OUR NEXT REHEARSAL
Tuesday, February 7 at 7:00 p.m.
with SPECIAL GUEST EV NAU
Can you find the mistake in this picture?
(No… that’s how short the tenor really is!
It’s something else.)
Actually, it has to do with the guy singing baritone on the
far right.
While we really like Aaron Ledger, the Heralds would have
to say we’re actually kinda partial to his NEWLY
ANNOUNCED replacement.
It’s someone quite near and dear to us all.
Yep. It’s BILL BILLINGS. Our lovable,
talented and dapperly mustachioed director.
We are very, very impressed that he’s stepped up to help
out these “struggling” district champs!
And, we know, that as long as there’s no dancing required,
Bill will do quite well in this foursome.
But, just how does it do it all? He’s a committed family
guy, a successful bank executive, a society district officer,
a gifted barbershop director and coach, there’s rumors that
he’s launching a new oil-change and tanning salon… and
now here he is joining another quartet. Well, how ever he
does it, we’re very proud he’s also a HERALD!
Show prep for Feb 26 continues!
And don’t forget our
weekly afterglow at
HoH rehearsal visitor Phil Stern was back again …
… from Brooksville!
Weekly rehearsals: Tuesdays, 7PM at Scottish Rite Auditorium, 5500 Memorial Blvd. Tampa

Thanks to some guys who have stepped in
to help HoH in some technical ways!
Both Andrew Wheeler and Bill Glasgow have
had to take a short break from HoH due to
work obligations. That left management of
our learning CD’s and the weekly video
recording and upload of our rehearsals out
there in “limbo”. UNTIL Bob and Brian Weber volunteered to take on
these important tasks for the time-being.
See, we knew it. Just because they’re

“It’s Lou, in the sunrise… It’s Lou, etc…”
“You’re nobody till somebody sues you…”

Spencer hired to lead
Society music programs
Rick Spencer has accepted the position of Director of Music
and Education for the Barbershop Harmony Society.
"Every current and future member of this organization should
be given the opportunity to experience barbershop harmony
the way he wants it," said Spencer. ”I'm looking forward to
leading a team of staff and volunteers in expanding and
developing educational programs to enrich the experience of
all Barbershoppers.
"These are exciting times for the Barbershop Harmony
Society. Our Youth In Harmony and Collegiate Development
programs continue to grow due to the efforts of the music
staff and the countless volunteers involved each year. We are
developing programs to build on this groundwork, to work
more closely with other a cappella and music organizations to
get more young people singing and enjoying the experience
that a cappella music offers.
"When you get right down to it, it’s all about experiencing the
music together, with people who enjoy singing this music as
much as you do. That's the very heart of the traditions and
fraternal aspects of the Barbershop Harmony Society, core
values lived deeply by heroes I follow: Joe Liles, Mel Knight,
Greg Lyne. "
A 17-year member of the Society, Rick started barbershopping
at the age of ten, has directed choruses, coached, sung in
international-caliber quartets, and taught throughout North
America and Europe.
Prior to his appointment, Spencer traveled extensively in the
United States, Canada, and abroad for the Society as a music
educator, specializing in youth development programs. He
regularly conducted clinics for high school and university music
programs. His presentations included an emphasis on the
stylistic characteristics of barbershop harmony, tuning, and
how singing barbershop can have a positive effect in other
genres of vocal music.
In his new role, Spencer will direct the operation of all music
education programs and activities that will promote the
preservation, education, and growth of barbershop singing;
oversee the Old Songs Library; operate the annual Harmony
University; and manage the music recording, licensing, and
publishing activities for the Society.
"Rick Spencer is a fine musician, vocalist, arranger, teacher
and extremely well organized, said Joe Liles, a past Executive
Director who has served as the Interim Director of Music
Education the past eight months. "He is in touch with youth
and has great vision for the future of the Society.
He has
already proven himself to be a good manager. I'm looking
forward to working with him in his new capacity."
Spencer earned a bachelor of arts degree in music and a
bachelor of science degree in music education from the
University of Connecticut. Prior to his time with the Society,
Spencer was a sixth-grade general music and chorus teacher
in Connecticut.
Spencer and his wife, Melissa, reside in Kenosha, Wisconsin,
with their baby girl, Caitlyn.

Humor -
Don’t know about you…
but this seems like bad
parenting to me!
The Tampa HERALD
There was an article in a recent Sunday
edition of the New York Times entitled
"Looking for Laughs in this World."
It was written because of a new
Albert Brooks movie called, "Looking
for Comedy in the Muslim World."
The article provided examples of
jokes and humorous stories from
different countries.
Here’s one’s from Russia:
Two men meet on the street and one
them asks the other,
“Is it true that you formed a musical
group?”
"Yes, a quartet."
“How many in the group?”
"Three."
“Who’s in it?”
"Me and my brother."
“You have a brother?”
http://www.cafepress.com/
"No."

Singing Valentines another grand success!
Another February 14th has come and gone with lots of the
Heralds sacrificing a day of work to deliver love and happiness
to unsuspecting victims!
Over and over again, this year’s recipients raved over the songs
and lovely surprise sent by their loved one. And over and over
again, this year’s quartet-ers raved over what a blast it is to
give such wonderful happiness away while doing what we all
love so much… singing barbershop. Thanks to all who helped
make this year’s project a smashing success!

Heralds Respond to Sunshine District
Request
The Heralds of Harmony have sent $1,500 to the Sunshine
District to help pay for Harmony Explosion Camp promotional
materials that were mailed to 385 vocal music educators in the
state this month. The money also will enable 15 male high
school students to attend the popular weekend summer camp,
free of charge.
The Heralds and three other chapters -- Miami, Sarasota and
Key West -- responded to the district's request for early
support according to a letter from Bill Bernard, camp director.
The camp will be held June 15-18 at the University of Central
Florida in Orlando. Key instructors will be Dr. Ben Ayling,
chorus music educator at Kent State University and bass of the
1991 international quartet champions, the Ritz; and Rick
Spencer, the Barbershop Harmony Society's newly-named
Director of Music and Education. HotShots will, once again,
serve as the camp's demonstration quartet.

Some of you heard that, in the recent heavy rains in Pinellas County, HoH member
BRYAN HEVEL had serious flooding and damage to his home. He sent us this update:
“My house still looks it was hit by a tornado. I'm putting down tile in place of most
of the carpet. However, you can't just replace the floor without painting, and fixing
any broke stuff. Also, replacing the kitchen. It's a lot of work, and unfortunately I
still have to go to my job. I'll be back in a few weeks, as my stress level
decreases. Tell everyone hello, and save a spot on the risers for me.
Thanks, Bryan”

This may come as a surprise to you if
you’ve never lived in Las Vegas, but there
are more Catholic churches there than
there are casinos.
Not surprisingly, many times worshippers
at the Sunday services will give casino
chips rather than cash when the offering
baskets are passed.
Since chips from many different casinos
are received in the offerings, the
churches have devised a method to convert
them into usable contributions. The
churches send all their collected chips to
a nearby Franciscan Monastery to be
sorted, and then the chips are taken to
the casinos of origin to be cashed in.
Of course, this is done by a
chip monk.
