Day that his father Juan’s recuperation has been excellent. While home
in El Salvador Fr. Denis has had the opportunity for a three day spiritual
retreat, which has renewed and energized him. He is very grateful for
all the prayers from “up here” that have arrived “down there” and given
the Jacinto Masin family such healing and peace. Fr. Denis plans to

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Poor nutrition is a clear source of numerous ailments. Lack of vitamin
C causes scurvy. A serious deficit in vitamin D can lead to weakened
bones and osteoporosis. When a person does not have enough protein in
his or her diet they can suffer from kwashiorkor, a wasting disease in
which the body attacks its own tissues. Night vision is affected when a
person is not consuming enough vitamin A. We also know that to stay
healthy, we can't just eat enough food. We must eat the right kinds of
foods, that is, a balanced, wholesome diet. While pizza includes several
food groups (grains, dairy, meat, and sometimes even vegetables), a diet
of pizza alone is not life-sustaining in the long term.
The Gospel of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes for this feast
of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ starts out with a curious
verse. "Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, and he
healed those who needed to be cured" (Lk 9:11). Luke, the writer who
crafts his Gospel in such detail, weaves together the eucharistic narrative
of the loaves and fishes, with the preaching of the good news and the
healing of the sick. It is a signal of what our Sunday celebration is for us
today.
The Eucharist has always been a sacrament of nourishment and healing. We hear the word proclaimed at Sunday Mass and we discover
Christ present among us in the breaking of the bread. The abundance of
grace is always greater than we can take in, signified by the leftovers in
the Gospel story. Through the Eucharist healing takes place as well. We
are reconciled to God in the Eucharist, and made one with our God in the
reception of Communion. And from the Mass members of the community take the healing presence of Christ to those who are sick or shut-in so
that his comfort is shared. Christ is healing and nourishment for all.

Deacons Corner: We will soon begin reading the gospel of Luke. Before leaving the gospel of John, it would be good to understand John and
his gospel. John dealt with a basic question, "Who is Jesus of Nazareth?"
John develops his gospel to answer this question using compelling evidence and eye-witness testimony. John, the youngest of the twelve apostles, wrote his gospel late in life, around 100 AD, in the city of Ephesus,
a Greek-speaking center of commerce and culture. By that time the vast
majority of Christians were no longer converts from Jewish communities, but people who lived in a world dominated by the culture, thought,
and worldview of Greece and Rome. John appealed to their powers of
reason and reflection to consider who Jesus claimed to be. John’s style
and focus is very different from the other three gospel accounts by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. John’s gospel is more reflective, profound, and
spiritual. St. Augustine likens John to the eagle who can soar higher than
any other bird, because John’s “spiritual understanding compared to the
eagle, has elevated his preaching higher, and far more sublimely, than
the other three.” John had 70 years from Jesus’ death and resurrection to
reflect upon what Jesus had said and done. He goes beyond the literal
message and historical facts to help people understand the deeper spiritual meaning of Jesus himself, including his teaching, life, and miracles.
John carefully selected seven statements and seven signs to answer the
question, “Who is Jesus and how can we be certain that his claims are
true?” These statements each begin with the declaration “I am:”
“I am the bread of life” (6:35, 41, 48-51)
“I am the light of the world” (8:12, 9:5)
“I am the door of the sheep” (10:7, 9)
“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd gives his life for the
sheep” (10:11,14)
“I am the resurrection and the life” (11:25)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (14:6)
“I am the true vine” (15:1,5)
John teaches us who Jesus is through the "I am."
Worship Corner: The Sunday cycle is divided into three years, labeled
A, B, and C. 2011was Year A. 2012 was Year B, 2013 is Year C, etc. In
Year A, we read mostly from the Gospel of Matthew. In Year B, we read
the Gospel of Mark and chapter 6 of the Gospel of John. In Year C, we
read the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of John is read during the Easter
season in all three years. The first reading, usually from the Old Testament, reflects important themes from the Gospel reading. The second
reading is usually from one of the epistles, a letter written to an early
church community. These letters are read semi-continuously.
Each Sunday, we pick up close to where we left off the Sunday before,
though some passages are never read. The year of the cycle does not
change on January 1, but on the First Sunday of Advent which is the
beginning of the liturgical year. As you prepare for the Sunday readings
don’t forget to utilize the website at www.liturgy.slu.edu.

As you prepare for the Sunday readings don’t forget to utilize the website at www.liturgy.slu.edu.
The Year of Faith — From the Catholic Diocese of Richmond Instruction for Sacraments First Holy Communion
“Children’s preparation for first reception of the Eucharist begins in the
home. The family has the most important role in communicating the
Christian and human values that form the foundation for a child’s understanding of the Eucharist. Children who participate with their family in
the Mass experience the Eucharistic mystery in an initial way and
gradually learn to join with the liturgical assembly in prayer.”
As the primary teachers of children, parents pass on their knowledge of
the faith, and, by their example, help to develop Christian values. Such
“family catechesis...precedes, accompanies and enriches all other forms
of catechesis.” It is naturally “more witnessed to than taught, more
occasional than systematic, more ongoing and daily than structured into
periods.” Indeed, “It is through the example of mothers and fathers,
grandparents, siblings, and extended family members that one most
concretely witnesses how to live a Christian life.”

#64 Did You Know? The Dangers of Webcams A webcam is a video camera that is connected to a user’s computer and is most often positioned on top
of the user’s computer monitor. When activated in conjunction with an online
service, the webcam will permit the user to transmit video images of himself
or herself to others in real time. Webcams can be a source of convenience and
amusement for viewing friends from other schools or relatives who live out of
state. Unfortunately, due to its use by child molesters who search the Internet
for unsuspecting children, the webcam is the single most dangerous peripheral
device that can be attached to a child’s or young person’s computer. Prior to
connecting a webcam or a microphone to a computer, specific rules should be
established to help protect the safety of everyone involved. For information on
how you can become more informed and involved in keeping our children
safe, please call the parish office, or for particular help you may call Ms.
Maryjane Fuller 359-5661 ext. 203. Source: www.virtusonline.org/virtus

EL CUERPO Y LA SANGRE DE CRISTO
Reflexiones
El Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo
La historia del milagro del cuerpo y la sangre de
Cristo es contada en este Evangelio solamente. Ahora bien,
vale la pena recordar cuando el Profeta Eliseo dio de comer
a cien personas (2 Re 4, 42-44).

familiar... precede, acompaña y enriquece toda otra
