May 2012 Volume 1 Issue 4 Sliema Swimming Monthly Special points of interest: Easter Meet 2012 Summer School 2012 International Easter Meet Sliema swimmers produced a fantastic performance in the 19th International Swimming Meet that was held at the National Pool between the 12 th and the 14th of April. This great performance was well deserved knowing the fact that all swimmers and coaches put in a lot of energy and dedication in their training. The team included 24 swimmers who participated in a total of 132 races. The team managed to win 51 medals, which included 16 Gold, 26 Silver and 9 Bronze medals. Notably, the swimmers who attend our Swimming School produced a large number of Personal Bests (over 70 in 90 races). A great performance indeed was shown by our 1999 boys as Matthew Micallef and Thomas Wearing dominated the category. Matthew won 5 Golds and 2 Silvers whilst Thomas managed 2 Golds, 4 silvers and 1 bronze. Young Kyle Buhagiar also obtained some fine results with a tally of four medals, whilst Jordan Calleja also won 4 Silver medals. National team swimmers, Andrea Agius, Daniel Galea, Jeffrey Galea and Matthew Galea as always produced some good results for our Team. These meets also featured a number of teams from different countries such as the UK, France, Italy, Romania and Germany. The meet was of a very high standard and the organisation was impeccable thanks to Mr. Mark SLIEMA A.S.C. Swimming Section Galea and his team. Team spirit was high during the races as all the swimmers were cheered by their team mates and supporters during their respective races. All coaches were satisfied with the results obtained and the team is already preparing for the National Championships that will be held in July. The swimmer became a symbol of resilience and resurgence in Norway with that victory, the country's first swimming world title at a time when it was in desperate need of something to cheer for. "We need to stay united," On Tuesday 30th April, Norway was in mourning after Dale Oen died suddenly from cardiac arrest during a pre-Olympic training camp in Flagstaff, Ariz. He was 26. federation president Per Rune Eknes confirmed to The Associated Press. He said it was still unclear what led to the cardiac arrest. Dale Oen won the 100-meter breaststroke at last year's world championships in Shanghai, three days after a bombing and shooting spree by Anders Breivik killed 77 people back home in Norway -including children at a summer camp. Dale Oen dedicated the win to the victims of that massacre, pointing to the Norwegian flag on his cap after the finish to send a message to his countrymen back home. "We need to stay united," he said after the race. "Everyone back home now is of course paralyzed with what happened, but it was important for me to symbolize that even though I'm here in China, I'm able to feel the same emotions." FINA, the world governing body of swimming, lauded "his courage in Shanghai when shining in the pool immediately after the sad events that had taken place in Norway." "He had given to media and fans an image of a brave and sincere athlete, paying a heartfelt tribute to his compatriots from the pool deck in China," FINA said. "His example had been one of the most vivid moments of those championships." Dale Oen, one of Norway's biggest medal hopes for the London Olympics, was found collapsed on his bathroom floor late Monday and was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Flagstaff Medical Center, Norwegian swimming 'Oen Was A Role Model' A tibute by Jessica Hardy the world-record holder in the 100-meter breaststroke. The swimming community is special and unique; it's definitely a close-knit group. No matter where in the world you come from, we all support, encourage and cheer for each other, without exception. Swimming is an isolating sport, one that requires a lot of sacrifices in the interest of becoming the best. It has to be one of the most physically demanding sports possible. Because of this, swimmers are like a family of one. Alexander Dale Oen exemplified a champion: Not only did he win the 100-meter breaststroke last summer at the world championships, swimming a "textile world-record" (the fastest time every swum without the aid of a buoyant suit) and defeating one of the most competitive heats in history, but he did so only three days after the devastating attack that killed 77 people in his home country. Page 5 Oen was someone that every single person in the swimming community respected, and we will continue to remember him as an example of courage and strength, and as a role model. As a fellow breaststroker, I will remember him and his strength throughout the length of my career.
