DETROIT,- Southwest Solutions’ annual fundraising event, called “Solutions at Sunrise,” drew more than 750 people and rave reviews from the attendees. The breakfast event, now in its fourth year, took place on Wednesday, October 14 at the Ford Conference in Dearborn. The program was themed “Building Community / Inspiring Change.” It featured testimonials from individuals whose lives have been changed by Southwest Solutions, two short films, and speeches by leaders of the organization. “We at Southwest have always been led by vision,” said John Van Camp, president of Southwest Solutions, at the event. “We see the vision of a vibrant community in southwest Detroit, where an entrepreneurial spirit is taking root and bringing new businesses, jobs and ideas.” More information on page 10 Consagrados premios ‘Foreclosures’ BAJARON EN SEPTIEMBRE DEPORTES MTV Latinos como festividad musical Pág. 10 Memo Ochoa YA PIENSA EN EL CLÁSICO Más información en página 16 “The Most Widely Read and Circulated Hispanic Newspaper in Michigan” 10 EVENTO LATINO PRESS® DETROIT; OCTUBRE 22, 2009 6301 Michigan Ave. Detroit, MI 48210 Ph. 313-361-3000 www.latinodetroit.com From Cover... SOUTHWEST SOLUTIONS FUNDRAISER A udience response to the event was universally positive. “It was very impressive, inspiring and motivational,” said Alice Thompson, who attended the event for the first time. “Southwest Solutions is doing the John Van Camp, president of Southwest Solutions, and his wife Penny Bailer. kind of work that truly builds communities.” Testimonials about the effectiveness of Southwest’s programs were given by Bryan Goodman, Mariana Orozco and Shirley Cockrel. Mariana spoke about how the family literacy program has enabled her to learn English and help her children with their schoolwork. “If my children are going to succeed, I have to help them and encourage them to study and work hard,” Mariana said. “Southwest Solutions has given me the tools I need to help my children.” The fundraising event included a new short film about the organization called “Don’t Give Up.” The film received a very emotional reaction from the audience. One of the stories in the film documented a sad and difficult immigration situation faced by a Mexican family in the family literacy program. The film can be seen by clicking the link on the “Solutions at Sunrise” website page: www.swsol.org/annual.php. The film is also posted on the Southwest Solutions Facebook page. “Solutions at Sunrise” is built around Table Captains who recruit friends, family and colleagues to join them at a table of ten.
