Quitman(05-18-15),Brooks County Extension will be hosting a Georgia
Department of Ag- Egg Candling class on June 30, 2015 at the Ag Building in
Quitman. Class will start at 10am. Registration fee of $8 will cover lunch, class
materials will be provided. Class size is limited to 25 people and will be filled on a first
come- first serve basis. Call 263-4103 to register by June 26. **The Department of
Ag requires all those selling homegrown eggs to the public to have an Egg Candling
license. A license can be obtained by attending this class.
UGA Athletic Association giving $1 million for experiential learning
University of Georgia Athletic Association will establish a $1 million endowment to
support the university’s new experiential learning initiative. The association’s board of
directors approved the contribution during its spring meeting. “The athletic association
has a strong track record of supporting the university’s most important academic
initiatives,” said President Jere W. Morehead, who also serves as chair of the board,
“and none is more relevant to the institution right now than this initiative designed to
further enhance student learning at UGA.” (Georgia Trend)
Valdosta(May 29,2015)City Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
Wins TopOp Award Harold Henderson (left) was honored at the May 21 City Council
meeting by Mud Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent Keith Martin for
recently being selected as the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP)
TopOp for District 7, which represents over 300 wastewater plant operators in the
southwest and south-central Georgia region. Henderson, who has worked as an
operator at the Mud Creek Plant for over 12 years, was recognized for his outstanding
and innovative performance in the field of wastewater plant operations and for being
a positive example among his peers. The City of Valdosta applauds Henderson for
receiving this state recognition and for positively representing the City of Valdosta.
Gov.Deal: Courion to create more than 100 jobs in Fulton County
Leading information security solutions provider to locate international
headquarters in Roswell Gov. Nathan Deal today announced that Courion, a
market-leading identity and access management solutions provider, is relocating its
international headquarters to a new center for excellence in Roswell, creating more
than 100 jobs over the next two years.
Georgia is home to more than 115 information security companies, as well as the new
U.S Army Cyber Command headquarters in Augusta. In fact, more than 25 percent of
the worldwide security revenue market share is generated by companies located in
Georgia. Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) project manager,
Shirlynn Brownell, assisted Courion on behalf of Georgia in partnership with the Metro
Atlanta Chamber and Georgia Power.
Dahlonega voted a top Southern small town
After four weeks of voting, Dahlonega finished fourth in the Best Southern Small Town
poll on USA Today’s website. A panel of three Southern travel experts narrowed a list
of small towns down to 20 candidates. Each small town nominated for the award has a
population of fewer than 20,000. (Ga Trend)

71 Years Later
This year marked the 71st
Anniversary of D-Day (June
6th, 1944) , the largest
seaborne invasion to ever take
place. If you were 18 years old
on that day you would now be
89.
Our history of D-Day seems
to be told through the eyes
of Omaha Beach in order to
capture the horrific time our
men had coming ashore.
However, just around the
corner was Utah Beach, which
was also very challenging. You
could almost write that as much
went wrong as went right that
early morning at 6:30 AM when
the first 600 men of the 4th
Infantry Division landed.
It was all wrong! Of the four
boats that were to guide the
landing craft to their right
locations three had sunk or
were out of action and the last
one was not in a location to
affect the right beach landing.
So there our troops were,
looking at their maps and
nothing in front of them looked
familiar. The currents had
pushed them down the beach
into unfamiliar landscape. This
was not going to be an easy
day.

Brigadier General Teddy
Roosevelt, Jr., finally convinced
his Division Commander to
let him go ashore with the
first wave. The General was
no stranger to combat having
earned numerous valorous
decorations in WWI. He was
56 years old (the oldest man
on the beach at D-Day), he
had heart trouble, he had
arthritis, he led from the front.
He quickly sorted out the mess,
got the men going towards their
adjusted objectives and greeted
his Division Commander at
11:00 AM, when he came
ashore, with a completely
adjusted battle plan. Years later
General Omar Bradley was
asked to name the single most
heroic action he had ever seen
in combat, and he replied, “Ted
Roosevelt on Utah Beach.”
On July 12th General Roosevelt
died of a heart attack in
Normandy. The day he died he
had been recommended for
promotion to Major General,
command of the 90th Division,
and the Medal of Honor, which
was awarded posthumously.
Sometimes battles are literally
won based on the personal
courage of one man, and Teddy
was our man on that day, at
that place, at that time.

Coca-Cola Co. has rolled out at the World
Expo-Milan the planet’s first PET plastic
bottle made entirely from plant material.
The Atlanta-based beverage giant said the
new recyclable plastic bottle is made from
renewable plant materials. The plant bottle
technology converts natural sugars found
in plants into the ingredients to make PET
plastic bottles. (Ga Trend)
Georgians could face double-digit increases
in their health insurance premiums next year,
based on initial rates sought by insurers.
Insurers’ requests in Georgia range as
high as a 64.2 percent increase for a Time
Insurance Co. plan for individual coverage
starting in January. But most of the doubledigit increases being requested in the state
are in the range of 10 percent to 20 percent.
