Black history Month
With an Oscar nomination and BAFTA award for 12
Years a Slave, certainly 2014 seems to be a tremendous
year for the British born Nigerian actor, not only
has he been tipped as ‘one of the greatest actors of
his generation’ but to add to his success, he is now
rumoured to star opposite Daniel Craig as 007’s nemesis
in the next James Bond flick! There seems to be no limit
to this actor’s achievements, Helene Kleih, takes a look
at the soaring career of the esteemed actor that we all
know as, Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Chiwetel Ejiofor
The man himself
Written By Helene Kleih
AFTER BEING DISCOVERED BY SPIELBERG AT THE TENDER AGE OF 19, IT IS HARD TO
IMAGINE THAT ACTING WAS NEVER THE DIRECT VOCATIONAL PATH FOR THE LONDON
BORN NIGERIAN ACTOR, CHIWETEL EJIOFOR. DESPITE ACCUMULATING NUMEROUS
AWARDS AND ACCLAMATIONS, CHIWETEL REMAINS ADAMANT THAT ACTING WAS NOT
A CONSCIOUS PRIORITY IN HIS LIFE, SIMPLY SOMETHING THAT HE FELL INTO. NEEDLESS
TO SAY, THAT ‘SOMETHING’ IS THE EPITOME OF EXTRAORDINARY TALENT, AS WITHIN
A CAREER SPANNING 18 YEARS HE HAS AMASSED A REPERTOIRE OF MORE THAN 25
FEATURE FILMS, 2 NOTABLE BRITISH DRAMA SERIES, AND HAS HAD HIS FAIR SHARE OF
WEST END STAGE APPEARANCES. IN LIGHT OF CHIWETEL’S RECENT FAME SURROUNDING
12 YEARS A SLAVE, CRITICS AND THE PUBLIC ALIKE HAVE BEEN TOO HASTY IN THEIR
TYPECASTING OF HIM AS ‘THE ONE TO WATCH.’ FAR FROM THIS, EJIOFOR HAS ALREADY
SINGLE-HANDEDLY CREATED A NAME FOR HIMSELF.
# 2G E TH E RM AG AZ IN E
Breaking the traditional mould of Nigerian familial expectations
(his mother was a pharmacist whilst his father was a doctor),
Ejiofor began acting in school plays at only thirteen years old
at South London public school, Dulwich College. He then went
on to join the National Youth Theatre in 1995. A testament
to his raw natural talent came soon after, as despite gaining a
scholarship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art
he chose like anyone would if Steven Spielberg asked, to play the
part of James Covey in Amistad (1997).
His varying previous roles include his portrayal of Okwe in
Dirty Pretty Things (2002), The Operative in Serenity (2005),
Lola in Kinky Boots (2005), Luke in Children of Men (2006), Dr.
Adrian Helmsley in 2012 (2009) and Ian Carter in Tsunami: The
Aftermath (2008), all of which led to him receiving acclaim
through either being nominated or winning awards such as the
Golden Globe Award, British Independent Film Award and BAFTA
Orange Rising Star Award. Not forgetting his astounding lead
performances on stage in Shakespeare’s classics, as Romeo in
2000 and then as the renowned Othello in 1995, 1996 and 2007.
NOTABLE FACT: Chiwetel’s father, Dr Arinze Ejiofor, was also a highlife singer, whose promising career was cut short
after he tragically died in a car crash during a family trip to Nigeria. Chiwetel, who was just age 11 at the time was also
present in the vehicle. He was the only survivor and still has visible permanent scarring on his forehead.
12 YEARS A SLAVE
Chiwetel’s recent emotive, sincere portrayal of Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave (2013) has
captured the hearts of a worldwide audience, leaving critics singing his praises and resulting in an
Academy Award and Oscar nomination. The biographical film centres on Northup’s 1968 memoir,
which records his brutal struggle as a kidnapped free black man turned slave. The merciless acts of
violence endured by the slaves are horrific to watch, yet is an aspect that was all too common in
Northup’s daily life. As Chiwetel adopts his new identity as Platt, a man void of freedom of any sort,
there is a sense of hopelessness that inhabits his eyes. As Platt states, ‘I don’t want to survive. I want
to live’, the plight of the slaves inner entrapment is shown. The harrowing physicality of violence is
not what touches the heart. It is what the violence represents; a manifestation of the complete lack
of control that the slaves’ have over their own bodies. Chiwetel’s large-eyed innocence seems perfect
for illustrating both the injustice and confusion that Northup and his fellow slaves bore at their
unspeakable mistreatment. Chiwetel fit the part of Northup perfectly, as director Steve McQueen
stated himself: "Chiwetel Ejiofor was always going to be Solomon Northup for me. I was looking for
someone that had that genteelness, that kind of humanity.’’
In terms of its British audience, 12 Years a Slave incites a long-awaited debate regarding Britain’s
position in slavery and the notion of race. The mere fact that both the director and lead actor are
of Black-British descent serves to remind us that slavery is not only an American preoccupation.
Furthermore, there is a sense of irony in a film of such oppression being realised by two celebrated
black men with an OBE and a CBE.
NOTABLE FACT: Despite the recent spotlight on Chiwetel, the talented actor was already highly recognised for his for works in the acting
field. In 2008 Chiwetel was appointed Officer of the British Empire (O.B.E) in the Queen’s birthday honours list on behalf of his service to
drama. Before 12 Years a Slave Chiwetel already had three Golden Globe nominations and has since amassed two more.

From L-R: Chiwetel Ejiofor after winning
a BAFTA award for Best Actor, 12 Years a
Slave - Lupita Nyong'o, Chiwetel Ejiofor,
Steve McQueen, Sarah Paulson, and Michael
Fassbender with the award for Best Motion
Picture at the 71st annual Golden Globe
Awards - Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie
Newton in Biyi Bandele's Nigeria-set film
Half of a Yellow Sun.
For Ejiofor it is evident that 12 Years a Slave affects him not only
in terms of race and the depiction of the historical relationship
between white and black, but also more intimately through his own
Nigerian heritage. As he asserts, ‘There’s the personal, emotional
journey of being a black man and talking about this story, talking
about slavery. Also, there’s being a Nigerian: my heritage being
Nigerian, and having that knowledge right from when I was first
conscious.’
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHIWETEL?
In the coming year, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s face will certainly not be
missed from the big screen as he stars in Nigerian film drama,
Half of a Yellow Sun (2013) alongside fellow Brit, Thandie Newton.
Directed by Biyi Bandele and based on the novel by Chimamanda
Ngozi Adichie, the well-received film was released in the UK and
Nigeria during April 2014
Half of a Yellow Sun tells the story of two Nigerian twins who were
educated in England, and the dramatic change their lives faced in
the late 1960 conflict of the Nigerian-Biafran war.
The struggle of the Igbo people in their quest of establishing Biafra
as an independent republic is something that resonates profoundly
with Chiwetel: ‘It was a deeply personal experience. Because not
only are my parents Nigerian, but also Igbo and from the exact
region then that all the events of the film take place… So the events
[civil war-related] in the film happened to my own family. This part
of our history is very defining.’
After having just completed writing and directing his second film
Columbite Tantalite (2013), a short fusion of Congo’s longstanding
and more recent struggles, Chiwetel is set to direct The Boy Who
Harnessed the Wind, a magnificent autobiographical story by
William Kamkwamba, who as a boy built a windmill from scrap as
the famine in Malawi unfolded around him.
Through his affiliations as an actor and director, it is clear that
Chiwetel Ejiofor is a man inspired by a human perseverance that
transcends the boundaries of race, age and gender. His strong social
and political stance enforces his notion that film and media are
great tools in educating a wider audience, whether that is on the
African struggles in Congo, Nigeria and Malawi or those on a more
global scale.
The fascination with the humble Chiwetel will most definitely
continue, as Britain’s ‘first black film star’ carries on doing both
Britain and Nigeria proud.
NOTABLE FACT: According to Steve McQueen, Director of 12
Years a Slave, Chiwetel originally passed on the opportunity to
play the lead part of Solomon Northup. Reportedly the British
actor just needed more time to contemplate taking on the
intense and powerful role.

Along with masses of free fun for families that

BIGCHURCHDAYOUT
2014!!
IF YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE THE PERFECT DAY OUT TO THE
ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE, WALKING THROUGH THE GROUNDS
OF A FINE 16TH CENTURY ENGLISH MANSION, WORSHIPPING
TO THE SOUNDS OF THE GREATEST COLLECTION OF CHRISTIAN
ARTISTS AND WORSHIP LEADERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
WITH MORE THAN 20,000 OTHER BROTHERS AND SISTERS
FROM THIS CRAZY THING WE CALL CHURCH, PLUS A BIG SLICE
OF HEAVEN THROWN INTO THE MIX, THEN YOU’D BE GETTING
CLOSE TO IMAGINING WHAT THE BIG CHURCH DAY OUT IS ALL
ABOUT!
For the last 5 years this event has rapidly grown to one of the
country’s largest annual gatherings of the church, when young and
old, white and black, all come together to celebrate the One person
that unites us all, One who is far greater than anything that would
divide us.
One of the great things about the event, according to it’s organiser
Tim Jupp who was formerly in the band Delirious, is that ‘rarely
these days can we find amazing events in the Christian calendar
that at their heart have family. We spend a lot of time putting on
conferences, concerts, and all night worship events, but one of the
unique things about the Big Church Day Out is that you can bring
your whole family, enjoy the countryside, and still leave knowing
you have not only met with 20,000 other believers, but with the
God that created us all too.” Tim goes on to say that “One of the
most exciting things we’ve seen happen as the Big Church Day
Out has continued to grow each year, is that so many people are
bringing friends and family who don’t yet know Jesus, and in this
environment of fun and family, are finding a relationship with God
who is often encountered through the hours of passionate and
heartfelt worship that remains the central focus of the event.”
This year will see an extraordinary lineup of artists,
including the amazing Fred Hammond, along with
over 30 other worship leaders and artists that
promise to deliver an incredible two days.
If you’ve ever wondered how best to spend your
bank holiday weekend, then this could be the perfect
answer that you’ve been looking for!!

ARIK AIR CELEBRATES 7 YEARS!
#2 GE TH E RM AG AZ IN E
SINCE INCEPTION ARIK AIR HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE; NOT JUST IN THE AIRLINE, BUT
THE NIGERIAN AVIATION INDUSTRY. SINCE LAUNCHING
OPERATIONS IN 2006 ARIK AIR HAS EXPERIENCED
CONSISTENT GROWTH, MAKING THE AIRLINE THE POSTER
BOY OF NIGERIAN COMMERCIAL AVIATION. THE GROWTH
OF ARIK AIR IS SET TO CONTINUE, AND AS AN AMBITIOUS
COMPANY, THERE IS A LOT MORE IT CAN STRIVE TO
ACHIEVE IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
This year, not only does Arik Air have plans to increase its market
share in Nigeria, but with the recent addition of three new aircraft
to the fleet; Arik Air is looking to further its expansion by launching
international routes to Abidjan and Dubai.
The key ethos driving Arik Air, is its commitment to security. As a
result it has won the Security Watch Africa award three times. Other
notable awards include, the award for the Best Security Conscious
Airline in Nigeria and the Best Security and Safety Conscious Airline
in West Africa. The International Institute of Professional Security
also saw fit to award Arik Air for excellence in recognition of its
security consciousness.
Another defining characteristic behind the airlines’ success has
been its willingness to embrace and understand how technology
can be utilised to improve the customer experience. For example,
mobile penetration far exceeds the reach of the internet in Nigeria
and West Africa. Therefore, additions to Arik Airs’ customer offering
such as the mobile and table app, help position Arik as a 21st
Century operator, utilising cutting edge technology to improve the
ease of service and customer satisfaction. Arik Air also constantly
reviews its fleet to ensure the services it offer to customers remain
competitive and provide the highest quality. The introduction
of new aircraft further highlights its commitment to providing
customers with the very best product on offer.

Arik Air believe in offering a truly unique African experience, from

mix of Electro Pop RnB, Soul, Funk, Gospel Harmonies and Nigerian
Rhythms
The first single “Lean on My Shoulder” is a soul epic with deep lyrical
content and a message of hope. Lead singer, Deji adopts a restrained and
almost vulnerable delivery to draw out the emotion. Written over several
months and inspired by real personal events, the song holds a message of
hope for anyone that may be feeling overwhelmed by the dramas of life.
The music video filmed in London by Andrew Webber and Vidal Legend
showcases high production value and gives a glimpse of what is to come
from “Deeper” in 2014.

ON MARCH 2ND 2014 MILLIONS OF REDEEMED CHRISTIAN
CHURCH OF GOD (RCCG) MEMBERS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE
CELEBRATED THE 72ND BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH’S GENERAL

AS DADDY G.O).
At the national headquarters of the church in Ebute Metta, Lagos,
the Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration and
Personnel, Pastor Johnson Odesola led thousands of parishioners to
pray for the good health of the mentor, teacher, leader, and father
to millions of Christians across the world.
On March 3rd March third annual Marathon Messiah’s Praise

RCCG GENERAL OVERSEER ADEBOYE, ONE OF THE FIFTY MOST
POWERFUL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD
Pastor E. A. Adeboye was Born in 1942 into a humble family in the
# 2G ETHERMAGAZINE
Written by Jessica Onah
village of Ifewara, Osun State located in the South-western part of
Nigeria. Pastor Adeboye often humorously states that his family
was so poor that even the poor people called them poor. In fact, he
unashamedly tells his congregation that he never owned shoes until
he was eighteen years of age but what he possessed though were
physical intangibles such as focus, consistency, diligence, ambition, a
brilliant mind and a determination to succeed in life.
In 1981 when Pastor Adeboye was appointed General Overseer of
the church, taking over from Papa Josiah Akindayomi, who had died
the previous year, one could only imagine what the future would
hold. For three years he filled the role part-time, still lecturing at
Ilorin, until giving up his university position to preach full time and
lead what would be one of the fastest growing churches on the
globe.
In 1956 Pastor Adeboye was enrolled into Ilesha Grammar School,
Ilesha, Osun State, Western Nigeria and as a youth he discovered
a passion for books, and an aptitude for science and in particular
the field of Mathematics. This led to an academic journey in the
field of Mathematics and by the time he was done, Pastor Adeboye
had obtained a Bachelors (BSc.) degree in Mathematics from the
University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria in 1967, a Masters (MSc.)
Degree in Hydrodynamics and a Doctorate Degree (PhD) in Applied
Mathematics, both from the University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria in
1969 and 1975 respectively.
Pastor Adeboye has since built a mission of a staggering twenty
thousand churches all over the world (Nigeria, almost all the
nations in Africa, the US, the UK, Canada, South America, the
Caribbean, Europe, Australia, India, China, Hong Kong, the Far East
and even the Middle East).
Pastor Adeboye worked as a lecturer in mathematics at the
universities of Lagos and Ilorin. After joining the RCCG, he began
working to translate the sermons of its then Pastor and founder,
Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, from Yoruba into English.
As Pastor Adeboye became an active member of RCCG, the founder
Papa Josiah Akindayomi began to personally mentor and groom
him for the future assignment he was totally unaware of. In 1977
when he was ordained a Pastor in RCCG, Enoch Adeboye manifested
an incredible passion for the work of the Lord, pioneering bible
study meetings, crusades, revivals, outreaches and the evangelistic
programs known as the Congress. Three decades later it is
astonishing to note the mass reach of RCCG on an international
scale.
Last year, Pastor Adeboye unveiled plans by the church to construct
one of the biggest auditorium in the world, saying that the new
auditorium would be three kilometres square. The auditorium is
expected to be completed before the church’s 2014 convention in
August.
To date, all over the world Pastor Adeboye has been conferred with
several honorary degrees and national merit awards in appreciation
of his contributions to humanity. In the 2009 Newsweek Elite
Edition he was listed as one of the Fifty Most Influential People in
the World.
Pastor Adeboye is married to his beloved wife Pastor Foluke Adenike
Adeboye with whom he has children.
Pastor Adeboye’s trade mark of humility is disarming and this
endears him to people, enabling him to easily share his testimony
of the Gospel. His passion for soul-winning feeds his passion for
church-planting and through this, countless thousands have been
inspired to follow him and likewise serve the Lord in the ministry.

Lifestyle and well-being
32:27 talked about God and how nothing is impossible for him to do, indeed there is absolutely
nothing impossible for him to do!
In that story, there was a widow that had nothing but flour and oil, unfortunately, she was too
blind to see how what she had could have been a source of food. She was so wrapped up by the
situation of the economy and everything around her that she was ready to feed herself and her
son with dried sticks! God told Elijah in verse 9b “I have commanded a widow there to provide
for you.” The widow was a provider and did not even know it! She had been commanded
by God, the one who created the heavens and the earth yet she was living below what was
expected of her! How many of us are in this category?
We still think we have to wait for the guest – Opportunity, to knock on our doors? The widow
could have survived successfully in that famine land and stood out, if only she had confidence
in who she was in Christ! The awesome thing is that Elijah, the Opportunity, finally came
knocking at her door and what did the widow do? She counted every reason why she had to
die, she probably narrated a sad story about how her husband died and left her with a child to
feed, she just by a mere chance remembered that she had flour and oil, no matter how small it
was! Now, whether the Opportunity came or not, she would have always had the flour and oil,
even after she had fed herself and her son with sticks and died.
PREPARE FOR THE GUEST - OPPORTUNITY
#2GETHERMAGAZINE
ARE Y O U REA D Y?
Written by Hadassah Ajayi
THERE IS A POPULAR SAYING THAT SUCCESS HAPPENS WHEN
CHANCE MEETS OPPORTUNITY. INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKERS HAVE
COME UP WITH NUMEROUS WAYS TO SUCCEED AND THEIR
PROTÉGÉS HAVE CARRIED THE MESSAGE AND LIKE THE GOSPEL,
THEY HAVE SPREAD THE WORD TO THE LENGTH AND BREADTH
OF ANYTHING AND ANYONE THAT IS WILLING TO LISTEN.
SUCCESS SEEMS TO BE THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND EVERY
HUMAN ACTION; UNFORTUNATELY SUCCESS MAY BE SO NEAR,
YET SO FAR ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU PUT IN EFFORT AND TIME.
YOU MAY ASK YOURSELF... WHEN WILL THE OPPORTUNITY COME?
HOW LONG WOULD I WAIT FOR ‘CHANCE’ TO ARRANGE A DATE
WITH ‘OPPORTUNITY’?
You might be reading this and think to yourself – Yes! I have worked
hard, I think I am prepared, I think I know what I want and where
I’m going, but when will my opportunity come? I have been waiting
and doing all the right things, reading the right books, speaking all
the right words and attended the right seminars, but nothing seems
to work! Like you, I too had done all I could and it seemed that I
always fell short of where I knew I could be, should be and want to
be. It was almost like every time I took a step forward and threw
in all my efforts, our favourite friend, Opportunity, seemed to be
late for our date! I began to wonder, did the book of Ecclesiastes
9:11b not say; “for time and chance happens to them all?” So am I
just meant to sit down and wait for time, wait for the opportunity...
wait?! Is that really what the word is asking me to do? Even if I
throw in all my efforts and break my back in the process, I can
only hope and wait? Where does hard work + preparation = merit?
Everything that I knew about how ‘Life’ should work suddenly
became a myth.
Maybe like myself, you sought advice and had some wise people say
“it could be something from your father’s house or your mother’s
house?” “Are you sure they have not dedicated your success to
some sort of god and shouldn’t you be doing something about it?”
You seek Prophets to tell you your fate and prophesy into your
destiny, and this is all good, all ‘Christianese’ actions you must take
to get that success you have worked so hard for! Yes, do all you
possibly can, after all you are meant to be taking actions while
you wait for your guest – Opportunity, to arrive, or should you?
Then it dawns on you that you have done all you possibly can do
and forgot to do one thing or maybe you did – Maybe you did
try to understand your relationship with Him, listen to Him and
understand His timing for You! After all of this is done, ARE YOU
READY to be where He needs you to be?
We get so wrapped up in what everyone else is doing, what society
and the economy is saying, what the majority are saying and how
everyone thinks your life should pan out. You find yourself lost in
this mix and although you try to be brave, confusion is not too far.
People are so quick to try to figure you
out and give advice on the best approach
to take. Inspirational leaders give you
‘7 sure ways’ to attain success. Your
mentors give you sound advice from
experience and like a diligent mentee,
you run away with it and forget to find
out who you are, where He intends for
you to be and what He has placed in you
in order to draw our guest – Opportunity.
What Opportunity brought along with him was an increase of what she had! Opportunity
took what she had and brought overflowing abundance of not just food, but health, life and
sustenance in the midst of nothing! We wait and wait before we make a move and some
of us make moves in the wrong territory and wrong calling. Think about it, have you been
commanded to do what you are breaking your back to do? Do you know who you are in Christ
and where He has created you to be? We cry that we want a breakthrough but are we mentally
prepared for its arrival? Do we have room enough for when that Opportunity comes knocking
or are we going to give excuses at the door?
When the widow’s son became ill and finally stopped breathing it was Elijah prayed on her
behalf he the boy to be revived. Before Elijah took part in this miracle the widow’s mind was
still not transformed so she didn’t see what Opportunity carried. She never thought that
Opportunity could revive her son. God was merciful to her and He is to you too, but sometimes
our Opportunities may be handicapped by our lack of vision and understanding.
Today, take a minute to think and reflect, take into account the example of Elijah and the
widow, what are your fears, limitations, strengths or gifts? Consider your options, make less
excuses and rest assured on Gods promises.
Just as the widow was unaware that she was part of God’s plan even during the famine, when
Opportunity came knocking, how far it could take her and how many doors it could open, I say
to you, that even as you ask for God’s overflow, don’t forget that you may need just one guest
– Opportunity, to open several doors as long as you are positioned in the right place and at
God’s perfect timing. So I ask; Are you really ready?
ELIJAH AND THE WIDOW – 1 KINGS 17:
1 -24
Like the story of the widow in the Book
of 1Kings 17: 1 – 24, Elijah cursed the
land and asked God to withhold water
from the land for a number of years. This
meant dryness and as we know, it is very
difficult to survive without water! Live
stock died, plants withered and there
was famine across the land. In all of this,
Elijah was fed by ravens until the brook
dried up. Now, what if the brook kept
flowing and the ravens continued feeding
Elijah until the famine came to an end?
When Genesis 18: 14 and Jeremiah

Written by Adeola Idowu and Michael Ayo

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST ALBUM HEARTBEAT…
Heartbeat is random. It’s literally based on the different experiences
I’ve had and some of my thoughts, basically the things that are
beating on my heart this past year. The songs range from a song
called ‘Gray’, where I talk about the world appearing to be in HD
and as Christians we seem to be in black white. The world continues
to treat us like our views as Christians are outdated. If we listen to
these views enough we could begin to think that of ourselves. This
track talks about seeing things through God’s lenses and feeling
what he feels. ‘Come Home’ is another song on the record that is
just an invitation to the lost, the prodigal. There is a wide range of
songs but they all makes sense and relate to the ‘Heartbeat’ theme
and the need for our hearts to be in line with his.
About Da'T.R.U.T.H.
Philadelphia’s Emanuel Lee Lambert, Jr. also known as
Da' T.R.U.T.H. is the forerunning artist in the realm of
Christian Rap. Da'T.R.U.T.H has been noted as an urban
missionary in music, with an enthralling desire to impact a
generation with the truth.
THERE ARE QUITE A NUMBER OF FEATURING ARTISTS ON THIS
ALBUM, TELL US MORE…
Yes, features I’ve got everybody on this record. There’s a lot of
diversity, I’ve got Christian contemporary artists such as Chris
August. Gospel artists such as James Fortune, Isaac Carree and
Alexis Spight. I’ve also got Lacrae, Canon and even Papa San. I also
have a few artists from my new label. It is truly a ‘Mixed Bag’ album.
[laughs]
HEARTBEAT - The 7th studio album offering a collection of of thoughts and
experiences. The 16 track banger is available now on iTunes
DA’ T.R.U.T.H IS CERTAINLY NO STRANGER IN THE WORLD OF
CHRISTIAN MUSIC, PARTICULARLY AS HE IS ONE OF THE MOST
POPULAR ARTISTS IN GOSPEL RAP. ARGUABLY DA’ T.R.U.T.H IS A
FORERUNNER IN HIS GENRE AND A PROLIFIC ARTIST BOASTING A
TOTAL OF SEVEN STUDIO ALBUMS AND NUMEROUS ACCOLADES
INCLUDING THREE STELLAR AWARDS. WHAT'S PARTICULARLY
SPECIAL ABOUT DA’ T.R.U.T.H IS HIS ABILITY TO BLEND DIFFERENT
STYLES OF MUSIC, MOVING FROM HARD CORE HIP HOP SOUNDS
TO INFLUENCES OF CHRISTIAN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC.
NATURALLY AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE IN THE GAME DA’
T.R.U.TH HAS NOW LAUNCHED HIS OWN MUSIC LABEL, MIXED
BAG ENTERTAINMENT. 2014 HAS ALSO BROUGHT ON THE
RELEASE OF HIS LATEST WORK HEARTBEAT, HIS SEVENTH ALBUM.
IN THIS INTERVIEW DA’ T.R.U.T.H SHEDS LIGHT ON HIS HEART
FOR GOD AND HOW THIS HAS LED HIM TO TRULY COME TO AN
UNDERSTANDING OF HIS IDENTITY AS A GOSPEL RAP ICON.
“In life you are the same
person but your experiences
are different, your observations
are different and your
perspective on things can
change.”
SO YOU HAVE NOW RELEASED A BRAND NEW ALBUM
HEARTBEAT, YOUR SEVENTH STUDIO RECORD! LET ME GET THIS
RIGHT TO DATE YOU HAVE RELEASED; MOMENT OF TRUTH, THE
FAITH, OPEN BOOK, THE BIG PICTURE, THE WHOLE TRUTH, THEN
LOVE, HOPE WAR AND NOW HEARTBEAT…
Yes! There we go!
#2 GE T HE R MA GA ZI NE
JUDGING FROM THE TITLES SINCE YOUR FIRST ALBUM WHAT
WOULD YOU SAY IS THE CONSISTENT THEME AMONGST YOUR
ALBUMS?
I reflect changes every time. In life you are the same person but
your experiences are different, your observations are different and
your perspective on things can change. So every album reflects the
differences. Right from the Moment of Truth I create albums based
on the current space I’m in. With my first album I was constantly
emphasising the need for a saviour. It was more evangelistic, I was
thinking about the world. During The Faith I was focused on the
Church. I think if there is one consistent theme from that record
and onwards it would be my heart for the Church.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW LABEL, TELL US ABOUT THIS…
Mixed Bag Entertainment really started from an internal struggle
that I wrestled with about three years ago. I did an evaluation of
all of my contemporaries, looked at their brands and what was
consistent about them. I wasn’t discouraged but I noticed different
things. I did sort of self-inventory and asked myself what is my
brand? Who am I? I started thinking about my work and went
through this whole identity crisis, because I go from singing on a
record with a live band, to backpack hip hop, to gospel, to whatever
I feel. I realised I don’t do just one thing. I had a long talk with a
friend who pointed out that the fact I don’t do any one thing is
actually a greater strength and that was the moment of clarity for
me. I became comfortable in my own skin. That’s why when you see
me in concert I’m screaming and dancing, that’s who I am. I’ve fully
embraced that I’m not just one thing. That was me and I embraced
it. I realised that there are also a lot of other artists that do more
than one thing. But it seems the industry has no place for them, so
I felt like I had to take it upon myself to provide a platform and a
home for the musically diverse artist and that’s how we came up
with Mixed Bag.
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HAVING YOUR OWN LABEL WILL GIVE YOU
MORE FREEDOM?
Right now the industry is very limited and it’s very much polarised.
In the industry we have a far right and a far left. We have the gospel
music household names such as Kirk Franklin, Cece Winans, Donnie
McClurkin and Christian contemporary artists such as Chris Tomlin,
Matt Redman and Casting Crowns. Somewhere in the peripheral you
have hip hop. I feel like like the mission is to fill up this gap, so yes
there’s a freedom there. The goal of my label is for artists to come
in and be as creative as they want.
YOU ARE A MAN OF INFLUENCE AND A ROLE MODEL TO MANY,
WHAT CHARACTER OR PERSON IN THE BIBLE WOULD SAY IS
YOUR ROLE MODEL OR HAS INFLUENCED YOU? YOU CANNOT
SAY JESUS!
[Laughs] I’d have to say from a ministry perspective it’s got to be
Paul, I’ve always taken all of my cues from him and then from an
intimate perspective it has to be David.

#2GETHE RM AG A Z IN E
They won’t have hip hop because
they feel like that doesn’t fit. I’m out to
show people that what I and artists
like myself do is also worship.
WHICH OF THE TWO CAN YOU RELATE TO THE MOST?
David, because he was emotional and I’m an emotional dude. David was also a
warrior and a fighter, he was passionate but there was also a lot of heart. That’s
something I have personally moved towards over the past four years especially. I
think especially with the dynamic of my faith being very sensationalised.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT PEOPLE’S VIEWS ABOUT GOSPEL RAP? DO
YOU THINK PEOPLE TAKE TO IT OR WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE INDIFFERENT?
A lot of people forget to mention, The Cross Movement, that group set this whole
movement in motion. They took all the lashes for us so that we could do what we’re
doing now. They endured so much opposition and persecution. They were the first
guys to prove to the mainstream that they were a force to be reckoned with as
lyricists. People do not give them enough credit. So I start with them because the
journey to a large degree has been smooth because they knocked down so many
doors. There are still some that oppose gospel rap and it’s really because they don’t
understand it.
DO YOU THINK THERE ARE MANY MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE IMPACT
OF GOSPEL RAP, SOME SAY GOSPEL WORSHIP IS MORE IMPACTFUL ON THE
CONGREGATION AND PEOPLE’S HEARTS AS OPPOSED TO RAP?
There’s this idea that even though it’s impactful in some way it’s not impactful in
the same way. So even though someone might get saved off of that that, it can’t
stand up in a Chris Tomlin concert and it can’t stand up next to a Chris Tomlin in
terms of impact. Christian hip hop can’t have that same kind of power as worship
with Chris Tomlin or VaShawn Mitchell. I am out to diffuse that, I consider myself
a hip hop worship leader. I’ve spoken event organisers who hold one of the biggest
conferences in the world and they have all the mainstream gospel acts there like Tye
Tribbett, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond and all the crème de la crème but they won’t
have hip hop because they feel like that doesn’t fit. I’m out to show people that
what I and artists like myself do is also worship.
in his living room, just talking to him one on one.
That’s actually an amazing trait that we can learn
from. It’s right from an artistic perspective. I think
we have to be careful to not overdose on trying to
draw inspiration from them. When I get those records
I listen once, one time and then it’s over, because if
that becomes my daily intake I’m going to naturally
sound like that
DO YOU THINK IT’S WRONG FOR CHRISTIAN RAPPERS TO BE INFLUENCED BY
MAINSTREAM HIP HOP AND THE CULTURE? FOR EXAMPLE DO YOU THINK IT’S
RIGHT OR WRONG TO BE INSPIRED BY AN ARTIST LIKE DRAKE?
Negative. However I would collaborate with an artist
who makes music that is not sinful because there’s a
difference between secular and sinful.
I don’t think it’s wrong, I think it’s to what extent. There’s something that Drake
does that’s amazing. Drake is a conversational rapper, in other words he’s the kind
of guy that’s very vulnerable in his music and you always feel like you’re sitting
WOULD YOU EVER COLLABORATE WITH A SECULAR

not in the know; ‘Out & About with Lola’ is
a vibrant African entertainment show filled
with celeb interviews and juicy news, aired
every Tuesday at 9pm only on OH TV!
With all that sightseeing you do need some good food to
give you energy, if you are looking for countless eateries
(most being 24 hours) then the states is definitely the place
to be! One food joint that I would advise you to try is ‘The
Cheesecake Factory’ a restaurant primarily known for their
amazing cheesecakes. I would definitely recommend trying
out their ‘Chicken and Biscuits’ (chicken casserole with
vegetables, topped with flaky, golden biscuits) might sound
odd but it’s divine! The portions are humongous so if you
are like me you will need to save some for later. I suggest
you wash it all down with their strawberry lemonade; which
has to be one of the best thirst quenchers I have ever had!
Can’t tell you too much about what happened, you have to
watch to get the full lowdown on my trip!
SPEAKING OF GIST, IF YOU CAUGHT SEASON ONE OF ‘OUT AND ABOUT WITH LOLA’ YOU
WOULD HAVE COME ACROSS THE EVER POPULAR SECTION OF THE SHOW CALLED ‘GIST
ME’! I LOVE THIS SECTION OF THE SHOW, IT’S WHERE MY DEAR FRIEND ADEOLA IDOWU
(ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST AND EDITOR IN CHIEF OF THIS MAGAZINE!) AND I KEEP ALL
OF YOU UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST CELEBRITY NEWS! I JUST LOVE IT! SO MAKE SURE
YOU WATCH OUT FOR THIS NEXT SEASON! I KNOW YOU ALL LOVE A BIT OF GIST...
D’BANJ
Now, I’ve had some
memorable interviews
over the years but I can
definitely say one of the
most interesting I’ve had
to date had to be with
kokomaster ‘D’banj’. I
couldn’t stop laughing! He
has energy for days and
his banter is on another
level! We went from
talking about his latest
single and reality show to
pretending we were in a
Nollywood movie!
DAVIDO
Also, ‘Omo Baba lowo’
Davido stopped by for a
chat! The ‘Aye’ star came in
to talk about his hit track
‘Skelewu’ being officially
released on the UK charts, his
opinion on money and the
other projects in the pipeline.
Check his interesting
interview too on this season
of ‘Out & About with Lola’.
GIST ME CONTINUED -
About Lola Ogunbadejo
KOKO GARRI!
Singer and entertainer D’banj has certainly brought something new to the table and
I am not talking about his latest single. The ‘kokomaster’ recently released his first
product ‘Koko Garri’ from his company ‘Koko Holdings’! The ‘Oliver twist’ sensation
who was made an Ambassador for the Nagroprenuers Initiative in Abuja earlier this
year by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwunmi Adesina,
informed us of his latest business venture via Instagram. D’banj hopes ‘Koko Garri’ will
encourage young people to get into agriculture. Check out D’banj’s instagram post.
DENCIA Vs LUPITA
A lot of people had something to say about this, mostly condemning it, but popular
Nollywood producer and director Charles Novia stated “D’banj is selling a brand and
spreading a message. He is asking your young people to think out of the box. To see the
Koko Garri initiative as a laughable project means those narrow-minded people are as
dense as the Kukuruku Forests in the Savannah. Forget about the guy promoting the
message for a bit and focus on the message. It is time to embrace farming.”
Early on this year the Dencia took to twitter to blast dark skinned
Kenyan beauty and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o for reading a
letter from a fan which stated that she considered using Dencia’s
product but after seeing Lupita she changed her mind. Lupita has
discussed openly how her skin hasn’t always been considered
beautiful. When Dencia was questioned about Lupita, she replied
‘her story is her story…that’s her personal life….I don’t care about
it…. She’s lying about the letter.’ Dencia, whose product sold out in
24 hours’ has since been involved in several debates and subject to
verbal and social media attacks. Despite this, Dencia still insists that
her product is going to go very far and the majority of her clients
are African American.
Well done D’banj! I’m expecting to see ‘Koko Pounded Yam’ next!
What do you think about this? Tweet me to let me know!

UPRISE
Uprise music tv celebrates five fantastic
years of raising the profile of urban uk
gospel music
UPRISE is the Underground Gospel and
Inspirational Music strand of OH TV (Sky
Channel 199). UPRISE showcases the
very best of urban gospel Hip-Hop, RnB,
Soul, Garage/Grime and Reggae through
credible and authentic programming
that gives voice to Christian creatives
and musicians, reflecting their world,
expanding their horizons and providing
viewers with a positive alternative
to current negative urban music and
culture. UPRISE delivers international and
localised groundbreaking entertainment
found nowhere else!
The Passion of UPRISE is simple! To Uplift
and Inspire viewers through the various
genres of Gospel and Alternative music,
raising the profile of a music platform
that for too long has been quarantined
underground.
Its time for the Underground movement
that is Urban Gospel Music to UPRISE.
ON THE SUNDAY 16TH MARCH HUNDREDS OF FANS AND
SUPPORTERS FROM ALL OVER THE UK DESCENDED UPON
229 THE VENUE IN LONDON’S WEST END TO CELEBRATE
THE 5TH BIRTHDAY OF UPRISE MUSIC TV, THE URBAN
GOSPEL AND INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC STRAND OF OH TV
(SKY CHANNEL 199).
Hosted by Simply Andy accompanied with music from DJ Danny
Yega, the UPRISE 5th Birthday proved to be an unforgettable night
featuring an array of exclusive performances from notable names
in UK Gospel and a host of international acts also. The atmosphere
was a fine blend of nostalgic; with effortless performances of
memorable UK gospel classics such as the ‘Athem (C.O Double M.I)’
from rap duo Commission, ‘Kingdom Skank’ and ‘Standard’ from
MOBO award winning artist Guvna B, ‘I Don’t Pack a Matic’ and the
unforgettable ‘777 Intro’ from Dwayne Tryumf; and nothing but
electric, with pulsating sounds from Norwegian EDM group Jesus
Loves Electro. As if that wasn’t enough to get the crowd hyped the
night also contained a dose of energetic vibes with performances
from Rachel Kerr, Victizzle, Deborah, TP, New D Crew, Jayess and
Lyrical Soldier.
US Gospel sensation DA’ T.R.U.T.H completely took the crowd by
storm and delivered a fiery and raw performance of several notable
hits including ‘Hope’, ‘Without God’, ‘Jesus is for Everybody’ and
even led the crowd into an interlude of worship which began
with ‘Oh Give Thanks’, followed by a short medley of well-known
worship songs. The highlight of DA’T.R.U.T.H’s performance had
to be the incorporation of a dance off with fans in the audience.
The vibe was out of control at this point, as everybody including
DA’T.R.U.T.H bounced, hopped and skipped to the beat of ‘I Like Me’.

Amongst the high energy performances, the night also included
fun competitions and giveaways, a quirky photo booth for guests
to enjoy and an absolutely mega explosive UPRISE garage cypher
featuring DJ Selenki, A Star, Triple O, Mighty, Happi and Icie! The
talented MC's definitely brought their A-Game with endless wheel
ups, crazy flows and hard bars pumping the crowd into a complete
frenzy!
UPRISE Music TV presenter and Ambassador Faith Child said; "It
was such an amazing night. I don't know the time people had been
in such a nostalgic and loving environment. It was great to see so
many old faces. Definitely what was needed to revive the love and
unity within the UK Christian scene. Hopefully this will encourage
the birth of new artists and the return of past ones!"
Israel Peters, Producer and Creative Director for UPRISE Music TV
also added; “It has been a fantastic and rewarding journey. I’m
pleased to have witnessed the growth and progression of UPRISE.”
UPRISE MUSIC TV: THE REVOLUTION HAS BEEN TELEVISED
If it wasn’t clear already, it has been shouted from the rooftops
that UPRISE Music TV is recognised for being at the forefront of
raising the profile of UK gospel music and for the past five years the
platform has tirelessly gone to great lengths to promote the genre
of music that for many years, has been quarantined underground.
Arguably UPRISE has made a major contribution to UK gospel music
at large and for half a decade it has been bridging the gap between
UK gospel, international gospel music and the rest of the world.
Some would argue that if not for UPRISE they wouldn’t be aware of

"The first quarter of 2014 has witnessed that we could
re-ignite the mass vibrancy amongst the UK Christian
music scene for artists and music lovers alike. Judging
from the reception at the UPRISE Birthday Bash and
the events we've covered lately, the future of UK
Christian music is in safe hands."

Remember the original UPRISE gospel cypher?
Yes that was five years ago! How time flies!
Remember the sheer energy of it, and the way
you were encouraged and inspired bar after
bar and rhyme after rhyme? If you have been
a dedicated viewer of UPRISE over the years
at some point you would have come across
the phrase declaring that the ‘revolution will
be televised!’ And rightly so, because many
would also say that thanks to this movement
their music, their ministry and their identity
as young Christians from inner city areas in
the UK finally has a platform, a voice and an
avenue to reach masses of people.
I’ve only scratched the surface but it needs to be stated that UPRISE MUSIC TV has
achieved this and so much more in the five years, and three seasons deep into their
journey there is an evident progression not just in the look and feel of the show, its
content or music videos, but even in its impact. Right from the very beginning it set
out to be a movement not just another TV show that could have stayed for some
weeks and disappeared, but one that would truly come and set a mark and basically
become a household name. I regard it like UK gospel’s MTV in a sense, something for
the musical youth to identify with, catch my drift?
# 2G E TH ER MA GA Z IN E
How awesome must it have been to know
that a) you have a talent that you use to
glorify God and b) not only that but it
actually has the opportunity to get aired on
TV! Artists like Guvna B, Triple O, Commission,
Dwayne Tryumf, Rachel Kerr, Victizzle, even
the current Ambassador for UPRISE Faith Child
and many others all received major support
and exposure through UPRISE, and dare I say
contributing somewhat to their successful
careers in music today.
So with all their accomplishments in mind and five years of being one of the only TV
portals specifically following and upholding UK gospel music eventually a milestone
greeted us. Five years already and it had to be earmarked as a time for all to come
back together; hiatus or not, older, more mature and some married now, not exactly
fresh out of sixth form college or University anymore; it was a time to celebrate the
institution that is UPRISE.

THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR!
Expect to see Jamaica through my eyes, you'll see things I have
experienced during childhood like being in Mandeville and
buying Yam and Salt fish, going to Hellshire Beach to eat fry fish
and festival. You will also see as I explore some of the places
I have never been like the Rastafarian Village, Rose Hall and
hearing about the white witch of Rose Hall. There will also be
an interview with people like historian Dr Denton Rowe, artistic
director Yvonne Brewster OBE, hand writing expert Beverley East,
film maker Justine Henzell, daughter of film maker Perry Henzell
of The Harder They Come, a classic Jamaican crime film. These are
people who we very rarely get to hear their stories, but we need
to. It’s very inspiring to see that Jamaica has given birth to such
greats.
Brand new to OH TV is the first televised season of the African Cinema
Experience (A.C.E), the weekly movie series bringing movie lovers the best
African films! If you love Nollywood and good quality African movies you will
be pleased to know that some of the continent’s hottest blockbusters will
take over the channel every Friday night. A.C.E will kick off with Nollywood
smash hit Phone Swap on Friday 24TH April at 9PM GMT.

BRAND NEW UNPLUGGED
Get ready for a fresh new season of Unplugged, OH TV’s music programme that showcases
acoustic performances from an array of gifted singers. The new season will make a return
with a twist featuring a wider selection of talent; from the raw upcoming unsigned
musician to the more established signed artist! Watch out for famous faces as they also
perform acoustic versions of well-known songs.
Unplugged is a great avenue for upcoming artists to showcase their talent and give their
fans a chance to experience a stripped down acoustic sound of their music. It is OH TV’s
flagship show for showcasing talent so if you know you are the next Adele, Ed Sheeran,
Emile Sande or can move a crowd like Asa, Nneka, Bez, Erykah Badu, Zahara, Sade or Jill
Scott and talent that matches up to Musiq Soul Child, Lemar or Angel you can cease the
opportunity to appear in the next season! Get in touch now: [email protected]

SWEET
HOME
WITH ANGIE LE MAR
I usually visit Jamaica and stay with my parents from December to
early March, the highlight is always catching up with my parents.
I like using this time to write, regroup and get ready for the year
ahead. The biggest highlights during production for me was meeting
Sly Dunbar, an absolute legend. Half way through the interview he's
says he’d like come to studio and jump on a rhythm! So there I am
in the studio being produced by the famous man himself, then being
serenaded by Taurus Riley, sitting at home with Shaggy… only in
Jamaica!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT JAMAICA?
I love the people, I love how they make me feel proud and
enthusiastic about life. I love how inspired I feel when I go home, the
food and the music always excites me. To top it off the sunshine it’s
like you can't get enough of it!
We have a great line up from Marcia Griffiths to Shaggy and the
world famous producers Sly Dunbar of Sly & Robbie and a lovely
acoustic rendition from Taurus Riley.
SHAGGY
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN JAMAICA?
My favourite place is my hometown May Pen Clarendon, it is
where my Grandparents live and now my parents.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE JAMAICAN DISH TO EAT?
This dish I have to have before I leave Jamaica is always Ackee and
Salt fish with dumplings, green banana and yam.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE 'HOME' TO SOMEONE WHO HAS
NEVER BEEN?
Jamaica is a country that you will return to again and again,
because it is more than an island in the sun, it does something to
your soul, something no other country can do.
We caught up with Angie during production in Jamaica to find
out more about the upcoming show and what she loves most
about her native country.
WOULD YOU AGREE THAT THERE IS 'NO PLACE LIKE HOME' OR
DO YOU PREFER THE JOYS OF BEING A LONDONER?
HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP THE SHOW IN YOUR OWN
WORDS?
Home sweet home will capture many of the experiences I had
as a child, you will see why I fell in love with Jamaica as a little
girl, and why this Rock is so important to me.
I believe this will be a positive representation because this
experience had no agenda, it’s a pure portrayal of the Jamaica I
know and love. Often we seen a negative view this is just honest!
JAMAICA IS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! TELL US WHAT HAVE BEEN
YOUR HIGHLIGHTS OF BEING BACK HOME SO FAR?
CAN YOU FILL US IN ON WHICH MAJOR CELEBRITIES WILL BE
FEATURED IN THE SHOW?
SOON TO DEBUT ON OH TV IS THE EXCLUSIVE TELEVISION
SERIES HOSTED BY BRITISH TELEVISION COMEDIENNE
ANGIE LE MAR. IN THIS 13 PART SERIES ANGIE INVITES US
ON A JOURNEY BACK TO HER HOMELAND JAMAICA TO
REDISCOVER THE CULTURE AND LIFE AT HOME. FOLLOW
ANGIE AS SHE INTERVIEWS AND ENGAGES WITH THE
MOVERS, SHAKERS AND SHAPERS OF THE LAND, WHILST
DISCOVERING HER OWN LOVE FOR JAMAICA. EXPECT TO
EXPERIENCE JAMAICA THROUGH FOOD, CULTURE, MUSIC,
