San Antonio is a city of millions of people; however, there
is a single person that literally
is one in a million. Meet Betina
Vega: the first San Antonian to
teach braille piano music. For
several months now, Betina
has taught a 12-year-old blind
student how to play the piano
and read music.
Contrary to popular belief,
it is possible for the visually
impaired to read music and play
an instrument just as well as a
person without any disabilities.
Many times, these people can
play better than those who are
able to read a piece of music
with their eyes, because they are
required to memorize their music, opposed to just glancing at
a paper and deciding to practice

Earlier this week at Geekdom,
the San Antonio Convention
& Visitors Bureau (SACVB)
unveiled a new and vastly improved website at visitsanantonio.com packed with today’s
latest technology. What’s more,
SACVB is one of the first among
convention and visitors bureaus
to rollout a website integrating
the latest tech along with social
data and networking tools to
create a bespoke travel experience for guests as early as the
planning phase.
The idea behind the trans-
formed website is to provide a
highly personalized website that
will make a terrific first impression – and make it even easier
for guests to find the information
about San Antonio that’s most
relevant to them.
“Our site is often a potential
visitor’s first impression of San
Antonio and we want to make
it a memorable one,” noted
SACVB Executive Director
Casandra Matej. “San Antonio is
a destination that has something
for everyone, from an amazing
culinary scene, to family attractions, to a remarkable history
and culture. We want to take
this opportunity to maximize

La Prensa Foundation gives $10,000 to St. Mary’s University

editor-in-chief are at it again!
Just last week, the foundation
donated to Texas A&M–San
Antonio and this past Wednesday, the dynamic duo visited
the prestigious St. Mary’s University campus and left a generous donation of $10,000 to the
newest President, Thomas M.
Mengler, J.D.
Mengler welcomed the Duran
family and was delighted to hear
that Mr. Duran was a graduate
of the university. Mr. Duran is
a former alumnus of the school
holds a very special place in his
heart for it. He graduated with
his Master’s degree in Political
Science in 1965.
“We really appreciate the
support,” Thomas M Mengler,
J.D. and president of St. Mary’s
University said. “It’s wonderful
to return to your roots and give
something back.”
Thanks to the La Prensa
Foundation, many students who
wouldn’t be able to get through
school due to monetary issues
have had the opportunity to
do so. Here’s too many, many
more years of this wonderful
family!

Dirigentes que no pueden dirigir

Enrique Peña Nieto, el presidente de México, y el presidente
Nicolás Maduro, de Venezuela,
tienen algo en común: millones
de sus compatriotas creen que
ganaron con trampa las pasadas
elecciones y, por lo tanto, consideran que sus presidencias son
ilegítimas.
Esta falla de origen ha marcado
los gobiernos de Peña Nieto y de
Maduro. Por eso, muchas de sus
acciones están destinadas a tratar
de demostrar que sí se merecen el
puesto y la autoridad que tienen.
En México, aunque muchos
no estén de acuerdo todavía, el
debate sobre la legitimidad de
Peña Nieto ha ido pasando a
segundo plano.
Ya es noticia vieja las acusaciones de que usó muchos más recursos que sus contrincantes para
ganar la elección. Y la reciente
visita del presidente Barack
Obama a México – aunque exprés
y hasta apresurada – le da el visto
bueno a Peña Nieto y le permite
concentrarse en otras cosas.
Pero nada, en realidad, ha
cambiado en México. El número
de muertos por la narcoviolencia
durante los primeros cuatro meses de Peña Nieto es casi idéntico
al de los últimos cuatro meses del
gobierno de su predecesor, Felipe
Calderón.
La economía no se ha disparado y millones de mexicanos
siguen pensando en irse del país.
Lo que sí ha cambiado, sin embargo, es el mensaje.
Peña Nieto y los funcionarios
de su gobierno rara vez hablan
públicamente de la violencia, lo
que constituye una importante
ruptura con las prácticas de su
predecesor.
México sigue siendo un país
en el que los barones de la droga
controlan amplias franjas de
territorio y tienen el poder y la
influencia para matar indiscriminadamente, sin consecuencia
alguna. Pero el cambio en la estrategia de comunicación oficial
quiere hacer creer que el país ya
cambio. Y eso no es cierto.
Varios medios de comunicación, tanto en México como
en el extranjero, han comprado
y publicado la historia oficial (la
que dice que México no es el de
la violencia sino el del desarrollo
económico). Pero este mensaje
se va a desinflar pronto si no hay
resultados concretos en la lucha
contra la narcoviolencia. Los
muertos siempre huelen y no se
pueden ocultar.
El caso de Venezuela es muy
distinto pero también lo protagoniza un presidente, Maduro, que
lucha por justificar su poder. Fue
designado como candidato por
Hugo Chávez, por dedazo y poco
antes de morir en marzo, y la
oposición ha impugnado la elección que él asegura haber ganado.
Pero es imposible creer en
un sistema en que el organismo
que cuenta los votos y el jefe
del ejército apoya al candidato
oficialista. Por eso se resisten
a mostrar las actas de votación.
Para empeorar las cosas, la principal estrategia de Maduro para
ganarse a los votantes es imitar
a Chávez siempre cuando habla
en público. Maduro hace declaraciones grandilocuentes. Grita.
Menosprecia y vitupera a sus
rivales, tal como hacía su jefe.
Es vergonzoso. Y con cada actua
ción queda más claro que si bien
Maduro heredó la presidencia de
Chávez, no heredó su habilidad
política. Maduro, comparado con
Chávez, es un presidente muy
chiquito. El problema es muy
sencillo: la elección no le dio
legitimidad; al contrario, lo presentó como cómplice del fraude,
pocos creen lo que dice, tiene un
país dividido a la mitad y está
enfrentando una seria crisis de
gobernabilidad. La oposición le
aguantó muchas cosas a Chávez.
Pero Maduro no es Chávez.
Los problemas de Peña Nieto y
de Maduro para ejercer el poder
me remiten inmediatamente al
nuevo libro de Moises Naim, “El
Fin del Poder”.
Naim argumenta que el poder
ya no es lo que era antes. Es más
difícil alcanzarlo y más fácil
perderlo, me dijo Naim en una
entrevista en Miami.
Peña Nieto no tiene la autoridad y la fuerza que caracterizó a
los presidentes priístas de 1929
al 2000.
Maduro no es ni la sombra
de Chávez (aunque se llame su
“hijo”) ni tiene el dominio del
país que presumieron adecos y
copeyanos durante cuatro décadas. (La misma pérdida de poder
ha ocurrido con corporaciones,
iglesias y otras instituciones,
explica Naim, y se está relocalizando en calles, redes sociales
y grupos de insurgentes que
cuestionan fuertemente la autoridad tradicional utilizando
las nuevas tecnologías y mucha
creatividad).
Es decir, Peña Nieto y Madu
ro, además de enfrentar serios
problemas de legitimidad debido
a procesos electorales sumamente
irregulares, lideran presidencias
muy debilitadas en contextos
adversos.
Ambos luchan fuertemente
para no ser vistos como minipresidentes. Cuando millones
no le creen al presidente, cuando
suponen que ganó con trampa,
cuando cuestionan su capacidad
para dirigir, entonces la tarea de
gobernar es monumental y los
países sufren.
La única manera de salir ade
lante de semejante aprieto – y de
callar a los críticos como yo – es
demostrar con acciones y resultados que sí pueden gobernar.
Mientras esto se define, México y Venezuela (tristemente) han
puesto en pausa su futuro.

The Stress Nexus, more than food for thought

The Stress Nexus, the interconnectivity between water, energy
and food, is not a concept we hear
discussed often, but acknowledging its existence is necessary to
understand the seriousness of our
water needs.
A study by the International
Water Association notes that agriculture uses 70 percent of the
world’s water to irrigate 20 percent
of the world’s cropland in order to
produce 40 percent of the world’s
food. In the United States, the energy sector withdraws 40 percent
of the nation’s water to cool power
plants and fuel turbines.
In the face of a growing population, rapid urbanization, and limited
access to diminishing natural resources, it’s imperative that we embrace a progressive shift in the way
that we think about how to ensure
future security in these three areas.
Fortunately, the state’s leadership
came to Austin in January prepared
to tackle this challenge head on, and
finally put together a solution to our
water crisis that would address the
Stress Nexus and prepare Texas for
the 80 percent population increase
we’re expected to see by 2060.
Governor Perry, Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst and Speaker Straus
each expressed their commitment to
bolstering our water supply early
on. House Natural Resources Chairman Allan Ritter worked hard to
bring forward a solution in the form
of HB 4 and HB 11. These bills
were developed to create a water
infrastructure bank that will loan
money to local entities, at much
lower rates than they could get on
the open market, to build projects
that will ensure every community
in Texas has the water it needs for
the future.
HB 4, the bill that set up the
framework for the State Water
Infrastructure Fund, passed both
the House and Senate early in the
Session, signaling the Legislature’s
commitment to fixing our water
predicament. However, when it
came time for the Texas House to
fund the solution proposed in HB
4, it appears some let politics get in
the way of fixing a major problem
facing our state.
HB 11 would take $2 billion from
the state’s Economic Stabilization
Fund, also known as the “rainy
day fund,” to provide the seed
money for the water infrastructure
bank that will fund these low interest loans. Due in large part to the
booming oil and gas industry, the
rainy day fund contains nearly $12
billion. Using just 15 percent of
this fund to address one of the most
vital needs of our state should be a
no brainer.
As the House began to move this
proposal forward, it became clear
that a contingent of the membership
was intent on holding water funding
for ransom in exchange for more
education money.
Despite the House’s commitment
to funding education--in the form of
a $5 billion increase over last session--and fully funding Medicaid,
these members imprudently killed
HB 11 using a procedural tool.
The Republicans in the House
have worked in good faith with
the Democrats to make education
a top priority this Session. While
adequately funding education is a
major goal of this Legislature, so
should be addressing our water
crisis.
The Democrats in the house are
risking all of the gains in education
and healthcare they realized through
negotiations with the Republicans
by attempting to stop us from accessing the rainy day fund, unless
they are allowed to sweeten their
top two priorities even more. This
is undermining the unprecedented
bipartisan cooperation we have seen
over the first 4 months of the session
and, frankly, it is bad for Texas.
Without water we will stop attracting jobs to Texas and severely
limit food supplies. Providing education, healthcare and water funding are all major responsibilities of
the Legislature, but they shouldn’t
be competing priorities. Rather,
members of the Legislature can and
should work together to achieve all
of these worthy objectives.
With the clock running out on
the 83rd Legislative Session, we
can’t afford to put politics ahead
of providing for our state’s most
critical needs.
Governor for a Day
State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte
Fifty years ago, I was a little
girl who got scolded by a teacher
for speaking Spanish during
recess.
Only six years earlier, San Antonio’s Henry B. Gonzalez had
just become the first MexicanAmerican elected to the Texas
Senate in the 20th century. And
the election of the first woman
of color in the Senate, Barbara
Jordan, was still four years away.
Before Jordan, only three women
had ever served in the Senate.
After Barbara Jordan, it would
take another 20 years to elect the
first Latina - my dear friend Judith
Zaffirini.
At the time, the odds of little
Leticia Rosa San Miguel becoming Governor of Texas didn’t look
too rosy.
In fact, being a politician,
much less Governor, wasn’t even
among my goals as a child. Since
I was little, I wanted to be a pharmacist, like my grandfather, Don
Daniel San Miguel.
But I’ve been blessed with an
even greater service in the Texas
Legislature — the chance to reach
and help not just hundreds, but
hundreds of thousands of people
in Senate District 26, and almost
26 million across this great state.
I had a lot of help getting here
— my parents, my wonderful
husband, my children, my colleagues, and my staff all made
this possible.
The image of Texas is of cowboys - vaqueros - fighting to
tame a wild frontier. But now we
have a 21st century powerhouse
economy. Our small town past
steadily changed into a high-rise
present.
Although Tejanos such as Lorenzo de Zavala and Juan Seguin
fought for Texas independence,
the Republic was mostly Anglo.
Today, every news reporter covering Texas politics writes about
demographic change. Our Texas
today would be barely recognizable to its founders.
We’ll continue to change - I
believe for the better. So many
people who previously would
have been denied their dreams
now have them within reach.
Immigrants have always sought
a better life here. This is important
to me personally - although I’m
a proud 7th-generation Texan
on the San Miguel side, both
my grandmothers were born in
Mexico. That’s why I sponsored
the Texas Dream Act in 2001,
allowing our Texas students the
opportunity to succeed in college.
There are still some people
waiting to fully enjoy their life
and rights as Texans. Let me tell
you about one of them.
As Chair of the Senate Veteran
Affairs and Military Installations
Committee, I was blessed to meet
Staff Sergeant Eric Alva. In 2003,
this San Antonio native became
the first Marine to be seriously
injured in the Iraq War, when he
stepped on a land mine and lost
his right leg.
He fought for you. He very
nearly died for our country, and
still suffers for it every day. And
yet, here in his home state, he can
be denied or fired from a job just
because he is gay. A man who
protects this country is not protected at home — discriminated
against because of who he loves.
I realize what it means to say
that in Texas. Texas first President, Sam Houston, stood up for
Native Americans, who at that
time were considered savages. He
said, “I am aware that in presenting myself as the advocate of the
Indians and their rights, I shall
stand very much alone.” He did
it because he knew it was right.
Look at some of the other portraits in this chamber. Over there
is a painting of Barbara Jordan.
Back there is a painting of San
Antonio’s own Henry B. Gonzalez. At one time, it would have
been unthinkable that paintings
honoring an African-American
and a Mexican-American would
adorn these hallowed walls.
Someday on these walls there
will be a portrait of Texas hero
who just happens to be gay - because it won’t matter.
Think about the bravery it
took to create this state. Also
think about the bravery it took to
change this state. Today, you are
building the future of Texas. It
will again take bravery.

Mother’s Day 2013
celebrations vary
What can one write on Mother’s Day that hasn’t already
been written? What can one
say on Mother’s Day that hasn’t
been said? Very little, honestly!
Mother’s Day has been
around in this country since
the early 1900s and celebrates
mothers, motherhood, maternal
bonds and how society is influenced its mothers.
How one celebrates Mother’s
Day varies. In the Latino culture an accepted tradition is
the mariachi serenata. Most
families gather for day-long
celebrations that involve families and their extended families.
At Sunday church services
flowers are given. In some
they’re roses and others carnations. The red rose or carnation
recognizes that your mother is
still with you. The white rose
or carnation signifies that your
mother is with her maker.
We cannot forget the benefits
of the greeting cards we get for
Mother’s Day. There’s one for
just about any woman who is or
looked upon as a mother.
Mother’s Day is seen as a
special day however for whatever reason not much time is
spent in the gift giving area.
The creativity is lacking, for the
most part. Even the traditional
mariachi serenata didn’t require
much thought. The most difficult part of that mission is finding a mariachi that hasn’t been
booked and is still available for
that early morning honor.
There is one faction of Latinos whose Mother’s Day cel-
ebrations will be different from
yours. They’re the DREAMERs whose mothers have been
deported.
While other spent the week
before Mother’s Day looking
for something to give mom,
this group of individuals was in
Washington for a meeting with
the Congressional Hispanic
Caucus. They were hoping to
move the Immigration Reform
issue towards approval.
Remember that the DREAMERs have been separated from
their mothers, not by choice,
but by the immigration system’s broken process. Too
many of them have seen one
or both parents deported. This
deportation process has and
continues to break up families
and at times like Mother’s Day
the separation is really felt.
At this point the only way
the DREAMERs can spend
Mother’s Day with their moms
is through the use of Skype,
thanks to United We Dream.
This group is in the forefront
in the protest of these separations and they want to expand
the “right to reunite” waiver
provision in the Immigration
Reform Senate measure.
This Mother’s Day as you and
yours celebrate with your mom,
keep the DREAMERs in mind.
Also sometime throughout the
day remember this Hebrew
Proverb, “God could not be
everywhere and therefore he
made mothers.”

Las celebraciones
del Día de las Madres
2013 son variadas
¿Qué puede escribir uno
acerca del Día de las Madres
que no se haya escrito ya? ¿Qué
puede decir uno sobre el Día de
las Madres que ya se ha dicho?
Honestamente, muy poco.
El Día de las Madres ha
existido en este país desde
principios de los años 1900s y
celebra a las mamás, a la maternidad, los lazos maternales
y cómo la sociedad ha influido
en sus madres.
La manera como uno celebra
el Día de las Madres varía. En
la cultura latina, una tradición
aceptable es la serenata con
mariachi. La mayoría de las
familias se reúnen para celebraciones que duran todo el día y
que incluyen a familias y a sus
familias extendidas.
Durante los servicios religiosos del domingo se regalan
flores. En algunas son rosas y
en otras son claveles. La rosa
o clavel rojo reconoce que su
madrecita todavía está con
ustedes. La rosa o clavel blanco
significa que su madrecita ya se
encuentra con el Creador.
No podemos olvidar los bene
ficios de las tarjetas de felicitación que compramos para el
Día de las Madres. Hay una para
casi todas las mujeres que son
madres o que son vistas como
una madre.
El Día de las Madres es visto
como un día especial, sin embargo, por alguna razón no se
pasa mucho tiempo en la parte
de regalar. Por la mayor parte
hay una falta de creatividad.
Hasta la tradicional serenata
de mariachi no requiere de
mucho pensamiento. La parte
más difícil de esa misión es
encontrar un mariachi que no
se haya reservado ya y que esté
disponible para el temprano
reconocimiento matutino.
Hay una fracción de latinos
cuyas celebraciones del Día
de las Madres será diferente
de la de ustedes. Ellos son los
Soñadores o DREAMERs cuyas
madres han sido deportadas.
Mientras que otros pasaron
la semana previa al Día de las
Madres buscando algo para
darle a mamá, este grupo de
personas estuvo en Washington
para una reunión con el Caucus
Hispano del Congreso. Ellos
esperaban llevar el asunto de
la reforma migratoria hacia su
aprobación.
Recuerden que los DREAMERs han estado separados de sus
madres, no por elección, sino
por el inservible proceso del
sistema de inmigración. Muchos
de ellos han visto a uno o a sus
dos padres deportados. Este proceso de deportación ha separado
y sigue separando familias y en
ocasiones como del Día de las
Madres, se siente realmente la
separación.
En este punto, la única manera en que los DREAMERs pue
den pasar el Día de las Madres
con sus mamás es a través del
uso de Skype, gracias a United
We Dream.
Este grupo está a la vanguardia en la protesta sobre estas
separaciones y quieren expandir
la estipulación de exención del
“derecho a reunirse” en la medida del Senado de la reforma
migratoria.
Este Día de las Madres, mientras ustedes y los suyos celebran
a su madrecita, tengan presente
a los DREAMERs. Además, en
algún momento durante el día
este proverbio hebreo: “Dios
no podía estar en todas partes y
por lo tanto hizo a las madres”.

Inmate’s mistaken release triggers investigation

made while running for election, Sheriff Susan Pamerleau
has continued to be upfront
about events happening within
the Sheriff’s office and Bexar
County Jail whether it is positive or negative news.
Early in the week a mistake
within the Bexar County Jail
released a female inmate before
her full sentence was served
and was quickly apprehended
the next day at a relative’s
home after the error was realized.
The blunder occurred when
25-year-old, inmate Jazmyne
Bates originally charged for
a misdemeanor theft of $500$1500, served her full sentence
for the original offense but
picked up another charge while
incarcerated for a separate
felony conviction charge that
lead to her picking up an additional eight months.
Bates is now awaiting transfer to a Texas State Prison to
finish out her sentence.
Last fall, under previous administration, a similar situation
had occurred when inmate Vincent Barnett was erroneously
released before his sentence
was complete.
These kinds of accidents are
a rarity. The jails “paper-based,
antiqued” is partly to blame according to Sheriff Pamerleau.
“We are continuing to investigate all the factors that led to
the erroneous release. A group
of senior jail officers is working
on solutions with other Bexar
County officials to improve the
processes and procedures that
let to this incident. The Sheriff
made it clear that she will take
the appropriate action once
the investigation is complete,”

According to research conducted
and compiled by La Fe Policy Research and Education Center, too
many Mexican American seniors
in San Antonio are not eating a
healthy diet.
Through collaboration with La
Fe and Martinez Street Women’s
Center, the AARP Foundation supported CENA program is teaching
our community about proper nutrition and available resources. It’s a
fact: little changes can lead to big
differences in the health and quality
of life, for seniors. Trained seniors
call animadores (community facilitators) help other seniors to make
more healthy eating decisions.
At a recent Nutrition Loteria
party held at one of San Antonio
Housing Authority’s (SAHA)
facilities, residents aged 55-80
learned about the four food groups
and the new nutrition pyramid
while they vied for prizes such as
kitchen utensils. The seniors also
heard a personal story from Stan
Hernandez, a 60-year-old SAHA
case manager, who recently made
significant improvements in his
state of health.
Stan recognized that he grew
up eating all the wrong foods, and
didn’t practice portion control.
Three decades ago, when he was
in the service, he was diagnosed as
a borderline diabetic, but he made
no lifestyle changes to control his
sugar. As a result, he packed on
the pounds and his blood sugar rate
shot up to a dangerous level. His
doctor repeatedly told him to lose
weight, but Stan never took him
seriously.
This last December, Stan had severe pain. He was so uncomfortable
he could barely move. When the
doctor said he needed surgery, Stan
knew this was it. He had to make a
lifestyle change. He didn’t go into
the operating room, rather, he cut
out many of the foods that were
causing his severe health risks.
During the last three months,
Stan cut back on his rice, beans,
menudo, barbacoa, chorizo, alcohol, soda, candy and fats. He also
got out his bike, and started to bike
and walk routinely. He admitted it
was hard at first, but it got easier.
He also encouraged his wife to stop
buying the foods he needed to avoid
and replace them with vegetables.
The effort was worthwhile, and
Stan doesn’t sound like he will
revert to his old habits. His blood
sugar rate is 150 now, admittedly,
still a bit high, but a dramatic drop
from his standard of 300 or higher.
Stan says this is “just the beginning,” and he feels great. Currently,
he weighs 239, having lost 31
pounds since the day the doctor said
surgery was vital.
Stan recently had a checkup. The
MRI showed his liver was in much
better condition, and the doctor said
there is no longer any need for immediate surgery.
Stan’s story is case in point for
how mature adults can change
their dietary habits and see a
dramatic impact to their bienestar
(well-being). The CENA program
was developed to promote the
utilization of accessible food resources needed by seniors living
independently in the community
and to empower seniors to utilize
multiple community resources
to expand their access to affordable and safe food. CENA also
provides an informal support network among senior residents that
promotes healthy eating, access
to affordable food and advocacy
to prevent hunger among seniors.
The growth of Texas’ Latino
population and its new aging demographics requires innovative
approaches like Nutrition Loteria
to solve challenges such as food
insecurity among our elderly.

Perfect Health for Life. A vision that has been pursued by
countless men for centuries, including the famed Ponce De
Leon. Is it a Dream or Myth?
Well unfortunately it is not attainable in the world we live in today. But all hope is not lost, we
can achieve a measure of perfect
health even in this disease and
sickness plagued world we live
in today.
How is this possible? By taking our health and life back from
the Chronic Sick Care system.
Yes! We live in a society that
shuns common sense, and embraces un-wellness. People are
unwilling to look for an alternative to the Modern Medical Paradigm, give me a pill and make
me well!
Even though anyone who can
see knows that this is a flawed
and unhealthy system. How can
I make such a claim? Easily! The
world ranks the top 40 nations
every year according to health
and life quality. The USA is number 38, Japan is Number 1 and
several supposedly third world
countries have better life and
health and rank higher than we
do, in spite of the fact that we
have the largest, most expensive
health care system on the entire
planet.
So how can I say we can
achieve a measure of perfect
health? First we must take responsibility for our own life and
health. We need to look for what
has been lost. In 380 BC a natural physician named Hypocrites
who is credited with being the
father of modern medicine made
a very simple statement “Let
Food be your Medicine and Medicine be your Food.” We have
lost that brilliance in modern life,
to him it wasn’t brilliance, it was
common sense.
Today we seek drugs to fix
what’s wrong instead of allowing
the incredible instrument that
God gave to us heal itself by doing the simple, sensible things
that have be known for thousands
of years. Many diseases can be
mediated by proper diet, nutrition, sleep and exercise. Millions
of people do it every day. But
they have taken responsibility for
their own lives and health and are
unwilling to surrender it to the
system.
Does this mean that I believe
that modern medicine has no
place or benefit in people’s lives?
No! I believe the counsel from
Proverbs, “there is a time and
place for everything.” Just not
all the time and always the same
place.

farther with what I want to do.

Betina has found a couple of
schools so far. One is located
in California, and the other in
Connecticut. Teaching Braille
piano music is a very rare study
and if Betina goes through with
it she will be one of the only
ones in the nation to master
the skill.
Her goal should work as
awareness for the nation. There
is a need and want for visually
impaired students to read music, and there just aren’t enough
people in the world to do so.
Search the internet for braille
music, and notice that there
aren’t very many things to see.
Betina may be the voice needed
to create a revelation of braille
teaching masters in the nation.
“I’m so glad that now I am
able to teach. My teacher before
me taught me, and now I am.
It’s a very rewarding experience. I only started this several
months ago, and it’s already
done this so far. I can only
imagine what I can do when I
further my studies,” Vega said.

and hope she may continue on
with her special skills.

In 2005 in my last term on
the council one of the apartments requested my assistance
as a Councilman to convince
the San Antonio School District to assign a bus to transport
approximately 20 elementary
students from Fredericksburg
Road across the freeway to
Arnold Elementary School and
back. They would not do so.
After shaming the District
to do so with a little assistance
from the media it happened and
the students finally were able
to attend school without having
to walk across the freeway in
harm’s way.

Senator Leticia Van de Putte.
As a public servant she now
chairs among other committees, the veteran’s committee
to ensure they are taken care
of in their time of need.
It is nice to know we have
elected officials who do what
they were elected to do. I am
glad to call her friend.

Last Saturday, “Governor for
a Day” Leticia Van de Putte was
sworn into office by 4th Court
of Appeals Justice Luz Chapa in
front of a packed Senate Chamber. Thousands of supporters
swarmed the State Capitol to
witness the historic event.
Each legislative session
there is at least one day when
the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor are both out of
the state and the Senate Pro
Tem takes over the office to officiate over any state business
that might need to be done.
Largely ceremonial, the state
law however, requires that if
both Governor and Lt. Governor are not in the state at the
same time, the next in line to
govern falls to the Senate Pro
Tem at the time of the occurrence.
What makes the event historical is that it is the first time
a Hispanic female took over
the reins of power as Governor. History will tell you that
only two females ever served
as Governor in Texas History.
The first female Governor
Miriam “Ma” Ferguson served
from 1924-28 and again in
32-36. Governor Ann Richards served as Governor from
1990-94.
With 22 years of public
service that began as a State
Representative in 1990 and
then elected State Senator in
1999 in a special election, Van
de Putte continues to make her
mark on the state.
In 2004 when she ran for a
second full term, I had the opportunity to walk the streets
of Balcones Heights where I
served as Councilman at the
time, with her and her mother, Belle Ortiz. A number of
neighbors hosted tea parties
for her and I was privileged to
speak in her behalf as she canvassed the city. Her signs were
everywhere. In nearly every
block of the city her signs were

Todo esto ha pasado en menos
de un año, y eso sin mencionar
otros miles de homicidios y accidentes que se han presentado

Me imagino que muchos se
han preguntado al igual que yo:
¿Qué pasa con el mundo? ¿Por
qué están pasando tantas cosas
que perjudican a los demás?
Desde el año pasado he notado que las malas noticias
prevalecen entre la sociedad.
Tanto en Estados Unidos, como
en México, en China, en el
Medio Oriente y en miles de
lugares alrededor del mundo.
La gente se está volviendo loca.
Primero, un hombre que hace
casi un año se le ocurrió entrar a
un cine a matar a niños y adultos mientras veían la premier
de Batman; después se dieron
otras masacres en otras partes
de Estados Unidos, incluyendo
la de diciembre en que un joven
mató a niños y maestros en una
escuelita. Es ahí cuando te das
cuenta de que se necesita de uno
para que los demás se “armen
de valor”.
Eso no es todo. Se han dado
incendios masivos ocurridos,
por accidente, tanto en Estados Unidos como en México.
También hubo una explosión en
Boston mientras corredores llegaban a la meta de un maratón;
y en China un hombre se puso
a matar a cuchilladas a gente
inocente.
La Ciudad de San Antonio y la Autoridad
Fluvial del Río San Antonio organizarán un
tercer taller público para captivar la opinión
pública sobre el diseño conceptual de las
mejoras al Parque del Lago Elmendorf que
están siendo financiadas por la ciudad. La

Benghazi eight months later

On September 11, 2012, terrorists attacked our consulate in
Benghazi, Libya, and murdered
four Americans, including our
ambassador. Eight months later,
we have learned some of what
happened, but many questions
remain.
We still don’t know all the
facts about how we responded
during the seven and a half
hours of attacks, why we could
do nothing to save the lives
of Ambassador Chris Stevens,
Sean Smith, Glen Doherty, and
Tyrone Woods, and what, if
anything, we have done to deter
future attacks against Americans
by holding the responsible parties accountable.
What we do know leads to
the inescapable impression that
before, during, and after the
Benghazi attacks, there was
confusion and paralysis at the
Department of Defense, the
Department of State, and the
White House.
Congress has learned that
both Ambassador Stevens and
his predecessor made repeated
requests for additional security
during the spring and summer
of 2012. Most notably, Ambassador Stevens sent a cable to
the State Department on August
15, 2012, expressly requesting
additional security because the
Benghazi consulate could not
withstand a coordinated attack.
The requests were denied, but
Martin Dempsey, chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
observed in congressional testimony that Defense could have
provided all the needed security
if State had requested it.
Strikingly, Chairman
Dempsey admitted he “would
call myself surprised” that former secretary of state Hillary
Clinton testified that she did not
know about that cable at the time
of the attacks.
We also know that the State
Department made no request
for additional security from the
Defense Department in Benghazi in the weeks leading up
to September 11, 2012, despite
knowing that the Red Cross and
the United Kingdom had both
withdrawn from the city because
of the deteriorating security
situation — not to mention the
obvious significance of the
anniversary of September 11,
2001. Worse, we have been told
that no military assets were in a
position to respond during the
seven-plus hours of the attacks.
But, as Chairman Dempsey
testified, had additional support
been requested before the attack,
Defense would have provided it,
and it could have saved lives.
The attack began at 3:42 p.m.
EDT. We know that President
Obama received a single 10to 15- minute briefing on the
Benghazi attack from Secretary
of Defense Leon Panetta and
Chairman Dempsey at 5:00
p.m., during his regularly scheduled briefing. But we also know
that the president had no subsequent discussions with either the
secretary or the chairman for the
duration of the attack.
Seven and a half hours after
the attack commenced, at 11:15
pm EDT, sustained mortar fire
killed Glen Doherty and Tyrone
Woods. Neither the secretary
nor the chairman had any discussions with the president at that
time, or throughout the remainder of the night. Moreover, the
president had no contact with
any member of the government
of Libya for the duration of the
attacks.
We know that during the
duration of the attacks, neither
Secretary Panetta nor Chairman
Dempsey slept; both remained
at the Pentagon throughout the
night. But neither the secretary
nor the chairman knows if the
president slept while our people
were under attack.
While the president was missing in action, there was confusion among the relevant cabinet
officers as to who was in charge
of coordinating the response
from Washington. But we know
that from the beginning to the
end of the attacks, neither Secretary Panetta nor Chairman
Dempsey had any conversation whatsoever with Secretary
Clinton.
We also know that in the
aftermath of the attacks, the
Benghazi compound remained
unsecured — and media reporters were able to access confidential documents — for 23 days
because the State Department
did not request Defense’s assistance in securing the site.
We know from their congressional testimony that according
to the secretary of defense, the
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, and the director of national intelligence, because the
attack on the annex employed
rocket-propelled grenades and
sustained mortar shelling, there
was “no question” at the time
that the events in Benghazi were
terrorist attacks.
We know that on September
14 and 15, 2012, the State Department altered the administration’s talking points on Benghazi to eliminate references to
“Islamic extremists” and “al
Qa’ida,” and instead substituted
language about how the incident
was a “spontaneously inspired .
. . violent protest.”
We know that at Dover Air
Force Base on September 14,
2012, when the coffins of the
four dead Americans came
home, Secretary Clinton attributed the attack to “an awful
videotape we had nothing to do
with.”
And, in the aftermath of the
attacks, we know of no effort
to mount a counterattack that
would deter similar acts of
terrorism in the future. In the
intervening months, we have
seen additional attacks on our
personnel abroad, including the
attempted suicide bombing of
our embassy in Ankara, Turkey,
and the brutal attack on the
natural-gas facility in Algeria
in which two Texans, Victor
Lovelady and Frederick Buttaccio, lost their lives.
What we know today has
come only as a result of sustained inquiry by Congress.
Officials have been exceedingly
reluctant to share information
and have insisted that all relevant questions were asked and
answered in the State Department Accountability Review
Board (ARB) report completed
in December 2012.
“What difference at this point
does it make?” Secretary Clinton responded in January to
questions about the nature of
the Benghazi attack. “Let’s put
this behind us,” Secretary of
State John Kerry complained
last month. Last week, White
House spokesman Jay Carney
dismissed press inquiries about
the attack by saying, “Benghazi
was a long time ago.”
Ambassador Stevens, Sean
Smith, Glen Doherty, and Tyrone Woods deserve justice,
and our brave men and women
who continue to put their lives
on the line every day in similar,
dangerous situations deserve to
know we are doing everything
possible not only to protect them
in the event of a terrorist attack,
but also to deter these attacks
from happening again. Better
late than never.

Mexicanas de San Antonio (COMEXSA---organization of immigrant based groups) I and other
officers and members have been
very much involved in trying to
convince State Representatives
Justin Rodriguez and Mike Villarreal of the concern we have for
needed reform and improvements
of the public education system in
Texas. This coming week will be
the last and most important week of
all for such reforms as parent trigger
and Achievement School District
to pass the House Committee on
Public Education on which Mr.
Rodriguez and Mr. Villarreal serve.
As Latinos who together represent
a large portion of San Antonio in
the state House of Representatives,
they are key to deciding whether
these reforms pass or die in the state
legislature.
We have been fortunate that La
Prensa, the San Antonio Express
News, El Mundo newspaper, Telemundo and Univision have given
attention to the concerns we have
expressed about the urgency and
importance reforms to public education are for all children in Texas.
We have written and expressed
our concerns with the high dropout
rates of Latino children from public
schools, the lack of preparation in
math and reading that limit opportunities for a good job or being able
to go to college, growing violence
and gang activity in and around
many schools in Latino neighborhoods, and low performing schools
that seem to be more in our communities than not.
In the course of our efforts we
have come to know the long history
of problems at least two generations of Latino children have had in
securing an education that provides
the choice of getting a good job or
going to college a reality. For too
many Latinos this choice has not
been and may not be possible.
This experience for me and my
COMEXUS friends and members
has been very eye opening. We are
not experts at education policy but
we do believe that parents should
have the right to petition their local
schools for changes and improvements to these problems that our
children attend. Current state law
says that we must wait for these
schools to have six consecutive
years of low performance before a
majority of parents can get together
and petition for changes or closure
of such schools. Under this law
children can attend a low performing school for all 12 years of their
public school education. This is
not right nor should anyone try to
justify/defend this terrible sentence
for failure.
The parent trigger legislation
we have been supporting changes
the five years to three years before
parents can take action to petition.
While many of us believe it should
be two years before we can take action, we are supporting three years
as the compromise proposed in one
of the key reform bills the House
Committee on Public Education
will vote on this coming Tuesday.
Parents need to have this important
tool that can be used if schools are
not performing to the standards that
are required by state law. Children
deserve nothing less!
The second major legislation
is Achievement School District.
This legislation offers parents and
children attending low performing
schools another opportunity for
improving schools. Schools who
are assessed as low performing for
two consecutive years are placed
in a statewide district that has resources and education experts to
“turn around” these schools. These
are two very important tools that are
being proposed to improve and reform public education in Texas. As
Latinos we MUST be part of this
important discussion in the state
legislature and these bills need to be
supported and passed with Latino
state legislators leading the effort.
We have read and been informed
of the positive efforts that Senator
Leticia Van de Putte and Senator
Eddie Lucio, Jr. have played in the
state Senate passing these and other
very important reforms. We thank
them for their work on our behalf
and for all Texans. The challenge
now lies with Latinos in the House.
We need both Rep. Villarreal and
Rep. Justin Rodriguez to support
parent trigger and Achievement
School District legislation otherwise these vital and important
tools will be lost. What is at stake
is not something that can be lost
and regained later. What is lost is
precious time to prepare children
for a better future, what is lost is that
desire to learn and ability to learn
that all children need at key times
in their development, what is lost
is the ability to dream about being
whatever children might want to be
or attain as adults. These are things
that we should all fight to keep and
improve. We now ask Mr. Villarreal and Mr. Rodriguez to help us
with this fight----vote for parent
trigger and Achievement School
District legislation next week.

4SL Institute still accepting applications

High school students who
haven’t worked out what to do this
summer still have an opportunity to
apply to the prestigious Four Star
Leadership Institute (4SL) and really take control of their destinies.
There’s still a week left still a week
left to get those applications turned
in for the program which features
great training, scholarship opportunities and an overall outstanding
experience.
But the May 15 deadline for the
competitive institute is just around
the corner, so don’t miss out.
4SL is an intense week-long
leadership and character development program for high school
students led by General Tommy
Franks. Students who are accepted
will get to interact with role models and leaders from every corner
-- from politicians to authors, to
local and national leaders, and then
the fun starts. Students will get the
chance to really hone their skills
and compete in writing and debate.
This year’s program will be
conducted at Oklahoma Christian
University in Edmund, Oklahoma,
July 14-20.
“Our grand experiment of America can’t last long in gridlock,” said
Gen. Franks. “We’re going to have
to get to a point where you can
have an opinion, and I can have
an opinion, and we can argue the
merits of each viewpoint without
being disrespectful.”
The program covers all the basic
expenses: air fare, room and board,
and is entirely free for the 50 selected students. A terrific bonus is that
thousands of dollars in scholarships
will be available to all participants.
Three full-tuition scholarships to
the University of Texas – Arlington
and $15,000 in scholarship grants
will be awarded to competition
winners, and every one of the 50
students who will attend Oklahoma
Christian University will receive a
$1,000 per year scholarship for up
to four years.
Students will be chosen based on
the leadership potential demonstrated in their application, references
provided and a phone interview.
“It’s long been my hope that we
could mentor young people in this
skill of resolving conflicts through
civil discourse, rather than civil
discord. And the Four Stars of this
kind of leadership are Character,
Common Vision, Communication,
and Caring,” Franks added.
Franks, former commander-inchief of American and coalition
forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, will
host the program with Oklahoma
Christian University (OC), the
National Center for Policy Analysis
(NCPA) and the newest partner for
2013, the Oklahoma Council of
Public Affairs (OCPA).

Este fin de semana se inicia la
temporada número 57 del festival
Fiesta Noche Del Río en el Arneson
River Theatre de La Villita, que por
más de medio siglo ha presentado
ininterrumpidamente Alamo Kiwanis Club a beneficio de instituciones caritativas dedicadas al bienestar
de los niños.
El festival se presenta todos los
viernes y sábados a 8 de la noche
de mayo 10 hasta el 10 de agosto
(excepto el 18 de mayo, pues está
reservado para el Armed Forces
River Parade). El evento abre una
ventana mágica de música variada
y atuendos típicos del continente
americano, desde Argentina, pasando por México y llegando a los
Estados Unidos, sin olvidar la la
música y baile de la Madre Patria,
España.
El miércoles pasado en el Arne-
son Theatre, Craig Christopher,
presidente de Alamo Kiwanis Club,
dio a conocer el calendario para el
festival 2013 y al mismo tiempo
entregó un donativo de 167 mil
dólares, producto las entradas del
festival 2013, fondos que serán
distribuidos entre 18 agencias u

in both Spanish and English in
collaboration with the Universidad de Mexico en San Antonio
(UNAM).”Ateneo” literally

on a broad spectrum of topics
through this organization.
The well-crafted seminars take
place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at
UNAM San Antonio in Hemisfair and are always free and open

The purpose of the series is to
consider historical studies from a
scientific perspective. The work
is modeled on José Vasconcelos’
work (Ateneo de la Juventud,
1909) with a goal to conserve,
share and promote culture to
benefit society. The weekly
conversations on art, culture and
history are generally moderated
by UNAM Mexican History Dr.

but a few people are claiming

KENS 5 in San Antonio identified the screamer as Val Garcia, a
23-year-old dental assistant. "It's
like I wanted the Spurs to hear it
so they wouldn't lose their fire,"
Garcia told the station. "I swear
my eyes were going to pop out
of my face. I was totally out
of breath. After the game I felt
lightheaded (and) my voice was
shot." However, KENS 5 also
received word from a fan named
Paige Kramer, who also claimed
to be the woman in question.
WOAI identified the woman
as Vickie Villarreal, who said
her parents could tell it was her
voice. But a fourth woman, Lori
Aguilar, went on the radio and to
WOAI turning herself in as the
suspect, telling WOAI, "After
hearing it just once, I knew."
The Evidence:. Obviously, the
camera is focused on the on-court
action, but the voice is hard to
miss in the background.
Tim Burke of Deadspin broke
down the audio from the clip and
determined that the screamer in
question was picked up from
the microphones on either Chris
Webber or Dick Stockton’s
headset.
The Verdict: This seems like
a case of several people looking
for their 15 minutes of fame. We
assume it was a woman, but this
“Simpsons” episode reminds us
that it could be a man. Either
way, the shrieking disappeared in
Game 2. Most likely ’cause the
shrieker’s voice was shredded.
That would be justice enough.

Con un rol de juegos, consistente en 34 partidos en el circuito del baloncesto profesional
Women’s National Basketball
Association (WNBA), el club
de baloncesto femenil profesional San Antonio Silver Stars
se declaró listo para jugar sus
dos partidos de pretemporada tras
arduas sesiones en su campo de
entrenamientos.
Las Silver Stars son dirigidas
por el entrenador en jefe Dan
Hughes y sus asistentes James
Wade, de nuevo ingreso, y la ex
jugadora Vickie Johnson, quien
entra en su segunda temporada
colaborando en la preparación y
dirección del equipo.
El sábado 11 de mayo a la 1
p.m. en el AT&T Center, las
Silver Stars recibirán al equipo
Fever de Indiana, que es el actual campeón y viene dirigido
por la legendaria entrenadora
Lin Dunn. Silver Stars pagarán
la visita el miércoles 15 de mayo
en un encuentro a celebrarse en
la arena Bankers Life Fieldhouse,
ubicada en el centro de la ciudad
de Indianapolis, la cual también es
sede del equipo Pacers de Indiana,
asociados a la NBA.
Con ambos partidos a jugarse en
pretemporada contra las monarcas
de la WNBA, Silver Stars de
seguro estarán bien ubicada en
su ritmo de juego para jugarle un

defensive gem to end the game.
This was Rattlers Softball at
its best. St. Mary’s left nothing to chance in the Heartland
Conference Tournament championship game, playing near
picture-perfect softball to beat
St. Edward’s 4-2 for the conference title.
Shelly Lee Zawadzki (Sr.,
San Antonio) had an RBI triple
in the bottom of the fifth inning
to erase a 2-1 deficit and subsequently put the Rattlers on
top, 3-2, by scoring on a wild
pitch. Then, with St. Edward’s
(30-21) fighting to change the
outcome late, shortstop Sarah
Perez (Sr., San Marcos, Texas)
turned a game-winning double
play as the Hilltoppers had the
go-ahead run at the plate in the
bottom of the seventh.
Through it all, ace Emily
Brittain picked up her 26th victory on the season after scattering six hits and two runs in five
innings, while Maricela Bissaro
came in to shut things down for
the final two innings to pick up
her second save of the year.
The Rattlers (43-13 will advance to the NCAA Division II
South Central Regional, where

The No. 7 St. Mary’s Baseball
team swept the Heartland Conference Player of the Week awards
following two stellar performances
from ace Matt McClain and slugger
Derek Moczygemba in the Rattlers’s
regular season finale.
McClain (So., San Antonio)
charted his third conference Pitcher
of the Week award this season with
his honor the past week, the most for
the league. McClain strutted a career
performance against McMurry last
week, tossing a one-hitter with 14
strikeouts while walking one in
seven complete innings. Already
the conference’s strikeout leader,
the lefty’s 14 last week, which saw
13 go down swinging, bumped his
strikeout count to 98 on the season.
On the season, McClain is leading the pitching staff in ERA with
1.68 while keeping opponents to the
lowest batting average on the staff at
.184. For Moczygemba, his second
career Hitter of the Week award came
after a monster performance at the
plate in the series against McMurry.
On the week, Moczygemba batted
.455 that included six RBIs, two
doubles, one home run and three runs
scored. He also had a pair of sacrifice
hits to lead the Rattlers to a 2-1 week
and was responsible for half of the
Rattlers’ runs in Game 2 with five. So
far this season, Moczygemba leads
the Rattlers in home runs with four
and total bases with 76 to go along
with a .316 batting average.
The Rattlers finished the regular season 35-13 overall and
28-7 in conference to take the
regular-season championship
crown. St. Mary’s is set to
host the Heartland Conference

the hard-won political and
social gains of the last two
decades. And that’s why I
reaffirmed the United States’
strong support and commitment to building a more prosperous Central America.
That’s important, because
broad-based economic growth
doesn’t just create more jobs
and opportunity in these countries — it also reduces illegal
immigration to the United
States. Commonsense immigration reform is one of my
top priorities. The bill introduced in the Senate doesn’t
include everything I want,
but it’s largely consistent
with the principles I’ve laid
out: better border security,
a path to citizenship, and a
legal immigration system that
unites families and attracts
highly-skilled workers. And
I’m hopeful that we can make

hispanas se pusieron del lado de
las empresas de embotellamiento
que se oponían a los esfuerzos por
reducir la excesiva ampliación
de las gaseosas azucaradas de

Nueva York, Michael Bloomberg. El ámbito pasa de ser
un asunto de políticas a ser
un asunto de interés privado
porque las embotelladoras
como la Coca Cola y PepsiCo
han estado tan metidas en la
financiación de organizaciones hispanas, como indicó
recientemente reportero Luis
Carlos López en el sitio noticioso, Voxxi.com
El alto contenido azucarado
como importante elemento que
conlleva a la obesidad por todo
el mundo está probando ser
cada vez más indiscutible.
Lo indican los índices de
diabetes. Incluso la Grocery
Manufacturers Association ha
respondido con mejorar las etiquetas de contenido nutritivo
de la industria, tarea que se
anticipa completará para fines
del presente año. Su intención
es de mostrarse como una medida de buena fe para mejor
informar a los consumidores.
No obstante, el meollo del
problema puede que no sea la
nutrición, no del todo. Según
la definición del Instituto Hispano, también se trata de cómo
las corporaciones grandes
alimentan a las organizaciones latinas nacionales de alto
nivel. Algunos grupos comunitarios ponen en compromiso
sus lealtades, o no perciben
la diferencia entre su misión
comunitaria y el servir a sus
patrones que financian sus
actividades.
Un colega mío, el doctor
James Lamare, reportó sobre
un evento realizado justo antes
que el presidente Obama fuera
a presentar un discurso ante el
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). Primero
salió un mensaje comercial de
los patrocinadores del evento:
AT&T, JP Morgan Chase,
McDonald’s y Time Warner.
Entre otros temas, se ha criticado
a algunas organizaciones latinas
nacionales por su defensa de la
propiedad de los medios sin
regulación federal, tema que
resulta ser más del interés de
las corporaciones dueñas de
medios que de los consumidores de medios latinos, y de
mejor presentación de las noticias y la información.
Hay una preocupación creciente que dada la fuerza de los
patrocinadores empresariales,
el Consejo Nacional de La
Raza, está más allegado a los
gigantes de la industria que a
los grupos que deberían estar
protegiendo y a grandes rasgos
al propósito latino.
Así como los dilemas políticos del pasado que no llegan
a resolverse, el juego pasa
ahora al otro tema, el enorme
conflicto de interés, que va a
ser sobre la obesidad. ¿Es del
interés de quién tomar qué
medida? ¿O no tomar acción
alguna?
El Instituto Hispano, cual
veleta, ya ha señalado donde
va soplando el viento.
El resultado tendrá a ganadores y perdedores. ¿Serán los
poderosos intereses comerciales
o la preocupación del público
por mejorar la salud y la nutrición?
Se enmarcará el tema como
una política pública. Pero la
realidad – lo que está en juego
– es quién nos alimentará con
su opinión.

Divorcio de hijos y padres El ejemplo de la mascarita

El juez golpeó la mesa con el
martillo, y solemnemente pronunció la sentencia: “Concedida la demanda. Gregory queda divorciado
de Raquel”. Pero en este caso se
refería al divorcio en sentido figurado, porque quien se divorciaba
era un niño de doce años de edad.
El menor había solicitado, en
un tribunal de la Florida en los
Estados Unidos, divorciarse de
su madre Raquel Kinsley para
poder ser adoptado legalmente por
George y Lizz Russ, la pareja que
lo había prohijado.
El juez concedió este extraño
divorcio porque Raquel, la madre,
había abandonado por completo a
su hijo prácticamente desde que
nació.
En la actualidad los divorcios
no son excepcionales, pero este
divorcio es singular porque lo
solicitó contra su madre un niño
de doce años. La madre era drogadicta, mujer de bares y clubes
nocturnos, de hombres, de fiestas
y de abandono. En los doce años
de la vida de Gregory, Raquel
nunca fungió como verdadera
madre. Fue madre biológica y
nada más.
Gregory nunca tuvo cariño, ni
educación ni cuidado. En cambio,
la otra pareja le dio a Gregory
todo lo que un niño necesita:
amor, protección, consejos y la
palabra mágica “hogar”.
Lo cierto es que el hogar y
la familia están sufriendo un
ataque despiadado por parte de
fuerzas enemigas como lo son
el desapego de los padres hacia
los hijos, la libertad excesiva,
los vicios desenfrenados, la inmoralidad desvergonzada, y la
irreligiosidad.
La antigua institución judeocristiana se bambolea: las paredes se resquebrajan, el techo se
hunde, los cimientos ceden y la
casa se viene abajo.
¿Qué consecuencias trae este
derrumbe del hogar, especialmente entre los adolescentes?
Drogadicción, pandillaje, relaciones sexuales fuera del matrimonio, embarazos indeseados,
delincuencia juvenil. Todos estos
males tienen origen en hogares
que no son hogares sino solo casas, cuatro paredes frías sin alma.
¿De dónde proceden todos
estos males sociales? De un gran
divorcio previo, cuando el hombre se divorció de Dios. Todos los
males que hay en el mundo —y
la lista es larga— provienen de
aquel primer divorcio que Adán y
Eva hicieron de Dios su Creador
y Padre.
Sin embargo, es posible reconciliarse con Dios y volver a
casarse. Hay sanidad en la familia
cuando se restablece esta comunión. Sometámonos al señorío de
Jesucristo. Cuando Él es Señor de
nuestra vida, de nuestro matrimonio y de nuestro hogar, todo
cambia. Él está en este momento
tocando a la puerta de nuestro
corazón. Abrámosela hoy mismo.

“Saúl Zuratas tenía un lunar
morado oscuro... que le cubría todo el lado derecho de la
cara.... El lunar no respetaba la
oreja ni los labios ni la nariz a
los que también erupcionaba
de una tumefacción venosa.
Era el muchacho más feo del
mundo; también, simpático y
buenísimo.... Lo conocí cuando
dábamos los exámenes de ingreso a la Universidad.... El día
en que lo conocí me advirtió,
muerto de risa, señalándose el
lunar:
“—Me dicen Mascarita, compadre. A que no adivinas por
qué.
“Con este apodo lo llamábamos también nosotros, en
San Marcos....
“Íbamos, de cuando en cuando, entre dos clases universitarias, a jugar una partida en una
desvencijada sala de billar....
Andando por la calle con Saúl
se descubría lo molesta que tenía
que ser su vida, por la insolencia y la maldad de la gente. Se
volvían o se plantaban a su paso,
para mirarlo mejor, y abrían
mucho los ojos, sin disimular el
asombro o la repulsión que les
inspiraba su cara, y no era raro
que, los chiquillos sobre todo,
le dijeran majaderías. A él no
parecía molestarle; reaccionaba
siempre a las impertinencias con
alguna salida chistosa.
“... Al entrar al billar... (un)
borracho estaba bebiendo en el
mostrador. Apenas nos vio, vino
a nuestro encuentro, tambaleándose, y se plantó ante Saúl, con
los brazos en jarras:
“—¡...Qué monstruo! ¿De qué
zoológico te escapaste, oye?
“—De cuál va a ser, pues,
compadre, del único que hay,
del de Barranco —le respondió
Mascarita—. Si vas corriendo,
encontrarás mi jaula abierta.
“Y trató de pasar. Pero el borracho alargó las manos hacia él,
haciendo contra con los dedos,
como los niños cuando les mentan la madre.
“—Tú no entras, monstruo....
Con esa cara, no debías salir a la
calle; asustas a la gente.
“—Pero si no tengo otra; ¿qué
quieres? —Le sonrió Saúl—.
Déjanos pasar, y no te pongas
pesado.
“Yo, para entonces, perdí la
paciencia. Cogí al borracho de las
solapas y comencé a zamaquearlo.
Hubo un conato de trompeadera,
revuelo de gente, empujones,
y Mascarita y yo tuvimos que
marcharnos sin jugar nuestra
partida.
“Al día siguiente recibí de él
(una)... cartita (que, entre otras
cosas) decía...:
Compadre..., no tengas más
rabietas, y menos por culpa mía.

experiencia personal, cuenta el
Premio Nobel peruano Mario
Vargas Llosa en su obra El
hablador, Saúl Zuratas sigue a
cabalidad el siguiente consejo
de San Pablo, que a todos nos
conviene seguir: “No paguen
a nadie mal por mal.... Si es
posible, y en cuanto dependa de
ustedes, vivan en paz con todos.
No tomen venganza, hermanos
míos, sino dejen el castigo en
las manos de Dios, porque está
escrito: ‘Mía es la venganza;
yo pagaré’, dice el Señor. Antes bien: “Si tu enemigo tiene
hambre, dale de comer; si tiene
sed, dale de beber. Actuando así,
harás que se avergüence de su
conducta”. No te dejes vencer

Barnes, and Macey Isaacs; maternal cousins are Meagan, Van, Coy, Claire, Ethan, and
Sydney. Rex's paternal grandparents are Henry P. Van de Putte, Jr. and Senator Leticia Van
de Putte of San Antonio. His paternal aunts and uncles are Nichole and Jason Stiles, Vanessa Van de Putte, Henry and Rena Van de Putte, Isabella Van de Putte, and Paul Van de
Putte; paternal cousins are Julian, Jove, and Marlo. Great-grandparents include Verla Fhuer
of Florida, Belle and Juan Ortiz, Daniel and Barbara San Miguel, and Elizabeth and Robert
Hodnett all of San Antonio.
Special aunts and uncles are April Hill and her daughter Hannah, Lisa Hall and her children Noah and Presley, and Louie Hidalgo.
Baby Rex gave us a lifetime of love during his short time on earth.

Niños del Distrito Edgewood dieron vida al Cinco de Mayo

Las escuelas de Edgewood
Independent School District participaron una vez más en el desfile
del Cinco de Mayo para conmemorar la victoria del ejército mexicano
sobre el invasor ejército de Francia
en 1862.
La épica batalla para derrotar al
mejor ejército del mundo de esa
época fue librada en Puebla de Los
Ángeles, ciudad colonial que – año
tras año – se viste de gala para conmemorar esta significativa victoria.
El desfile anual tuvo lugar el
sábado 4 de mayo. En el mismo
participaron carros alegóricos y
bandas de música que formaron
una larga caravana desde Commerce Street hasta Edgewood
Fine Arts Academy en el 607 de
la calle 34.

Vuelve el desfile militar Local student’s art gets
en el Río San Antonio Congressional accolades

El River Walk se adornará con
mucho orgullo de los colores
rojo, azul y blanco el próximo
sábado 18 de mayo a las 6:00
p.m. con una nueva edición del
“America’s Armed Forces River
Parade”.
Un total de 25 barcas, decoradas de acuerdo a sus participantes, recorrerán el Río San
Antonio. Ellas transportarán
representantes de las distintas
fuerzas armadas, veteranos de
diferentes conflictos, grupos de
apoyo, grupos de música y más.

Each spring, a flurry of fresh
young artistic talent presents their
best work to the Congressional Institute’s national high school visual
art competition. Since 1982, more
than 650,000 high school students
have participated in the program
which is designed to recognize and
encourage artistic talent across the
country and in each congressional
district.
In District 35, hundreds of students submitted entries to Congressman Lloyd Doggett’s office and a panel of district artists
selected the winning entry. This
is the first year that entries were
submitted digitally.
This year’s winner, Brackenridge High School senior Arianna
Castaneda from the San Antonio
Independent School District, will
be recognized at the district level
and at an annual awards ceremony
in Washington, DC in June. Her
winning artwork will also be
displayed for one year at the U.S.
Capitol.
“Arianna shows talent and commitment while reflecting the quality of education at Brackenridge
High School, particularly the
inspiration of Theresa Ybanez, a
great art teacher. Soon Arianna
and a parent will be taking a free
trip to Washington, D.C. to attend
the awards ceremony and see her
artwork displayed at the U.S. Capitol, and in a few years I hope she
can fulfill her personal goals,” Rep.
Doggett said. “Arianna’s work, ‘As
Tough as Texas,’ illustrates the
kind of creativity for which San
Antonio is renowned.”
Castaneda, just 18, rediscovered her passion for art during her
sophomore year at Brackenridge,
“I loved to draw when I was little
– by the time I got to high school
I really missed it. So I decided to
take art class and my teacher, Ms.
Congressman Lloyd Doggett, art teacher Theresa Ybanez and
award-winning Brackenridge High School student Arianna Castaneda display the winning piece Castaneda created to hand in

Bishop was such an inspiration,”
she explained.
Throughout the year, working
with Ms. Bishop, she learned to
dare to try new things and different
mediums.
Starting the year working with
color pencils and simple shapes,
Castaneda progressed through hard
work and ended the year with an
extraordinary self-portrait.
“That was the very first one I
made – and it made me want to
work harder and do more,” she
added.
So the young student embarked
on a second and third year of art
at Brackenridge with Theresa
Ybanez, who guided her through
work in at least a dozen mediums,
from charcoals to pastels to oils
and special papers to full blown
canvases.
“I also discovered I love to work
in charcoal,” Castaneda said.
The student joined the ranks of
Advanced Placement art students
in her senior year where her focus
continues to be portraits – this
year mostly of friends and family
members. She was shocked to learn
her work was selected to represent
District 35 in Washington from
hundreds of entries.
“Winning the National Congressional Art competition was a huge
honor for me – I didn’t expect
it at all. To think the panel and
Congressman Doggett thought
my work was worthy to hang in
the nation’s capital is amazing,”
Castaneda said.
Her teacher, Theresa Ybanez, is
not so surprised, however. While
Castaneda’s work was up against
hundreds of terrific entries, Ybanez
had faith in her student’s potential.
“I met Arianna when she was a
sophomore. Ms. Bishop pointed
out her remarkable talent and
strong work ethic. This student
was so dedicated to her work it
was striking. It’s just such an unusual trait in teenagers,” Ybanez
explained.
Ybanez said Castaneda simply
continued to grow in ability.
“She kept blooming and growing – I think one of the ways Arianna gets inspired is that she is so
receptive to challenge. She is like
a sponge – she wants to learn more
and more and keeps reaching to do
new things with her art,” Ybanez
said. ”She practices her art like an
elite athlete – she just keeps working and refining her skills. We are
so proud of her.”

Cómo negociar tu sueldo

Imagina que tienes que ir a
una entrevista de trabajo. Obviamente vas a hacer todo lo posible para impresionar a tu futuro
jefe; averiguas información de
la compañía, actualizas tu hoja
de vida y por supuesto, sacas
del clóset tu mejor atuendo.
Ese día te levantas temprano
y te sientes confiado que estás
preparado para contestar cualquier pregunta.
Llegas al lugar de tu cita y la
persona que te va a entrevistar
te invita a pasar a su oficina.
Tomas asiento y los nervios
se apoderan de ti, pero después
de conversar por varios minutos
notas que llevas la entrevista
bajo control y te relajas hasta el
momento que llega la única pregunta para la cual no te habías
preparado. “¿Cuánto esperas
ganarte en este puesto?”
Quienes son sorprendidos por
esta pregunta y responden con
alguna cantidad de dinero, no
importa cual sea, corren mucho
peligro.
Los estudios muestran que
las personas que dicen prematuramente cuánto desean ganar,
acaban con un sueldo más bajo
que aquellos que no hablan
de dinero hasta el final de la
entrevista.
Entonces, ¿cómo evadir la
pregunta del sueldo al principio
de una entrevista?
Existen tres tácticas efectivas
para esquivar esta interrogante:
Táctica #1: “Pienso que es
muy rápido hablar de sueldo
cuanto usted casi no me conoce.
Una vez estemos seguros de que
yo puedo hacer este trabajo,
entonces podríamos hablar de
mi salario”. Debes tratar de que
la conversación se enfoque en
las habilidades y destrezas que
posees y no en tu sueldo.
Táctica #2: Si el entrevistador
insiste en que le digas cuánto
quieres ganar, evade su interrogante con la siguiente pregunta
: “Dígame, ¿cuáles serán mis
obligaciones?, así tendré una
mejor idea de cuánto espero
ganar”.
Táctica #3: Digamos que la
persona es muy terca e inflexible
y dice: “Lo siento, tengo que saber cuánto aspira ganar, de otro
modo no podemos llevar a cabo
la entrevista”. En ese momento,
no des una cantidad exacta y
sugiere una suma promedio, así
tendrás la oportunidad de renegociar tu sueldo más adelante.
Por ejemplo: “Calculo entre $
40,000 y $50,000 al año, pero
todo depende de las responsabilidades que tenga que cumplir”.
También ten en cuenta que
en los primeros 15 segundos
del encuentro, ya el entrevistador creó una opinión de ti. La
seguridad que proyectes en ti
mismo hará la diferencia; por
eso, mantén tu postura derecha,
da un saludo de mano fuerte,
haz contacto visual y muestra
una gran sonrisa.

Pinkett-Smith in a new film
that has as its background the
world of salsa.
The film “Salsa” will tell
the story of a woman (PinkettSmith) who finds herself in a
transition phase in her life and
gets to know a salsa instructor
(Levy), and through dance she
begins to see life in another

Amy Heckerling (“Clueless,”

while Pinkett-Smith and Miguel

Levy, 32, two years ago was

Covo’s take on “The Great Gatsby”:
Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great
Gatsby” may not be a film for
everyone – but there is absolutely
no question this version brilliantly represents the classic as
written – which is no small feat.
If you love the novel, you will
love the film. If you haven’t read
the novel – you will definitely
have a deep understanding of
the themes and human struggle
depicted in those pages by the
time you walk out of the theater.
Scene after scene in this film
breathes life into every character,
every setting is authentic and a
truly explosive representation of
Gatsby’s (Leonardo DiCaprio)
grand mansion (a little too much
so, thanks to CGI) and the entire
film does a great job of taking
the audience away and deep into
the era. Even Carroway’s (Tobey Maguire) little cottage next
door in West Egg and the garish
apartment Tom Buchanan (Joel
Edgerton) set up for his mistress
are true to the book.
The only ridiculously incongruous effect is the soundtrack
– let’s just say Jay Z hasn’t
grasped the sounds or the soul
of the magnificent music of the
Jazz Age.
Certainly, some of the acting is
over-the-top in the most theatrical sense, but it works and for
me, it worked very, very well.
There was not one member of
this movie who failed – each
performance contributed unequivocally to the whole. What’s
more, I found the 3-D effects
acceptable and even somewhat
dazzling in this film.
From the archetypal green
light in the mist across the bay to
the larger-than-life heart break,
“The Great Gatsby” will fulfill

(EFE) - Twelve years after
the release of animation megahit “Monsters, Inc.,” Santiago
Segura and Jose Mota are back
as the Spanish voices of the two
central characters in a prequel set
to premiere in Spain on June 21.
“Monsters University,” a Pixar
Animation Studios production
distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, features Mota dubbing the
lines of Billy Crystal as Mike
Wazowski, while Segura provides
the Spanish-language voice of
John Goodman as James P. “Sulley” Sullivan.
Directed by Dan Scanlon
(“Cars”), the film takes places
a decade before the events of
“Monsters, Inc.” and shows how
Wazowski and Sulley meet at the
university where both are majoring in “scaring.”
The studious Mike and brawny
Sulley fall into a dangerous rivalry that lands them both behind bars before bringing them
together.

Tengo 25 años y me case
hace un año porque quedé
embarazada de mi novio.
Yo decidí tener a mi bebé y
gracias a Dios está muy bien,
ahora tiene 5 meses, pero mi
relación con mi esposo no es
muy buena.
Él tiene mucho dinero que
en realidad no es de él, sino
de su papá que tiene muchas
empresas en México.
Mi problema con él empieza
siempre porque como tiene
tanto dinero cree que tiene
control sobre mí, y lo peor
de todo es que a mí no me da
nada de dinero. Todo el dinero
se lo queda él y llena su clóset
de ropa y otros lujos, pero
cuando se trata de mí, se le
olvida que tiene dinero.

todo, al igual que mis suegros.
Lo triste de todo esto es que la
que se tiene que sentir mal y a
quien hacer sentir menos es a
mí, incluyendo a mis suegros
y a las hermanas de mi esposo.
No quiero decir que no me
compra nada, o que no me tiene
bien alimentada porque no es
así. Es muy buen proveedor,
pero me gustaría sentir más
confianza con él y poder decirle
que no solo quiero recibir lo que
a él le gusta, sino también me
gustaría que me consintiera y
me dejara elegir a mí.
La verdad no sé si estoy dispuesta a seguir aguantando esto
porque me duele que me humillen, me hace sentir muy mal
que me traten como si yo fuera
la extra en la familia, cuando en
realidad soy la mamá de la bebé
y además soy la esposa.
No sé qué hacer, estoy muy
indecisa y no sé si dejarlo o
seguir aguantando para que mi
hija no sufra después.
Yo tengo una carrera profesional pero no me gustaría
trabajar y no poder atender a
mi hija en todo el día. Por favor
ayúdame a tomar una decisión
porque apenas voy a cumplir un
año de casada y las cosas no me
gustan nada.
Querida mamá desesperada:
Aquí nadie puede hacer nada,
ni yo, ni tus padres, ni tu esposo; la única que puede hacer
algo al respecto eres tú. Por la
manera en que describes las
cosas, parece ser que tú eres
quien no quiere separarse de él,
especialmente porque te da la
facilidad de que no tienes que
trabajar y puedes disfrutar a tu
hija todo el día.
Es entendible tu punto, sin
embargo creo que también
tienes que poner una balanza
en tu vida y preguntarte: ¿Qué
me hace más feliz, trabajar o
pasar tiempo con mi hija? Solo
tú sabrás qué es lo que te traerá
mejores frutos en el futuro.
Lo que sí te recomiendo es
que hables con tu esposo y le
digas cómo te sientes, pues recuerda que en una pareja lo más
importante es la comunicación
y la confianza. Dile a tu pareja
qué es lo que te incomoda y
busquen juntos una manera de
solucionarlo.
Por otro lado, menciónale que
lo más importante para tu mundo
y el de él debe ser su hijita, y
por lo mismo deben enseñarle
el mejor camino y los mejores
valores.

Daisy Fuentes is returning to
Spanish-language television as the
host of the “La Voz Kids” music
competition on Telemundo.
The talent contest, inspired by
the success of NBC’s “The Voice”
and which aired for the first time
last Sunday with a record 1.7 million viewers, also features singers
Paulina Rubio, Prince Royce and
Roberto Tapia on the panel of
judges.
In addition to hosting the program, Fuentes also functions sort
of like the “encouragement committee” for the young contestants.
Fuentes began her television career as the weather-girl for a New
York television station. Shortly
thereafter, she made a successful
crossover to English-language TV
and for several years was the host
of programs like “MTV’s House
of Style” and “America’s Funniest
Home Videos,” as well as heading
up her own program on CNBC.
That’s why she says that participating in “La Voz Kids” is like
coming home.
“When they offered me the
chance to participate in this Spanish-language version of ‘The
Voice,’ I felt happy. I’m thrilled
to return to Hispanic television,
where my career began,” Fuentes
