Sacred Heart School
SHMS 665-1808
Our mission is to form a Catholic community of faith and learning by living Gospel values,
promoting academic excellence, and serving those in need.
SHS Soup Luncheon
As the weather cools down please join us for a Chili and Chicken
Noodle Soup Luncheon! The staff and students of Sacred Heart
School will be serving chili, chicken noodle soup, taverns, veggies,
and ice cream from 11:00-1:00 on Tuesday, October 25th at the
Sacred Heart Parish Community Center. Part of the proceeds will go
to benefit a charity yet to be determined. A poster will be sent home to take to
your place of business to help spread the word. A free will offering will be taken.
If you happen to have any extra clean cool whip or butter sized containers with
lids, please send them with your child to school by Thursday, October 20th. We
invite all to come and bring friends! Thanks!
Sacred Heart School Pumpkin Carving Night
Looking for some fall family fun? Come to Sacred Heart
Elementary on Thursday, October 13 from 6:30-8pm.
All Sacred Heart School families are welcome.
Bring your own pumpkins to carve or paint, we will provide the rest. We
will have a variety of fun stations including a Free Fall Photo Shoot and
games for families to participate in. Drawings for door prizes will take
place throughout the night. Yummy treats, fun and fellowship! Hope to
see you there!
Free and Reduced Lunches
We have application forms in the office for anyone wishing to apply for free or
reduced meals. If you think you may qualify, contact Kathy or Sherry to request a
form or get more information. It is actually beneficial to our school to have all
those families who qualify apply for this benefit.
Spiritual Adoption
Thank you for helping your child develop a deeper understanding of
God’s love of life. Please continue to pray this prayer with your child
daily: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to
spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted.
Second Month - October
Keep praying for me! During this month I will grow to be about 2 inches long,
about the size of an adult thumb. You can see my ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. My
baby teeth are forming. My fingers and toes are growing and I am using my
muscles to kick, swim, and suck my thumb. I have brain waves and my skeleton is
changing from cartilage to bone. I am wonderfully and completely formed.
2nd Grade Students Learn about Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy
Mrs. Hunhoff’s second grade class at Sacred Heart Elementary will be studying
the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy all year long. This month, they
discussed Feeding the Hungry. They wanted to do more than just talk about
feeding the hungry. As a class, they chose to donate food to the Yankton
Contact Center. The students said it gave them a good feeling to help others just
like Jesus wants us to. “As Jesus’ disciples, we are to help those who need it.
The Works of Mercy tell us exactly what to do. We just have to do it. I pray my
students continue to help others no matter how small the deed. Every act of
mercy leads us closer to Jesus,” Mrs. Hunhoff remarked.
SHS to Support Rosary on the Radio
During the month of October, SHS is helping to support the evening
broadcast of the rosary on KVHT. Every teacher will have a change bowl on
his or her desk this month. All students and their families are encouraged to
help support this worthwhile ministry.
Fall Festival Parties
Fall Festival Parties for SHES will take place on Monday, October 31st. We will have a
fun filled time of games and Fall activities. Halloween costumes are not to be worn at
school.
SHS Teacher & Staff Appreciation Club
Please consider joining the Teacher & Staff Appreciation Club (TSA) for the 2016-2017
school year! With your donation, our teachers and staff will be able to enjoy a muchdeserved Christmas bonus. Each month from September through May we will draw a
winner of a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant to enjoy a meal on us. By donating
at the $100 level, your name will go into the monthly drawing. By donating at the
$150 level or more, your name will be entered in the monthly drawing, plus a yearend drawing for $100. We also welcome $50 donations to purchase gift cards to
Charlie's Pizza House or Minerva’s. Watch your child's backpack for more information.
Please return your donation to either school office by Friday, November 4th. Thank
you for your continued support for Catholic education!
Attention SHS Parents : Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up Thursday,
November 3rd & Monday, November 7th from 4-8 pm, both nights. It’s a tradition for
SHS parents to provide meals for the teachers and staff. Even if you don’t like to cook,
there are other opportunities to get involved. We also need donations of drinks, fruit,
and paper products.
To help at the elementary school, please contact Michelle Gutzmann by texting her at
(402) 202-4481, or email [email protected] to be added to the contact list.
To help at the middle school, please email Jill Kouri at ([email protected]) or text 6613813 to be added to the contact list.
You will receive an email 2-3 weeks before conference meals with a link to sign up
through Signup Genius. Thanks so much!
Fire Prevention Visitors
The week of October 9-15 has been
declared as Fire Prevention Week.
Various members of the Yankton
Volunteer Fire Department will be
coming into preschool through third
grade classrooms to give presentations
to the students to help them become
more aware of fire safety. This year’s NFPA slogan is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date!
Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years”. An Open House will be held at Fire Station #2
on Wednesday, Oct 12th from 5:30-7:00 P.M. to which everyone is invited to attend.
They will have hotdogs on a first come, first serve basis as well as displays and a sneak
peek of the new museum. The Fire Station is located at 201 W. 23rd St.
Thank you
The Tschetter family has set up an endowment fund so that all SHS students can enjoy
the tasty watermelon treat every year in memory of Dave and Connie. If you would like
to contribute to this fund or help to sponsor this event please contact the Foundation
Office.
SunnyD Book Spree
You can help SHS earn free books just by drinking SunnyD juice! Each
classroom that collects 20 UPCs from SunnyD will earn 20 free books from
Scholastic! Please clip and send SunnyD UPCs to school with your
child(ren) throughout October and November. The Book Spree ends 11/30/16.
For more information, go to www.sunnyd.com/bookspree. Thank you in advance!
Bingo
Come out for a spooky, fun night of bingo! SHS first bingo night is
Friday, October 28th at the Sacred Heart Gathering Center. Kids are
encouraged to dress in their Halloween costumes to enter their name
in the drawing. Pizza & refreshments are available for purchase
starting at 5:30. Bingo starts promptly at 6:30. Bingo is a great way to
spend a Friday evening with family and friends and support SHS at the same time!
Box Tops for Education Contest
We held our Fall Box Tops contest during the month of
September. The students being treated to a breakfast by their
principals are: from the Middle School site Cole Pedersen and
Makenzie Medeck; from the Elementary site Maya Villanueva and
Nora Krajewski.
We will need to mail our box tops in at the end of this month, but you can
keep saving them all year long. If you would like a listing of eligible products,
contact the school office or go to www.boxtopsforeducation.com where you
can sign up as a Box Top Booster Club member. Watch for those bright pink Box
Tops, and thanks for your support of this easy fundraiser!
This year we are saving the following items at Sacred Heart School:
Aluminum pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Sioux Falls
General Mills Box Tops for Education
Campbell product labels (must have the “Labels for Education” logo on them)
Tyson Project A+ (found on all Tyson chicken products)
Loaves4Learning (go to Loaves4Learning.com for more information)
Thanks for your help with these worthwhile projects. We appreciate your dedication and
hard work.
Donate Points: make a winning play for our school
Our school has joined the My Coke Rewards for Schools
program. That means by drinking Coca-Cola products, we
can all earn My Coke Rewards points and donate them to
support our school.
Donated points can be used to get rewards like sports equipment, art supplies, and
educational resources that help our students learn, play and have fun.
Go to www.mycokerewards.com/schools for more information and details.
Operation Christmas Child Comes to SHS
Operation Christmas Child, the world's largest Christmas project,
brings joy and hope to needy children around the world through giftfilled shoe boxes and the Good News of God's love. Since 1993, more
than 100 million shoe box gifts have been delivered to children in more
than 130 countries.
A small shoe box can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun,
but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children's
lives all over the world in Jesus' Name through the power of a simple gift.
SHMS students will be gathering small gifts, toys, cards, personal items, school items,
socks, stickers, etc to pack in OCC shoe boxes. More information will follow on how you
can help make a difference. Please pray for this opportunity to share God's love.
Eighth Annual Holiday Vendor Blender
Everyone is welcome to attend the 8th annual VENDOR BLENDER on
Saturday, November 5th from 10:00 to 2:00 at Sacred Heart

all!) things off your Christmas list! ****Over 40 Vendors! Lunch! Crafts!

Look for a colorful Vendor Blender flier in next month's Chalk Talk to be hung in your
workplace or shared with friends!

child/children need to do to receive both sacraments.

Sydney Ingalls, a 2012 graduate of Sacred Heart School,
generously donated her graduation money towards a
buddy bench for Sacred Heart Elementary School.
Sydney is the daughter of Kevin and Vonnie Carda.
After graduation I was talking to my mom about ways that
I could give back to the school. We discussed a “buddy
bench” for recess. I am thankful for the friends that I met
at Sacred Heart and the fun we had. Those friendships
helped ease the nervousness as we entered the high
school. When we gathered at the alumni mass, sang
songs, and talked of our traditions it was a feeling of family. Walking the SHS halls in our
graduation cap and gown brought a sense of pride to know that our accomplishments
were in part the efforts of our families and teachers along the way. Funny how the halls
and lockers seemed so much smaller, I guess we have grown in other ways also.
I realized that I have been very fortunate to be at Sacred Heart School. It was here that I
learned the value of hard work, academics, friends, family, and most importantly
my faith. I hope that the students at Sacred Heart will have those same experiences and
take time to talk and build friendships at recess on the “buddy bench.”
