In light of the huge discoveries over the one who introduced himself at the

100’s of Santa’s will be seen dashing
around King’s Lynn’s ‘The Walks’ on
Saturday 7th December as they take
part in The Norfolk Hospice’s annual
Santa Dash. It is hoped that this year’s
event will grow on the previous year’s
success and raise thousands pounds for
the charity.
The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House
delivers specialist palliative care
services to patients, and their families,
with long term medical conditions, as
well as those patients nearing the end
of their lives.
The Norfolk Hospice helps each patient
to live life to the full, every day, no
matter how many days a person may
have left. The services are available
through Day Therapy at the Hospice or
through the use of the Hospice at
Home service, or through a limited
number of in-patient beds.
Support is available to patients from 18
years of age, and the clinical
relationship which the Norfolk Hospice
has developed with children’s hospice
services means its staff is able to assist
young people suffering from life
threatening illnesses as they make the
transition through their teenage years
to adulthood.
This is the hospice’s third Santa Dash,
which last year attracted lots of Santa’s
and elves who dashed (and strolled)
around the King’s Lynn park and raised
over £2500 for the Snettisham based
charity. It is hoped that this year’s
event will grow on the previous year’s
success and raise thousands pounds for
the charity.
The dash is open to anyone of any age
and ability – a 1.5km dash can be
undertaken by anyone who feels that
5km is a bit too far to be dashing and
dashing is not essential – a slow gentle
walk may prefer.
Registration for the dash can be completed in the following ways
1. Online – wwww.norfolkhospice.org.uk
2. By picking up a registration form from any of the Hospice shops
3. By calling 01485 542891
Registration costs £10 per adult and £5 for under 16’s. Children under 5’s are
FREE! Under 16’s are invited to dress in festive costume.
The Santa Dash will start at 11am with Santa’s needing to sign in from 10.15.
Statistics state that 80 -100 in-patient beds are needed per one million of the
population. With around 300,000 people living in North and West Norfolk, this
equates to a need for 30 beds. A big step forward in reaching this target will be
achieved when the Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House completes the construction of
its new purpose designed and built facility at Hillington, near Kings Lynn in Spring
2014.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning;
was hosted at Spotty Pig Farm this
year
following
months
of
preparation by Marjorie & Alby
Peach and their team of helpers.
Our field was transformed into a
sea of gazebos which housed the
raffle, tombola, plants, cakes, BBQ,
Bric-A-Brac, pottery painting and
not forgetting the Kings Lynn Band
who so very kindly donated their
time to entertain us. Our animals
greeted the visitors and were
happy to be fussed all day.
It was a delightful day and we were
so touched by the generosity of
everybody who supported the
event with their donations of time,
cakes, jams and so much more.
Your efforts on the day and over
the past year has raised an amazing
£1246.91 so a huge thank you goes
out to you all.
We would like to offer special
thanks too to all the local
businesses who donated raffle
prizes namely: Alpha Hair Studio,
Spragg’s Garage, The Old Bell,
Grimston Stores, Milton Butcher,
The Anvil, and Sunnyside Vets.
I am sure you will all join me in
congratulating Marjorie and Albert
on the amazing fundraising they
have worked so hard to achieve
over the years. They have
however, set the bar very high and
we feel we shall have very large
footsteps to fill in the future.
We look forward to welcoming
you all again next year.
Theresa & James

As we move towards the
excitement of Christmas, we are
keeping focussed on continuing to
improve our school. One of Her
Majesty’s Inspectors came to visit in
November and she was pleased
with our progress since Ofsted
visited in July 2013.
READING: Part of our work is to
help the children to learn to read to
a very high standard and we are
raising the quality of the books on
offer in the library with a
considerable spend on lots of new,
lovely books. We will also be
making sure that the children read
as often as possible and the older,
more able readers have a chance to
join a reading group that discusses
an agreed book, sharing their views
and discussing the authors’ choices
of word and style.
MORE VOLUNTEERS: We are
encouraging volunteers to join us in
our task and we are delighted
because our team is growing –
thank you for all the help we are
receiving as the children benefit so
much from the time, care and
commitment. A first for Holly
Meadows, the community Library
Van is going to visit the school so
that all our pupils and their families
can have a chance to choose books
from there – how lucky are we?!
DICKENS AT CHRISTMAS:
this year we have a number of
classes studying the Victorians and,
of course, that lends itself to a
performance
of
Dickens’
A
Christmas Carol just before the end
of the term. We are enjoying
working with talented Performing
Arts staff from Springwood High
School who are helping us with our
acting and singing. It promises to be
a performance to remember and
we hope that the audience will
enjoy it as much as we have
preparing.
AMBASSADORS & Year 6s:
Have you ever had to lead a
meeting or give a presentation?
Could you have done it at 10 or 11
years old? Our Ambassadors and
Year 6s have been leading our
assemblies and Collective Worship.
They are amazing and so good that
the children give them spontaneous
applause! Teachers rarely get that
so you will understand how good
they are and how proud we are of
them. Well done to all of them!
BEST WISHES: All the children
and staff would like me to wish each
of you a very Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year. Thank you to
all those who have supported us in
any way and we hope to be able to
welcome you into our school in
2014.

Headteacher, December 2013

QEH MATTERS
You will have seen much media
coverage recently concerning the
issues identified at the QEH by the
Trust’s regulators. The Trust is
taking these matters very seriously
and you can read more about how
they are addressing the issues on the
Trust website; www.qehkl.nhs.uk.
The inspectors felt it was a good
hospital with some areas where
things weren’t right. The Trust is
putting plans in place to improve
these and they will be arranging
‘listening events’ for patients and the
public to let people know how they
are progressing. A new executive
team have been brought in to
oversee these changes. The Interim
Chairman, David Dean, states that it
is a safe hospital with some very
committed staff and the issues with
the quality side can be sorted out
very quickly.
Recent changes
Nursing staff
More nurses are being employed.
Staffing levels on the wards are
reviewed twice a day to ensure
there is 1 nurse for 8 patients during
the day
Ophthalmology
The outpatient team have been
working to improve patients
experience by changing the way they
work. Historically most patients
have had to attend the QEH on
several separate occasions to have
tests done prior to seeing their
consultant. In the new One-Stop
clinics, patients are given one
appointment to see the consultant
and any tests are now done at this
visit. This may mean that some
patients will need to be in the
department longer, but they will only
have to attend once. Eye patients are
also being asked to enter by the
Rehabilitation
entrance
where
eventually there will be new
reception area.
Urology
This service is also being moved in
December to the old Feltwell ward.
Outpatient clinics and day surgery
will take place here, so concentrating
specialist clinical care in one area and
creating space in main outpatients.
Ambulatory
Emergency
Care
Some walking patients attend A&E
who require tests but not
necessarily a bed for the night. To
improve the flow of emergency
patients, a 6 week pilot study took
place covering 524 patients who
fulfilled certain criteria. They were
escorted to a bay in MAU where the
beds had been replaced with 3
trolleys and 7 chairs. Here they
were able to have any necessary
tests or scans done immediately,
treatment initiated and most were
then sent home. Only 30 patients
required admission to hospital. In
December this service will be
extended to 9am – 7pm and made
permanent I hope this will put your
mind at rest to know that the QEH
is a safe place to visit although it
continues to face a challenging future
to deliver high quality services to
meet
growing
patient
needs
alongside tight funding.

Prayer for the Month
Heavenly Father, as we prepare once again to celebrate Christmas, we thank
you for sending us your only son to bring us your message of peace, joy and
love. We ask for your blessing on our families and friends, that we may meet
together in fellowship, goodwill and harmony.
At a time when we are blessed with so many of your gifts, we pray for those
who may be lonely, hungry, sad or unwell. Finally Lord, we remember with
gratitude our loved ones no longer with us, now safe in your keeping. Amen
Praying For You
If you would like church members to
join you in your prayer for a concern
you have, you might like to note it
down on a ‘prayer-leaf’ on the prayer
tree in Grimston Church, normally
open each day until at least 4pm.
This month church members will be
remembering in prayer the people
who live in Low Road, Congham and
Grimston, Hawthorn Avenue and
Bracken
Way
Community Orchard.

The Fen and Allotment Trust has
allocated a plot of land that the
Trust hopes to turn into a new

of all parishioners. This new
project is planned for 2014 and we
could do with some helping hands
to get the land cleared, trees planted
and looked after in the early stages.

involved in the planning or could
help out practically then please

Grimston Fen and Allotment Trust
Winter Fuel Grants.
Every winter the Trust allocates a set
amount of money to give out to those in
need within the parish. Usually, but not
always, this money is given to the
elderly. This year the Trustees are asking
that if you wish to be considered for a
grant you should fill in the slip below and
return it to our Clerk by 31st December.
All previous recipients of the money will
need to re-apply.
If you wish you may apply on someone
else’s behalf, if you think they should
receive the money. All applications
received will be considered and treated
in the strictest confidence. The Trust’s
charity fund is a fixed sum and will be
shared out equally between all successful
applicants and the money delivered
towards
the
end
of
January.

Incinerator update
The incinerator came incredibly close
to defeat at County Hall in October;
but the acceptance of Cory
Wheelabrator’s Revised Project Plan
means it will limp on for a while
longer.
The closeness of the decision shows
how vulnerable the project is. NCC
officers
claimed
the
‘Willows’
incinerator would save money but
they only compared it to landfill. In
practice if waste is not sent to Cory
Wheelabrator it wont go to landfill
either. Two independent reports for
the County Council identified surplus
capacity already available to take all
Norfolk’s waste for around £30 per
tonne less than Cory Wheelabrator
would
charge.
Under
the
circumstances it is nonsense to
suggest Cory Wheelabrator would
save Norfolk anything. Even greater
savings could be made from recycling
based proposals. Norfolk cannot
afford to pay a premium rate price for
a second rate incinerator, this is
especially
true
without
the
Government subsidising it. NCC’s
officers have submitted so much
misleading ‘information’ to DEFRA to
get PFI money it should have come as
no surprise when they lost it. The
Planning ‘need’ argument for the
‘Willows’ has weakened substantially
since the inquiry closed its doors.
With sustained pressure from more
letters, defeating the incinerator looks
26
like an increasingly achievable goal.
The
National
Audit
Office
investigation into the Norfolk Waste
procurement came as welcome news.
With the Government now saying the
‘Willows’ is not needed, it will be
interesting to see if it impacts upon
Lloyds and The Royal Bank of Scotland
who are the UK financial backers of
the ‘Willows’. According to the
Report and Financial Statements of
The Willows Power & Recycling
Holdings Ltd Year ending 31st
December 2012 “Ernst and Young LLP
resigned as auditors of the group
during the year”. It would be very
interesting to know why, because no
explanation was given. In May 2013
election promises were made to
‘make good’ the democratic deficit;
unfortunately the new Cabinet is
better at serving NCC’s officers than
the electorate. No amount of political
window dressing can make up for
65,500 votes being ignored.

GRIMSTON & DISTRICT GOOD COMPANIONS
On Saturday, 19th October. Chairman
Nick Smith, welcomed everybody and
introduced Mrs Valerie Blackmur, who
had brought along some mystifying
objects for the Antiques Quiz. There
was a competition to identify them. She
also brought along a few items, which
were a mystery to her! There was a
quiz to identify some old coins, some
of which had been forgotten even by
our oldest members, and tot up the
total sum.
Mrs Blackmur was an
entertaining speaker and the quizzes
were a lot of fun.
Tea was provided by the youth group
Rock Solid and their representatives
Ellen & Charles Scott, Jasmine Grimes
and Jan Wilson brought along tasty
sandwiches, cheese scones and bowls
of crisps together with little cakes
enthusiastically decorated by the
children. Ann and Margaret were in
the kitchen helping with the chores.
Members would like to thank everyone
who contributed to a very pleasant
afternoon.
At the meeting on Saturday, 16th
November, Club members Christine
Brook and Barbara Andrews will help
members to make Christmas and
Birthday cards.
The W.I. will be
providing the tea.
The Christmas Party will be on
Saturday. 21st December, when
members are asked to bring a single
Christmas card and a wrapped
Christmas gift. There will be a
buffet tea provided by the
Committee.
The meeting on 18th January will be a
Games and Chat afternoon, with no
speaker.
The Annual Lunch will be at the Anvil
on Saturday, 15th February.
If you would like to join the Good
Companions Club for the over60’s, please contact Nick Smith on
