The Beacon VOL. LXXXXIX NO. 3 THE MISSISSIPPII CONFERENCE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN AUGUST 2015 Call to the Twenty-Seventh Annual Meeting Reaching Out Across the Street or Around the World So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. -Galatians 6:9 United Methodist Women of the Mississippi Conference are called to gather Friday, October 2, at 7:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Louisville, Mississippi, for a service of praise and worship. The Starkville District is hosting this year’s annual meeting, and it promises to be a beautiful and memorable event. Following Friday’s worship service, we will reconvene at Lake Tiak-O’Khata, located just a few minutes from the church, for special group activities including a session for women 40 and under led by Courtney Layson of Jackson titled “Our Identity As Young Women in the Church.” A session about establishing an on-line circle will be led by UMW web master Cheryl Farr, and Mary Simpson will lead us as we plan the 150th anniversary of Methodist Women. Last year’s UMW choir was amazing, and Ginger Grissom has agreed to lead the choir again for Friday evening’s worship. Lake Tiak-O’Khata has given us a deadline of August 1 to reserve rooms for our meeting. If you haven’t reserved your room, PLEASE CALL TODAY 662-773-7853. The verse in Galatians, “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right,” reminds United Methodist Women that there is always work to do, whether it be across the street or around the world. The fund was set up in 1978 by Mr. E.V. Perry to honor his late wife, Mrs. Frances Perry of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, a past president of the former Mississippi Conference. It was originally set up for women going into the mission field of the Methodist Church. The program has evolved through the years with donations from United Methodist Women across the state. Scholarships up to $1,500 are now available for women and men in the junior, senior and graduate years of college who are interested in working in projects or institutions of the United Methodist Church. It is renewable for three additional years if a grade point average of 3.0 is maintained at an approved institution. The chairperson and members of the Frances Perry Scholarship Committee are appointed by the UMW Conference President. The United Methodist Women of Mississippi are asked to donate at least $4 per member to keep the scholarship program going beyond the original amount donated. The disbursement for this year is $13,500 in this 37th year of the scholarship. UMW groups are encouraged to bring $10 Walmart gift cards to help further this important ministry to students. Last year our gifts raised more than $2,000 for Gulf Coast students! Receptacles for the gift cards will be located at the registration desk 8 Securing the UMW Legacy from Mississippi United Methodist Women! Just a few short years from now we will celebrate our 150th anniversary. The first women’s missionary society was formed in 1869, and this is an opportunity for United Methodist Women to celebrate, marvel at what has been accomplished, and to make new commitments for the work ahead. Join me after the worship service at our 2015 Annual Meeting to learn more about ways we plan to celebrate this 150th anniversary. Our predecessors established a strong, vital mission organization and left that legacy for us. During the 150th anniversary era, our challenge is to leave our legacy for this organization we love and the United Methodist Women who come after us. We want to make sure that the direct service, advocacy, education and leadership development of our first 150 years continue for the next 150. The Legacy Fund is a permanent endowment to undergird future generations of United Methodist Women as they serve the women, children and youth of their day. The Legacy Fund’s income will insure a regular source of support for the core expenses of mission. It will provide for administration of UMW grants, scholarships, mission personnel, membership nurture, leadership development and updates of data and communications of United Methodist Women to raise Mission Giving dollars that will connect more directly with women, children and youth. Throughout the five-year celebration, every United Methodist Woman is invited to contribute to The Legacy Fund. While any amount is welcome, members are asked to consider commemorating the year we first organized for mission with gifts in increments of 1869 -- $18.69, 186.90, 1,869.00, etc., or honoring United Methodist Women’s years of service with gifts in increments of 150 _ $15, 150, 1,500. Members are also invited to name the Legacy Fund in their will or as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or pension. Each district is encouraged to start a scrap book committee. Hopefully, at the 2016 Annual Meeting we will have a hands-on project, where scrap books will be shared. By 2017 we hope to complete the scrap books and start preparations for a video scrap book to be finalized by 2019. Please share this letter with your local organizations and invite them to start selecting a member to be part of the District Scrap Book Committee. Let’s get the excitement started! We will show how United Methodist Women from Mississippi turn Faith, Hope and Love into action. See you soon! 150th Anniversary/Legacy Fund Committee: Mary Simpson, Chairperson Barbara Adams Kay Barksdale Betty Jane Chatham Sarah Sanders 9 Mission u 2015 Start with a group of happy women and add great leadership, a schedule filled with lots of activities, good food, meaningful worship, extraordinary study leaders, interesting subject matter, beautiful music, hot weather, cool classrooms, PINK tee shirts, golf cart transportation, new and renewed friendships, and you will have a glimpse of the 2015 Mission u. Add to all this a visit from 12 of our Hispanic friends who held a Bible study on Saturday, and you have the makings of a successful school to prepare leaders for our UMW studies. 10 Arlean Hall Retreat Center, Inc. 2015 Mission Grants Awarded The mission grants are available to Mississippi United Methodist Churches and agencies.
