Wahama football looking for continued success

MASON, W.Va. — It’s about

The Wahama football program
has reached the WVSSAC postseason 19 times on the gridiron,
which includes six straight
appearances in the Class A field
since 2009.
With 22 varsity returnees,

“As we told the kids earlier
this year, you can’t be 10-0 and
if you aren’t 1-0. We really just
want to focus on Ravenswood
right now and we’ll deal with
the rest when we need to,” Barr
said. “We really want the kids to
focus on what is right in front of
us each day so that they can get
better each day. As that builds
toward game night, hopefully it
will lead to a better overall performance.”
Wahama has a 32-man roster
this fall, which includes seven
starters on offense and four
starters on defense. The Red
and White also have a trio of
all-league and all-state selections
to lead the way in seniors Jared
Nutter, Jesse Hesson and Billy
Joe McDermitt.
Nearly three-quarters of this
varsity team has played in a postseason game, and a handful of
seniors are linked to significant
minutes during the state championship season of 2012.
Barr believes that the experience and leadership will go a
long way for the White Falcons
this year, as long the players
continue to work for what they
want.
“I know there are stories out
there about how much of a regular we are in the postseason, and
truthfully our program has come
to kind of expect it. Honestly,
this group isn’t any different
than any of the others. They
expect success,” Barr said. “The
focus for us this season is really
taking it one game at a time.
The kids have worked really
hard and shown good effort, but
we have to keep getting better
every single day this year.”
Wahama did lose half of its
starting 22 to graduation, so
some newcomers and reserves
will be asked to take on significantly increased roles this fall.
Barr, however, is hoping that his
veterans will allow the new guys
to progress at a quicker rate. He
also notes that the older guys are
prepared to serve as the needed
leaders on the field.
“These kids, especially these
seniors, have been there before,
so they know what it takes to be
successful,” Barr said. “I think
these upperclassmen are pretty
aware of what has to happen
for us to be successful this year.
We’re all excited to get this season started.”
The White Falcons will play
four of their first six games at
home and also has a bye during
Week 10.
Wahama opens its 2015 campaign on Friday, Aug. 28, when
it hosts Ravenswood in a nonconference matchup at Bachtel
Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

After improving its win total

MERCERVILLE, Ohio — It’s
not about the size of the dog in
the fight. It’s about the size of
the fight in the dog.
After posting marks of 5-5
overall and 4-4 in the Tri-Valley
Conference Hocking Division
last fall, the South Gallia football
team is looking to get back to
its more traditional ways on the
gridiron — with a postseason
appearance being one of the primary goals.
The Rebels are blessed with
a dozen seniors and 15 varsity returnees from a year ago,
including several starters at all of
the key positions on both sides
of the field. The main concern,
however, comes down to having
only 27 players on the 2015 roster, which might factor in over
the course of three months of
football.
In all, sixth-year SGHS coach
Jason Peck has seen the maturation process from a group of
seniors that has three years of
varsity experience together. That
experience should factor into the
Rebels’ plan nicely this fall, and
according to Peck, has already
filtered into the program this
preseason.
“Everything has just been
quicker, rather it be getting lined
up in formations or getting organized in the weight room. These
kids, because of their experience,
have really taken responsibility
upon themselves to be leaders
and have good work ethic,” Peck
said. “We don’t have a whole lot
of kids on the roster, but we are
senior-oriented and we are hungry for the upcoming season. So
far, things have gone really well.
Hopefully that will continue.”
The Rebels have three playoff
appearances in school history,
with the last one coming back in
2011 — Peck’s second season in
charge of the program.
SGHS has been in the playoff
hunt headed into the final week
of the last two seasons, but each
time the Red and Gold was ultimately bitten by previous losses
from that year.
If the Rebels hope to add a
fourth postseason berth to the
program’s history, then they
must first start with defending
their home turf — as SGHS is
just 6-5 overall at Rebel Field
since the 2013 campaign.
Peck believes that some of
those missed opportunities over
the years has managed to light
a fire in this group, which he
thinks will be beneficial to the
success of this team as the year
progresses.
“These guys have been in
that hunt the last two years and
really want to get back to where
other teams in this program have
been,” Peck said. “We can get
there if we work hard and can
stay healthy, but we have to be
able to finish things where we
haven’t in the past.”
SGHS opens the home season
with Fed Hock in Week 2 and
also hosts Manchester in a Week
4 tilt. The key home games this
fall are at the midway point
and beyond when the Rebels
welcome Eastern (Week 5),
Wahama (Week 8) and Southern
(Week 9).
The Red and Gold also have
tough league matchups with
Trimble, Belpre, Waterford and
Miller on the road this fall.
The Rebels open the season on
Friday, Aug. 28, when they travel
to Sciotoville East for a nonconference game at 7:30 p.m.

Blue Angels set for more success in 2015

Lady Marauders look to follow historic season

ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio
— After reaching the
district final for the first
time since 1990 last season, the Meigs Volleyball
team will try to follow up
strong in 2015.
The Lady Marauders
return just four varsity
members from 2014 ,
they are juniors Devyn
Oliver, Morgan Lodwick,
Alliyah Pullins and Jordan
Roush. Oliver, the MHS
starting setter, earned
All-TVC Ohio first team
honors last season. Roush
will also look to step up
for Meigs as returning
libero from last season.
“We are a very young
team with no seniors,four
juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen so each and every-
one of the girls will play
a key part for our team,”
third year coach Lori
Carter said. “Even though
we are a young team,
these girls are focused
and determined to do the
best and improve on all
aspects of the game of
volleyball. This preseason
they have worked so very
hard and have impressed
me everyday.”
Meigs graduated five
seniors off of the 2014
squad, which finished
16-9 overall and 6-6 in
the TVC Ohio. Among
players lost to graduation
are Lindsay Patterson,
Hannah Cremeans, Ariel
Ellis, Kelsey Hudson and
All-TVC Ohio first team
selection Brook Andrus.
Amanda Cole, who led
the Maroon and Gold in
points and kills in the district final as a sophomore,
will also be missed by the
2015 Lady Marauders, as
she transferred to Southern over the offseason.
The 2014 Lady
Marauders doubled their
win total from the 2013
season and knocked off
both Crooksville and
Northwest in the postseason.
Meigs has won eight
volleyball league titles
and will look for its first
league crown since 2002,
which was the third in a
row. In order to claim the
TVC Ohio championship,
Meigs will have to fend
off two-time defending
champion Athens. The
Maroon and Gold will
host Athens on September 22 and travel to The
Plains on October 15.

Lady Knights volleyball look to continue growth

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. —
Last fall was a benchmark year
for the Point Pleasant volleyball
team.
The Lady Knights ended the
season with 17 wins, which was
the most wins in the program’s
eight-year history. The Red and
Black also secured its first postseason win ever in a match-up
against Nitro. First year head
coach Marla Cottrill is excited to
see how her squad will continue
to improve this year.
“We have a lot of experienced
players returning, plus there are
some newcomers that we are
very excited about,” Cottrill said.
We’re excited to see this thing
develop and hopefully we’ll play
as a team. If so, I think we can
put together a good season.”
PPHS will have six players
returning from the 2014 team,
including seniors Rebecca Musgrave and Charli Leach, after
only losing three players to graduation. Other returnees include
junior Michaela Cottrill and
sophomores Cierra Porter, Gracie
Cottrill and Leah Cochran.
There will be 15 new members
of the Lady Knights in 2015.

With a successful 2014, Cottrill said she hopes the upcoming
campaign will bring more attention to the Lady Blacks volleyball
team.
“We’re hoping to continue to
grow the program,” Cottrill said.
“This will be the eighth year of
volleyball at Point Pleasant. It
hasn’t been easy growing the
program, but the girls have come
to enjoy the sport. Hopefully they
will enjoy it enough to encourage
future girls to want to play.”
The Lady Knights will open
their 2015 season against
Wahama at Point Pleasant on
Thursday, Sept. 3. The game is
scheduled for 5 p.m.

BIDWELL, Ohio — If at first you
don’t succeed, try and try again.
After almost a decade of dominating
the Ohio Valley Conference, the River
Valley volleyball program hit a little bit
of snag during its first season in the TriValley Conference Ohio Division after
going 6-6 in league play while also finishing the 2014 campaign with a 10-13
overall mark.
The Lady Raiders lost two all-league
members and four players total to graduation, but the Silver and Black have
seven seniors and five varsity returnees
from a year ago — which should allow
RVHS to once again make a push for a
volleyball league championship.

RACINE, Ohio — After ending an nineyear sectional title drought last season, the
Lady Tornadoes are hungry for more success in 2015.
The Southern volleyball team, who finished the 2014 season with a 15-6 overall
record and an 11-5 Tri-Valley Conference
Hocking Division record, return 8-of-9 rotational starters as the Purple and Gold look
aim even higher in 2015.
“I have very high expectations for our
season,” second year Southern head coach
Chris Carroll said. “We are capable of
doing great things this year led by our nine
seniors. However, we can’t just assume we
will win because of that. I think it will take
three things to get us where we want to
be. We have to work hard, be confident in
ourselves, and come together as a team.
We have 15 individuals and I want to see
us become one team.”
Among key returnees from last season
are first team all-district hitter, senior,
Jansen Wolfe, and second team all-district
setter, junior, Marlee Maynard. Along with
Wolfe, Madison Maynard and Ali Deem
return as three-year letter winners headed
into their senior season.
Southern lost three players to graduation
last spring, including starter Cierra Turley.
Looking to fill the void will be incoming junior Amanda Cole, who excelled
at Meigs last season, and junior Kamryn
Smith, who is expected to see significant
time in the rotation.
The Lady Tornadoes, who were fourth
in the league a year ago, will look to keep
Waterford from earning it’s third straight
league title this fall.
Lady Falcons aiming for more success
MASON, W.Va. — Last year
ended up being the most successful volleyball season in
the history of Wahama High
School. The Lady Falcons
have the potential to do even
better headed into the 2015
campaign.
After posting a 10-15 overall
mark and a 3-13 record within
the Tri-Valley Conference
Hocking Division last fall, the
Red and White have some
higher expectations. With five
starters and 10 varsity returnees coming back to a roster
that runs 19 players deep, the
Lady Falcons are once again
aiming to make some history.

the all-district squad.
Williams is hoping that the
experience, the depth, the familiarity and the sour taste of how last
year ended will all translate into
something better this fall. She also
noted that it will take a lot of work
to get this program back to where
it wants to be, and the girls are
aware of that headed in.

After suffering the program’s
first losing record in over two
decades, the Eastern volleyball
team is ready to get back to its
more traditional ways entering the
2015 campaign.
The Lady Eagles — who failed
to make the district tournament
last postseason for the first time in
19 years — return all six starters
and have 11 varsity players back
from a squad that went 9-14 overall and 8-8 in Tri-Valley Conference
Hocking Division play.
Though tough to deal with at
the time, third-year EHS coach
Katie Williams acknowledges that
there is now a little bit of a silver
lining to that otherwise dark cloud.
And that bright light may make a
real difference in getting the Green
and Gold back to their winning
ways.
“Honestly, losing in sectionals last year was probably one of
the best things that could have
happened to us,” Williams said.
“Nobody wanted the streak to end,
but now this group is really hungry. Now we are willing to work
and battle it out for each game.”

Lady Rebels working toward better season

MERCERVILLE, Ohio — Potentially, it could be a good season for
the South Gallia volleyball program.
The question becomes, how bad
do the Lady Rebels want it?
After a 9-14 campaign that saw
SGHS finish sixth in the TVC Hocking with a 6-10 mark, the Red and
Gold have seven players and four
starters returning to the court for
the 2015 campaign.
The Lady Rebels lost four seniors
to graduation, including All-TVC
Hocking selection Sara Bailey, but
SGHS also returns most of its attacking line — which includes senior
all-league selection Jayla Wolford.
Also returning for South Gallia are
seniors Caitlyn VanScoy, Courtney
Haner, Kirstin Burnette, Tiffany Beaver and Mariah Hineman, as well as
sophomore Erin Evans.
Those seven — with their collective experience at the upper level
— will play an important role in
guiding a 15-player roster through
the rigors of a varsity season.
SGHS coach Tracey Burnette —
who enters the second year of her
second stint in charge of the program — is looking for contributions
from everyone this fall, but she also
knows that the upperclassmen are
going to have to step up and lead
this group from the start.
“We have four starters and seven
girls with significant varsity experience, so that will hopefully be a big
help to us as we head into the season,” Burnette said. “There are also
some younger kids coming in that

in those first few matches and let
things grow from there.”

coach Suzanne Johnson believes

excited to see who steps forward

Patrick said that both newcomers, senior Justin Sizemore and freshman Andrew
Compston, will be ones to look
out for during the 2015 campaign. Patrick emphasized that
Sizemore brings “speed, speed
and more speed” to the team.
“This is Justin’s first real
venture into the sport,” Patrick
said. “I can already tell that he is
going to give us a big boost this
season.”
For Compston, Patrick thinks
he will be a great addition to the
team.
“He is a really good athlete
and is willing to learn,” Patrick
said.
With a more experienced
team this year, Patrick looks
forward to show how much his
team has improved.
“With everybody that we
have coming back who has time
under their belts, I look for a
better season than last year,”
Patrick said. “Injuries hurt us a
lot last year, and as long as we
can stay healthy I look for a little
better season.”
The Defenders open their
2015 season at Grace Christian
School on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — There
looks to be a light at the end of
the tunnel.
Despite making it to the
OCSAA Final Four, the Ohio
Valley Christian soccer team
looks to bounce back after a
4-11-2 campaign in 2014.
Last year ended a string of
winning seasons dating back
to 2009 for the Defenders. The
Blue and Gold also lost 2014
Offensive Player of the Year
Evan Bowman and Defensive
Player of the Year Phil Hollingshead to graduation.
Jeff Patrick, who will be
entering his 13th year with the
Defenders, said his team has
gotten over its rocky 2014 and
are ready to proceed.
“Numbers are down, which
has been a little discouraging
for our guys, but they’ve kind of
gotten past that,” Patrick added.
“The summer has went really
well, we’ve got some new guys
out, they are learning the game
and picking it up quick.”
The good news for OVCS
soccer fans is that many of its
players will be returning along
with some promising new faces.
Eight starters from the 2014

be leading the charge. Other

soccer team will be looking
for better results in the 2015
campaign.
“I expect all of my players
to step up on the field,” first
year Blue Devils head coach
Richard Isberner said. “I want
them to give 100 percent and
I want them to enjoy themselves. That’s my main goal,
because if they’re not enjoying the game then they aren’t
going to do well.”
Isberner, a native of Sao
Paulo, Brazil, played for Rio
Grande from 2009-2012 and
went on to play professionally
for the Wilmington Hammerheads in the United Soccer
League.

Black Knights looking for improved 2015 season

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — It’s
still a youth movement, but they aren’t
as young as they used to be.
The Point Pleasant boys soccer team
battled through some growing pains
last year after having a double-digit
freshman class contribute to the varsity
squad — which ultimately led to a
3-12-2 overall mark.
The Black Knights lost five players to graduation, and there are
only two seniors and three juniors
on the 17-man varsity roster for
2015. There are, however, 14 varsity
returnees — which includes 10 from
the sophomore class.
So once again, this season’s success
— in a lot of ways — will come down
to the play of underclassmen.
“We have 10 sophomores, which is
a bulk of our team. Over half of them
started and all of them played significant minutes last year,” Hill said. “We
have a couple of upperclassmen back
to mix in with those younger kids too,
but our team is primarily going to
come down to how well those sophomores perform with a year of experience under their belts.”
Make no mistake, however, of
how important of roles those five
upperclassmen are taking on, which
includes captain roles for senior
Daniel Depres and junior Jacob
Barss — both multi-year varsity
returnees. Hill is looking for those
veterans to help lead the charge.
Also returning from a year ago are
senior Jason Sayre, junior Brandon
Bryant, and sophomores Cole Walker,
Jacob Hussell, Justin Staats, Alex
Carlisle, Alex Lenkov, Austin Nott,

The newcomers to this year’s varsity
squad are junior Aaron Carr, as well as
freshmen Chance Martin and Luke Wilson.
A year older and a year wiser on the
field, Hill is hoping that this group’s collective knowledge of one another will
start paying dividends as this season
progresses.
“If we have learned from our experiences last year and play the way we are
capable of playing, then we can honestly
get about 75 percent of our matches,”
Hill said. “Still, with all the youth on
this roster, I want to be cautious and say
that a .500 season would be good for us.

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va.
— It will hopefully be another
year of improvement for the
Point Pleasant girls soccer
team.
The Lady Knights are coming off a season where the team
finished 9-9-1 for the year and
lost 5-3 to Nitro in the sectionals. The Red, White and Black
are also entering the 2015 campaign without three of their key
starters.
Graduation claimed the likes
of Ashtyn Wedge and Sydney
Raike — a pair of all-state honorable mention selections that
participated in the North/South
All-Star Game. PPHS also lost
Annika Vasa following her one
year as an exchange student.
Even with those loses, Point
Pleasant will be returning 12
players from last fall — including seven starters.
Point head coach Chris
Errett, who will be entering his
third season as skipper for the
Lady Knights. Errett will be
relying on senior Carlee Dabney and junior Chelsea Black
— a pair of multi-year starters
— to lead the Lady Knights
this season. Dabney recorded
nine goals and six assists during the 2014 campaign, while
Black netted five goals and four
assists.

coach and several familiar
faces returning to get the
Red and White back into the
spotlight. John Arnott will be
assuming head coaching duties
for the Falcons. Although it is
his first year, Arnott will bring
years of golf experience to a
team that has a a lot of experience itself.

Gallia Academy Golf raising expectations

GALLISPOLIS, Ohio — The
Gallia Academy golf team looks
to build upon a successful 2014.
The Blue Devils finished the
2014 campaign with a record of
84-42 and 11-9 in the SEOAL.
After finishing second in sectionals and seventh in districts,
coach Mark Allen said this year
will be about his team aiming
higher.
“We want to be among the
best teams in the district and
are shooting for the district
title and a state tournament
berth,” Allen said. “We feel we
have the talent and experience
to do that.”
This season will bring a few
firsts for the Blue and White.
This will be Gallia Academy’s
first year in the Ohio Valley
Conference after making the
move from the SEOAL in the
spring. This year will also be
the first time Gallia Academy
has fielded a girls team in its
history. Returning juniors Kimberly Edelmann and Breanna
Justice will be a part of the
5-girl team.
Although they lost AllSEOAL golfer Bruce Moreaux
to graduation, the Blue Devils
will have plenty of firepower
for the season. Seniors Dares
Hamid, Marcus Moore, Zach

and sophomore Taae Hamid
have returned to capitalize on
success from previous seasons

their high school careers.
The Blue Devils are looking
to add some new blood to their
starters this year. Juniors Josh
Davis and Jeremy Brumfield
are looking to make a bigger
impact this season after being
on the team for two years.
Davis already has secured a
starting spot for the year. Upand-coming sophomores Kaden
Thomas and John Stout are
also expected to make their
moves to be starters.
Returnees also include
sophomore Nick Denbow. Newcomers for the Blue and White
include junior Natalie Wilcoxon, sophomore Evan Lincoln
and freshmen Ian Evans, Eli
Rutherford, Molly Fitzwater
and Sydney Crothers.
With the expectations being
high, Allen is confident in his
team’s ability.
“The kids work hard and
have great attitudes,” Allen
said.
Gallia Academy’s first match
of the season will take place
on Friday, Aug. 7 at Franklin
County Golf Course. The
match is scheduled for a 9 a.m.
start time.

Southern golf team young in 2015

RACINE, Ohio — The Southern golf team is looking to gain
experience in 2015.
The Tornadoes, who are made
up of three juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen, will
look to continue where they left
off last year, as the 2014 Tornadoes were fourth in the Division
III Jaycees sectional and fourth
in the Tri-Valley Conference
Hocking Division at 9-7.
“This season we have a young
group, but they really like the
game and are competitive,”

Caldwell said. “My hope is they
will continue to work at it and
get better as the season continues. I think we can still do fairly
well in the league because some
of the other teams are young

Marauders take aim at fourth straight league title

ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio
— In an inconsistent
game, the Meigs golf
team has been as close to
a sure thing as you can
hope for.
Meigs, which has won
17 league titles dating
back to 1983, will be trying for it’s fourth straight
Tri-Valley Conference
Ohio Division crown
this season. The 2014
Marauders shared the top
spot in the league with
Vinton County, after the
two teams finished the
season with identical 36-6
records. Meigs was 11th
in the 17-team sectional
at Chillicothe Jaycees
Golf Course last season.
“We have three words
this year that we would
like to see in our players, ‘pride, integrity and
sportsmanship’,” seventh
year MHS head coach
Tom Cremeans said. “It
is very important for me
to emphasize to my players integrity and being
honest on the golf course.
It is also very important
that no matter what you
shoot, you possess the
etiquette of a gentleman’s
game such as golf.”
The 2015 Marauders will be anchored by
returning junior Chase
Whitlatch, who fired a 93
at the Division II Jaycees
sectional a year ago. Also
expected to lead MHS
this season are senior
Evan George and sophomore Levi Chapman,
who carded 97 and 99
respectively at the 2014
sectional tournament.
Meigs will be looking for
sophomore Bryce Swatzel and freshman Wyatt
Nicholson to step up as
new contributors to the
Marauders this season.
“I start out every
season encouraging my
players to have fun while
playing golf,” Cremeans
said. “Overall we are a
pretty young team and
the players are showing improvement every
practice throughout the
season.”
The Lady Marauders,
who were seventh at
the Upper Lansdowne
sectional a year ago, will
have to replace 2014
second team all-district
selection Victoria Walker,
who graduated from MHS
this past spring.

strong 2014 season could
lead to an even stronger
2015 campaign for the
River Valley golf team.
After finishing 2014
with a 38-14 record and
placing third in the TVC
Ohio standings, the Raiders come into the 2015
season with a majority of
their key starters returning, including the 2014
TVC Ohio MVP Logan
Sheets.
Raiders coach Dewey
Smith, who will be entering his fifth season with
the Black and Silver, will
look to Sheets to have
another MVP-caliber season. Along with his MVP
recognition, Sheets, who is
a senior this year, was also
an All-District Honorable
Mention in 2014 and made
it to districts in Circleville.
Sheets won’t be the only
returning Raider this year.
Senior Cliff Chapman and
junior Grant Gilmore will
also be part of the 5-man
squad for River Valley and
look to build on their success from 2014.
Juniors Chance Gillman and Brandon Cornell
will be joining the team
this year to provide more
firepower for the Raiders.
River Valley only lost one

youth for the 2015 Eastern
golf team.
With eight starters returning from a year ago, five on
the boys side and three for the
Lady Eagles, EHS will look
to improve on its 5-15 league
record from 2014.
“We have a lot of new faces
and new guys stepping up,”
Dettwiller said. “We’ve had a
good summer and we expect
have a better season this
year.”
Eastern’s boys team will
have six newcomers to the
program, junior John Little,
sophomore Garrett Chalfant,
and freshmen Jasiah Brewer,
Garrett Rees, Johnathan Harris and Ryan Harbour. Returnees for the Green and Gold
include 2014 All-TVC and
All-District selection, senior
Ty Bissell, as well as seniors
Jacob Brewer, Dillon Swatzel
and Sean Evans, and sophomore Kaleb Honaker.
The Eagles were 10th in the
2014 Division III sectional at
Jaycees Golf Course, in Chillicothe. This year’s Division III
sectional will be held at Jaycees on September 30.
The Lady Eagles, who
lost 2014 All-District golfer
Grace Edwards to graduation, return Allie Grueser,
Katelyn Edwards and Kaitlin
Hawk from last year’s starting lineup. Gruesser, a senior,
posted Eastern’s best score
at the Division II sectional at
Upper Lansdowne last year,
finishing tied for 33rd with a
score of 110.

Point Pleasant golf welcomes newcomers

— The building process continues.
The Point Pleasant golf team
enters the 2015 season with a
mix of old and new faces on the
roster, as well as a new head
coach. First year head coach
Stacey Walton said that this
year will be about integrating
the new players into the existing system.
“We’ve got a lot of seasoned
players and we have some that
have never golfed before. We’ve
got a wide range of abilities,”
Walton said. “A good season for
us would be to get the new kids
closer to where the returnees
are.”
The Big Blacks finished last
season with a fifth place finish
in the Region IV tournament
in Lavalette, W.Va. After losing
Kelsey Allbright - who earned
medalist honors in half of
Point’s dozen matches in 2014
— to graduation, the Red and
Black will have seasoned players Rhett Lanier, Matthew Martin, Bryce Tayengo and Hunter
Holcome to fall back on.
PPHS will have five new
players on the team this year,
including juniors Douglas
Workman, Austin Liptrap and
Dalton Dangerfield and freshmen Colton Fridlay and Haley
Pierson. Even with a number of
newcomers to the team, Walton
still has expectations for her
team and the program in 2015.
“We just want to stay competitive and continue to grow the
program,” Walton said. “We also
think we have a few kids that
can reach state, so we do have
some expectations this fall.”

Former head coach returns to South Gallia Golf

MERCERVILLE, Ohio —
Coming into the 2015 season,
the South Gallia golf team saw
new additions to the squad
and the return of a familiar
face as head coach.
This year marks the return
of Jeff Fowler in the coaching
position for the Red and Gold.
Fowler previously coached
for five years. Fowler said he
wants to help The Rebels’
build upon its success from
previous years and continue
to grow the program over the
next 2-3 years thanks to interest at the Junior High level.
“The excitement for the
program is because of past
program leaders,” Fowler said.
“We hope to build on that in
the coming years.”
After losing seniors Chris
Brumfield and Jordan Howell
to graduation, South Gallia
will see the return of the 1-2-3
punch of seniors Cuyler Mills,
Tristin Davis and sophomore
Curtis Haner. Fowler said their
2-4 years of experience will be
a great help to the team.
This season sees the debut
of three new players for the
Rebels: juniors Josh Henry and
Illyssa Saunders and freshman
Caleb Henry. Josh is familiar
to the South Gallia faithful as
he also plays for the Rebels
football team. Fowler said that
both Josh and Caleb are very
good athletes and Saunders is
very excited to join the team
this year.
“They add more depth and
excitement to our team,”
Fowler said.
The Rebels’ season begins
on Thursday, Aug. 13 against
Federal Hocking and Southern. The scheduled time for
the match is 4:30 p.m.

— Despite popular opinion,
13 is not always an unlucky
number.
The Point Pleasant cross
country program has reached
new heights in participation,
and this baker’s dozen of runners has also led to another
first for the program under
fifth-year coach Jessica Porter.
The Lady Knights have
six new runners to the varsity level, which will also
give PPHS its first girls team
in school history. The Black
Knights will have seven boys
total on their varsity roster,
with five of those returning
from a year ago.
In all, it’s an exciting time to
be in charge of the cross country program — and Porter is

— After a qualifying for the
OHSAA state meet in 2014
the Eastern girls cross country
team is looking for more success in 2015.
“With the girls we have
returning and the incoming
freshmen, I look for us to have
a strong season,” 11th year
Eagles head coach Josh Fogle
said. “The ninth place finish
last year at the state meet has
had a big impact on the girls
and it has showed in their
summer training.”
The Lady Eagles finished
the 2014 season with a 102-11
overall record and victories
in 8-of-11 meets. Five starters
return from last year’s team
including All-Ohioan Jessica
Cook, who was 21st in the

for the River Valley cross
country team in 2015.
The Raiders enter the
2015 campaign with positive
momentum after the 2014 season. The boys team finished
second in the TVC Ohio standings and 11 of the starters will
be returning.
After losing seniors Ethan
Hersman and Kyle Randolph
to graduation, first year coach
Darin Smith will be relying on
a number of his veteran runners to carry the Black and Silver to victory this year. Smith
said to keep an eye on senior
Jacob Kemper to make regionals this year and possibly to

SHS runners looking forward to another successful fall
2015 SHS CC Roster

RACINE, Ohio — Tornadoes hope for a return trip to
regionals in 2015.
After earning a trip to the
Division III regional meet in
Pickerington last season the
Southern Cross Country team
is looking for similar results
this season.
The Southern boys team
was second in the Tri-Valley
Conference Hocking last
year, finishing just four points
behind Belpre. The Tornadoes
finished third in the district
and 12th in the region last
year.
The Tornadoes will be
charged the task of filling a
void left by four-year starter,
All-TVC and All-District runner Bradley McCoy, who

of Eastern’s non-conference
losses were decided by one
score.
“Last year we had good
effort, but we just didn’t go as
hard as we possibly could all
the time,” Newland said. “This
year we are trying to get that
in their heads and we’re trying
to get some of our guys to get
their football IQ up. We have
some guys who really haven’t
played football in a while and
we’re looking for them to
learn.”
Eastern will have to AllOhio honorable mention
selections Christian Speelman
and Brent Welch, along with
All-Southeast District running
back Daschle Facemyer.
Key returnees for the
Green and Gold include 2014
all-state honorable mention
lineman, senior, Ross Keller,
and 2014 All-TVC receiver/
linebacker, senior Cameron
Richmond. Calling signals for
the second straight season for
EHS will be junior Jett Facemyer.
Newcomers expected to
contribute to the 2015 Eagles
include tight end Corbett
Catlett, runningback/linebacker Trenton Delacruz and
running back/defensive back
Josh Brewer.
EHS, which was 2-3 at East
Shade River Stadium last
season, will host River Valley,
Federal Hocking, Waterford,
Wahama and Belpre this season. The Eagles first home
game will be on September 11.

Lemaster and Stephan Berry
to make an impact for the Wildcats. Other newcomers include

Scott said that the Blue and
White are ready to get on the
field and redeem several losing
seasons at Hannan.
“The boys this year have been
really eager,” Scott said. “We
have 24 guys, which is a large
number for us and they’ve been
really working hard. The team
atmosphere and the optimism
that the boys have this year is
through the roof. We’re really
excited to play this season.”
The Wildcats 2015 campaign
begins at home against Montcalm on Friday, Aug. 28. The
game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

we want to go about doing
things in a successful manner.”
Toler will lean heavily on her
senior leaders, which includes
returning letterwinners Alex
Truance, Jacey Walter, Ashley
Gilmore and Courtney Smith.
Also coming back to the varsity roster this fall is junior
Angel Toler.
Coach Toler is also expecting some considerable contributions from the new varsity
players.
“We have three seniors and
three juniors new to the varsity
team, but each of them will
play a role in what we are all
ultimately looking to accomplish this season,” Toler noted.
“We all have to play well and
play together on the floor for
this to be a success.”
The newcomers to the
varsity squad include seniors
Jayanna Armstrong, Peyton
Browning and Katie Martin, as
well as juniors Emily Adkins,
Brianna McGuire and Jessi
Steele.

The Lady Falcons will
battle through the rigors of
a demanding TVC Hocking
schedule, plus have a trio of
home-and-home matches with
Ohio Valley Christian and Hannan. WHS is also scheduled
to play a pair of matches at
Huntington Saint Joseph later
in the season.
Wahama opens the 2015
campaign on Monday, Sept.
7, when it travels to Gallipolis
for a non-league matchup with

Those three starters are
seniors Anna Taylor and Lanie
Craig and junior Madison
Staggs. Taylor was the team’s
MVP in 2014, while Craig and
Staggs have developed into
solid overall players.
“I think with those three on
the court we should do pretty
well,” Craig said.
Craig also singled out sophomore Kassidee Bush as someone to look out for this season.
Bush was the MVP for the JV
squad in 2014.
Other returnees include
seniors Cassie Meadows, Clarissa Crank and Shelbee Mayes;
junior Kenzie Barker; and
sophomores McKayla Hoffman,
Megan Burns, Meagan Short
and Jessica Dalton.
While a majority of the
16-player roster will be returnees, Craig recognized freshmen
Pam Ochs and Josie McCoy as
players who could make a difference for the Blue and White.
Craig called Ochs “the fastest
girl I’ve ever coached” and said
that McCoy is a hard worker
with a ton of potential.
Other newcomers for the
2015 season include junior Taylor Scarbrough and freshman
Kiera Smith.
The Lady Wildcats’ 2015
campaign starts at Buffalo on
Thursday, Sept. 3. The match
time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

it wants to do. They have the
talent and the ability to have
a successful season, but they
also know that it’s going to
take a lot of hard work and
cohesiveness to make that happen,” Burnette said. “Playing
in a league with Southern,
Trimble, Waterford, Eastern

will never be an easy night. If
we want to win any of those
league matches, we have to
bring our best effort every
night.”
One thing working early on
in the Lady Rebels’ favor is the
schedule, as the Red and Gold
play seven of their first eight
matches at home.

players from last year’s varsity roster. The Blue Devils
2014 campaign was ended by

who claimed a 10-1 win in the
sectional semifinal.
Among key returnees are
Logan Carpenter, who was
first team All-SEOAL and first
team All-Southeast District,
Madi Oiler, who was first
team All-Southeast District,
Zach Johnson, and goalkeeper

the district.

wants his players to take away
more than just golf.
“This isn’t just about being
good at golf,” Arnott said. “I
want them to take away life
lessons, like being courteous
and respectful, as well.”
The first match of the year
for the White Falcons will be
against Waterford and Federal
Hocking on Thursday, Aug. 6
at Waterford. The scheduled
match time will be 4:30 p.m.

year ago. Freshman Cole Betzing is expected to step in and
make an immediate impact on
this team and fill the shoes of
the boys lost to graduation.
“I think that this team
will be the best I have ever
coached, as they have gained
a years maturity over last
season’s talented squad,” 23rd
year head coach Mike Kennedy
said. “We were disappointed in
not making the Regional meet
in 2014, and I believe that this
team will be deep enough to
ensure a regional spot. The big
question mark is whether or
not the boys who are also play-
ing football — Colton Atkinson, Jared Kennedy and Tyler
Williams — will be able to
contribute to the cross country
team team with their increased
playing time on Friday nights.
However, I trust that they can
handle the task and if not, the
other team members will step
up and fill that void.”
The Meigs girls cross
country team, which finished
fourth in the conference and
sixth in the district, will need
to replace Haley Kennedy and
Cheyenne Gorslene, who both
graduated last spring.
Senior Lara Perrin and
junior Gracie Hoffman are
expexted to solidify the 6
returners from last year. Freshman Taylor Swartz will look to
shadow the two front runners
help MHS on the depth charts.
“We are hoping for improvement this season, but it will
have to come from the middle
three runners,” Kennedy said.
“Lara and Gracie have run
great times, but we can not
expect them to take on more
of the burden. If we are going
to excel, the weight of success
will be on senior Sadie Fox
and sophomore Caitlyn Rest. I
believe that those two can get
it done. We must stay injury
free this year to reach our
goals, as we are not extremely
deep.”
Meigs, which starts the
season at the Wellston Invitational on August 29, will host
an invitational on Wednesday,
Sept. 30.

team for the first time is great.
Hopefully they’ll continue
to work hard and enjoy this
sport more as the season progresses.”
The boys return three
seniors in Hunter White,
Brandon Henderson and
Brandon Hall, as well as junior
Byron Fisher and sophomore
Wyatt Dean. The varsity newcomers for the Black Knights
are senior Bradley Gibbs and
freshman Tanner Durst.
White became the school’s
record-holder in cross country
last fall by posting a time of
18:00.67. White will also serve
as the team captain this fall.
On the girls side of things,
there are three seniors in
Macy Adkins, Makinley
Higginbotham and Karissa
Cochran. Junior Carson Bonecutter, as well as freshmen
Allison Henderson and Chloe
Jones, round out the Lady
Knights’ roster.

2015 campaign on Saturday,
Sept. 5, when it travels to

kids that could possibly be running at the state meet later on
this fall and competing in two

definitely help our cause. We’re
excited about the upcoming
season.”
There is plenty of room for
optimism within the program,
as the boys and girls are returning a combined 23 runners
from the varsity squad a year
ago. More importantly, only
one of the 24-person roster is
new to the varsity ranks —
making both the Blue Devils
and Blue Angels quite experienced headed into this season.
The boys team has 15 runners this year, with 14 of those

“Hannah is a key leader
on the team,” Smith said.
“Leanne was hurt last year and
should help a lot this year. I
see Kenzie making regionals
and possibly states.”
The Raiders will be welcoming several newcomers
this season as well. Junior
Chance Gillman and freshmen
Caleb McKnight and Andrew
Tucker are expected to make
returning from last fall. The
Blue Devils also do not have
a single senior on the roster,
which means that a progression this fall could only lead to
bigger things down the road.
Back from a year ago are
juniors Cade Mason, Devon
Barnes, Kaleb Crisenberry,
Kirk Saunders and Mitchell
Bolin, as well as sophomores
Ethan Rider, Ezra Blain, Colin
Little, Cody Rodgers, Kobe
Cochrane, Oliver Davis, Kyle
Greenlee, Caleb Greenlee and
Tanner Allen. The single newcomer to the varsity squad is
freshman Nicholas Sheets.
May spoke about the expectations for his boys team
headed into the season.
“We have four teams move
on to regionals from our district, and I really think our
boys can be one of those four
teams. These guys are capable
of making a move to that next
level,” May said. “These guys
are working hard and they are
growing. All of them are a lot
faster than they were a year
ago.”
On the girls side, all nine

Smith said that Hollingsworth
could potentially be the number two girl on the team after
all is said and done.

and fifth runner headed into
the season,” May said. “We are
hoping to have that straightened out by the time we head
into tournament, but we have
the potential to be a regional
qualifier if things work out.”
The Gallia Academy cross
country teams will open their
season at the Circleville Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 5.
