Bericht des Präsidenten
Unser Oster-Buffet war
wieder ausgezeichnet,
mit viel Auswahl für
den Gaumen und dem
Auge ein Genuss. Ein
Kompliment an unsere
Geschäftsführung, Peter,
Ruth, Chef Andreas und
seinem Küchenpersonal.
Am 30. April hatten wir unsere alljährliche
Klubgelände-Reinigung bei herrlichem Wetter. Es hatten sich viele Mitglieder fleissig
daran beteiligt. Herzlichen Dank.
Dank an

der Farm in “The Home on the Range”,
abgehalten von der Outdoor Gruppe.
Ein Aufrichtiges Beileid an die Hinterbliebenen von Brigitte Pastrik. Brigitte war
immer hilfsbereit, wo immer sie gebraucht
wurde. Sie soll stets in unserer Erinnerung
bleiben.
Euer Präsident Karl Braun.
President’s Report
their generous donation towards the purchase of the flowers.
My wife Kathi and I are joining the Choir on
their trip to Germany, Austria, Croatia and
Slovania from June 8th to 29th. Rita
Allmendinger our first Vice, will also take
part on the trip. Peter Schöpke, our 2nd Vice
President, will be in charge until we get
back at the end of June.
I would also like to extend my condolences
to the family of Brigitte Pastrik. Brigitte was
always there to help with the Hall decoration for various Club events. Brigitte, you
will be missed, but not forgotten.
Thank you – I hope there will soon be
warmer weather for us all to enjoy!
Your President Karl Braun
The Easter Buffet at our Club was outstanding again this year with lots of food to
choose from and also very nicely displayed.
I got many compliments from our guests
and I would like to pass them on to our
management, Peter, Ruth, Chef Andreas
along with his kitchen personnel. Thank
you.
On Saturday April 30th we had our annual
spring cleanup at the Club. It was a very
nice day, the sun was shining for a change
and we got a lot of work done. I want to give
a big thank you to everybody that helped.
Unfortunately it rained again for the Farm
cleanup on the following day. For a couple
of hours everyone worked hard, until we
were all wet from the damp weather.
This year’s spring has been unusually wet
and cool. We will need a few more nice days
to finish up the preparation of the flowerbeds. We thank the various Club groups for

Oktoberfest Tickets
If the sale of our tickets is any indication
for a successful 2011
Oktoberfest
then
we'll have a banner
year!
The demand for our
tickets is at an all time high. For
instance we’ve had more than 100 of
our members line up as well as 100 non
members when we started to sell them
over the counter. Our on line sales over
the internet caused a huge computer
5
crash in Burlington shutting down 400
company web sites! Our provider had to
move us to a separate high volume server to accommodate all the “hits” we
were getting simultaneously. Let me tell
you it was a circus, as our phone lines
were also overloaded with inquiries –
actually to the point that we could not
process credit cards any longer, because
the credit card terminal also uses one of
the phone lines. Finally late Friday
afternoon, May 13th, it was running
smooth and it seems that we'll have the
weekends sold within a few hours.
We have also received many complaint
letters on the topic that the limits per
person are too high, simply because
there are organized groups of people
purchasing the maximum of tickets,
regardless whether or not they need
them. The writers could be correct as
we also find our tickets being sold for a
much higher price on sites like kijiji or
e-bay.
White Asparagus Menu
The last week of May as well as the first
week in June we’ll feature our special
Menu with “White Asparagus Meals”!!
This delicacy can be enjoyed right here
in the Schenke! We purchase this delicacy from a farmer within 100 Km distance and it is a guaranteed fresh product, as we pick it up ourselves and prepare it without delay! The special menu
is available with certain exceptions during these two weeks. It is not available
on Tuesday evening May 31st (but
lunch is a yes, not available Thursday
Chef's night and not available Saturday
(June 4th) lunch “while supplies
last”!!!!! We suggest to please call
ahead!
Gourmet night beer pairing
Yes, we are working on a special
Gourmet Night with a “Contemporary
Germanic” Theme. Our guest Chef
comes from the well known “41 King
Street” restaurant in Kitchener and
wants to prepare dishes called “tastes
of the region” from a bio raised pig guaranteed without growth hormones and
things of that nature. Actually the animal comes from Punkee Doodle Corners
and is especially raised for our purpose.
The meal will be served in 5 different
courses and this time around we’ll pair
it not with wine, but with appetizing
different beer products. We’ll limit this
event to 80 persons and cost will be $
75.- per Person plus applicable taxes. It
will include of course the various
brewed beverages. Reservations are
required! Call our office. (this event is
pending “not confirmed at the time of
printing”, therefore, please call ahead)
Fathers Day Brunch
June 19th is the magic date to pay a little tribute to our fathers and of course
we offer our brunch on that day in the
Schenke! Don’t forget to book your table
early!
Patio lunch and supper
When we are on this subject: of course
this is also the time to come on out and
to enjoy what our beautiful patio has to
offer. Be it for lunch or supper – it’s the
ideal place to enjoy company! I don’t
think there are too many places in town
like ours! Many of our guests confirm
this and of course compliment us on
how beautiful the setting of our patio
really is. Enjoy!
I am sorry, but I am out of time to submit a German translation of my report –
this is because we’ve had ongoing
issues with our on line ticket sales and
the publishing deadline is here. I will
however try my best to have the German
back for the next issue of the
Nachrichten.
With best regards, Peter Pijet

Hello Karneval Friends !
June!!! Warm weather is here and summer is
upon us! Even though the Karneval events
have come to an end we are enjoying attending Club Events. The Garde girls performed
at the Downtown Bridgeport Community
Center in April to a small but well received
audience. Well done girls on an amazing
season!
Some events to mark on your Calendar are
the Karneval Opening on November 12th
and Crazy Ladies Night on February 18,
2012. This event is a costume party for both
7
women and men! Don’t let the name fool
you, we do have some very crazy looking
ladies (men) attend!
We always welcome new members to join
us! Call Juergen at 519-745-5617 for information.
Have a wonderful summer!
Until next time…

Campers
Summer is finally here, which means lots to
report from the Campers!!
In spite of the somewhat rainy weather,
there was a good turnout for Farm Cleanup,
and a lot was accomplished. Thanks to
everyone who pitched in, and thanks to the
Farm Committee for organizing everything.
If you weren’t there, you missed out on
some great Pea Soup!!
Our first event of the season, is coming up
on June 11th, and is our Opening Picnic,
and Farm Olympics!
This is a change from previous years when a
Soccer Tournament was held, and we feel
this will appeal to a much larger group to
participate. The “Olympic Events” are
geared towards just about everyone, and
every age group. (there will be no Pole
Vault, or 100m race) Most of the games will
involve more luck than skill, as anyone who
has played bocce at the farm will tell you!
Come and join us for an afternoon of fun,
and an evening of dancing to the music of
the Oktoberfest Award winning band,
“Seven Castles”
Games registration is from 11am to Noon
($5 per “athlete”), the kitchen and bar also
open at 11.
Our next event, is our Canada Day
Celebration on Saturday July 2nd.
We will be holding the annual beach
Volleyball tournament with registration
from 11am to Noon ($5 per person), and the
tournament starting at 1pm.
Something new and exciting for this year,
will be the Launching of a Hot Air balloon
from the Farm! There is room for 2 passen-
gers, and we’ll have a draw at 5pm from
everyone who makes a $20 donation towards the fireworks. (all other donations are
graciously accepted) For safety reasons, passengers must be over 10 years of age, and
physically able to climb in and out of the
basket. Open shoes such as sandals are not
allowed.
This will be a great opportunity to see the
whole process of getting a balloon
launched, up close and personal.
Dance to the tunes of Canada’s Premier
Polka Band, “The Black Forest Band”
Of course we will also have our traditional
fireworks extravaganza after dark!
Mark both of these dates on your calendar,
as well as August 27th, which is our Closing
Picnic!
Don’t forget to check our calendar of events
on the Farm page of the club web site, where
we will list other events such as Euchre and
Poker nights, as well as weekly specials
from the kitchen.
If you have any questions about any of our
events, you can ask on our facebook page, or
email us at [email protected].
Hope to see everyone out at the Farm this
summer!!

MISS CONCORDIA 2011
Kyla Pfister
Miss Concordia 2011
Acceptance Speech
Guten Abend Meine Damen und Herren,
My name is Kyla Pfister and I would like to
thank the Concordia Club for giving me this
honour of representing you as Miss
Concordia 2011. I am excited and look forward to this year’s upcoming events.
I am a graduate from Conestoga College,
with a diploma in Recreation and
Leisure Services and post graduate in
Event Management. I am presently
employed at Saint Luke’s Place, as a
Therapeutic
and
Recreation
Coordinator in long term care.
One of my fondest memories as a child,
was getting dressed up in my tracht and
attending various events at the club. I
became a member of the Concordia
Club in 2006 in order to explore my
German heritage. My involvement
within the club includes being a
camper at the farm, a member of the
Outdoor Group and the Treffpunkt as
well as serving on 2 committees, the
Campers and the Outdoor Group.
Being Miss Concordia, will create many
amazing experiences, it will further my
involvement within the club, by attending various events, meet new members
and will be a great way to honour my
late father, – Wolfgang. I know he
would be proud of me today.
Congratulations Kristen on your successful reign as Miss Concordia 2010
and I wish you all the best. Sincere
thanks to Alexandria and the Miss
Concordia committee for giving me European Vision

her year representing the club and I hope
she has as good of a time as I did.
Alexandria Thoene, my manager for the
year. You guided me through this year,
always encouraging me to meet new people
and enjoy this opportunity to its fullest.
Because of you I was always where I needed
to be, dressed as needed, and on time.
Thank you for all the encouragement, the
guidance and the good times.
I could share so many stories about my ventures over the last year, but I am assuming
that everyone is just as anxious as I am to
see who our new Miss will be for this year.
So I’d like to say thank you once more, and
I look forward to continuing to share laughs
and good times with everyone from the club
in the years to come.
Kristen Storer
Miss Concordia 2010
Farewell Speech
First I’d like to start off by saying thank you
to everyone for making my year as Miss
Concordia a truly enjoyable one. I have had
the opportunity to meet many of the club’s
members as well as a variety of other people
in our community through various events I
have attended. Every event I went to became
another learning experience for me while allowing me to share the celebration of our
German culture with so many different people.
I am fortunate to have spent my year as Miss
Concordia with Werner during his last year
as the club’s president and I wish all the
best to Karl Brown in his years to come as
our new president. I would also like to wish
the new Miss of 2011-2012 all the best in

Treffpunkt
The Treffpunkt Group held our first ever
Frühlingsfest on May 6th. The Golden Keys
set the atmosphere with a mix of polka and
rock & roll. Many people enjoyed the decor,
including some sofas and pub tables as well
as the photo booth set up by Fred Trautrim.
The dance committee did an awesome job!

ribs for lunch. There will be games and
prizes for both adults and children. Bring
the whole family out to the Concordia Farm
(Home on the Range) we have something for
the entire family.
May 14 and 15 was our annual Rice Lake
fishing trip. The trip is totally booked and I
will give you the details in next months bulletin as to who did what and how many fish
we caught.
On May 29 we are canoeing the Grand. For
some reason we have had problems getting
enough people to go on this excursion.
All of the events the Outdoor Group are having are subsidized by the funds we make at
Oktoberfest and your membership dues. We
will be collecting your dues of $10.00 at
Fathers Day Picnic and will have your membership cards on hand. If you can not make
Fathers Day and would like to be an Outdoor Group Member, you can drop a check
off at our mail box in the Concordia Club.
We will mail you your membership card.
On July 17th we will be having our Horse
Back Riding trip at Outback Adventures on
Northfield Drive. If you like to ride and eat
we will be having a BBQ that same day. I
will give everyone more details closer to the
date or you can sign up at Fathers Day.
Thanks for now and take care.

Liebe Mitglieder,
am 16. April fand unser gemütliches Beisammensein statt.
Der Termin für unser Piknik steht
noch nicht fest. Sobald wir Bescheid wissen, wird jeder benachrichtigt.
Vom 16-18 August werden wir in
Grand Bend sein.
Wir möchten uns noch bei Herrn
Werner Schlüter bedanken, für
seine ausgezeichnete Arbeit und
Einsatz für den Concordia Klub.
Gleichzeitig heissen wir Herrn
Karl Braun als unseren jetzigen
Präsidenten willkommen, und
wünschen ihm viel Erfolg.
Am 29. April verstarb nach langem Leiden unsere liebe Brigitte
Pastrik.
guter Erinnerung bleiben.
Wir möchten hiermit Manfred und
seiner Familie unser aufrichtiges
Beileid aussprechen.

Concordia Choir
All the practise in the winter months, has
finally come together as we performed for our
guests at our annual Spring concert on May
1st. A big thank you to our guests who joined
us, corporate sponsors, and the crew behind
the scenes who decorated the hall, set up
chairs, helped at the door and all the other
jobs that need to be done, to make this a successful event! We hope you enjoyed our program that Dr. Alfred Kunz put together, and
the choir will take these songs and a few more,
in preparation for the “European Tour” in
June. The children’s choir performance was
also a highlight of the show, and congratulations to Angelika Werner for doing such a
great job in getting the kids “Concert Ready”
On May 14th the choirs are invited to perform
at the Hamilton Germania spring concert. On
June 4th the choirs have been invited to per-
00
form at the Mannheim club, to celebrate the
Transylvania’s 60th Anniversary. Shortly after
that the choir departs for Europe and returns
June 22nd.
If you haven’t already, please remember Fred
Trautrim is looking for your support for prizes
at our Annual Chicken BBQ on August 13th at
the farm.
The choir would like to extend our thoughts
and prayers to Elizabeth Krekel and family on
the recent passing of Joseph Krekel. The choir
is very appreciative of your many, many years
of support.
The choir is sending our prayers to Guenter
Mowinski and family. A few of the men were
able to sing for Guenter at Lisard House in
Cambridge. Due to space limitations only a
few were allowed to attend, but we want you
to know the entire choir is thinking of you at
this time.
Yours in song, Mary Mehnert

bester Ordnung. Wir gratulierten unserem
90jaehrigem Geburtstagskind Ernst Klarner,
der den Nachmittag bei bester Laune und
Gesundheit genoss. Noch viele heitere und
gesunde Jahre lieber Ernst!

Concordia Farm.
Ich wünsche euch schönes Wetter für den
Trip im September nach Toronto zur Vorführung “Totem” des Cirque du Soleil.
Tschüss, bis zu unserer Sitzung im Oktober.
Für den Fehler im letzten Bericht, möchte

Our April 13 presentation was by
K-W tree expert, Greg Salvian. Greg
discussed how and when to trim
shrubs and trees. We appreciate Greg
stepping in to fill this important
topic, a change from our initial presenter.
In May, our topic is Water
Gardening, creating and maintaining
ponds. Ponds are a very desirable
element in urban and rural landscapes, especially as they attract animals. We look forward to seeing you
in the Jägerstube on May 11, 2011 at
7:30 for our presentation by Don
Stewart, water garden Specialist.
