in 1910 the 4-horsepower, 30-cubic-inch single used
new cylinder barrels with more cooling fns. this was
the fnal year for radial cooling fns on the cylinder head.
engineering introduced a belt idler mechanism that
allowed the rider to stop the motorcycle without killing
the engine. to improve power transmission to the rear
wheel, engineering widened the fat leather belt from 1.5
to 1.75 inches. Harley-Davidson manufactured 334 of
these motorcycles in 1910, selling them for $250 apiece.
the name “peashooter” came from the “pop-pop-pop” sound the
single-cylinder engine exhaust made. the company derived this racing
motor from production pieces starting in the early 1920s to meet
the rules for a new national racing championship class under 350cc
(21.35 cubic inches) that commenced in 1926. the regular production
21.1-cubic-inch a and B singles ft this displacement limitation perfectly.
an effective dual-port cylinder head improved breathing over the stock
production singles in Harley-Davidson’s lineup. Bosch developed a
compact magneto, nicknamed “the Baby,” for ignition.

at the close of World War ii, Harley-Davidson obtained rights to copy
and produce the DKW 125cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine as part
of the war reparations from Germany. the compact engine, which
was mated to a three-speed foot-shift transmission, developed 1.7
horsepower. in mid-1948 the company introduced its frst motorcycle
powered by this engine, the Model S. the new “peanut” tank carried
1.875 gallons of gas/oil pre-mix. it returned 70 miles to a gallon of
fuel and could reach 35 to 40 miles per hour. this was a tremendously
successful model for Harley-Davidson. the company manufactured
10,117 of these lightweights, a fgure that accounted for one-third of
all Motor company production for 1948. this bike sold for $325.
