March 20, 2016 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord 1883-2016 . A Palm Sunday Prayer .. . . Strengthen our faith on . . . this Palm Sunday, Lord . . . Give us the grace and . courage to follow you this .. . Holy Week from death to .. . resurrection, from darkness .. . to the fullness of light. . . . Hosanna! Pastor: Reverend G. Isaiah’s beautiful description of his vocation could serve as a call for all Christians and people of faith: a gift from God, the willingness of people to use that gift, and the fortitude to withstand hardship. Think in terms of your own faith life. What abilities has God given you? How have you shared them? When have you felt tempted to turn from them? Know that in the end, God is your help and you will not be put to shame. WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE, & WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH. ST. JOSEPH’S PAGE TWO . . . . . . . FROM THE PASTOR . . . . . . . . My Dear Parish Family, . . . . It was just 9 days ago. I was standing on the hillside of the . Mount of Olives, looking west across the Kidron Valley and up . . to the (now sealed) ‘Golden Gate’ to Jerusalem – tracing the . . penultimate journey of Jesus’ life as he made his triumphant . . entry to the sounds of the crowd waving palm branches and . . singing “Hosanna to the son of David!” And, today we com. . memorate that great event through this Palm Sunday liturgy. . . How awesome it must have been, yet so tragic to have that tri. umph turned into sorrow in just a few short days. Soon enough, . . . Jesus would be back in the garden on the Mount of Olives, . praying and sweating drops of blood as his hour drew near. . . Then came his last trip from the Mount of Olives, back into . . Jerusalem at night, having been betrayed by a friend. Please, . take the opportunity this week to enter into this great drama and .. . pray with Jesus the liturgies of Holy Week. . . . . When Jesus was arrested for his teachings there was not as yet . the Church or Christianity, merely intolerance and jealousy. . . Today, problems are the same and Christians throughout the . world are being persecuted terribly. Two weeks ago in Yemen, .. . uniformed gunmen entered the Missionaries of Charity care . . facility for the elderly, handcuffed four of the nuns and 12 . others, then shot them in the head. A priest who was staying at .. . the facility was taken and missing since the attack. . . . Pope Francis has called the Sisters “martyrs of today” as “they . . gave their blood for the Church.” The Holy Father "prays that . . this pointless slaughter will awaken consciences, lead to a . . change of heart, and inspire all parties to lay down their arms . . and take up the path of dialogue." I encourage us all to pray . . likewise and do what we can do to help the Christians of the . . Middle East. . . . God bless you. . . . . Fr. Scott . . . . . Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan . . a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the . . foundation of humility. . . —Saint Augustine (354-430) . . O’CONNELL, C.M. Mercy helps us understand the Resurrection. In the Letter of Peter we read: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who, according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again to a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1: 3).” Mercy gives rise to a hope that would not be possible had Jesus not risen from the dead. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
