Bula and welcome to the Eighteenth edition of our FBC
Bula and welcome to the Eighteenth edition of our FBC Fan Club Newsletter! Once again we bring you up to date with the latest FBC events, our local shows on FBC TV and the best shows on our radio stations. We also introduce you to one of our staff members in the news department. For those who love to cook our FBC team has some yummy recipes for you, including a special one for the children. Our community spotlight this month focuses on Dehydration, so read and be aware. BATI NI TANOA - TAVUA Date: 25th October Time: 6pm – 10:30pm Venue: Garvey Park, Tavua Featuring our Bati ni Tanoa personalities Nimi, Ben, Lopo and Charlie! The show began with Bula FM birthday dedication whereby the crowd was treated to Bula gm birthday cake! Our house band for the night was Waikoula kei Tavua who is originally from Tavua which made it even more successful as they were playing for their family and friends in their hometown. Despite the weather, crowds turned up in numbers to see their TV celebrities perform live with their jokes and natural Fiji humour and local dance skills entertain the crowd for almost 4 hours! The event also had food stalls and light stalls to keep the children busy and also keep the stomachs full. This event also featured the very first Bati ni Tanoa Tshirts, which was also a hot commodity on the night with only three t-shirts unsold. XL sizes were the first to finish on the night! Our next Bati Ni Tanoa show will be in Labasa in January! So keep checking our FBC TV and listening into our six stations for more information! PARK JAM - LAUTOKA Date: 15th November Time: 6pm – 11:30pm Venue: Carnival Grounds, Lautoka This event was created to target the whole family of all ethnic backgrounds. Therefore we had a wide selection of performances that featured well with our multicultural community in Lautoka. We also had tones of food stalls, rides for the kids, candyfloss etc. We had buses come from Ba on the night for those that wanted to be part of this event. Not only were the crowd there to see the show, they were also there to see and meet their favourite personalities. We had crowds of people visiting the backstage and calling our personalities by name and saying hello and wanting to take pictures with them. We had a kid in a wheel chair just come to visit to meet his favourite breakfast show hosts, Tix and Sophie. The event was a huge success in the Lautoka with the local business displaying fireworks during the event which made it look like it was part of the event. With temperatures in Fiji hitting over 33 degrees this festive season, everyone needs to be aware of the dangers that dehydration can pose to one’s health. So read and be aware. What is dehydration? Water is a critical element of the body, and keeping the body adequately hydrated is a must to allow the body to function. Up to 75% of the body’s weight is made up of water. Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in. The body is very dynamic and always changing. This is especially true with water in the body. We lose water routinely when we: • breathe and humidified air leaves the body (this can be seen on a cold day when you can see your breath in the air, which is just water that has been exhaled); • sweat to cool the body; and • Eliminate waste by urinating or having a bowel movement. What are the signs and symptoms of dehydration? The body’s initial responses to dehydration are thirst to increase water intake, and decreased urine output to try to conserve water loss. The urine will become concentrated and more yellow in colour. As the level of water loss increases, more symptoms can become apparent. The following are further signs and symptoms of dehydration. • Dry mouth • The eyes stop making tears • Sweating may stop • Muscle cramps • Nausea and vomiting • Heart palpitations • Light-headedness (especially when standing) • Weakness • Decreased urine output With severe dehydration, confusion and weakness will occur as the brain and other body organs receive less blood. Finally, coma, organ failure, and death eventually will occur if the dehydration remains untreated. How much water should one drink? In a normal day, a person has to drink a significant amount of water to replace this routine loss. The formula for daily fluid requirements depends upon an individual’s weight. Normally, fluid and weight are calculated using the metric system; however, below is the approximation in imperial units. There have been tears, laughter, joy, pain and glory amongst others that have been experienced by players, participants and fans alike. Whether you are a fan or a neutral, you sure will have a memory entrenched about a particular sporting event. As I begin to sign off for 2013, I want to take this time out to thank all our fans of Fiji Broadcasting Corporation via our six radio stations and FBC TV. Pleasing your demands was our priority and for sure we can say that we have learnt lots in the process. This has helped us to begin preparation for 2014, where we promise to come out with bigger and better sporting coverage. But one thing is for sure, that without you the listeners and viewers, we will not have been able to be where we are right now. So a big thanks to you and happy holidays to you folks. And one best thing to happen to Fijian sports in 2013 has to be Ben ‘Peni’ Ryan, the national sevens coach. This former England mentor has transformed the code and heading into the New Year, we can surely say that our dream for the 206 Olympics is firmly on track. Starting with the Coral Coast 7s, where I met Ryan up in the commentary box, next to ours, he was watching every game. This certainly made us sit up and take notice. I mean when was the last time we had mentor watching every single game in a tournament and then ticking his side for the tournaments. He showed great enthusiasm in trying to learn more about each player, he selected and just looking at his humble doings, it was a delight. Ryan is somewhat of a rare commodity and yes his side may win and lose tournaments between now and then, but the eye is on that first ever gold at the Olympics. All we can say is all the best Peni! Another code, which made Fiji proud, was rugby league. Who can forget the last month when the Vodafone Fiji Bati equaled their 2008 success and reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. Not since sevens rugby, have we been so near to lifting a World Cup title. Yes the big loss to Australia in the semi-final was heart wrenching, but sure the Bati have take this sport to another level. This doesn’t stop here because it is the start of bigger and brighter things to come for the sport. Apart from all these, we have had the Pacific Mini Games, football tournaments, netball competitions amongst others. Kudos to all the sporting organizations. Now let’s wait for 2014 to see what it brings on the field. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. King Garlic Prawn Ingredients • 1 middle size octopus (cooked & cut in pieces) • Cleaned & precooked seafood such as oyster & mussels. • 1 large coconut scraped • 2 large tomatoes • 2 medium onions • Pinch of salt to add to the taste • Fresh ginger & garlic would be ideal to add to flavour. PREPARATION • • • Combine all ingredients in one pan and add coconut milk. Put to boil and let it cook for 10 - 15mins and remove immediately. Ideal Saturday lunch, serve with lemons & chillies. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN: Here’s an easy recipe the kids can follow to bake Christmas Shortbread. Parent Supervision is a must! Christmas Shortbread Ingredients: • • • • • • • • 200g butter, room temperature 90g caster sugar 270g plain flour 60g corn flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup Kraft Cheddar Cheese grated 3 spring onions Directions: • • • • • Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer (or hand-held electric mixer) until well combined. Sift plain flour, corn flour and baking powder into butter mixture, add salt and beat on low speed until mixture comes together in a ball. Transfer to a floured surface and knead lightly. Divide mixture in two and roll into sausages about 2.5-3cm in diameter. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 130°C and lightly butter baking trays. Cut sausages into 1cm widths and place on trays. Sprinkle with extra caster sugar and bake for 1 hour.
