Empezó a
su primera serie, The Last Resort (juego de palabras:
de fotografía, como Jacques Henri Lartigue (2003);
Bernd and Hilda Becher (2004); William Klein (2005);
Subversive Images: Surrealism, Film and Photography
prestigiosas publicaciones inglesas como Spectator o The
y Gauguin (The Yellow House: Van Gogh, Gauguin and Nine
Turbulent Weeks in Arles), John Constable (Constable in
Love: Love, Landscape, Money and the Making of a Great
Painter) o Lucien Freud (Man with a Blue Scarf: On Sitting
for a Portrait by Lucien Freud).

Ligeramente desenfocado

Matadero Madrid is a great cultural project for
twenty-first century Madrid. It will be a public space open
to the city, the neighbourhood and the world, with a clear
social and cultural function in which the public will also
act as an “agent”, as well as an intercultural space that
reflects the diversity of Madrid’s population and helps
dynamise city life.
Matadero Madrid seeks to reinforce the city’s
image abroad in order to become a new cultural icon
and contribute to the dissemination of Madrid’s
increasingly outstanding role among the large
European cultural capitals. A new centre of the city
will be located where the southwest extension of the
Prado-Recoletos cultural axis meets the future large
Manzanares Avenue. Matadero Madrid will contribute
to prolonging the centre of Madrid to the Manzanares
River and will endow the urban space in the south of
Madrid and the districts of Arganzuela and Usera with
artistic identity. This singular space of great beauty
aspires to become a cultural symbol of Madrid, a
renewed offer of cultural facilities and activities for
Madrid residents and a new icon that will help to
strongly convey Madrid’s image outside the city.

Matadero Madrid will be developed within the
facilities of Madrid’s old municipal slaughterhouse,
designed in 1910 by municipal architect Luis Bellido.
The project’s scope covers an area of the former
municipal supply establishment in the southeastern
sector of the complex, a total of ten buildings, and
in the northwestern sector, which includes the old
stables (headquarters today for the Compañía Nacional
de Danza and the Ballet Nacional de España), the
Clockhouse, the Veal Storehouse, as well as the old
potato storehouse (now a greenhouse). Over 85,000 m2
will be devoted to new cultural uses and facilities where
the Matadero Madrid project will be developed. The
original distribution of these storehouses, which was
designed to facilitate interconnection of all the original
industrial processes, will now favour a continuous
exchange between spaces, disciplines, institutions,
professionals and the public.

ayudas; estudios, talleres y salas
de ensayo; albergue de artistas y “vivero”
de empresas culturales.
La programación en artes plásticas de Matadero
Madrid es extensa y variada, incluyendo:
Matadero Madrid’s plastic arts programme will be
broad and varied and will include:
The ARCO Collection which, thanks to a collaboration
agreement between the Comunidad de Madrid, IFEMA
and the Ayuntamiento de Madrid, will be displayed in
selective temporary shows and by means of relevant
encounters and workshops. This collection covers all
materials and practically all current art trends, from
conceptual keys through expressionism, minimalism,
geometries and figurative art.
A programme of large exhibitions and artistic
installations conceived and produced specifically
for the Matadero Madrid spaces by national and
international artists.
A practical training programme: courses, workshops,
master classes and viewings in all plastic art fields.
Activities encouraging discussion and popularisation
of art, such as round tables, lectures and cycles.

ideas, project development and exhibitions
It is estimated that more than one million people
will participate annually in the activities offered
by Matadero Madrid, ranging from programmes for
creators and professionals to events addressing
a very numerous audience: the residents of
Madrid, Arganzuela and Usera and the millions of
spanish and foreign visitors the city hosts every
year, who are attracted mainly by Madrid’s cultural
offer which now includes Matadero Madrid.
Programmes will revolve around dissemination,
communication, production and interdisciplinary
training in the plastic, visual and scenic arts,
music, literature, architecture, landscaping,
urban planning, design, fashion, gastronomy
and the new media.
Matadero Madrid will be a laboratory for
cutting-edge creation, linked to the city as one of the
social, urban and cultural catalysing elements of our
time. It will also be a tool at the service of public aid to
the various forms of creation today. An ideas forum, a
breeding ground for projects and an exceptional showcase
for the most modern creative developments, Matadero
Madrid aims to be a point of reference for the artistic
community and the general public, with a continuous,
unique programme designed to stimulate and display the
main trends in each field of contemporary creation.

Transdisciplinary activity in Matadero
Madrid will be encouraged by the action of:
Intermediae, an initiative of the
Ayuntamiento de Madrid’s Arts Area,
which will act as a catalyst for creators and
citizens in order to look for and present
alternative forms of expression, creation
and thought. The “process” and production
of transdisciplinary works are Intermediae
Matadero’s two main goals in order to
favour cross activity between the various
disciplines and creative processes.
A programme supporting creation
which will offer artists and cultural
creators a platform for experimentation,
training, production, communication
or exhibition of artistic projects in
all spheres of creation: aid; studios,
workshops and rehearsal rooms; artist
accommodations and an “incubator”
for cultural endeavours.
Matadero Madrid will
place a great emphasis
on music, presenting
its own programme
of concerts, cycles or
festivals in various styles
and receiving those tours
and musical events that
are in keeping with its
programme, such as
“Veranos de la Villa”
(Summer in the City), the
Madrid Jazz Festival or
the Urban Culture Festival.
It will also offer a series
of specialised courses,
seminars and workshops
in music and will make
studios and rehearsal
rooms available for
creators. Furthermore, the
venues offering live music
will comprise a broad,
high-quality nocturnal
musical offer, thus
encouraging one of the
most important manifestations of urban culture. In
spring and summer, the
musical programme will
go out on the street and
occupy Matadero Madrid’s
open air spaces.
Architecture, urban
planning and modern landscaping, which have emerged
as new forms of artistic
expression, will have a lasting
presence in Matadero Madrid.
The promotion, experimentation and dissemination of
today’s architecture are the
main objectives of Matadero
Madrid’s architectural centre,
which will collaborate with the
Foundation of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid.
The activities planned include
establishing an international ephemeral architecture
contest that will eventually
materialise in an architecturally valuable pavilion on the
Matadero Madrid grounds.
This building will house
exhibitions, activities, artistic
performances and receptions.
Matadero Madrid will focus on driving creation and
its creation support programme is an essential strategic
line. Courses, workshops, lectures, discussions and
encounters will be scheduled in which the protagonists
of the art world will be able to share and compare
their ideas and experiences. Matadero Madrid will be a
new, indispensable meeting place for artists and creators,
students and professionals in fields related to cultural
creation, both for the specific audiences of each of the
artistic disciplines represented and for the general public
of Madrid, in addition to being a new point of reference for
the city’s national and international visitors.
Matadero Madrid will be an exhibition centre for the
most innovative and experimental works by both
national and international creators, the headquarters for
Madrid’s foremost cultural projects and a showcase for
what attracts greatest interest on the national
and international scene. This live space will be open to all
fields of creation and will favour encounters and dialogue
Un extenso programa
de actividades que,
desde hoy mismo,
irán ocupando las
instalaciones que se
completarán en 2011
Matadero Madrid will be the space of reference
for the dissemination and promotion of design, a key
vector in the development of culture and the economy.
Thanks to the participation of the Asociación de
Diseñadores de Madrid, DIMAD, all forms of design,
whether graphic, industrial, or web, will have a permanent
place in its programmes, which will include exhibitions,
experimental projects and training activities. A prestigious
team of designers made Matadero Madrid’s logo, the
result of the collaboration between DIMAD and the
Ayuntamiento de Madrid. This design centre, conceived
as an integral unit, will include everything from the
most experimental aspects to educational activities
and everyday creativity. It will be a another platform for
interaction between companies, institutions, design
professionals, students and the general public.
While its space is being refurbished, Matadero Madrid
will offer activities that provide a preview of what Madrid’s
great centre for modern creation will eventually be. Matadero
Madrid already provided the setting for cultural events such
as the Urban Culture Festival and Veranos de la Villa in
2005, and in 2006 it will also welcome other events such
as PHotoEspaña and La Noche Blanca (The White Night).
During the last quarter of the year, Intermediæ and the
scenic arts will be installed with their own programmes.
Plastic arts (Centro de Arte Actual Colección ARCO),
literature (Casa del Lector) and the artistic installations
programme will start up their projects and carry out activities
in open spaces from 2007 onward.
The year 2009 will see the opening of the architecture,
design, cinema and scenic arts centres and the creation
support programme and the initiation of their regular
programmes. Also in 2009, Matadero Street will inaugurate
its cultural leisure area with live music venues, cafe theatre,
book, music, video, art and design shops that will begin to
show what this area will be in the future.
A wide programme
of activities which,
starting today, will

facilities to be
completed in 2011

actual. También acogerá los grandes festivales y
eventos de la cartelera madrileña, que contribuirán
a convertir Matadero Madrid en el escenario
de las últimas propuestas escénicas.
Matadero Madrid will devote a substantial part
of its facilities and resources to theatre and dance
programmes open to different genres, audiences and
approaches: large theatrical productions, performance
art, dramatised readings, multidisciplinary shows,
street theatre, choreographies, projections, monographic
works, workshops and master classes.
The project will include a space reserved for reflection and
discussion that will facilitate comparison of avant-garde
proposals in the new scenic languages. It will be managed
and scheduled by the Teatro Español.
The presence of the Compañía Nacional de Danza and the
Ballet Nacional de España will also serve to stimulate
creation and the most up-to-date choreographic training.
Matadero Madrid will also welcome the large festivals and
events on Madrid’s agenda making it the setting for the
most daring new projects.
Matadero Madrid will be a platform for dissemination
and promotion of literature. It will offer a place to acquaint
people with reading and literature: the Casa del Lector
(The Reader’s House). Backed by the Fundación Germán
Sánchez Ruipérez, the Casa del Lector will be in charge
of activities designed to promote an encounter between
children, teenagers, adults and reading.
The Casa del Lector will be a space for information,
training, research, experimentation and dissemination of
reading in line with a broad concept that covers everything
from the printed page to the new communication media
and from linguistic to audiovisual aspects and centres
particularly on the role played by the new technologies
and media. It is based on the idea that reading is a tool
providing access to knowledge.

Matadero Madrid
Matadero Madrid’s programme, as a platform and
showcase for the best part of Madrid’s contemporary
cultural scene, will be highly international with particular
attention placed on Latin America, in terms of the
authors participating, its desire to collaborate with
other institutions and the repercussions of many of its
activities outside Spain.
The area containing Madrid’s former municipal
slaughterhouse, one of the most unique and interesting
industrial establishments in the city’s twentieth-century
architecture, is about to become Matadero Madrid. The
Ayuntamiento de Madrid, in collaboration with public
and private entities, is now promoting the recovery of a
148,300-m2 plot in the city centre for a new, ambitiously
conceived cultural use. The buildings will be outfitted to
house the future facilities of a great contemporary project
included in the general plan for creation and improvement
of the large metropolitan cultural centres Centro Conde
Duque “La memoria” and Palacio de Comunicaciones
“La ciudad”. It will be a great cultural centre for all city
inhabitants with open free access to an exceptional
setting with an atmosphere nourished by the presence
of the most diverse artistic forms and a complementary
offer of activities and services including open air zones for
concerts and shows, restaurants, cafes and night spots,
bookshops and other stores.

Agustín Fernández Mallo
I was up very early today; the stars were
fading. At that very moment, on the kitchen
table, other stars were twinkling in the
background of the computer screen, where
she – still asleep now – had left a note:
that come lapping against the coast; one by
one, relentlessly, like a beating heart being
absorbed into the rhythm of things.
DIVINATION (definition): the foretelling of
future events by interpreting omens
constructed as evidence.
Last night I tried to watch us from that sky,
an arc so bright, so spectral that I could not
sleep a wink.
Diving daily into this sea is an act of faith.
Every 10 years, the World is also something
else. In the rubbish bin opposite the front
door, we’ve got everything.
Later, the radio from the flat next door
announced that two athletes in the Olympic
Games had outrun the stopwatches.
I thought about us, how we ignored time. I
drew back the curtains. The air-conditioning
units on the houses opposite were opening
up like crabs to the sun; a relationship so
sacred it might have been blessed. The
beach still empty. Bicycle wheels had left a
trail in the sand; it looked like the trail of a
reptile, a reptile as ancient as the way we
tend to drink our coffee every morning, sip
by sip.
Islands are not islands. They are
separated from the world by the same thing
that joins them to the world: the sea. Just like
bodies, like skins, like brains,
like hands, like hearts. The sea is the first
communications network, the natural,
primordial network. It needs salt. Salt water
links bodies, sends out messages like waves

Every 10 years, all your body’s cells are
renewed; you’re someone else. But that can
be seen more clearly from the sky.
Yesterday, we went out walking on
the rocks; a lunar landscape. The water in
the rocky pools evaporated, leaving salt.
We collected the salt, put it in clear glass
jars. Before eating it, we examined it,
remarking that every crystal is a microchip
of this island, an electric pulse that links our
food to that of an Eskimo, a Brooklyn
resident, someone who whiles away his
days in a São Paulo suburb. That’s the way
it is with everything.
Today, her note read:
The heart is not a stone; it is the water where
we build the house that everyone knows. They
come from far away. I have found a dog; he
eats our food, sleeps at our door.
I’m not a nudist, I’m just nude – which is not the
same thing.
One day after lunch we got to
thinking about gigantism. How can 2 metres
of DNA fit inside a cell? How is it that our
lungs, unfolded, would cover a surface area
the size of this island? Inside us, there’s a
mapping system bigger than the Planet, and
we wondered about the reason for this
excess. She said that this surplus that grows
inside us is “love for things”; and that’s that.
This morning, her computer screen was
silent, yet it was beating.
Today, by mistake, I received an
e-mail from a stranger, someone who
apparently lives far away. It says that, in his
book La mer (1860), Jules Michelet
describes how, as a child, he struggled in
vain to catch a fish inside the water.
Textually: It seemed to me to be identical to
the element in which it swam, and for a
moment I had the confused idea that the fish
was nothing but water, animal water,
evolved water.
But that continuity of things happens with
everything. I know this because this morning
I rose before dawn, while she was still
asleep. On the kitchen table, on her
computer screen, she had written:
HEART (definition): island of clay.
Later we went swimming.
We were diluted.
Diving daily into this sea is an act of faith.
