Andrus Architecture and Robert
Andrus served as the ice rink design consultant for The Hall Partnership on this State University of
New York project. The Broome
Community College Ice Rink is a
1,000 seat arena attached to the
existing student commons and
snugly fit on the site. Amenities
include dedicated varsity men’s
and women’s locker rooms, two
varsity visitor’s locker rooms and
two additional smaller locker
rooms, coaches offices, a shared
laundry and training rooms as
well as a main lobby, pro-shop,
party room and cafe. The facility
was designed with its own entry
to accommodate the public for
games and events as well connecting into the existing student commons to facilitate student circulation for physical education classes.

Narrative:
The Ann Arbor Ice Cube is a 3-sheet
ice arena comprised of 2 NHL rinks
with 800 seats and an Olympic rink
with 700 seats. The facility also
houses an extensive sports injury
rehabilitation clinic for the University of Michigan Hospitals. Other
facility amenities include a restaurant/sports bar area, hardwood
floor ballet room, figure skating
locker room, team meeting room as
well as 16 locker rooms.

Narrative:
The Nelson Ice Center addition entailed
a single ice sheet addition to an existing rink and swimming pool facility
within an extensive park complex. The
additional rink’s new refrigeration
plant and de-humidification system
was also connected into the existing
rink system while a new resurfacer
room also services both rinks. The
addition has its own entrance, 4 locker
rooms, separate concessions and
offices as well as seating space for
200 spectators.

Narrative:
The Georgetown Township Ice Center
will be a twin NHL sized ice sheet facility with 900 seats on one rink and 500
on the other. Two dedicated high
school locker suites and a collegiate
club locker suite will be accompanied by
8 team locker rooms, 2 referee locker
rooms and a dedicated women’s locker
room. Public amenities will include 2
multi-purpose rooms, skate rental, concessions, large pro-shop, offices and a
large lobby area with trophy cases and
ample seating. Tournament bag storage
is provided on both rinks to aid in reducing the clutter. The decorative precast concrete tilt-up exterior wall panels
are complemented with a dark blue
standing seam metal roof and arched
chord metal roof truss system and an
expansive curtainwall system permitting
daylight to reach deep into the lobby
area.

Narrative:
The Originally named Patterson Ice Center is the
home to West Michigan’s largest youth organization as well as having dedicated locker rooms
to 2 local high school teams. This twin ice
sheet facility has a NHL rink with 800 seats as
well as an Olympic rink with 400 seats. A dedicated figure skating locker room is directly
accessible to the Olympic rink. The building’s
exterior walls are constructed of decorative precast concrete tilt-up panels with integrally cast rigid insulation providing a
thermally sound and durable system.

Narrative:
The Eddie Edgar Ice Center addition and renovation
project entailed adding a new rink with 1,200 seats
and a complete renovation of the existing rink and
building. Essentially the existing exterior walls and
roof were kept in tact while the entire interior was
renovated included relocating /rebuilding the rink
itself, adding 200 new seats, 2 multipurpose
rooms, all new and enlarged locker rooms as well
as a new refrigeration and dehumidification system.
The exterior was designed to be a homogenous
blend of existing and new.

The NHL Skate at Birch Run was the
first NHL endorsed community ice
rink in the world. The NHL size rink
seats 800 while the Olympic rink
seats 400. The mezzanine contains
5 sub-dividable multi-purpose rooms
and a large NHL “Fantasy Zone”
arcade. The exterior evokes images
of hockey with a “puck” canopy set
within a “goalpost” support, center
line and blue line markings as well
as puck accent features. The interior
lobby space continues this theme
with a high-build epoxy flooring

Narrative:
Big Bear Arena is the home of the
Soo Indians Junior “A” Ontario
Hockey League team. This 2 ice rink
facility has 1,100 seats on the Olympic rink and 500 seats on the NHL
rink. Due to poor soil conditions, the
entire complex was engineered and
built on pilings and grade beams. Big
Bear Arena also contains a full health
club with amenities such as a dedicated volleyball court, dedicated basketball court, aerobics room, whirlpool
and steam rooms in addition to an
exercise room. The rink area amenities include multi-purpose rooms, 2
concessions, pro shop and 12 locker
rooms.

Narrative:
The Metairie Ice and Gymnastics Center’s
focus is on figure skating as evidenced by
the Olympic ice rink and extensive gymnastics center. The gymnastics center
amenities include separate locker facilities, trampoline pits, floor exercise mat,
uneven parallel bars, vault and rings
apparatus in addition to a wood dance/
ballet floor and spectator viewing. The
multiple levels are interconnected by a
three-story glass atrium space. The facility is set on an irregular urban site in the
greater New Orleans environs.

Narrative:
The State of Michigan financed renovation of the 5,600 seat historic Coliseum
Building built in 1922 at the State
Fairgrounds for Wayne State University’s
hockey program. The renovation included building a new ice rink in the
existing Coliseum which could also
quickly be adapted for a rodeo, motocross race or equestrian event as well as
adding 4 new varsity locker rooms and
the accessory function rooms. Great
planning was required to thermally seal
the entire envelope of this 77 year old
facility to properly control the humidity
and air infiltration

Narrative:
The Prospect Heights Entertainment Center was
designed as a true multi-purpose venue. The
center has over 10,000 seats for hockey or basketball including 350 “Club Seats” plus 40 private suite boxes. The facility was designed with
sections of retractable bleachers to accommodate
an Olympic rink and a full state-of-the-art concert stage and rigging. Multiple toilet facilities,
concessions and pro-shops ring the exterior of
the upper level with all operations and participant functions on the lower level.
