I
person’s identity is a very precious and complex thing. In our
world where cyber-identity theft has become such a problem, it is
important to remember that our identities are much more than numbers, user names, codes and passwords. Identity is a measure of quality and of virtue. It can be described from three vantage points, how
one understands one’s own identity, how others perceive us and, finally and most importantly, how God understands us. It is from this last
vantage point that a person’s true identity can be described.
n today’s Gospel, Jesus asks the Apostles,
“Who do the crowds say that I am?” How do
people perceive him? The answer is going to be
subjective. It will depend on the person, what
experience they have of Jesus, what they have
heard and how they understand his message
and actions. Jesus asks again, but this time directing the question specifically at the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Again, the
answer is going to depend on the disciple’s
perception but Peter is the only one that responds, “The Christ of God.” The others are
silent, either confused by the question or
standing by Peter as their spokesman. Jesus’
response is unusual in that he rebukes them,
tells them not to share this with anyone, relates that he will be killed and then rise from
the dead and then asserts that anyone who follows him will have to take up their own cross.
It is certainly a loaded response to a loaded
question and answer.

o, how do we respond to the question, today? How do we perceive Jesus? How does
he fit into our lives? We find our own true
identities in our response. How do we perceive
ourselves and how do we perceive each other?
If Jesus is part of our lives, if we trust in his
guidance and providence and accept his cross,
then little by little, we become identified in
him. In the words taken from “The Breastplate
of St. Patrick”:
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

La identidad de una persona es algo muy precioso y complejo. En nuestro mundo donde el robo cibernético de identidad se ha convertido en un problema, es importante recordar que nuestras
identidades son mucho más que números, nombres de usuario, códigos y contraseñas. La identidad es
una medida de calidad y virtud. Se puede describir a partir de tres puntos de vista, como uno entiende
su propia identidad, como nos consideran los demás y, por último y más importante, como Dios nos
entiende. Es desde este último punto de vista que la verdadera identidad de una persona se puede describir.
En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús pregunta a
sus apóstoles, “¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?”
¿Cómo la gente lo considera? La respuesta va a
ser subjetiva. Depende de la persona, que experiencia tengan de Jesús, que han oído y entienden su mensaje y acciones de Jesús. Jesús pregunta de nuevo, pero esta vez dirigiendo la pregunta específicamente a sus discípulos, “¿Quién
dicen ustedes que soy yo?” Una vez más, la respuesta va a depender de la percepción de los discípulos pero Pedro es el único que responde, “El
Cristo de Dios.” Los otros no dicen nada, ya sea
que están confundidos por la pregunta o dan paso a Pedro como su portavoz. La respuesta de
Jesús es inusual en la que los reprende, les dice
no compartir esto con nadie, les relata que lo van
a matar y que resucitara de entre los muertos y
luego afirma que cualquier persona que lo siga
tendrá que tomar su propia cruz. Sin duda es
una respuesta cargada a una pregunta y respuesta capciosa.

LABYRINTH: The Walking Prayer
Part II—Praying on the Labyrinth
There is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. You can walk quickly or
slowly, follow your heart. Before entering, it is good to take a moment to stand
in silence. Then you might do one of the following:
• Ask God a question upon entering and then listen for an answer as you
walk.
• Pray for yourself on the way in, stop to experience God’s love in the center,
and pray for others on the way out.
• Recite a favorite prayer as you walk.
• As you move toward the center of the labyrinth, focus on letting go of distractions or worries that keep you from God. In the center, spend time reflecting on your relationship with God. Be aware of God’s presence. Then,
as you leave, spend time giving thanks and praising God for all that he has
done.

with God while in the center. Then, you will sense the need to move out
into the world again. As you leave, walk with Jesus back into the places of
ordinary life.
Or, you may just begin the journey with a quiet mind, listening to God, open

JESUCRISTO EL MESIAS

A muchos de nosotros nos gustaría saber que
piensa la gente, nuestros familiares o nuestros amigos acerca de nosotros, pero tenemos miedo a que
nos digan cosas desagradables, de nuestra persona,
nuestro comportamiento o hasta de nuestras acciones.
En el evangelio de hoy Jesús les hace a los apóstoles la pregunta básica de fe: “¿Y ustedes quien dicen que soy yo?” Y cuando Pedro responde: “El
Mesías de Dios”, Jesús pide que se le siga con todas las consecuencias que el seguimiento de Cristo
acarrea. “Sí alguno quiere seguirme, que se niegue
a sí mismo, que cargue su cruz de cada día y que
me siga”.
El término Mesías se aplicó al rey, a los sacerdotes
que recibían la unción y al liberador prometido, el
Hijo de David. En tiempos de Jesús, todos esperaban la llegada de Dios, de su Enviado, del Mesías,
como un rey temporal. Por eso le cuesta a Jesús
reconocer este título, aunque al final de su vida admite el de Hijo de David. A su llegada, dados los
signos que hace, es difícil reconocer a Jesús como
Mesías. De ahí la interpelación de Cristo a sus discípulos en un momento evangélico: ¿Quién dicen
ustedes que soy yo?
Y nosotros ¿quién decimos que es Jesús?
Esta pregunta se la hace Jesús a los cristianos en
sus diferentes etapas de la vida. Probablemente,
todos hemos dado respuestas distintas. Así, Jesús es
el hombre para los demás, el Cristo de los milagros,
el Profeta revolucionario, el Redentor de los pecados, el Señor sacramentado, el Liberador del pueblo, etc. Recordemos que cada evangelista da una
imagen distinta y verdadera de Jesús. En definitiva,
como dicen las confesiones primitivas de fe: Jesús
es el Señor o el Cristo, Jesucristo.
La confesión de fe de Pedro va unida en Lucas a un
signo decisivo: la pasión y resurrección. A Cristo
se le reconoce en el momento de su muerte, crucificado por su tenor de vida. Pero se le reconoce, a su
vez, por su resurrección, ya que entregó su vida
como rescate por todos.
Es tan importante como saber quién es Jesucristo
para mí, como también es conocer quién soy yo
como cristiano.
El mensaje de la Palabra de Dios es que no somos
niños, no podemos ser niños en la fe, al contrario,
debemos alcanzar la madurez de la vida cristiana.
Ser niño es lindo, es gracioso, pero únicamente en
los primeros años. No es gracioso ser un niño de
cuarenta años. Y frecuentemente esto es lo que nos
sucede en la fe: hay el peligro de ser unos eternos
niños.
Nosotros ¿Manifestamos nuestra niñez?
Que somos niños en la fe lo manifestamos en nuestras actitudes. Por ejemplo, dependemos esclavamente de la ley para venir a misa los domingos.
Cuántos de nosotros estaríamos aquí si el papa dijera que ya no existe la ley de oír misa los domingos. ¿Venimos porque es mandato o porque nos
atrae Dios?
Otra actitud infantil de fe es esperar que el sacerdote haga las decisiones por nosotros en lugar de
aceptar esa responsabilidad. Dependemos del criterio del sacerdote. “Padre, ¿es pecado si evito los
hijos?” Padre, ¿es pecado si…? Y así hay más. Y
no es que sea malo pedir consejos y ser instruido,
pero si la vida cristiana no brota de convicciones
hondamente arraigadas y personales, vamos siempre a ser testigos de que una buena proporción de
católicos se divorcian, un gran número practican el
aborto y el noventa por ciento no se acercan al sacramento de la confesión.
Ser niño en la fe es vivir con el temor de que Dios
es un tirano y puede castigarnos. Este temor nos
lleva a vivir la religión como una práctica supersticiosa de ritos para sobornar a Dios. Otras veces
esperamos que Dios haga milagros mientras abandonamos nuestras responsabilidades.
Reflexión
La madurez de la fe exige algo más que evitar el pecado, es algo más que cumplir con
los mandamientos. La madurez cristiana es
algo positivo, es seguir a Cristo porque lo
amamos, porque él es nuestro camino,
nuestra verdad y nuestra Vida, porque él es

1921. It is a lay catholic organization
whose members are giving service to
the Church on a voluntary basis in almost
every country.
The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual
and social welfare of each individual. The
members participate in the life of the parish
through visitation of families, the sick, both
in their homes and in hospitals and through
collaboration in every apostolic and missionary undertaking sponsored by the parish.
The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a
praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting,
where prayer is intermingled with reports
and discussion.

parte II—REZAR EN EL LABERINTO
No hay manera correcta o incorrecta de caminar un laberinto. Se puede caminar rápidamente o lentamente, sigue a tu corazón. Antes de entrar, es

CONOZCA A DIACON CHETO & BETTY MENDOZA
Mi nombre es; Anacleto Mendoza, también me conocen como “Cheto”. Nací en
Guatemala en la ciudad de Huehuetenango, el 13 de julio de 1949. Estudié en Guatemala hasta la secundaria. El 15 de noviembre de 1970 me casé con mi bella esposa
Betty Dávila. En el ano1972 llegamos a Los Ángeles donde estuve 3 meses y migración me devolvió a mi país de Guatemala por ser ilegal. Luego me volví a venir. Llegamos a Nueva York donde vivimos por 13 años.
En mi país trabajé operando una maquina de fruta por 12 años, en Nueva York
operé una maquina cortadora de papel durante 13 años y en Los Ángeles trabajé por
un año en el correo. Mi ultimo trabajo fue de
operar una maquina de convertir papel
para computadoras y fotos por el
espacio de 27 años. Aunque he
trabajado por muchos años,
nunca me he sentido lleno y
realizado plenamente como
me siento hoy.
En Nueva York nacieron nuestras primeras
3 hijas, Marilyn, Jacqueline y Josephine. Pero
por cosas del destino me
volví a Los Ángeles en el
año del 1985 donde ya
llevamos 28 años de estar viviendo. Aquí fue donde nació nuestra
cuarta hija Ashley. Estamos muy agradecidos con Dios porque nos han dado 6 nietos,
una nieta y 2 yernos, que queremos con todo
nuestro corazón. Que bendición tengo para
poder seguir siendo un ejemplo para ellos,
especialmente para mis nietos. Gracias a
Dios nuestras 4 hijas son profesionales; una
es psicóloga, otra es maestra, otra tiene su
bachelors en química y la última está estudiando para sus masters en USC para asistencia social. Estamos muy agradecidos con
Dios porque ellas se dejaron llevar por nosotros y están involucradas en los ministerios
de la iglesia.
En el 2008 sentí el llamado y entramos a formar parte del programa para Diacones de Los Ángeles. Este año me retiré pa-
ra servirle a Dios mejor. Me Ordené de Diacono el 8 de junio 2013. Me siento muy contento y agradecido con Dios por haberme
elegido y ser el primer Diacono hispano en
la comunidad hispano, pero para
nosotros inglés, filipino y hispano
es solo una comunidad y estoy
aquí para servirles a todos. Desde
niño he creído que existe un Dios
creador del mundo, mi fe ha
ido creciendo y madurando
a través del caminar de mi
vida donde a estado la
presencia de Dios.

BETTY MENDOZA
Estos 5 años no fueron
fáciles porque tuvimos muchos obstáculos pero gracias
a Dios llegamos mi esposa y
yo. Yo como su esposa me siento muy feliz
que el allá escuchado el llamado, lo principal
que él lo escucho y le doy gracias a Dios por
permitirnos trabajar para él y para todos
nuestros hermanos en cristo. A pesar de que
hemos cumplido 25 años de servicio en esta
parroquia estamos muy contentos de continuar nuestro servicio como un pareja diaconar para servir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en nuestra comunidad. La ultima cosa que podremos dice es que Dios nos ha dado muchas bendiciones pero esta es la más
grande.
Le damos gracias a toda la comunidad de
Santa Margarita María por la bienvenida
que nos dieron.

MEET DEACON CHETO and BETTY MENDOZA

My name is Anacleto Mendoza. I am also known as “Cheto”. I was born in Guatemala in the city of Huehuetenango on July 13, 1949. I studied in Guatemala until
junior high school. On November 15, 1970 I married my beautiful wife Betty Davila. In 1972, we arrived in Los Angeles. Three months later I was seized by immigration and returned to Guatemala. Then I found a way to return. We moved and
arrived in New York where we lived for 13 years.
In Guatemala I worked operating a fruit machine for 12 years. In New York I operated as a
machine paper cutter for 13 years and
worked in Los Angeles for a year in the
post office. My last job was to operate
a machine to convert computer paper and photos. I did this for 27
years. Although I have worked
for many years, I’ve never felt
fully content and realized
how different I feel today.
In New York, our first 3
daughters were born: Marilyn, Jacqueline and Josephine. Fate had other plans
for me and we returned to
Los Angeles in 1985. We
have lived in Los Angeles
for 28 years and it is the birthplace of our
fourth daughter, Ashley. We are very thankful
to God because we have been given 6 grandchildren whom we love with all our hearts.
What a blessing it is for us to continue to be
an example for our family, especially our
grandchildren. We thank God that our 4
daughters are professionals, one is a psychologist, one is a teacher, one is a chemist and the
last one is studying for her masters in Social
Work at the University of Southern California.
We are very thankful to God because they
have been influenced by us and are involved
in the ministries of the church.
In 2008 I felt the call from God and entered
into the program for Deacons of Los Angeles.
This year I retired from my job because of
health reasons and to better serve God. I was
ordained a Deacon on June 8, 2013. I
am very happy and thankful to God
for choosing me to be the first Hispanic Deacon for our Hispanic community. I strongly believe that the
English, Filipino and Hispanic
individuals are all one community whom I am here to serve.
As a child I believed in a
God that created the world.
Now over the years my faith
has grown and matured
through the journey of my
life. These past five years were
not easy because we experienced so many obstacles but
thanks to God, my wife and I were able make
this accomplishment real.
A NOTE FROM BETTY MENDOZA
As Cheto’s wife I am very happy that he
heard God’s calling and I thank God for allowing us to work for him. Although we have
completed 25 years of service at this parish we
are very happy to continue our service as a
Deacon couple to serve our brothers and sisters in our community. In closing, we say that
God has given us many blessings but this is
the grandest and we thank the entire community of Saint Margaret Mary for all the support
they have given us.
