifying Diamond is
in his plans, “because that was Gloria’s goal.” He pauses and then adds, “I want
to be her Diamond.”
Looking to the future: Mayelin has her sights set on leaving her job in accounting
in the near future. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with our children
(Katelyn, 11, and Brian, 7) and seeing the world,” she says. “We both want to
dedicate ourselves full time to our Amway business so we can do more to help
our family, our team, and certain charities,” adds José Luis, who owned a towing
company when they started.
Tulio and Nelina Portal | New Jersey
Ligia and Aramis Valencia | Florida
Living the dream: “We love to eat together with our children (Nelina, 24;
Anita, 23; and Tulio Jr., 21 – all IBOs), because we never had time before,” says
Nelina, a general manager of a fast-food restaurant. Thanks to her and Tulio’s
Amway business, she’s been able to cut back from working six-and-a-half
days at the restaurant per week to working part time. “Amway is my life and my
future!” she exclaims.
Living the dream: When his restaurant closed its doors, Aramis and Ligia
were left with tremendous debt. Even with three jobs between them, they still
struggled financially. Enter the Amway business. “It has been life itself!”
Aramis remarks. Not only are they paying off their debt, they’re also on track
for Diamond, a goal their seven children fully support. “They’re looking forward
to Hawaii,” Ligia exclaims.
Looking to the future: Tulio, a former long-haul driver, loves that life now holds
“a lot of possibilities and dreams.” Besides making sure their parents are never in
need and their children are established in their professions, the Portals want to
establish an orphanage in their homeland of Peru. “Amway doesn’t give you just a
business, but the opportunity to help others,” he says.
Looking to the future: “Aramis kept telling me, ‘Wait until we get there!’ because
he knew life would get better,” she says. “Now our goal is to get all our team to at
least the level of Emerald.” From here, the goals of buying “a great big house” and
supporting Aramis’ mother so she can retire no longer seem impossible.
Félix Salazar and Lizceldy Carmona | California
Ana Wilda and Manuel Morales | Dominican Republic
Living the dream: This past December, Félix was finally able to quit his
construction job. “It was too much stress!” he recalls. “The peace of mind our
Amway business now gives me is a great wealth I wouldn’t trade for anything.”
Lizceldy, who’s been home with their children Alejandro (5) and Litzy (4) since they
were born, remarks, “Being able to dedicate my time to them is priceless!”
Living the dream: Before starting their Amway business, “we had a very fastpaced life and hardly saw each other or our children (Manuel Eduardo, 6, and
Ana Lucía, 4),” recalls Ana Wilda. At Sapphire, she was able to quit her job as
an attorney. Through the Amway business, Manuel, who owns a construction
company, is “now able to focus less on building housing and more on building
people,” he says. “Now we have time to walk together and plan vacations.”
Looking to the future: Félix agrees. “We love spending time with them and want
them to know the world is big and they can achieve anything.” Travel, a larger
home, giving back to their hometown in Mexico – these are all on their dream list.
But at the top is “to be the first Hispanic Crown Ambassadors in the U.S,” he says.
“We eat, sleep, and breathe this business!”
RECOGNITION | EMERALD
Gloria and Kun Oh | Minnesota
Looking to the future: “Of course, we want to help downline IBOs and secure
the future for our children,” Ana Wilda comments. “But we also want to treat our
parents like royalty! And we want to give back. We believe here on earth, we are
the hands of God, so we want to make a difference.”
Hugo and Alicia Sosa | Nevada
Living the dream: “We are thankful for the Amway business,” says Hugo, who’s
been able to leave the hard work of waiting tables behind. “It’s improved not only
our finances, but all areas of our lives.” Having control over their time means he
and Alicia are able to spend more time together and “give our daughters (Meztli,
13, and Dafne, 7) the time they need and deserve. We’re confident we chose the
right way, because of these rewards and blessings in our life.”
Looking to the future: “We joined this business to achieve our goals,” Alicia says,
sharing that she and Hugo dream of traveling to Italy and Brazil, and someday
owning a cabin. “Now our commitment is to our team, who’ve become like family
to us. We’ll work hard to support their dreams as well.”

IBOAI® Board members know firsthand the value
of serving and supporting, and the favorable
results it can bring. Their partnership with Amway
makes a positive difference for IBOs and the
Business Opportunity. In addition, the IBOAI and
its members’ support of nonprofit organizations
improves lives of others through Easter Seals,
Network of Caring, Habitat for Humanity,
LaunchPad, U.S. Dream Academy, and more.
LaunchPad, The Center for Hope and Building Dreams
is an after-school program for middle school
at-risk teens in Austin, Texas, not far from the
home of Founders Diamonds Juanita and Antonio
Maldonado. The Maldonados are passionate
about giving back to the community and believe
in the vision of LaunchPad to equip and enrich
the quality of life for disadvantaged youth and
undeserved families to build safe, productive,
and vital communities.
Juanita explains, “It was important to us to find an
organization in our community that would empower
young people and let them know if they dream big
and discipline themselves to work toward those
dreams, they can achieve them. We also know
through our business how beneficial it can be to
have a mentor who believes in you.” The Maldonados
have served on the LaunchPad Board of Directors
for four years and speak at special events to inspire
teens to make healthy choices in life.
Executive Diamonds Angelo and Claudia Nardone
are also passionate about helping at-risk children
thrive. To the Nardones, family is everything and
when children have parents who are incarcerated,
they are robbed of hope. That’s why the Nardones,
along with many other IBO leaders, join Amway
in support of the U.S. Dream Academy. IBOAI
Governance & Oversight Chair Jody Victor serves
as chairman of the Dream Academy Board.
“I believe in the U.S. Dream
Academy 100%, because it
gives the majority of its
donated dollars directly to
children’s programs, and to
actually see the end result
of what an after-school
program does for these
children is rewarding.”
– Angelo Nardone
