SOME HERALDS’
OFFER THEIR OWN CHRISTMAS
STORIES One event I will always remember involved the Heralds of
Harmony singing Sweet Little Jesus Boy on the Christmas
Show. You will recall the emotion experienced by our
Director Tony DeRosa. While directing this number the tears
started to flow. By the end of the number there wasn't a dry
eye in the chorus and their were few dry eyes in the
audience. What a wonderful emotional experience; one I'll
never forget and will always cherish.
- Bruce Yeager
After my first wife divorced me, I had regular visitation with
my six year old daughter. My ex started seeing a guy who
was very possessive, and didn't like me. I had an argument
with him, the day after Christmas 1982, over a personal
mater, and the next time I called to see my girl, my ex-wife
told me I would get hurt if I came around, and since I was
not paying my support regularly, I could do nothing legally.
A year had passed, still struggling financially, and I was
down to communicating only with my daughter's uncle.
Christmas was only a couple days away, and the uncle said
he would talk to my ex-wife's now husband about letting me
see my daughter, now seven, and told me about the
restaurant where he worked.
Well, I got ahead of myself, and went out and spent half of
my paycheck on gifts. It was Christmas eve, and I convinced
myself that a whole year, and the holiday season would
soften his rage toward me, especially if he saw all the gift
wrapped boxes I was bringing. I went to his restaurant, and
asked to see him.
I realized, I couldn't have been more wrong, as he came out
of the kitchen, saw me, and began punching his fist in his
hand, glaring at me as if the argument had happened only
this morning. "No way" was all he would say as his hand met
fist again, and again, throughout the meeting.
Finally as I gave up, I set down the large bag full of presents
I had brought, I said "I have no use for these. Do what you
want with them," and I left.
Walking two miles in a stupor, I got home to see my
roommate. He saw my anguish, and asked, “What's the
matter?” As I started to tell the tale I had minutes ago
experienced, I was unable to hold back the tears running
down my face, which turned quickly into open sobbing. I was
inconsolably heartbroken.
Though two more Christmas's would pass before I would be
allowed to visit my girl, as finally they too had divorced, that
one season in 1983 will always be among the very saddest
memories of my life.

ONE MORE HERALD SHARES
A CHRISTMAS STORY We lived in Chicago on the second floor: It was Christmas
Eve 1932. My sister was 9. I was 7. Till then our family
has always had a Christmas tree, but we were in the
midst of the depression. Dad lost his job in 1930. He was
a photoengraver, and people were not advertising.
However, dad has always provided for the family. He had
a wide knowledge of antiques, so he'd buy low and sell
high.
As my sister and I sat at the living room window watching
the snow glitter as it fell in front of the headlights of
passing cars. We suddenly hear music being played. It
was coming from a big Wonder Bread truck. The trailer
had glass sides to display a large, lighted Nativity Sean
which could be viewed from both sides. The carol playing
was Silent Knight. My sister and I along with mom cried
as the music faded into the distance, because this
Christmas we would not have a decorated tree. There
were very few trees available because of the hard times.
However, to our joy on Christmas morning we woke up to
see a beautiful tree in the living room, with stockings
pinned to the stuffed chair next to the tree (we didn't
have a fireplace). The stockings were filled with nuts,
Christmas candy, an orange and an apple.
You see, while dad was out that night hunting for the
very scarce commodity, he decided to visited a friend
with whom he did business. Asked why he was out so
late, dad told him he looked all over town for a tree, with
no luck. His friend said "you are in luck Steve, I have two
trees. One was given to me by a friend after I bought
one". Dad did not drive, but happily carried the tree
home on the streetcar, and was willing to spring for the
seven cent car fare.
We later learned dad was offered as much as $10.00 for
the tree from several passengers on the street car. It was
very tempting. Trees that year were selling for about a
dollar or two, but Daddy said “no thanks. This one is for
my kids”.
And that is our most memorable Christmas. Thanks DAD!
- Ralph Mielcarek
Did you meet the visitor on Tuesday night? He
claimed to be a friend of Bob Morrissey.
(Doesn’t seem possible does it?)
Glad GEORGE BURGER was with us, all the way
from Manchester, Connecticut.

The Tampa HERALD
One of the most personally satisfying and re
warding tasks we have is singing Valentines to
unsuspecting gals, (and a couple guys) all day on
Valentines Day. Seeing the look of envy on the
co-workers faces lets you know that it is a
gift that really hits the mark.
Please let me know if you are going to be able to sing in the
Valentines this Feb 14th, it is a Tuesday so you would have
to schedule a day off work. (Those of you actually gainfully
employed) I will have a sign up sheet at the rehearsals from
here out, and will be matching up those who don't match
themselves first!
Grab three other guys and make your own quartet, early
signers get the best match ups.
Songs are "Heart of My Heart" and "Let Me Call You
Sweetheart" and are on the HoH website.
Cost is $50 and includes a valentine card with personal
sentiment, a silk rose, and a Polaroid photo or two of the
occasion. Usually a quartet will do 10 to 15 gigs in a day, so
it's usually 6 or 8 before lunch, 6 or 8 after lunch, bring a
spare shirt so you don't spill bar-b-Q on your tux shirt.
Hand out sheets for advertising and to give to your own
acquaintances are forthcoming. If you are going to write me
and put your name up please add the part(s) you sing and if
possible if you are free in the AM, Afternoon, Evening, or if
there are specific hours you can not sing in, and your
address, it's nice to get 4 Pinellas guys together, four Citrus
Park guys, four
Lutzers... saves time getting together in the AM.
It's early yet, but many of you probably could get a few reps
in after the shows. If you are completely unable to sing but
could spend the day fielding phone calls and live in
Hillsboro, let me know, our regular Tampa guy moved to
Georgia this year.

CHRISTMAS SHOW VITAL STATISTICS
•
Chorus Call will 10:00 a.m. We are to
meet in the rehearsal hall (mirrored
room) and not on the stage. Pat will
warm us up till the technical crew is
ready for a sound check of the chorus.
•
Nick will need some help in setting up
the trees and the decorations for the
front of the stage. He will need
volunteers at TBPAC no later that 8:30
a.m. so that this can be done as soon
as possible.
•
The attire for the first half will be
Holiday Festive. Outfits should be in
bright colors, no jeans or sneakers,
portraying a group gathered for a
party.
Since the setting will be an
indoor scene, the garb does not have
to be hot or heavy outdoor type
clothing.
•
There will be a DRESS REHEARSAL
with the first-half show attire on
Tuesday, December 6th. EVERYONE
who is singing in the first half of the
Christmas show MUST attend this final
rehearsal, dressed in the colorful,
casual garb they plan to wear in
performance. This is for inspection
purposes to ensure that everything is
appropriate. If you are unable to
attend this final rehearsal for any
reason, please contact Pat Bauer or
Nick Schwob.
The Box Office phone number is 813 229 7827.
Thanks for selling the show!

The Tampa HERALD
Now this is the kind of festive,
holiday garb we’re talkin’ about!
It’s only about ten weeks until that wonderful holiday called VALENTINES DAY!
And, you know what that means! We get to inflict some loving, barbershop terrorism
upon some unsuspecting loved ones with our Singing Valentine attacks.
Once again, the amazing Bryan Kleske is building the strategic strike force that will
be delivering the musical love-bombs throughout the day on February 14, 2006.
So, please be making your plans to sing in one of our romantic SWAT teams.
Bryan will be forming quartets from all who volunteer. You can contact him for more information
or to be recruited for this mission.
Take our word for it, you’ll never have a more enjoyable time
singing for others - and you’ll be helping HoH in a much needed fund-drive.
