Bericht des Präsidenten
Wenn euch dieses Nachrichtenblatt erreicht, hat
unsere Jahreshauptversammlung schon stattgefunden und ihr seid
über die Resultate voll
informiert. Da mein Bericht für dieses Nachrichtenblatt schon am 8.
Februar eingereicht werden muss, bin ich noch
nicht in der Lage, einen
genauen Bericht über
die Wahlen zu schreiben
– oder was bei dieser Versammlung sonst
noch besprochen wurde, das werde ich
dann in der Aprilausgabe nachholen.
Am Dienstag, den 19. Januar hatte Oktoberfest Inc. ihre Jahreshauptversammlung. Obwohl man sagen kann, dass das Oktoberfest
ein voller Erfolg gewesen ist – denn mehr
als 2 Milionen Menschen erlebten die Oktoberfestparade am Fersehen – und fast alle
Festhallen waren an bestimmten Tagen
ausverkauft, trotzdem hatte Oktoberfest Inc.
einen Verlust von $ 98,000.00 zu verzeichnen. Im Vergleich konnte der Concordia
Klub genau das Gegenteil behaupten, denn
wir haben finanziell so gut wie noch nie abgeschnitten. Wir hoffen nur, dass Oktoberfest Inc. im Jahre 2010 bessere Resultate verCome visit us at our Production Facility on

zeichnen kann. Bei der Jahreshauptversammlung wurde Harry Vogt, der ehemalige
Präsident des Deutsch-Kanadischem Jagdund Fischverein, zum 2. Vice-Präsident von
Oktoberfest Inc. gewählt unser Joe Liebel
wurde ebenfalls als einer der Direktoren
gewählt. Herzlichen Glückwunsch an beide,
denn wir wissen, sie werden ihr Bestes tun.
Die „Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Deutschen
Klubs vom Kreise Waterloo“ und die
„Deutsch-Kanadische Gedächtnis Stiftung“
hatten auch ihre Jahreshauptversammlungen. Bei beiden Vereinen wurden die gleichen Direktoren wieder gewählt; herzlichen
Glückwunsch an alle.
Am Samstag, den 13. März findet wieder
unser Präsidenten-Ball statt; es bleiben nur
noch einige Tage, um Eintrittskarten zu
kaufen; wer es noch nicht getan hat, muss
sich also beeilen! Wie ihr alle wisst, ist
diese Veranstaltung der Höhepunkt des
Jahres für unseren Klub und es wäre doch
wunderbar, wenn unsere Halle wieder ausverkauft sein würde. Wir wünschen uns
besseres Wetter als vor 2 Jahren und ich
hoffe, viele von euch an diesem Abend
begrüßen zu dürfen.
Ostern ist dieses Jahr sehr früh, schon am 4.
April. Wie üblich werden wir wieder 2
Sitzungen für unser Oster-Brunch und
Dinner haben: die erste um 12 Uhr mittags,
und die zweite um 17 Uhr. Wie in vergangenen Jahren wird unser Chef Andreas

Am Samstag, den 10 April veranstaltet
unsere Frauengruppe wieder ihr jährliches
Bockbierfest. Zu diesem Anlass wird unsere
neue Miss Concordia gekrönt und wir apellieren an alle Gruppen auch mit einer
Spende unser Miss Concordia Komitee zu
unterstützen. Auch würden sich unsere
Frauen sehr freuen, wenn wir alle beim
Bockbierfest mitmachen würden, denn sie
selber sind immer sehr hilfsbereit wenn es
gilt, dem Klub zu helfen.
Ich hoffe, Euch alle beim Präsidenten-Ball,
beim Bockbierfest, im Klub und auf der
Farm zu sehen.

President’s Report
By the time you read this bulletin, our
Annual Membership Meeting will have
taken place and most members will be
familiar with the results. Since the deadline
for submission to this bulletin is Feb. 8th, I
am unable to report on the results of the
election or any other item that might have
been brought forward at the meeting. Instead, I will do so in detail in the April bulletin.
Oktoberfest Inc. had their Annual Meeting
on Tuesday, January 19th. While the festival
should be considered a success, with over
two million viewers watching the Oktoberfest Parade and increased attendance at
most Festhalls, surprisingly Oktoberfest Inc.
reported a loss of almost $ 98,000.00. These
results are completely opposite to Concordia’s, as we had the best financial results
ever for our Oktoberfest. Let’s hope that the
financial outcome for Oktoberfest Inc. will
improve in 2010. On a high note, Harry
Vogt, the Past President of the German-
Canadian Hunting & Fishing Club, was elected as the 2nd Vice-President of Oktoberfest
Inc, and our own Joe Liebel was elected as a
Director of the Inc. Congratulations to both,
as I know they will do an outstanding job.
Both the Co-Operative Council of the German Clubs of Waterloo Region and the German-Canadian Remembrance Society also
had their Annual Meetings, and last year’s
slate of Officers was returned by acclamation in both cases. Congratulations to all.
Saturday, March 13th, will be our Presidents Ball, and there are only a few days
remaining to get your tickets if you have not
already done so. This event, as you know, is
the highlight on the Concordia Club social
calender, and it would be wonderful to have
a full house. Let’s hope the weather is on
our side this year and we will be spared a
snow storm similar to the one two years
ago. I hope to see many of you at this event.
Easter is early this year, on Sunday, April
4th. As always, we will have two sittings for
our Easter Brunch: the first one at 12:00 PM
and the second one at 5:00 PM. As in the
past, Chef Andreas will ensure that your
palettes as well as your eyes will be delighted. Make your reservations early to avoid
disappointment.
On Saturday, April 10th, the Ladies Group
will host their annual Bockbierfest. We will
be crowning our new Miss Concordia at this
event, and so we are asking the Groups to
support our Miss by making a donation to
the Miss Concordia Committee. As well, the
Ladies would very much appreciate the
support of all our members at Bockbierfest,
as they have always given a helping hand
whenever the Club has asked for it.

die Galaveranstaltung des
Jahres in feierlichen Rahmen in unserer Halle statt!
Auch Sie können mit dabei
sein, denn Karten für diese
Veranstaltung gibt es im
Klubbüro zum Preis von
nur $38.- im Vorverkauf. Karten am Tag der
Veranstaltung, sowie an der Abendkasse
kosten $45.-. Natürlich schließt dieser Preis
eine Cocktailstunde, Häppchen, Vorspeise
mit Festessen und was noch so alles dazugehört. Dunkler Anzug ist erwünscht, denn zu
diesem würdigen Anlass erwarten wir allerhand

Ich möchte Sie gerne noch einmal darauf
hinweisen, dass wir ein tolles Freitagabend
Buffet in der Schenke anbieten. Es erfreut
sich ständiger Beliebtheit und viele unserer
Gäste sind regelmäßig mit dabei. Natürlich
wechseln wir die Speisen von Woche zu
Woche, damit es nicht langweilig wird! Für
nur $ 14.95 haben sie ein volles Buffet einschließlich Nachspeise. Machen Sie davon

Schon heute möchte ich Sie auf unsere beiden Osterveranstaltungen aufmerksam machen. Ostern fällt dieses Jahr auf den 4.
April. Der Klub wird um 12 Uhr zum
Brunch geöffnet sein und dann wieder um
17 Uhr zum Buffet. Ein farbenfrohes und
leckeres Buffet mit großer Auswahl wartet
auf alle unsere Gäste!. Auch Sie werden bestimmt damit zufrieden sein, denn Chef
Andreas plant mal wieder was besonders
schmackhaftes und farbenfreudiges!
Tischreservierungen nehmen wir gerne entgegen und unser Personal freut sich schon
heute auf Ihren Besuch!
Preis pro Person ist gleich wie im Vorjahr: $
19.95 pro Person, Kinder zwischen 4 und 12
bezahlen die Hälfte (zuzüglich Steuern und
Bedienungsgeld).
Sonderaktionen
Wie oben schon mal angesprochen, haben
wir im Moment zwei Sonderaktionen: zum
ersten bieten wir eine Flasche des Weingutes Josefs in der Niagara Gegend zum Sonderpreis von nur $ 15.- pro Flasche an
(zuzüglich Steuern und Bedienungsgeld).
Zum Zweiten haben wir Dienstagnachmittags bis Freitagnachmittags zwischen 15
und 17 Uhr eine „Happy Hour“ mit Bier der
Muskoka Brauerei. Hierbei gibt’s ein 0,3l
Glass zu nur $ 2,50. Es sollte auch noch
dazu vermerkt werden, daß dieses Bier beim
nordamerikanischen Brauereiwettbewerb
im Novemer 2009 die Goldmedallie gewonnen hat!!
Unsere Schenke ist auf jeden Fall ein Platz,
wo man kostengünstig „einkehren“ kann!!

President’s Ball
Do you have your tickets for this Gala event
already? If not, there is probably still a good
chance to get yours! After all, the annual
Presidents Ball ranks very high on the list of
special club events. We try to do our utmost
in culinary offerings and during that
evening many have the chance to speak to
your local elected officials – and even if it is
only to say a friendly “hello”. Who knows,
sometimes it can come in handy when you
need help with whatever it may be, be it
pension, health care, snow plowing and
much more! A pro pos snow: two years ago
this event was “snowed” out, meaning yes,
it took place but with vastly reduced participants! Certainly we'll hope that the weather will be more cooperative and allow us all
to celebrate our culture!
Ticket price has not changed and is still $
38.- per person including applicable taxes
(the day of the event however they are $ 45.ea) For this you get a cocktail hour with
appetizers as well as a special gourmet dinner and entertainment by the Black Forest
Band. This event is on March 13th! Winter
will be almost over by then!!
Friday Evening Buffet
Our Buffet on Friday evenings is doing very
well and I would like to take this opportunity to re-iterate this fact. We offer a wide
variety of choices, some German, some not

so German, but in order to keep everything
interesting and colorful we bring new choices into the rotation on a continuous basis.
Of course our customers have learned to
appreciate this and I guess that’s why we are
fairly successful with this evening as well.
For only $ 14.95 (same price as in March 09)
we offer a buffet featuring some of our main
staples on our menu. Consider the fact that
somewhere else you pay at least that much
for just the main course!) This price
includes even the dessert! Enjoy with this

Sunday, April 4th . Again, as we have done
in past years, we will be having two seatings, one at Lunch, starting at noon and the
other for our supper buffet at 5pm. Both buffets will be colorful, springlike and of
course delicious as usual. There is a small
difference between them, as the lunch one
is more like a “brunch” type Easter Buffet,
while the evening one is a typical Easter
Smörgåsbord. Chef Andreas and all his
cooks and helpers in the kitchen are planning to make this event as outstanding as
we’ve seen them in the past. There is no
doubt in my mind that it will be excellent!
Table reservations can be made here in the
club office. Prices are the same as last year:
$ 19.95 per Person. Children between 4 and
12 pay half price and children under 4 are
free. (Plus applicable taxes and gratuity)

Die Vertreibung der Deutschen aus Osteuropa
das Thema der “Genocide Week” 2010
Liebe Mitglieder und Freunde.
Wie in den vergangenen Jahren so wird
auch dieses Jahr eine sogenannte
Genocide Week vom 21. bis zum 27.
März 2010 in Canada stattfinden. Bei
dieser Gelegenheit wird ein Genozid
(Völkermord) zum Thema im Vordergrund stehen. In den vergangenen Jahren
gehörte dazu das Verhungern der
Ukrainer unter Stalin, die Leiden der
Indianer, das Unrecht gegen die Palästinenser u.a.
Die Hauptveranstaltung findet am 24.
März an der Universität von Toronto
statt. Veranstaltet wird die Genocide
Week von der Organisation Canadians
for Genocide Education (CGE), ein
Verband, dem 48 ethnische Gruppen angehören. Auch der DKK ist Mitglied der
CGE.
Dieses Jahr wurde durch den Einsatz des
DKKs „Die Vertreibung der Deutschen
aus Osteuropa als Thema für die
Genocide Week gewählt. Prof. Dr. Alfred
de Zayas, ehemaliger Sekretär der
Human Rights Commission in Genf und
Autor vieler Bücher, konnte als Gast-
sprecher für diese Feier verpflichtet werden.
Vor 60 Jahren herrschte enormes Leid in
Deutschland. Ungefähr 15 Millionen
Menschen wurden aus den ehemaligen
deutschen Ostgebieten vertrieben. Sie
wurden vertrieben nicht weil sie
Schlechtes getan hatten, sondern weil sie
Deutsche waren. Mehr als zwei Millionen wurden umgebracht, viele durch
unmenschliche Greueltaten. Mehr als
zwei Millionen Frauen wurden vergewaltigt. Ein wahrer Genozid, und trotzdem wird er immer noch nicht gebührend gewürdigt. Der Deutschkanadische Kongreß versucht dieses Übersehen wenigstens in Kanada zu korrigieren.
Wir brauchen Ihre Unterstützung, damit
diese Veranstaltung ein Erfolg wird.
Kommen Sie am 24. März zu der Veranstaltung in Toronto und bringen Sie
Freunde mit. Falls genügend Interesse
besteht könnten wir einen Bus mieten.
Der Eintritt beträgt $10.00, um die
Kosten des Fluges von Prof. Dr. de Zayas

Wir trafen uns am 3. Februar im Club. Anwesend
waren 17 Mitglieder und ein Gast, Roswitha, die
Tochter von Ernst Klarner. Herzlich willkommen
Roswitha. Und dann ist Ernie Dyck unserer Gruppe
beigetreten. Wir freuen uns über jedes neue Mitglied!
Unser Präsident Fred Heix eröffnete die Versammlung pünktlich um 15.00 Uhr. Fred wies uns auf die
kommenden Veranstaltungen hin, mit besonderer
Aufmerksamkeit für die Vorstandswahlen und auch
für den Präsidentenball im Monat März. Wir erhielten einen kurzen Brief von Heidi Nowak, die
vorschlug, daß die Untergruppen eine Spende für
Haiti geben sollten, der Klub stiftet dann jeweils die
gleiche Summe und• die Kanadische Regierung tut
das Gleiche. So werden unsere $50.00 in $200.00
umgewandelt. So sollte man sein Geld anlegen können, wäre das nicht ganz toll?!!!
In den kommenden Wochen werden einige unserer
Mitglieder sich in die sonnigen Länder verziehen,
damit uns der Winter nicht so schrecklich lange
vorkommt. Obwohl wir uns in diesem Jahr
eigentlich nicht beklagen können, aber man soll
sich nicht zu früh freuen, denn der Winter ist ja
auch noch nicht zu Ende.
Unser Geburtstagskind für Februar ist Klara Richter.
Wir wünschen ihr alles Gute und vor allem bleib
gesund.
Der Kaffee und der Kuchen sind natürlich immer
willkommen, und so ging unser gemütlicher
Nachmittag langsam zu Ende. Wir treffen uns
wieder am 3. März.
Fuer den Optimisten ist das Glas halb voll, für den
Pessimisten halb leer. Der Realist verdrückt sich
beizeiten damit er nicht abwaschen muss!

our group with few events planned.
Coming up…
March is here, one more month closer to
spring. Some of the Treffpunkt who love
winter, will be sad to see the snow leave,
however others (like myself) cannot wait for
the warmer weather to prompt me to dig out
the garden tools and tune up my bike. Our
group got through the February “blahs” by
keeping busy. We went bowling on the 12th
with the Concordia Bowlers, which was a
ton of fun… must do that again! We dressed
up as a group of Olympic hopefuls and paraded around Crazy Ladies Night on the
13th. Go Team Canada! At the end of
February, we are planning on heading out to
the Chicopee Tubing park for some “sliding
down a hill very fast while riding a rubber

etc..) with details coming up in future

Wieder ist es Zeit um unsere jungen Damen vom Concordia Klub
aufzufordern, sich für die “Miss Concordia”-Wahl zu bewerben
Die Bewerbungs-Unterlagen sind im Klubbüro erhältlich und sollen

Bei den Bewerbungen ist folgendes zu beachten:

Miss Concordia 2010
Each year a Miss Concordia is crowned!
And that time of year is approaching yet
again.
So where are all the young eligible ladies
ready and eager to become Miss Concordia?
I know you are out there!
The young lady must be at least 18 years of
age, an active member of the Concordia
Club for at least 1 year, may not be married
or divorced, and if possible (not required)
speak the German language. Miss Concordia
2010 will be required to attend various club
functions as well as other functions
throughout the community to represent the
club during the year. Being a former Miss
Concorida myself, I can tell you firsthand
how exciting an opportunity this is! During
my reign I learned soo much about our club
and had the opportunity to meet so many of
our great members that I otherwise may not
have had the chance to get to know and
therefore formed new friends and acquaintances. Your duties will last 1 year but your
wonderful Memories will last a lifetime!

Concordia Chöre
So, we are now in the “Ides of March”! Let’s
hope that this month comes in like a lamb
and leaves like a lamb! The choir had their
annual meeting Monday January 25th. It
was once again, a well run meeting, the
board presented their reports, and there
were no issues or concerns from our members. Congratulations to the entire board,
our members and conductor for a successful
2009! We had our annual elections, and
Adolf Bretz has stepped down after many,
many years on the board. Adolf has agreed
to continue his work behind the scenes, on
one of our many sub-committees, such as
helping organize the next European trip.
The choir is fortunate to have so many volunteers like Adolf, and the entire board and
membership would like to thank him for all
his efforts.

Just a friendly reminder, the Zehrs tape program can only accept tapes from Zehrs, not
the “Superstore”. The choir has also made a
donation to support the efforts of rebuilding
in Haiti. We are so fortunate to live in a
country free from disasters like this.
Upcoming events are the Presidents Ball on
March 13, and the choir will be performing
at the Transylvania club on March 20th, for
their annual “chor abend”. Doors open at
5:30 followed by dinner, a concert of several guest choirs and dancing. It promises to
be a fun evening, and all are welcome to
attend. You can contact the Transylvania
Club for ticket information. Mark your calendars for “All Choirs night” on April 9th.
There is a $2.00 entry fee, and all are welcome to attend an evening of many guest
choir performances, as well as the Concordia Mixed and Male choirs. The choir has
been busy practising for our Spring Concert
program. Dr. Alfred Kunz has once again
put together a fantastic repertoire for this
concert. Here is a sneak peak….our Spring
concert theme this year is “Aber dich gibt’s
nur einmal für mich”. Mark your calendar

Garden Group
On January 13th, Monica Skinner, presented
“A Year of Flora” which took us to four very
different climates and gardens of North
America. The first biome was a desert garden at the end of the flowering season.
Then we travelled to Nunavut, within the
Arctic tundra during the summer. Long days
in a short growing season produces short
grasses, shrubs and flowers. The dramatic
landscape and unique way of life in the
north had everyone’s interest. Our third area
was in B.C., within the temperate rainforest,
and included Butchart Gardens and others.
The final tropical gardens in Barbados, completed a year of travel through space and
time. Monika’s musical selections matched
the seasons of her visual presentation perfectly.
In March, we hope to be able to visit either
the Stratford or Toronto Garden shows,
depending on the weather and driving conditions. Details and plans would have been
discussed at the February meeting.

Inzwischen sind schon wieder zwei Monate
vom neuen Jahr vergangen. Hoffen wir, dass
uns ein besseres Jahr bevorsteht als das letzte Jahr, indem wir zwei wertvolle Mitglieder, Uwe Salewsky und Paul Laroque,

Das neue Jahr hat begonnen. Wir hoffen Sie alle
hatten frohe Feiertage und sind gut ins neue Jahr
gerutscht. Ueber Kaelte brauchen wir uns nicht
zu beklagen. Doch koennen wir uns trotzdem
gluecklich schaetzen, dass wir von keinem Unwetter betroffen sind, wie in anderen Staedten
und Laendern. Aber ich bin sicher, dass wir noch

etwas Bewegung brauchen, eingeladen am
Donnerstag Abend heraus zu kommen und
Tischtennis spielen. Auch erwaehnte ich,
dass unser Hans Malthaner sich fuer die
Vorstandswahlen aufstellen liess; wir unterstuetzen ihn zu dieser Entscheidung, und
