She has a degree in library science and has worked at many state, city and school libraries before finding her calling as a professional quilting instructor, writer and designer. Her quilts are known for taking a traditional pattern and giving it her own unique "twist." Karen is intrigued with quilts of illusions and has been designing quilts with a 3-D look for several years. Karen is the author of Optical Illusions for Quilters (AQS), Combing Through Your Scraps (AQS), Floral Illusions (AQS) , 3 Quilters Celebrate the 4 Seasons (AQS) & 3-D Fun with Pandora’s Box, coauthored with Sharlene Jorgenson of Quilting from the Heartland. Her newest book is Celtic Pieced Illusions (AQS). She has been a fabric designer for over a decade, working with several New York based fabric houses and now working with Troy's Riverwoods Collections. Karen's current fabrics can be seen at karencombs.com/ newfabric.htm. Look for them at your local quilt shop! Karen's work has appeared in the Silver Dollar City Wallhanging Challenge, the Hoffman Challenge and in many magazines such as Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Traditional Quilter, Traditional Quiltworks, Sew Many Quilts, McCall’s Quilting, and Lady's Circle Patchwork. She was the "Feature Teacher" in the March 1997 issue of Traditional Quiltworks. Nominated for Teacher of the year in 1995, 2000 and in 2005, by Professional Quilter Journal, Karen travels nationwide to teach her techniques and methods. In 2012, Karen was honored to be asked to judge the IQA Quilt show. She has appeared on several TV quilting shows, among them Quilting from the Heartland, Series 700, Quilt Central, Quilt America and Simply Quilts, Show 411. Karen now lives in the rolling hills of middle Tennessee with her husband Rick, and their two sweet Shih Tzus; Cocca and Benji. Their grown children, Angela and Josh visit when they can! Next Newsletter April Edition Deadline is Friday March14th, 2014 (midnight) Send Newsletter Articles and Info to: Lois Christianson Email: [email protected] SFVQA NEWS Page 2 KATHY’S O'KORNER Hospitality: Oh, Happy St. Paddy's day, little lads, WOW ……… you February birthday quilters are great bakers!!! (Many comments from those who came back for seconds.) Just a reminder that the March birthday celebrants are up next for the goodies. And, if any of you are vacationing or miss your contribution month, feel free to bring your desserts any other month. WOW, I had so much fun at our February meeting! The Valentine’s strip club challenge was well received, we had 32 participants and everyone delivered and received their valentine's strips. I am looking forward to seeing some finish results from the valentine challenge. And yes, wasn't the Fabric Olympics great! I really enjoy coming up with fun activities for the Association to participate in. I don’t know if the SFVQA Olympians had fun but, I know the SFVQA fans had a great laugh watching them perform their events. The Bobbin Bottom Blast was the best! Thank you to our SFVQA Olympians: Bill, Sylvia, Hazel and Peggy. You guys were great sports! Thank you, Hospitality Ladies Fabric Olympics The “Great Finishing Quilt Off” is awesome! It looks like everyone is embracing this challenge to complete their unfinished quilts and so quickly, too. 24 finished projects in the first month. This is a “FUN” fundraiser for the Association. Thanks to Peggy & Robin for their efforts. Enough about the past it's time to talk about the March meeting, first, if you want to participate we will be holding a 6 inch charm exchange with a St. Patrick's Day theme fabrics. Please wear one of your charms on your name tag to show others, you’re here and ready to trade. Second, anyone delivering a real life leprechaun will win a pot of gold and the envy of everyone. Third, keep your eyes out for 4 leaf clovers. When I think of St. Patrick’s Day, I dream of a lucky 4 leaf clover, which reminds me of all the things I feel lucky about in life such as celebrating my mom’s 90th birthday on March 6, my family’s wellbeing, and sharing time with my SFVQA friends! I hope everyone at SFVQA reflects on what they are “lucky” for in their life! Your little lucky charm, Kathleen Patricia O’Milbrand SFVQA O’President Hello from Ways and Means. The basket winners from Feb. 10 guild meeting are: Valentine Basket won by Lynn Marie Chicken in a basket won by C.J.Forray Its's Wine O'clock won by Gerry Hogan Thank you Deanna Carter for donating the Wine O"Clock basket Since the response to "Fabulous Fat Quarters" was really exciting, we will do it again in a few months. SFVQA NEWS Page 3 Opportunity Quilt 2015 News from Workshops Our Quilt needs a name: Hi Everyone, it’s me again with NEWS FROM WORKSHOPS. We have Karen Combs for March 9th who will be teaching ‘PATCHWORK ILLUSIONS” Her workshop will be $45.00. You will learn to use color to enhance the 3-D effect. There is also a template to purchase in class to make this exciting tumbling block. Poppies Gone Wild Poppy Fiesta Star Garden Floral Fiesta Poppy Parade Decide your favorite and we will all choose at the March Meeting. Quilters for Others Thanks to all who joined us for our Quilters Playday February 17th. Our regular meeting is the LAST WEDNESDAY of each month. Please join us at St. James Presbyterian Church on March 26th from 9-3. St James is located on Ventura Blvd west of Tampa at Shirley Ave on the south side of the street. The Carls Jr is a nearby landmark. You can see in Linda Deckard’s report the many quilts, placemats and dog beds that we have all created for the use of others. For April we are having Bobbin Finley who will be teaching “TILE QUILTS” Reinventing a forgotten form. “The emphasis will be on how a tile quilt differs from other types of applique and how to get started making a tile quilt rather than on how to applique”. Bobbie will go over review of basic needle-turn hand applique. “You will learn a simple, direct way of working a linedrawing pattern and turning it into a beautiful piece. The method eliminates the usual hand-applique concerns of seam allowances, reversing images, and placement on the background. A pattern will be provided by Bobbie or you may use a line drawing of your own. Bobbie suggests the book. Tile Quilt Revival Reinventing a Forgotten Form by Carol Gilham Jones and Bobbie Finley, C&T Publishing, 2010. Bring your sewing machine and quilting essentials if you like. We have plenty for you to do if you just bring yourself and your enthusiasm. Please contact me if you would like to join in the fun. My phone number is 818 700 8173. Thanks so much. Jamie Roffredo your Workshop Chair Bring your lunch or buy it nearby. Bring a friend. We look forward to seeing you. Linda Deckard, Sheila Gee, Jan Lauritzen, Jan Livingston 2014/2015 Budget Thanks to webmaster, Lois Christianson, once again the complete Library catalog is available to you on our website. Go to SFVQA.com and select "Committees," the second title on the navigation bar. The drop-down menu lists LIBRARY as the second choice. Select it to go to the list of all our titles, now numbering over 500. You can scroll alphabetically by author or title. If you find something you want to reserve, give me a call or an email. From my home computer I can search more in detail by subject, so feel free to contact me. Thank you to the Budget Committee for creating a balanced budget for 2014/2015. The committee had to make some really hard decisions. Our SFVQA expenses are a lot higher than our income, as our membership numbers continue to drop each year and our expenses rise. To continue to have high quality and well known speakers, there is a high cost. These are only a few of the challenges the committee had to deal with. We cut all the fat we could but, we still had to eliminate two programs just to break even. I will be discussing everything with the membership in March. SFVQA will overcome this hurdle and will unite and work together to create new ‘fun”draising ideas, support their membership by selling Opportunity Quilt tickets, and share ideas on programing and creating revenue. Lorene Robbins, Librarian Thank you, Library Catalog Updated on the Web Kathy Milbrand, SFVQA President The 2015 Quilt Show Update Thanks to our genius members who came up with 5 fantastic themes and the membership narrowed it down to the winning choice for the theme for 2015 show, “Flights of Fantasy". The quilt challenge will be so much fun with that theme. And what a great theme for the Airtel Hotel location, as well. Look for continuous updates on the "Flights of Fantasy" 2015 Quilt Show.
