Welcome to Ursuline Athletics!
Discover the power within U! Paw Pride March 2015 Welcome to Ursuline Athletics! Dear Student-Athletes and Parents, Check out www.metrowaa.org for complete schedules of all of our teams. Okay, so anyone who has been in my office or spent any length of time with me knows I am a huge “follower” of Pat Summit. If you don’t know who she is, please go google her now. I was trying to find my inspiration for this month’s article when I stumbled across the above picture and quote. I love the idea that I/we don’t have to be the strongest or most gifted person to be successful (win). We just have to be the most competitive. I decided then to research what “competitive” means. Here is what I learned; the word “compete” comes from the Latin words “com” and “petere” which mean “together” and “seeking” respectively. WOW! How about that for an “aha moment”? If we as teams and teammates can put aside the idea that personally we have to be the strongest, most gifted, most talented person on our teams and focus more on being the most competitive-well, just imagine where that could take us. Working together with respect is an amazing concept. It takes out all of the jealousy, the selfishness, the frustration while concentrating on working together with respect gives us support, happiness and love. If you had to choose what teammate you want to play with or even be, I hope you choose to be the most competitive, the teammate who works with your teammates and not against. Be the one who supports your teammates when they play more or less than you. Be the one who supports your teammates when they score a goal, point, basket, etc. Be the one who lifts others up, every minute of every day, no matter what, because that is what a competitor does, that is what a real teammate does. As we enter the “second half” of the Lenten season, perhaps now is a good time to either continue being that great competitor, and, if that is not quite you right now, well, it is not too late to start. This is good, Jen Brooks CMAA Save the date! UA Golf Classic May 4, 2015 Sunset Country Club Proceeds benefit the UA athletic department. Unfortunately the weather hasn’t been helping much; we’ve had to practice indoors for the first few weeks, but we’re not letting it slow us down. With our first game on March 25, we still have a lot more work to do, but I have no doubt we’ll have a strong and successful season. Coach Diehl Maggie Ederle—Racquetball Basketball Varsity Senior night was cancelled this year due to weather. The team had a small gathering at Dewey’s to honor senior Julia Dueker. Julia will be recognized during awards night on March 25. The Bears traveled to Kansas City to play St. Teresa and Notre Dame de Sion during Valetine’s day weekend. The Bears defeated St. Teresa’s 36-33. The inside game was the key factor in this game as Megan Hudwalker and Nikki Soell combined for 18 points and 17 boards. The team shot 68% from the line. The Notre Dame Storm defeated the Bears 57-51. The Storm shot 78% from the field during the first quarter, scoring 25 points. Their coach said, “This was best shooting game this year!”. The Bears came roaring back in the second half, out-scoring the Storm 25-15, but it wasn’t enough. The leading scorers were Madyson Mossman 12 points and Hudwalker 11 points. Nerinx didn’t have a chance this year! The Bears took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back. It was the inside out game for the Bears. Soell and Hudwalker took care of the paint. Nikki had 19 points and 13 rebounds while Megan scored nine points, ten boards. Mossman and Nora Brooks handled the rest. Madyson had 18 points while Nora scored eight. The final score was 65-58. The team was seeded second in Districts. Their first game was against Summit. The Bears won 59-31. Eight players scored with Caroline Bender leading the way. She had 15 points. Brooks scored 14 points while Kimberlee Sewester lead the team in rebounding with eight. The Bears shot 39% from the field. In the championship game the Bears played the Kirkwood Pioneers. The Pioneers started the game on fire. They had an 11point lead in the first quarter as they shot 59% from the field. During the second quarter, the Bears went on a run to close the lead. But the Pioneers started the third quarter with an 8-2 run. The Bears could never make up the deficit. The final score was Ursuline 39 and Kirkwood 54. The Bears had eight players in the scoring column. Soell was the leading scorer with ten points. Hudwalker had eight boards. The awards night is March 25 at 7:00 p.m. in Cafe. The MWAA All-Conference team will be selected at the MWAA basketball coaches’ meeting after the MSHSAA State Tournament. Coach Hannig and Coach Jones Junior Varsity The jv basketball team wrapped up a great season with an overall record of 16-9. It was an exciting season, full of individual and team achievements. Our season started with the St. Charles West Tournament. We defeated Francis Howell North and Cor Jesu in the first two games and then went on to beat Timberland to take first place in the tournament. Entering into Christmas break, we set a goal to play in the championship game in the Incarnate Word/Cor Jesu Tournament. We won the first game against Fort Zumwalt West 49-43 and the second game against Nerinx 44-30. However, we struggled in our next two games, losing hard-fought games to Incarnate Word and Kirkwood. The jv Bears put up a good fight, earning fourth place in the 16-team tournament. The jv team defeated several teams and conference opponents in the second half of the season. They beat Cor Jesu 38-32 and Nerinx 36-24. Additionally, they got the chance to play Incarnate Word a second time. However, this time, the jv Bears came out on top, winning 49-45. They also defeated St. Charles 47-44 in one of the most exciting games of the season. The jv won on a shot with five seconds left on the clock after being down by 11 points in the fourth quarter. During the middle of February, the freshman, jv and varsity squads all traveled to Kansas City for two games. In the first game, the jv defeated St. Teresa’s Academy 51-49. They once again won in dramatic fashion. Sam Abel stole the ball and got it to Katie Polizzi who scored the winning basket with three seconds left on the clock. Leading scorers were Jamie Elder with 13 points, Cori Sorensen with 12 points and Elly Butler with ten points. Unfortunately, the jv lost a close second game to Notre Dame de Sion 45-41. Elly Butler was the leading scorer with 14 points, and Jamie Elder had ten points. I had the pleasure of working with these young ladies every day over the past four months. I watched them grow as a team and bond as friends. Great job on an amazing season, ladies! Coach Kim DeCarli Track This year the track and field team looks to improve upon its previous season, one in which several school records were broken. Things have already gotten off on the right foot. The team almost doubled in size, adding quite a few new members to complement the older members returning with experience and skill. Most team members have played other sports at Ursuline or were training over the cold winter months. The season opener is March 21 at Washington University; it should be a great meet. Make sure you check the calendar page on the team's website to find out about meet location and times when you decide to come and cheer for the tracksters! Coach Samson Coach Mary Salerno sits with the cheerleading team. Congratulations to the following members of the 2015 Ursuline Academy track team: Haley Baker Kate Bellon Lauren Bray Lilly Brumfield Brigid Chura Grace Distler Cat Dulle Alexandra Eaton Colleen Flynn Allison Golomski Tierra Griffin Madalyn Hall Emma Ingrassia Emma Ingrassia Lily Kohlberg Madison Lodholz Hannah Rowland Claire Schulte Kimberlee Sewester Melissa Simpson Barbara Sorenson Corynne Sorenson Ginny Sperkowski Jill Stinehart Jess Summers Bailey Trout Claudia Wingbermuehle Coach Kris Pelizzaro hangs out with the cheer team. Cheerleading The Ursuline cheerleading team thanks our honorary coaches, Coach Kris Pelizarro (whom I taught basketball in grade school) and Coach Mary Salerno (who was a former St. Joe’s cheerleader, but we won’t hold that against her.) The honorary coaches had a great time and learned how demanding the skill techniques need to be in this sport. We hope they join us again for future games. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Market Street takes place March 14. The team is number 90 in the parade. It is an honor to march in this parade since multiple cheer, dance and pom groups apply to participate and only a few are chosen. The cheerleading squad has the honor of representing Ursuline Academy. We are busy learning four pom routines to perform to music as we march. Please come cheer us as we march in the parade and cheer loudly for Ursuline Academy. Our banquet will be March 25 at 6:30 p.m. and we will say farewell to our two senior co-captains Abby Ohlendorf and Alexis Johnson. These two athletes have been on the cheerleading team all four years of high school. We wish them well in their future. Abby Ohlendorf will be attending Missouri State University in Springfield and Alexis Johnson will be at- tending Rockhurst University in Kansas City. Cheerleading will hold a prospective cheercClinic for those interested in the sport on March 24 from 5-7 pm.. in the gym. Tryouts for the cheer team will be March 30, 31 and April 1 from 5:30-7:30. The first two days you will learn the basics of cheerleading, a cheer, two chants and a 5-8 count dance. Selections will take place on April 1. A parent/team meeting will take place on April 14 at 6:30 to review the rules, costs and commitment to the sport. This meeting is mandatory for a parent and the team members. Our first practice and uniform fittings will take place on April 16 from 3:30-6:00 p.m. Coach Sandy Yanko Assistant Coaches Allie Renz and Justin Barton Golf I trust everyone reading this update is happy to see the change in the weather and may have even experienced a slight wait on the first tee this past Saturday and Sunday!! This past week was an exciting time for the area golf coaches as we got together to schedule our matches and tournaments for next fall. Westborough Country Club has been kind enough to allow us to host our home matches once again, which is not only a treat because of its excellent test of golf, but you can’t beat the convenience of the course located down the hill from Ursuline! We are hoping that this year it will provide more of a “home course” advantage as last year our girls were learning how to play the course along with our opponents! That theory will be tested right away as we start the season with a home match against rival St. Joseph Academy on August 25. Be sure to check out our golf website for the rest of the fall schedule. We also hope to see many of you at the Ursuline Annual Golf Tournament at Sunset Hills Country Club on May 4. We hope to have a few of our varsity players strategically placed on the golf course, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the end of another excellent year at Ursuline while looking forward to the fall sports season and, in particular, UA golf!! For the high-school golfers reading this, I have put below the link to just three junior golf programs that you can plug into this spring and summer. The accelerated golf tour is a series of two-day tournaments; there is also the Gateway Jr. PGA program’s website address which offers many one-to-two day tournament options, and, finally, the AJGA, which is more geared to the upper level varsity player. We are coming to a close with a BUFF BEARS WINTER WARRIORS session this month! It has been a great eight weeks, and everyone has worked very hard! This session’s workouts were the toughest yet! After spring break we will be starting a BUFF BEARS SPRING SOLDIERS session, taking us through the end of the school year. Things will run a little different this time with no "Buffest Bear" but just a fun, group-training atmosphere with a total of 20 sessions being offered. Participants will be able to do a "pay as you go" method or purchase a new punchcard! There will be several new faces joining the SPRING SOLDIERS, and more are signing up each day! Looking forward to the new face of Buff Bears and a fresh start, we head into spring! Don't forget to sign up for Strength and Conditioning Camp this summer! Camp is June 22-25 from 6-8 p.m. All current athletes are strongly encouraged to attend as this is a great way to stay in shape for summer...especially those who play a fall sport! Camp is open to nonathletes as well, grades 6-12! Looking forward to a great week! Hope to see you on the links soon! Coach Bridget Gilbert http://www.acceleratedgolftour.org/ http://www.gatewaypga.org/jrgolf/ http://ajga.org/Schedule/index.asp?year=2015 "It's not about having time. It's about making time." Andrea Hood, B.S., Nutrition & Exercise Physiology/CPT Strength & Conditioning Coach The dance team completed the season strong, placing third in the Division 4 Mix category of the MODTA State competition held February 28 at the Family Arena in St. Charles. The day was a great culmination to an outstanding season. This dedicated and hardworking group of girls spent numerous hours practicing and perfecting the routines for state and did a fantastic job! Congratulations to all of you! In addition to their third place, Ursuline had ten dancers named to the All-Academic Team, including senior Megan Barks, juniors Caroline Adams, Anna Caleca, Katherine Cassani, Mia Randazzo, and sophomores Molly Herdlick, Maeve Intagliata, Grace Johnston, Sarah Lampe and Ana Zevan. This is a great achievement for the team! The dance team awards evening was held on March 5, and the following dancers were recognized for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments this year. Superlatives were presented to the following dancers: Dance Best Smile: Sarah Lampe Most Flexible: Grace Johnston Best Technique: Katherine Cassani Best Showmanship: Anna Caleca Most Dedicated: Cassandra Keller Most Inspirational: Caroline Adams All-Academic team minus Ana Zevan and Mia Randazzo. Traditional team awards were presented to the following dancers: Most Improved Dancer: Sarah Gravette Rookie of the Year: Carly Hoffman 110% Award: Ana Zevan MVP (Most Valuable Performer): Megan Barks Congratulations to the team for a great year! Tryouts for the 2015-16 season are scheduled for April 20, 21 and 22 from 4:00 - 5:30. Hope to see everyone there! Go, Bears!
