Reading and Math Jackals Challenge a total success!
READ AND SCORCE WITH THE
JACKALS PROGRAM this year has reached
new heights! Thanks to JORDAN
PIETRUS, from the Elmira Jackals, along
with Ms. Bryant helped to encourage students to read more at home, answer and create math word
problems. Ms. Bryant and Mrs. Sotero have received many letters from CS parents thanking them for
the impact the reading & math program has made on their child. Students loving to read; that is exactly
what the CS team hoped the program would encourage! Thank you to the Elmira Jackals for coming to
play hockey with our students, provide them with signed banners and stickers!

BUILDING DOORS WILL BE LOCKED
As part of the District-wide security system and our emphasis on safety, the building doors will be locked during the day.
Both of the main lobby entrance doors have a white box. Please push the button, wait for a response and you will be
buzzed into the building. We may ask you to look toward the camera or identify yourself by speaking into the white box.
Once you enter the building, please report directly to the office to sign in and pick up a visitor’s badge.
Visitors to the Schools – to maintain a safe place for our children to work and learn, certain limits
must be set for visits by parents and other agencies. For these reasons, the following rules apply to
ALL visitors to the school.
Access to the elementary building will be through the main entrance ONLY. This entrance will be open for
students and visitors from 8:00 - 2:25 PM.
ALL VISITORS ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN IN AT THE MAIN OFFICE IMMEDIATELY UPON ENTERING THE BUILDING TO RECEIVE A VISITOR’S PASS WHICH MUST BE
WORN AT ALL TIMES WHILE IN THE SCHOOL OR ON THE SCHOOL GROUNDS.
Also, as parents arrive in the morning with children, please remain in the lobby area, children must learn to
proceed to the room on their own.
Teachers are expected NOT to take class time to discuss individual matters with visitors.
Visitors attending school functions that are open to the public such as parent teacher organization (PTO)
meetings or public gatherings are not required to register.
Any consumables (food, beverages, etc.) brought in by visitors are subject to search and / or inspection .
Please note these district rules are approved by the Horseheads Board of Education. These safety procedures need your
support. If you have any questions regarding these procedures, please call the office. Thank you in advance for your help
and support with keeping safety a priority
GUIDELINES FOR CLASSROOM PARTIES / CELEBRATIONS
If bringing food to your child’s class such as drinks, cakes or pastries, the following guidelines should be used:

 Immediately after cooking, if possible, items should be wrapped individually (i.e. cookies, muffins,
cupcakes, etc.).
 The Chemung County Health department makes these additional requests:

parental consent are necessary. Any medication should be brought in the original container to the health office where it will be stored

Dear Parent (s) / Caregiver (s),
Happy New Year to you and your family!
New Year is a time to look back and a time to dream for the future. Reflection is powerful, it allows
time to evaluate, appreciate, and generate. Things have gone well for us in recent months, some
would say very well. Everyone in our community has a lot to be proud of, and as we continue to work
together, our children at Center Street succeed.
We look ahead to 2014 and the many fantastic opportunities it affords us. As we continue our
successful character education program, our word of the month is FAIRNESS. Our theme for this
month is always fairness for all. Fairness is being open-minded and listening to others. Eleanor
Roosevelt said, “It is not fair to ask of someone else what you are not willing to do
yourself.”
I look forward to all the inspiring things we will be working on to better our school, community, and
the world. The Student Council has outstanding plans for the students at Center Street to participate
in for the entire building to enjoy. The most exciting news of all is that our students are leading us by
example!

The Good Apple Award is a tool to promote pride, self-esteem and positive character development. All faculty
and staff nominate students exhibiting good character. At the end of each month, the principal will announce the
recipients names, and will present the students with their award during their scheduled lunch time. A bulletin
board is in the Main Lobby to display each month’s recipients. The following students earned a good apple
award for showing exceptional character during this month.
The following students received Good Apple Award Certificates for December.

Reading is important to learning, and it allows us to laugh, travel, and pass through different
time zones without even leaving our seats. Mrs. Sotero enjoys listening to the children read to
her each and every week whether it is a new book the students read or a story they wrote
themselves. The students then receive a blue ribbon from Mrs. Sotero - “Super Star Student.”
The World’s Largest Kids’ Art Museum
Dear Parents,
If you have not yet opened your child's online art gallery through Artsonia.com,
please do so. Mrs. Spencer has been consistently uploading artwork to our
student’s individual galleries. It is a great way to support your school while
expressing your family’s appreciation of your child's artwork. Registration slips are
being sent home monthly for parents who have not yet opened their child's account.
Once opened, all you need to do is Google Artsonia, type in Center Street, and your
child's first name in the appropriate places. You only need the assigned password on
Also, please note the art room continuously is in need of egg cartons.
Thank you so much and have a great holiday!!! Mrs. Klossner
