Summer is
over, kids are
back in school,
Commodore
the BYC is
gearing up for its
busy year, and I have just completed two months
as your Commodore. The time is flying, and I am
loving every moment of my year. Friday nights
continue to be our favorite Club night, and last
Friday the Club was full as we all enjoyed Taylor
& Taylor in the lounge. It’s great to see the Club
busy, especially during August.
My favorite gathering this summer was our
Clam Bake Parrot Head Party (really it was a
lobster night). Those of us that attended enjoyed
the evening, and the food seemed to be more
than what our stomachs could handle. The Club
really gave us a treat that night with 1½ pound
lobsters or huge strip steaks. After having had so
many people ask to have this night repeated, I
am sure George has it on his calendar.
This month marks the beginning of various
Club activities starting with the 34th Annual
Kick-Off Regatta. Entertainment kicks off their
year on September 10th with a Comedy Night.
OOO
Janet Amar
This is the beginning of a whirlwind year. Read
the Poop Deck and check the calendar. You do
not want to miss what’s coming up.
Our Facebook page is getting a bit of a new
look. One of the items being added is a BYC
Boater’s Swap Shop so that boating equipment
can be traded, sold or given away between BYC
members. Thanks to member Bob Harris for
the idea of a “Swap Shop”, and thank you Jenifer
and Cindy for making it happen.
There’s so much in store this year – we will
be the envy of other clubs. The beautiful Pram
Fleet Building is nearing completion and with
that will come other opportunities for our Club.
The quarterly financials will be reported
to you on our website under the password
protected area of Member Central called
“Treasurer Quarterly Report”. We are moving
the reporting of this information from the Poop
Deck to a more private and secure area for
members only. You will be notified when the
reports are ready for viewing.
By this reading, you, the membership, should
have received your notice of a Special Meeting
of the Membership to be held on September
SEPTeMBER 2016
8th regarding the roof project either by email
or post. If you have not, please contact the BYC
office immediately. The purpose of this Special
Meeting is for membership to approve an earlier
commencement date for the replacement of
the roof, which was originally approved by
membership for the Fall of 2017. Membership
will be asked to approve a new commencement
date of January 2017. This request is due to the
increased deterioration and other arising roof
issues occurring more rapidly than originally
expected. The funds that were approved by
membership for this project are available now
to proceed upon your approval. If you are
unable to attend this Special Meeting, please be
sure to send in your proxy naming a member
in good standing to vote on your behalf. If you
are unsure on how to complete a proxy, please
contact the BYC office before submitting.
Well, I hope you enjoyed your summer, and
you are ready to join me for some BYC fun.
Please continue to send me your ideas and
thoughts – your involvement will enhance your
BYC experience.
See you around the Club. – Janet

Around Your Club
Summer has come and gone, and the kids are back to school. We are
headed into Fall which means the Pool Bar will no longer be open for lunch on
weekdays. However, we will still have service outside if desired. The Pool Bar’s
new days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the Fall season. Due to popular
demand the last Thursday of every month will be our “Family Bingo” outside
at the Pool Bar starting at 6:00 pm. September is going to be a very exciting
month. The Entertainment Committee was able to secure a live comedy show
on September 10th starring Bobby Kelton, a Tonight Show Veteran. Please
make reservations ASAP. Seats are limited.
As you may know, the BYC has been working without an Executive Chef for
the last three months. I have been interviewing a large number of applicants
and at this time I’m pleased to announce that the next Executive Chef of the
Bradenton Yacht Club will be Brian Perrone. We are excited to have Chef
Perrone join our team at the BYC. Chef Perrone attended Johnson and Wales
from 2004-2006. He studied Culinary Arts and worked at the very successful
restaurant Brice in Miami. Chef Perrone then moved to New York to finish
his internship. Soon after he was hired at the Jacksonville Golf and Country
Club. Two years ago he accepted an offer to become the Executive Sous at the
Deerwood Country Club in Jacksonville where he spent the last four years.
Chef Perrone will be a presence in front of the house as well as in the kitchen,
so please say hello.
We are doing our Club shut down from September 24th to September 29th.
The Club, including the pool, will be closed. On Friday September 23rd, we
will be having a close down blow out party. This party will include live music
from Caribbean Cowboy and will feature a Grand Buffet Menu. – George

“Fish Tales”
Fisherman of the Month: John Izmirlian
John has been a BYC member for 9 years. He is a sailor and an experienced
power boater. When asked to choose between the two, John split the difference
by stating that his ideal craft would be a “Pilot House Motor Sailor”.
John met and married his wife Betsy here at BYC. Both John and Betsy have
been very involved in various BYC activities and are valuable members with
John having served distinguishably on our Board of Directors.
John with his red
snapper catch.
Jason Joule’s recent
catch on John’s
boat, Pollux II.
What is the largest fish you ever caught?
The largest fish I ever landed was a 5 foot nurse shark. The largest game fish I
have caught was a 33 inch striped bass which I landed off Long Beach Island,
New Jersey.
Your favorite fish to eat? Black Sea Bass.
Ever been frightened while on the
water?
Yes, when I was sailing my Laser sailboat in
a 35 knot wind off Long Beach, California. I
came very close to rolling over.
Favorite fish preparation?
Fried in my mother’s cast iron skillet. – Troy

humid, perfect for lounging in the pool. The crews dined at Pasadena
Yacht Club on Friday night, joined by Bob and Linda Enberg, and
Steve and Keri Hockett after “docktails” on Windward. Twenty people
attended the dinner at Pia’s Trattoria in Gulfport on Saturday night
with Frank and Diana Wendt along with friends, and Fred and Trish
Ruggiero, who drove up for the occasion. Wind that was lacking on
the trip up Friday, returned with a vengeance on Sunday as twenty
knot Easterlies filled the sails for a race home. The next cruise is being
captained by Mark and Denise Berté to Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club on
the weekend of September 23rd through the 25th. The October Cruise
will be captained by Steve and Keri Hockett to Long Boat Key Club
Moorings on October 7th through the 9th.
The next Sail Fleet Meeting is September 7th when Mike Clay,
Bay News 9 Chief Meteorologist,
will speak from a meteorologist’s
perspective on Tampa Bay
Weather. Mike Clay helped launch
Bay News 9 in 1997 and was part
of the team that installed Klystron
9, the first of its kind radar at any
television station. One of Clay’s
most memorable moments at
Bay News 9 was the morning of
August 13, 2004 when Bay News
9 successfully forecast Hurricane
Charley to stay south of the Tampa
Bay area. This is a very timely topic
from a national weather expert to discuss details and
methods utilized to predict forecasts, particularly
hurricanes that affect our lives as Florida residents.
Mike spoke at the BYC last year and his discussions
are very engaging with ample time for questions. Be
sure to make your reservations for our September
7th meeting. You’ll be glad you did.

Cruising - Although BYC takes an August break and combines two
months of Poop Decks into one, the Sail Fleet maintained course with
two great dinner meetings and one cruise entered in the log. At the
July meeting, Pat Keller was awarded the Sail Boat Tough Luck Award.
The presentation by Joe McClash of The Inaugural BYC Cuba Voyage,
was thoroughly enjoyed by a sellout attendance. The August meeting
highlighted the Sail Race Fleet with presentations of the “Beer Can”
racing series awards by Tom Grubb. He also arranged the evening’s
guest speaker, Charley Morgan, world renowned yacht designer and
sailor. Charley wove an intriguing tale of his early Tampa Bay days
as a “wharf rat” to becoming founding member of Morgan Yachts. He
also designed and sailed “Heritage” for the America’s Cup.
The Sail Fleet Cruises commenced with a trip to Pasadena Yacht
Club August 12th through 14th. Six boats made the cruise northward
on a windless Friday. Russ Ward and first mate Sylvia Barber on
Windward, Mark and Denise Berté on Swamp Rabbit, Alan Darrow
and long time fellow sailing buddy Lorin on Avalon, Joe and Casey
McClash on Windcaller, Larry and Linda Scott on Island Attitude,
and John and Anna Broshears on Anna Marie. The days were hot and

Racing - Here comes the start of the racing
season! September marks the first major regatta
of the Tampa Bay area (Sept 16 – 18), and it
is hosted right here at the BYC. It is known
across the area for its prime race location in
lower Tampa Bay, and for the entertainment we
provide after the racing. The regatta boasts two
days of exciting racing with live entertainment
and a pool party Saturday. There are multiple
Tom Grubb
fleets of racers, some doing windward leeward
courses in the middle of the bay, while others sail the perimeter
around the bay south of the Sunshine Skyway. A great way to prepare for the Kick Off
Regatta is to come out for some weekly “Beer
Can” Races. Our races are usually about an
hour long and currently are held on Thursday
evenings at 6:30pm, which is one of the most
beautiful times to sail in the summer! We just
finished the first summer series, where Frank
Yamamoto and the good crew of Black Star
proved to be the champs by one race! The weekly racer boat owners and crew were presented annual
awards at the last Sail Fleet dinner. Since Charley Morgan, designer
of the boat “Heritage,” (campaigned for the America’s Cup in 1970),
was giving the presentation that night (somewhat intentionally
timed), it seemed appropriate to hand out annual awards and get
some pictures with the sailing legend! No surprise that “Black Star”
was presented “Club Champ” award for winning three of four series
in J/24 class. Bob Klement was first in non-spin for the year with
“Special K,” and David Krahm was presented “Rookie of the Year,”
as the newest member of the J/24 fleet. John Izmirlian was also
presented the “BYC Seafarer Award” for his statewide campaign of
“Sidewalk Express.” Boat owners were presented with Unique Beer
Can trophies and medals for their crews!
For those of you who would
rather watch sailboat racing on TV, the America’s Cup World Series
is in full swing! I went to one of
the races in Chicago last month
and was in awe of the technology
behind today’s performance
sailing. There are still several
qualifying races before the main
event in June 2017. Get caught up in the action during the lead up to
the oldest competition in professional sports: September 10-11, 2016
Toulon, France; November 18-20, 2016 Fukouka, Japan; and the
Final Match for the cup in Bermuda June 17-27, 2017.
Upcoming Local Events: Kick Off Regatta Sept 16-18 and the
legendary “BYC Commodores at the Helm” regatta is October 15th! Find a present or past commodore and compete to be immortalized
on the new perpetual plaque! As always, please contact me for any information you need for local
sailboat racing- [email protected].

Please enjoy this additional article I put
together about the America’s Cup from
their website and my summer visit to an
ACWS race in Chicago. – Tom Grubb
The America’s Cup, then
and now, in a nutshell...
In 1851, Queen Victoria and Prince
Albert hosted the first World’s Fair, and
they invited the world to come and display
their latest technological advancements
in a sailing regatta. The New York Yacht
Club built a racing yacht and named it
“America” to compete in the race. On
race day, the race fleet consisted of one
American ship and several British ones. The America’s triumph was quite
one-sided. “As the schooner, named “America,” passed the royal race
committee in first place, Queen Victoria asked one of her attendants to
tell her who was in second place. “Your Majesty, there is no second,”
came the reply. That phrase, just four words, is still the best description
of the America’s Cup, and how it represents the singular pursuit of
excellence. They donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club under
a Deed of Gift, which stated that the trophy was to be “a perpetual
challenge cup for friendly competition between nations.”
The America’s Cup is much different today, but the spirit of the race is
unchanged. There are multiple “qualifying races” around the world. The
winner of these races will challenge the American boat, Oracle in
Bermuda in June 2017. I was able to go to a qualifying event in Chicago
and witness the spectacular technology of these boats. Hopefully my
pictures do them justice! If you have a chance to watch any of the races,
in person or on TV, I highly recommend it!
Upcoming Qualifying Races: September 10-11, 2016, Toulon FRA;
November 18-20, 2016, Fukouka JPN; and Final Match in Bermuda,
June 17-27, 2017. Enjoy the racing! – Tom

Membership
What a year it has been already. As I walk around the Club, I keep hearing what are our
numbers? What are our numbers? At this moment we have 566 total voting memberships and 583
Total All Members. Closing out the last fiscal year, the Membership Team exceeded their goal for
new members and also produced a startling 93% retention. Over the last three years, an average of
81 members has joined the BYC and with only 2 months into the new fiscal year, 11 New Members
have joined. That allusive 650 membership cap does look like it is within our grasp for the 20162017 membership year.
Our next Potential New Member Mixer is Friday, September 9th from 6 - 8pm; we would like
to ask all of our BYC Members to bring a potential new member to the Club for an evening of fun
with complimentary appetizers, a round of drinks on us and good times for all! This event has
gone from 25 attendees to 80 at our last mixer. We always have some sort of game planned for
the potential new members, like BYC Trivia or a Scavenger Hunt, Let’s Make a Deal or a Balloon
Pop; you never know what giveaways we will offer at these events. Remember… BYC issues a $100
credit to the sponsoring member should they join at full Initiation. But even if there is no credit
given, we are still the best deal around. If you ask your friends what they are paying at the other
private clubs, you will be shouting us from the rooftops.
If you know of anyone who is interested and cannot
attend the mixer, have them stop by the office or call
and ask for Jenifer and she will guide a property tour
and provide all the information that they need. The
Membership Committee has also created business
card size 60 day Promotional Invitations. You can
stop by anytime to pick up a few, they are located atop
the red cabinet under the name badges just out front
of the Membership Office. These are great to put in
your wallet or purse and when you are out and about
and someone inquires or has interest in membership,
just give them the card and say “call”. For those of you

individual/family to utilize the BYC and enjoy all the
aspects of the Club to see if we are a good fit for their lifestyle!
Membership is so pleased to welcome Junior Director, Jordan Chancey
to the Board of Directors. We look forward to Jordan’s ideas and knowledge
to help invite Jr. Members as they are the leaders of tomorrow. If you have
just joined or have been a long time member, we invite you to join the
Membership Committee. Be one of the first to meet the new members and
to meet new people. We welcome your ideas and would love for you to be
part of our team. The best way to really feel a part of any organization is to
become a committee member or to be involved with any of our various Clubs
within the Club, and of course, the entertainment events as well as just being
here. (Membership Committee meets the first Tuesday of every month at
5:30pm.)
By the way, if you are looking for a friend you just met and want their
contact information; did you know that the membership roster is on line
at BYC? You can find them under the private side of our website, under
“Member Central/roster”. Not yet registered…it’s easy, just go to the BYC Home page and click
register. Questions, call the office and they will be happy to help.
Thank you for allowing me to be your Membership Director!– Pat

This and That
Banquet Banter
Summer may have ended for the kids, but it is still hot outside and
we have a lot of great party options before season begins!
We have a comedy show night coming up this month as well as
the Kick Off Regatta weekend. There is a potential new member
mixer Jenifer is working on as well, so save the date to bring your
interested friends by for a fun cocktail party and show the Club off!
Be sure not to miss the shutdown party towards the end of the
month, as we send off summer with great food and entertainment.
We still have dates available for any holiday parties in December
as well as dates available this month for any birthday pool parties,
anniversaries, etc.
Take advantage of the quiet time and come see us! – Brie
Bylaws Review Coming
By Jack Gorman, Vice Commodore, ByLaw Committee Chairman
Occasionally we Board Members stumble over BYC Bylaws that
are obsolete, or which contradict our Rules or State Law. This usually
results in either a Bylaw amendment patch or a work around. In other
cases, when we look to the Bylaws, they are silent and we have to look
to state law or just wing it.
Given past experience and the patchwork nature of the Bylaws and
Rules, we believe it is time to review and restate our Bylaws under the
guidance of an attorney. We will look to Florida law concerning NonProfits, IRS constraints, FCYC requirements and yacht club trends in
order to update, remove contradictions and re-consider that which is
outdated. The outcome will be submitted to membership.
We’d like to offer the opportunity to members to participate in the
early stages of deciding the priority content and rewording. To this
end we have begun to form a Bylaws Committee, which will begin
monthly meetings in September.
We will expect members to attend monthly and perhaps more
frequent meetings, do some research, provide ideas and become
familiar with existing documents. Hopefully, members will have some
experience with organizations and their documents.
If you would be willing to serve, please contact me, Jack Gorman:

Daytime Play - FROM THE BRIDGE…TABLE
CINDY RHATEGAN
Communications Director
[email protected]
Some interest has been shown in joining our group for bridge on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays
of each month. We play “Party Bridge,” which should give you some idea about the degree of
seriousness. If the last time you played you were on the verge of getting a degree from college,
it will take a couple of sessions to get you up to par on some of the recent improvements to
the game. Someone in our group suggested we have a table for newcomers, where they
can observe our dedication to having fun. For your information, we start at 11:30, play one
round (4 hands), and then have lunch. Following lunch we play three more rounds with three
different partners, and then go home. Perfect!
