Year of Mercy ~~~ Año de Misericordia
From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio Del Pastor
It is with a heavy heart that we wish a fond farewell to Juanita Rodriguez as she begins her retirement after so
many years of faithful service to our parish. We offer her our prayers for a safe and happy future with her
family. At the same time, however, we are fortunate to have Angela Maregente join our staff. After six years as a ESL
teacher, she will be helping to coordinate the ESL Program in addition to other administrative duties.
fiel servicio a nuestra parroquia.
ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD
Dear Parishioners of St. John,
I hope that you’re well! It’s with great
joy and gratitude that I invite you to my
ordination to the priesthood! On July 9,
at 10:30 am, in St. Vincent de Paul
Catholic Church, Bishop Vasquez
will ordain me along with four other
deacons to the priesthood. It will be
the culmination of seven years of
preparation, as well as a new beginning to the rest of my life
as a priest of Jesus Christ.
I remember fondly my time as a deacon this past summer at
St. John, and I would love if you could be with me to give
thanks to God for this great gift. Thank you for your support
and encouragement to me in this journey, and please continue praying for me as ordination day approaches. Count
on my prayers for you, and I hope to see you there!
With Grateful
Thanksgiving
For the special blessing
bestowed on me as the
newest staff member of
St. John the Evangelist,
I want to express my sincere appreciation for this
opportunity. As a 3rd-generation parishioner, I have
witnessed the steady expansion of our “church on
the hill” to its present location in the heart of San
Marcos. May the Holy Spirit grant me the necessary wisdom, fortitude and perseverance to fulfill
my new responsibilities. I stand ready to offer all
my concerted efforts to meet the challenges that lie
ahead.
In Christ,
tu presencia!
En Cristo,
On the first Sunday of the month, the anointing of
the sick will take place after all weekend Masses.
This includes anyone that is sick, about to have
surgery, and pregnant women about to give birth.
This will begin the first weekend in July after all
Masses.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Her name comes from Mount Carmel in
Israel or the Holy Land. Carmel means fertile
soil that produces good fruits.
The devotion to Our Lady of Mount
Carmel goes back to the frequent visits of the
prophet Elijah to pray for the people who had
been punished by God for 36 months without
rain. One day the prophet Elijah saw approaching
a small cloud that began to grow into a fruitful
rain. From then on the Catholic Church adopted
this as an announcement of the Virgin May where
she adopted this as an announcement of the
Virgin Mary where she, through her son Jesus Christ,
would give the largest and most profitable Thanksgiving
rain on us, poor sinners.
For centuries monks gathered at Mount Carmel
praying and doing penance and then people started
calling them Carmelite monks.
The spread of the devotion to Our Lady of
Carmel began in Italy where some monks went there
having survived the brutal attack of the Mohammedans,
strong enemies of Catholicism. There was a monk who
distinguished himself by his holy life, his witnessed the
visit of the Virgin of Carmel on July 16 on July 16,
1251, with an important message to the world:
June 26, 2016
La Virgen del Monte Carmelo
Su nombre viene del Monte Carmelo en
Israel o Tierra Santa. Carmen significa tierra
a llamar monjes Carmelitas.
The Virgin promised — “to grant special blessings to everyone who wear the Holy Scapular as an act
of love and devotion in honor of the Mother of God in a
desire to be converted and live a holier life.
The effects of the Scapular were left to see immediately in blessings and special aids such as temptations that moved away and in the conversion of sinners.
pecadores.
What saves them from danger is not the Blessed
Scapular by itself , but the Blessed Virgin Mary who
protects and defends those who carry the badge as a sign
of appreciation and devotion to her.
Devotion to our Lady of Mount Carmel is closely linked to devotion to the holy souls in purgatory as
the tradition says that the Blessed Virgin Mary had
promised to visit in purgatory his devotees on the next
Saturday closed to their death and grant them rest.
The Virgin of Carmen or Our Lady of Mount
Carmel is the patroness of car drivers, therefore cars on
this date are blessed; she’s also the patroness of airplane
pilots and navigators or shipowners.
Blessing of vehicles will take place after all
masses on July 16-17, 2016.

Interested in becoming a Catholic?
Need to get reacquainted with Catholic beliefs and practices?
Already a Catholic and interested in receiving the Sacraments?
Each year, Catholic parishes throughout the world offer individuals who wish to
learn about the Catholic faith an opportunity to get acquainted with Catholic beliefs and practices through
Inquiry sessions. However, attending the Inquiry Sessions is a requirement for persons desiring to receive the
sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation. This year these (English) sessions at St. John the
Evangelist Church, will take place on Mondays at 6:30pm – 8:00pm starting August 8, 2016 through early
November 2016.
After the inquiry sessions, individuals who desire to become full members of the Catholic Church continue
learning and preparing prayerfully to receive the sacraments of Baptism, (if the adult is not already a baptized
Christian), Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. These Catechumenate sessions will continue through April 17,
2017.
For additional information, please call 512-618-2260 or come by the church office before August 8, 2016. Most
importantly, please join us in praying for those who are seeking Christ, that they may have the grace to find Him
in our faith community.
Adult Confirmation
This year there will be NO separate Adult Confirmation classes. All adults wishing to receive the Sacraments of
Baptism, Holy Eucharist or Confirmation will need to attend the RCIA sessions.

Jesus is resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem where
he would suffer, die and rise. The image given today is a
straight line. Our eyes are to be fixed on the Lord proclaiming
the Kingdom of God by dying to ourselves to bring new life
to others. What distractions do you find in your daily life that
keep you from being focused on Jesus? What prevents you
from resolutely following Jesus?

We will have one Mass only at 9:30 a.m.

“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But
do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather
serve one another through love.” Galatians 5:13
We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the good
life.” But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom. St.
Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve
one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on
earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.
mismos.
