FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT DiscussionMee+ngon ThermodynamicsOfAlloys _________________________________________________________________________________ TOFA2016 4-9September2016 CONFERENCE LOCATION The meeting will be held at "Parque Balneário Hotel” in Santos, Brazil. The Hotel was founded in 1912 and has privileged view of the ocean. The Parque Balneário Hotel is situated in the Gonzaga Beach, one of the best locations in Santos. Hotel website available at: http://www.parquebalneario.com.br/us/home/default.aspx ACCOMMODATION Accommodations in the Parque Balneário Hotel ✩✩✩✩✩ have been reserved at very special rates for those who make a reservation via the conference website. The organizing commission recommends that reservation be made as soon as possible, since the number of apartments is limited. The Organizing Committee also negotiated some extra rooms in Hotel Atlântico at very special rates. This hotel is located in front of Parque Balneário Hotel (at the other side of the street). For more information, please, check the Accommodation section on Tofa website: http://tofa2016.poli.usp.br/accommodation.html Participants which desire to find alternative housing possibilities should look for hotels or hostels close to the Gonzaga Beach (Praia do Gonzaga), which concentrates most of the Hotels in Santos. VISAS Citizens from certain countries may need a visa to enter Brazil. For further information participants are encouraged to consult their local travel agent or the nearest diplomatic mission of Brazil. The TOFA organizers will provide invitation letters for delegates, whose contributions are accepted, if needed. TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION By Flight Most international flights arrive in Brazil at the Guarulhos International Airport (IATA Code GRU) in the morning. A shuttle is programmed to leave this airport at 10:45 am. Participants interested in taking this shuttle are requested to communicate this to the conference e-mail ([email protected]). Since the first flights arrive around 4:00 am this may result in a long waiting at the Terminal, therefore the participants should be aware that one commercial company operates a regular line departing from the Airport (Terminal 2, west wing) towards Santos Bus Station, these buses are operated by Viação Cometa (http://www.viacaocometa.com.br) and there is a large offer of buses leaving with intervals of 1 to 1.5 hours from 6:00 am until 22:00 (10:00 pm). The trip to Santos takes about two hours. In the company website you can find the precise time table of these buses, in the form type “Guarulhos – Aerop. Cumbica (SP)” as origin and “Santos (SP)” as destination, the form asks also for the Departure date and the return date, you can leave this last information empty or type something there. It has no effect on the search for the departure trip. In the website you can even buy your ticket in advance, but be advised that the corresponding form is only given in Portuguese (it is, however, selfexplanatory). If you want to buy this ticket consider that we usually count about one hour between the airplane landing time and leaving the airport in the arrival gate (at best), there is about 20 minutes walk between Terminal 3 (where you will most likely arrive) and Terminal 2. The price of the ticket is about R$29.00 which currently means something like USD 9.00 (or EUR 8.00). Of course, the shuttle will be offered free of charge. By car From São Paulo you reach Santos by either Via Anchieta (SP 150) or Via Imigrantes (SP 160) highways (both are administered by Ecovias: http://www.ecovias.com.br). Via Imigrantes is more modern (less curvy) and is mostly preferred by the drivers. But beware that both Highways have a toll on descent. If you take the Via Imigrantes you should drive past the Serra do Mar (if you are not the one driving, pay attention to the view) and follow the shields toward Santos and Guarujá (it will bring you to the intersection highway, SP 59, which joins Via Imigrantes and Via Anchieta in the plains area), again following the shields towards Santos, you will enter the last part of the Via Anchieta. You will drive past the Port area and following the normal traffic you will reach a tunnel, go forward (the street shields indicate “Praias”). You will reach the Avenida Bernardino de Campos (also known as “Canal 2”) drive forward until you reach the Beach Avenue (Avenida Presidente Wilson). Enter this avenue, but prepare to turn left in the first return (about 100 m after the intersection with Avenida Bernardino de Campos). Drive past the access to Avenida Bernardino de Campos, but prepare to turn left again, you will see a shield indicating “Avenida Ana Costa”, enter the avenue and prepare to park, because the Hotel is right at the beginning of the avenue. If you are driving to the Hotel Atlântico, go forward and make a return at the Roundabout, because the Hotel Atlântico is right in front of the Parque Balneário Hotel. By bus Regular commercial buses leave São Paulo from the Jabaquara Bus Station, integrated with the underground service (Metrô) through line 1 (blue). The Jabaquara station is the final station in this underground line. From there you will find many options of regular lines to Santos. Ticket price is about R$ 30.00 (from São Paulo). There are also regular lines to Campinas, São Carlos (night bus) and São José dos Campos. The Bus station in Santos is located at Avenida Ana Costa, a few blocks away from either the Parque Balneário or the Atlântico hotels, there is a Taxi Spot at the Bus station. Public Transportation in São Paulo Some of you will spend some time in the city of São Paulo, so it is advisable to give information about the public transportation system in the city. Transportation is made mostly by buses, but the underground network is connected with the train network and gives access to many places in the city. A travel costs R$3.80 (either by bus, or by underground/train), you pay inside the bus or in the counter before entering the underground station. In the wake of the Olympics, the company which administers the system, SPTRANS, introduced the Bilhete Único Turista. This is a card which you acquire at the SPTRANS posts and charge with money in automatic machines. This can be used to pay for the transportation. The advantage is that one ticket (R$3.80) allows you to drive in up to four bus lines in a period of 2 hours (even in the return direction). You may also integrate an underground and a bus ticket at a discount price. There is no further information on the subject, so, if you are interested, you should seek information in the SPTRANS post located in most of the major underground stations. Currency Brazilian currency is the Real (plural, Reais), symbol R$ or BRL. Oficial exchange rates are about 1 USD = R$ 3.20 or 1 EUR = R$ 3.60, but exchange counters may practice different rates as well as charge taxes or fees. Bank cards are mostly accepted (especially Visa and MasterCard banners), but it is advisable to carry at least something like R$100.00 with you for small expenses. Prefer the exchange counters at the airport. There are two types of banknotes in circulation in Brazil, the so-called “Primeira e Segunda Família do Real”, respectively, Old and New. These two types differ in size and design of the same, to facilitate the identification, below is presented a schematic picture. The notes of the second family (New) have different sizes from each other, while the former have all the same size. The Cesário Bastos Building is an historical building located in downtown Santos at the end of the Ana Costa Avenue, with the Monte (Mount) Serrat as a backdrop. It was founded in 1916 (hence celebrating its 100th anniversary this year) designed in neoclassic style by Prof. Antônio Francisco de Paula Souza, the first Director of the Escola Politécnica. The building is highlighted in the Heritage Conservation List of the São Paulo State. Since 2012 the building hosts the Petroleum Engineering Course maintained by the Escola Politécnica. The reception will start at 19:00 (7:00 pm) with the show of the Rateria, an association of students in the form of a Escola de Samba percussion group (in Portuguese this is called “Bateria”, the punch in the name Rateria due to the symbol adopted by the students of the Escola Politécnica: a mouse, or rato). It will be followed by a get-together cocktail party. Wednesday, September 7th Conference excursion Departure from Parque Balneário (conference site) at 14:00 (2:00 pm) to the Orquidário Municipal. The Orquidário is a traditional Zoobotanical Garden located close to the José Menino Beach. In its 24,000 m2 the park displays samples of native flora and fauna. The attractions include free animals which share the space with the human visitors (a Peacock and small rodents, called “Cutias”) and the Orchid greenhouse, with many specimens which will be hopefully flourishing at the time. More information: http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/node/19364 Next we will walk to the Roberto Santini Municipal Park, an artificial riff which advances 400 m into the sea. The park hosts a monumental sculpture of the renowned Brazilian artist Tomie Ohtake (1913 - 2015), which commemorates the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil. This sculpture was inaugurated in 2008 with the presence of Prince Naruhito (heir to the Japanese Throne), during the centenary of the arrival of the first ship (Kasato Maru) with Japanese families to work in the Coffee Plantations in the State of São Paulo. More information: http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guia-de-santos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/orla/ roberto-mario-santini-municipal-park From there we will enter the buses again towards the Aquário Municipal. The aquarium, as its name indicates, hosts and displays a large selection of the marine fauna both from Brazil and from the whole world. Highlights are the Penguins and the Sea Lion. The Aquário Municipal is the second park in number of visitors in the State of São Paulo, being surpassed only by the Zoological Garden in the city of São Paulo. More information: http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guia-de-santos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/orla/aquarium Thursday, September 8th Conference dinner The conference dinner will be held at the “Mansão da Ilha”, located in the Porchat Island, in the neighboring city of São Vicente. The island marks the entrance of the São Vicente bay, the ancient port where the Portuguese Caravelas once anchored. More information: http://www.mansaodailha.com.br/ (Portuguese only) Accompanying person’s program The selection of places to visit in Santos is so large that we decided not to build and offer pre-defined routes. On the contrary, the personal of the Viva Paris travel agency will be on site to discuss with the participants what they wish to see. The attractions can be visited alone or in small groups. The travel agency will be happy to assist the participants in building the tours that best fit the interests and possibilities of the participants. Examples of attractions to visit in Santos: The Maritime Museum http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guia-de-santos/ locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/orla/maritime-museum The Sea Museum http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guia-de-santos/ locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/orla/sea-museum The Fishing Museum http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guiade-santos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/orla/ fishing-museum The Carmo Convent Complex http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guiade-santos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/ centro-historico/carmo-convent-complex The Coffee Museum http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guiade-santos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/ centro-historico/coffee-museum The Pelé Museum http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guia-desantos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/centrohistorico/pele-museum The Streetcar Tour http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guia-de-santos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/centro-historico/ streetcar-tour Nossa Senhora de Monte Serrat Sanctuary http://www.turismosantos.com.br/eng/guia-de-santos/locais/ir/atracoes-em-santos/centro-historico/ nossa-senhora-do-monte-serrat-sanctuary The National Monument “Ruínas do Engenho de São Jorge dos Erasmos” This is an advanced base of the Culture and Extension Deputy Dean’s office of the University of São Paulo and shows the ruins of one of the first sugar processing factories (“Engenho”) in the Colonial Brazil (the place is believed to exist since 1534. To give an idea of its historical relevance, the first Portuguese village in Brazil, the neighboring city of São Vicente, was founded in 1532). There is a modern auditorium where a documentary film about archaeological works developed there is projected. More information: http://www.engenho.prceu.usp.br/ (Portuguese only) Meals Unfortunately it was not possible to secure funds to organize subsided meals (lunch and dinner, except for the Conference Dinner on Thursday, of course). On the contrary, the participants who so desire will be invited to join the organizing committee in one of the most typical Brazilian cultural activities: to have lunches or dinners in the food court of a mall (with the typical “quilo” restaurants, in which you pay proportional to the weighted amount of food you place in the plate). Apart from that, the vicinity of the Parque Balneário offers a large selection of restaurants and bars where several different cuisines and drinks, including the famous Caipirinha, can be tasted. PUBLICATION As announced previously, the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion (JPED) will publish an especial issue dedicated to the Discussion Meeting on Thermodynamics of Alloys 2016. Authors interested in publishing their contributions in this issue will be requested to announce their intent during the meeting. The list of prospective authors, with the titles of their work will be compiled by the Chair, Prof. Dr. Cláudio G. Schön (acting as guest editor for this issue) and will be sent to Prof. Dr. John E. Morral (Editor-in-chief of JPED) by the end of the meeting. Authors are then requested to write their manuscripts following the magazine's “Instruction to authors” and to submit them using the https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jped link by October 31st, making sure to indicate in the process that the manuscript is intended for the TOFA2016 special issue. The works will be submitted to the normal peer reviewing process of the magazine and the authors are requested to respond to the reviews in timely manner. It is the intention of the magazine to have all accepted contributions published online by February 2017. WEATHER September is the last month of winter in the Southern Hemisphere, but for Brazil this does not necessarily means cold weather. Historically temperature in Santos vary on average between a low of 17ºC and a high of 23ºC (respectively 63ºF and 73ºF), but temperatures as low as 9ºC (48ºF) and as high as 38ºC (100ºF) have already been registered. Therefore we recommend to bring clothes both for cold and for hot weather (do not forget, Santos is a Beach, so bring also appropriate clothes if you desire to spend some time there). September, especially the first week, is also expected to be dry (winter in tropical countries generally means the dry season), but as Brazil is a tropical country, rain is not forbidden. Santos geography, located on the coast and bordering the hill range known as “Serra do Mar”, also favor rain precipitation. In the matter of fact, when we did our Organizing Commission Meeting last year on Sept. 7th, it was raining and it was cold. We are monitoring the weather forecast and we will act on the excursion plan in case of bad weather in the day. We all expect, of course, this will not be necessary. HEALTH As you are aware, Dengue fever, as well as the lesser known Zika and Chikungunya fevers, are endemic in Brazil. These three diseases are transmitted by the bite of the infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. Good news is that the low temperatures and the dryer weather in winter reduce the mosquito activity, so the risk of infection decreases in the period. Prevention can be made using a natural product based on Citronella Eucalyptus leaves which repels the mosquito, this can be acquired in any pharmacy in the country, and does not require prescription (Portuguese name is “Repelente de Mosquito”). Far more important in the winter is Influenza A, there have been reports of fatalities due to this disease in the beginning of this winter. The virus strain in the southern hemisphere is the same that circulated in the northern hemisphere in the previous winter, so, if you are immunized, you are most likely protected. As always Influenza is more dangerous for the children, for the elderly and for persons who have already chronic respiratory diseases. Finally, Santos is not a Yellow Fever area, so there is no necessity to take the Yellow Fever vaccine. However, if you desire to extend your visit to Brazil to visit the Amazon or the Pantanal Matogrossense, for example, you should be immunized against this disease. It is important to take the vaccine 10 days before entering the affected area, otherwise it will not be effective. Consult your physician.
