GA-Deal welcomes Mercedes-Benz to Georgia
Gov. Nathan Deal today made the following statement on the announcement of Mercedes-Benz
USA’s upcoming move to Georgia.
“The relocation of Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. headquarters to Georgia is a huge win for our state,”
said Deal. “This internationally renowned company is a pioneer in the automotive industry and
I’m confident that its legacy of high-quality, innovative products will continue with the help
of the Georgia’s pro-business environment and strategic resources. Much like the many other
global companies headquartered here, Mercedes-Benz will find that Georgia’s community-based,
community-driven support will benefit its employees during this time of transition. I look forward
to building upon our new partnership in the years to come, and I thank Mercedes-Benz for
entrusting its future success to Georgia.”
Gov. Nathan Deal announced today that Georgia’s net tax collections for December totaled
nearly $1.91 billion, an increase of $158 million, or 9 percent, compared to December 2013,
when net collections totaled $1.75 billion.
Chairman Isakson Names Retired Marine Corps Colonel as Staff Director of Senate VA
Committee
WASHINGTON – In his first action as chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’
Affairs, U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today named retired Marine Corps Colonel Thomas
G. Bowman as his staff director for the committee. In addition to his military service, Bowman
also spent almost a decade working in the Department of Veterans Affairs, including as chief of
staff under two former VA Secretaries.
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and David Perdue, R-Ga., cosponsored legislation to approve the Keystone XL pipeline, highlighting the importance of the
project to secure America’s energy future, improve national defense and create tens of thousands
of jobs for Americans.
Wall Street Lose Momentum on Mixed Payrolls Data, Oil
The U.S. stock market ended a volatile week on a down note Friday, with strategists blaming the
slide, in part, on December’s jobs report that revealed a drop in wages.
Slumping oil prices and headlines about a dual hostage crisis in France added to the
negative mood. December’s employment situation report received a mix investor reaction, as the
number of jobs added to the economy was strong, however wage growth ticked down.
The main benchmarks finished lower for the week, which has been marked by sharp
sell-offs on Monday and Tuesday, then big rallies on Wednesday and Thursday. The Dow Jones
Industrial Average moved by triple digits for the fifth session in a row. Friday’s losses put the
main indexes back into negative territory for the year.
The S&P 500 (SPX) closed 17.33 points, or 0.8%, lower at 2,044.81, and ended the week
with a 0.7% loss. Financials and consumer discretionary stocks led the losses on Friday, while all
10 sectors ended lower. Energy sector lost more than 3% over the week, as oil prices continued to
fall.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) slid by 170.50 points, or 1%, at 17,737.37
ending the week 3.5% lower. The Nasdaq Composite (RIXF) finished down 32.12 points, or
0.7%, to 4,704.07, recording a 0.5% loss for the week.

Friday’s much-awaited jobs report:The U.S. economy added 252,000 jobs last month,
while the unemployment rate ticked down to 5.6%.
Other markets: The U.S. oil benchmark (CLG5)dropped, while gold prices (GCG5)
gained. Asian stock markets closed mixed, while European equities ended Friday mostly lower.
The dollar declined against most major currencies.

Results of a new Pew Research
poll show that the majority of
Americans now oppose more
gun control. Polls conducted by
Gallup and CNN yielded similar
results. Over the past twenty
years, Americans’ opposition to
gun control has been growing.
Groups trying to push gun
control have spent hundreds of
millions of dollars in an effort to
promote their agenda. In 2013,
gun rights groups, including
the NRA, spent less than oneseventh as much on television
ads. Wealthy individuals such as
Michael Bloomberg and George
Soros have funded new gun
control campaigns for 2015.
Fox News reports:
Perceptions have changed
dramatically, with most people
now believing the “More Guns,
Less Crime” hypothesis. Gallup
recently asked Americans if
they thought residents are safer
with a gun in the home. People
answered “Yes” by a margin
of 63 to 30 percent. In 2000,
Americans gave just the opposite
answer by a margin of 51 to 35

Similarly, the annual number
of federal background checks
increased from 8.5 to 21 million.
According to Gallup, 42 percent
of Americans now have a gun in
the home.
The Pew Research Center
survey found that 57 percent
of Americans believe gun
ownership “protects people from
becoming victims of crime.”
Thirty-eight percent believe
that it “puts people’s safety at
risk.” Support for gun ownership
has grown particularly sharply
among blacks and women, with
their support since 2012 rising
by 25 and 11 percentage points
respectively.
It appears the American people
have spoken. Now it is time for
legislators to listen.

Eight Opportunities to Serve in New Year
Valdosta-Lowndes County residents who have made serving
their community a New Year’s resolution have until Wednesday,
Jan. 28, to apply for eight opportunities to serve on one of
the city’s boards, commissions, authorities, and advisory
committees (BCAAC).

15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was
an American pastor, activist,
humanitarian, and leader in the
African-American Civil Rights
Movement. He is best known
for his role in the advancement
of civil rights using nonviolent
civil disobedience based on his
Christian beliefs.
He was born Michael King,
but his father changed his
name in honor of the German
reformer Martin Luther. A Baptist
minister, King became a civil
rights activist early in his career.
He led the 1955 Montgomery
Bus Boycott and helped
found the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference (SCLC)
in 1957, serving as its first
president. With the SCLC,
King led an unsuccessful
struggle against segregation in
Albany, Georgia, in 1962, and
organized nonviolent protests
in Birmingham, Alabama, that
attracted national attention
following television news
coverage of the brutal police
response. King also helped to
organize the 1963 March on
Washington, where he delivered
his famous “I Have a Dream”
speech. There, he established
his reputation as one of the
greatest orators in American
history.
On October 14, 1964, King
received the Nobel Peace Prize
for combating racial inequality
through nonviolence. In 1965,
he and the SCLC helped

a national occupation of
Washington, D.C., to be called
the Poor People’s Campaign,
when he was assassinated on
April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee.
His death was followed by riots
in many U.S. cities. Allegations
that James Earl Ray, the
man convicted of killing King,
had been framed or acted in
concert with government agents
persisted for decades after the
shooting. The jury of a 1999
civil trial found Loyd Jowers to
be complicit in a conspiracy
against King. The ruling has
since been discredited and a
sister of Jowers admitted that
he had fabricated the story so
he could make $300,000 from
selling the story, and she in turn
corroborated his story in order
to get some money to pay her
income tax.[1][2]
King was posthumously
awarded the Presidential
Medal of Freedom and the
Congressional Gold Medal.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
was established as a holiday
in numerous cities and states
beginning in 1971, and as a
U.S. federal holiday in 1986.
Hundreds of streets in the
U.S. have been renamed in
his honor. In addition, a county
was rededicated in his honor. A
memorial statue on the National
Mall was opened to the public in
2011.

The second grade teacher
stood before her noisy
class, raised her voice and
shouted, “I want you to be
so quiet that you can hear a
pin drop!”
Silence suddenly
prevailed. When Danny
could no longer contain
himself, he shouted, “Let ‘er
drop!”
It’s not unusual to have
an attitude like that toward
God. We pray and wait.
Then pray again. Then wait
a little longer. Still, nothing
happens. It seems as
though we are waiting for
“the pin to drop.”
Psalm 28 begins with the
“silence of God.” In fact, He
is so silent that the Psalmist
becomes impatient and
shouts, “If you don’t answer
soon, I will be like those
going down to their grave abandoned!”
The subtle message from
David was that if God did
not answer his prayer his
enemies would rejoice.
“They,” he reminds God,
“care nothing for what the
Lord has done or what His
hands have made.” In other
words, “God, I don’t want
You to be embarrassed. I
don’t want people to ridicule
You. I’ve laid my life and
Your reputation on the
line and if You are silent,
if you let me down, they
will believe that You are
untrustworthy!”
David was not afraid to
present his case to God
and demand help. He did
not want “unbelievers” to
look at his situation and
say, “I told you so. Your
God is no more dependable
than ours. He’s not even
listening!”
Not so. David looked at
them and said, “Praise the
Lord! For He has heard
my cry for mercy.” David
prayed. God answered.
And everyone saw God “at
work.”

Herb-Roasted Chicken
With Potatoes and Peas
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds
new potatoes (about 15), halved or quartered if large
3 tablespoons olive oil
kosher salt and black pepper
8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (about 2 1/2 pounds total)
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 cup frozen peas, thawed
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, plus lemon wedges for
serving
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
Directions
1.1.Heat oven to 450° F with a rack in the highest position.
Toss the potatoes with the oil and ½ teaspoon each
salt and pepper on a rimmed baking sheet. Season
the chicken with the caraway seeds, mustard, and ¼
teaspoon each salt and pepper.
2..Nestle the chicken skin-side up in the potatoes and
roast, tossing the potatoes once, until the potatoes are
tender and an instant-read thermometer inserted in each
thigh registers 165º F, 25 to 30 minutes.
3.3.Add the peas to the chicken and potatoes and
continue to roast until warmed through, 2 to 3 minutes.
Drizzle with the lemon juice.
4.4.Sprinkle with the dill and serve with the lemon
wedges.
