Which role does gender play? How many gender stereotypes are attached
to children from a startlingly young age? Where does the gender divide
begin and when does it start to exclude? How much courage does it take to
stand up for your own ideas and needs and to realise them irrespective of
society’s idea of what is “right” or “wrong? “Blue for Boys & Pink for Girls” is
a dance performance that deals with the gender question – great for young
and old alike.
At a time when our ageing western society has a pessimistic view of the
changing population structure, the Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn
takes us on a wonderful journey through numerous generations. During
an expedition through Korea she asked grandmothers to dance for her.
The dances performed by the sixty to ninety-year-old women was so natural and enthralling that she invited an entire group of them to join her
on stage as part of her latest dance production. She additionally presents
grandmothers in film clips, cleverly contrasting them with dancers from
her own ensemble. The result is a moving and inspiring ode to the mothers
and grandmothers who have helped to shape our lives.
KASERNE ON THE ROAD:
IN THE CITY CENTRE
THEATRE / DANCE
For this exceptional poster project, the performance artist Tim Etchells
has selected short, mysteriously poetic as well as thought provoking fragments from interviews, which Anina Jendreyko and Deborah Neininger
conducted with people throughout Basel. The statements are an insight
into the wishes, needs and unfulfilled dreams of people in Basel who do not
have the right to vote. What are their concerns and wishes? What do they
wish to change for themselves and those around them? The project will be
presented on posters around the city after the National Council elections.
The Kosovo-Albanian dancer Labinot Rexhepi and the Swiss performer
and author Beatrice Fleischlin consider what they have in common and
whether this is relevant for our co-existence. They discover that they differ greatly. The coincidence of opposites is a central topic in their play
“thinking about medea”. Using an ancient legend and numerous misconceptions, the two performers contemplate whether a real encounter is
possible at all, particularly if it evokes a feeling of otherness. What holds
us together, deep down inside, is the search for a coexistence that fails to
exclude a desire of freedom and unity.

KASERNE ON THE ROAD: CAFÉ HAMMER
GUEST PERFORMANCE
“FUX gewinnt” by the FUX theatre collective deals with competitions as
the ubiquitous principle of modern day society. The contemporary ideal of
happiness is the starting point for a performative research project in which
FUX briefly play competitions as their nine-to-five job in order to become
real experts in the art of winning. They will spend fourteen days completing crosswords, playing scratchcards and taking photos for c reative competitions. The audience is invited to watch them, to join in and to submit
entries. At the end of the two weeks, FUX will solemnly declare the actual
winnings and reveal the true findings of the project to the audience.

A breakdown in the middle of nowhere. Six long-haired rockers and a dog
step out of a small car towing a caravan. Using plastic bags, wigs, snow
spray and a bubble machine, they create small installations and amazing
wonders. The works by Philippe Quesne generate a congenial environment
for theatre, performance and visual art and enchant audiences with subtle
humour and wonderful aesthetics. The two highly successful works “L’effet
de Serge” (will be performed at Theater Basel on 23 February as part of a
cooperation event) and “La Mélancolie of the Dragon” have led to Philippe
Quesne being invited to leading international festivals.

Does nature actually exist or is it just a figment of our imagination? And
who does it belong to in this age of its biotechnological reproducibility?
Using various media, four actors and two musicians investigate two interrelated problem areas: climate change and synthetic biology. They experiment with rituals from political speeches and private conversations, and
compile them as a “concert of perspectives”. A collage of folk and art songs
of romanticism takes us back to early industrial capitalism, a period when
nature admiration und the fear of losing nature experienced an initial
boom. A musical-theatrical research project by Christoph Frick, Martin
Schütz and Bo Wiget.

PLATFORM FOR YOUNG THEATRE MAKERS
What drives young, up-and-coming artists, which topics do they focus on
and how do they create theatre? For the seventh time, Treibstoff Theatertage Basel offers young performance and theatre makers a platform for
their new productions at the start of the season. This year, Kaserne Basel
oversees all site-specific projects: At the Technology Fair for Building and
Infrastructure ‘ineltec.’, the performance collective Blöchle/Fornezzi researches practical everyday relationships between humans and technology. At Carambolage Bar, the “We Ate Lobster” group organises an exhibition of still life paintings by prison inmates – the artists will be present
at the exhibition. Based on the legendary battle of St. Jakob an der Birs in
1444, the helium x collective creates a mixture of re-enactment, sports
event, theatre rehearsal and medieval jousting experience at the Rankhof stadium. Additionally, ROXY Birsfelden hosts projects by the Happy
End Company, Schichten, :objective:spectacle: and L’OUTIL, while junges
theater basel presents work by Anta Helena Recke / Julian Meding.

For his latest work “Mysterion”, the choreographer Kiriakos Hadjiioannou
decided to research secular and spiritual rituals. He now invites the
Kaserne Basel audience to come and join the dancers and to perform a new
and unique ritual. The aim of this ritual is not transfiguration, but extreme
clarity. Hadjiioannou and his artistic team translate movement material
researched in Mexico into contemporary choreographic structures, using
fragments of the stage design and a patchwork of costumes. “Mysterion”
is not a performance about rituals, but a ritual of contemporary dance.

KASERNENPLATZ
Gábor Varga and József Trefeli have a wonderful feel for traditional dances
and their reinterpretation. The starting point of “Creature” is traditional
accessories, like sticks, whips, masks and costumes – dusty and long since
forgotten. Traditional dance and the related accessories are ritually dismantled and brought to life in a new way for the audience. In Basel, the two
choreographers will use folklore to create their own “fakelore” – during
outdoor performances at Kasernenplatz.

“Forever Yours”
COPRODUCTION
The SAVOY group, led by the director and scenographer Dominic Huber,
develops a performative, multimedia space installation – closely based on
the narration of the protagonists in Dostoyevsky’s novel “The Double”. This
narrative actually reads like an intriguing blueprint for our online behaviour, somewhere between narcissism, thirst for adventure and paranoia.
“Forever Yours” is a maze at the centre of which there is a club whose inner
workings resemble an online forum – the audience moves through this
unknown territory as curious newbies to the point of being invited into
the intimacy of a private chat. This is where the story of the double begins –
initially as a report by someone else, but gradually becoming your own
experience.
GUEST PERFORMANCE
KASERNE ON THE ROAD: HOTEL EULER
“Room Service” is an interactive video performance that accompanies four
people in separate rooms during a sleepless night at Hotel Euler in Basel.
Nestled in the world of room service and in the knowledge that almost
everything is available here, the performers of the Gob Squad collective become prisoners of their own needs. The audience follows the performance
on four monitors from the comfort of the hotel’s conference room, while
the intimacy of the rooms increasingly transforms into different stages.
The intense stare of the performers into the camera indicates that they are
well aware of the audience’s presence. The knowledge of being able to contact them and even being able to invite them up to their rooms eventually
helps them to survive the night.

The “Uni*Form” project defines a new chapter in the joint works of art by
the Belgian filmmaker Jorge Léon and the Swiss choreographer Simone
Aughterlony. Discipline and authority are the recurrent themes of
Aughterlony’s work. Eight performers take to the stage dressed as police
officers. The clothes give them an air of authority, but they appear to have
forgotten how to exercise this power. Under the watchful eyes of the audience, the uniformed performers carry out their “police duties”, failing to
keep things under control, but refusing to capitulate. A highly intriguing,
complex game starts to evolve between the viewers and the actors, a game
of possession, of the use and abuse of power.

GUEST PERFORMANCE
Rimini Protokoll DE/CH
“Situation Rooms”
People everywhere are crying out/writing/demonstrating about free space.
But why and for what is this space actually needed? For “NOISE”, the director Sebastian Nübling set out with eight young people from junges theater
basel in search of answers. Since today’s political environment is regarded
by many as being the hobby or playground of the older generation, the
youngsters decided to go beyond protesting, criticising and bemoaning
the situation. It appears to make more sense to accelerate neo-liberalism
with its false promises of freedom, thus running it into the ground and
making sure it can never be saved. This would create the space for something new. Music, action and live-screening are the cornerstones of this
exemplary evening of free space and fantasy.

KASERNE ON THE ROAD:
DREISPITZHALLE BASEL
After “Radio Muezzin”, the successful theatre collective Rimini Protokoll
returns to Kaserne Basel (as part of the wildwuchs festival) with “Remote
Basel” and “Qualitätskontrolle”. “Situation Rooms” brings together people whose biographies have been shaped by weapons. They meet on a film
set where the globalised world of assault rifles and drones, of leaders and
refugees has been replicated. The audience – navigated by video images –
enters this obstacle course. “Situation Rooms” is a multi-perspective shooting, a multiple simulation cinema – as three dimensional as the theatre
itself.

“Ossip Mandelstam. A performance”
COPRODUCTION
The Geneva-based dancer and choreographer Ioannis Mandafounis, a former member of the Forsythe Company, traces the footsteps of the lyricist
Ossip Mandelstam (1891 – 1938) together with the legendary Peter Brook
actor Bruce Myers and the dancers Elena Giannotti and Robert Mosca. This
work focuses on Mandelstam’s autobiographical volume of prose “Noise
of Time” (1925) – an atmospheric portrait of pre-revolutionary Russia and,
at the same time, the memories of his childhood and youth full of odours
and sounds. Mandafounis is interested in the concurrence and aesthetic
proximity of a dance performance and a theatrical monologue for which
he wishes to create a collective composition in space.

“Unusual Weather Phenomena Project”
COPRODUCTION
Based on the “Handbook of unusual natural phenomena” by the US physicist William R. Corliss (1926 – 2011), director and musician Thom Luz
develops a piece about daily life and exceptional circumstances. Corliss
was convinced the best way to discover reality is by taking a closer look
at anomalies. We constantly talk about the weather, try to understand it
and even control it – now it is time for the weather to talk about us. The
performers and musicians on stage become weather-makers and install
a weather system that takes on a life of its own. They attempt to construct
something that is larger than themselves in a manmade space.
As part of Das Tanzfest, Ioannis Mandafounis presents a personal work for
two dancers and two spectators in the courtyard of the Art Museum. Visitors to the museum can sit down on two chairs and Ioannis Mandafounis
and Aoife McAtamney will dance for them as long as they stay seated.

EDUCATIONAL PROJECT
BASLER PUPPENKLINIK
Despite it being enormously long and allegedly ‘unreadable’, the experimental novel “The Making of Americans” has had a central role in the
literature and art scene for more than a century. Why is this avant-garde
work still such a hot topic today? It is set at a time when Europe was a
continent of emigrants. Over one weekend in December, people from all
areas of work and life will gather to perform the entirety of Stein’s text in
a marathon reading. The audience will experience a 60-hour continuous
read-in. Gertrude Stein insisted that the text must be read aloud and in
groups; since 1974, marathon readings of the “Americans” have become
quite a tradition in New York. The reading in Basel will be accompanied by
group cooking sessions, talks and introductions to the text.

“homo digitalis” focuses on new working methods in an increasingly digital world. In their second joint project – after “Mein Enkel 2072” –Moira
Gilliéron, Ariane Koch and Zino Wey take a closer look at how our working
lives are changing beyond recognition, stuck in front of computer screens
in a world of global networks. What impacts are these changes having on
mankind as a social being? And how can the digital world be conceived?
Four performers embark on a utopian search for answers to these questions. The starting point of their research is the Internet platform fiverr.
com, where they will purchase the majority of the props and contents for
$5, thus transforming their piece into a centre of trade for a global, digitally networked theatre business.

DANCE FESTIVAL STEPS
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is seen as one of most original performers of the contemporary dance scene. He works with leading names from other artistic
disciplines. After receiving rave reviews for “m¡longa”, performed in the
Reithalle in 2014, the latest production of the artist with Moroccan-Belgian
roots is possibly the last time audiences will be able to see him on stage.
“Fractus” comes from “fraternal” – brotherly. And it is in this type of close
relationship that the protagonists find themselves: Three dancers create
one body characterised by several colours and personalities. A group of live
musicians from Japan and Korea accompany the trio, forming a collective
that composes and sings together.
COPRODUCTION
Inside a black box, a high-tech camera fills the space with invisible lines,
fields and geometric bodies. Nine dancers with urban, contemporary and
classical dance styles cut through the invisible structures in the space with
intense and visible dynamics. Upon contact they trigger an acoustic pulse
that is transformed into music. Beat and sound manipulation are visualised in dance. The dancing bodies become an interface between projected
spaces and acoustic expression. Diverse dance styles as well as auditory
and visual perception are synchronised in the immediacy of the moment.
The bodies in space become contact points, the one becomes many and
the many become one.

“The Ventriloquists Convention”
KASERNE ON THE ROAD:
UNIVERSITÄTSSPITAL BASEL
Mats Staub’s works of art are personal archives compiled of past and present moments. In his video installation “Feiertage”, the Swiss artist asks
different people nine personal questions about their life which can all be
answered with a single number: How old are you?
How many different jobs
have you had?
How many good friends have you lost?
How many people
have you been in love with? The process of reflection until the question is
answered is followed closely by the camera. You see faces and hear answers
which invite you to consider your own life in numbers. Furthermore, there
are also posters on show from the long-term project “Zehn wichtigste Ereignisse meines Lebens”, which started at Kaserne Basel in 2012 and has
since been presented at numerous venues throughout Switzerland and
Germany.
COPRODUCTION
Each year, the state of Kentucky hosts the world’s largest convention of
ventriloquists featuring artists from around the globe. In cooperation
with the author Dennis Cooper and the Puppet Theatre Halle, the sought-
after artist Gisèle Vienne, who has previously performed her works “This
Is How You Will Disappear” and “The Pyre” at Kaserne Basel, has created a
fictitious reconstruction of this event. The multi-layered dialogues slowly
reveal the psychological complexity of the characters. What is said, what
is thought, what comes from the unconscious are expressed aloud by the
ventriloquists, their puppets and the ‘third voice’ of the ventriloquists. It
develops into a play in which both are suddenly visible – the madness and
the normality of these conversations, as well as the shift from seemingly
uncomplicated relations to a real psychological maze.

The movement artist, fervent tinkerer and reckless wannabe Martin
Zimmermann (Zimmermann & de Perrot) uses his latest solo project
“Hallo” to delve deep into his inner feelings, to fling the absurdities of his
inner life inside out and to get a grip on his bizarre thought processes. The
setting for this latest work is a shop window style space to showcase the
absurd existence of his alter ego. This seemingly static illusory world turns
out to be more dynamic than thought and basically runs out of control.
When objects come alive and start flying around his head, and the tragicomic figure fails to tame and restrain them, thus being forced to fall out
of the frame, the borders between reality and fiction become obliterated –
and the room overflows with magic.
Messrs Häusermann, Ratschko and Ursin present a music-theatrical work
in five remarkable episodes. As full-time employees of RadioMoos, the musicians, announcers, technicians, editors and office staff are united in personal union. They represent musical requests, turntable bestsellers, news
and weather, philosophical debate, advice service, satirical sketches. So far,
so good. But from the very start, other sounds and voices begin to creep in,
providing the soundtrack of this radio day with a surreal echo. A unique

GUEST PERFORMANCE
A patient dies in a nursing home. Her fortune is inherited by her Eastern European carer. The dead lady’s family claim the migrant is a deceitful woman acting out of revenge for the abysmal working conditions. At the same
time, a university research team and an insurance team are busy investigating the case. It turns into a quagmire of family tragedy and management technicians, taboos and moral standards. As life expectancy increases, post-industrial societies are finding it more and more difficult to keep
up with pension payments. Care work is still frowned upon and is predominantly carried out by women and men from “emerging nations”. “Pflege

euphorically free welfare work from the constraints of efficiency.
