About the Director
EDRA TOTH was born in Budapest and left as a
small child with her family during the Hungarian
uprising in 1956, relocating to Boston. While in
Boston, the founder of The Boston Ballet E. Virgina
Williams reached out to Toth, granting her a
scholarship to attend her
ballet school and pursue
the art, love and discipline
of dance. Between the
ages of 10 and 13, Toth
received three Ford
Foundation Scholarships.
Through this amazing gift,
her parents’ hard work,
and her own
perseverance and
determination, Toth soon
made her debut with the
Boston Ballet at age 13,
advancing to Prima
Ballerina a few years later
(below). As the years passed, the young dancer
worked all over the world, dancing leading roles for
Boston Ballet in: Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Le
Corsaire, Romeo and Juliet, and Tchaikovsky’s The
Nutcracker, among many other classics. Toth was
also honored to perform at our nation’s Capitol before
President Lyndon B. Johnson.
THROUGH poverty, pain, and great tribulation from a
young age, Toth channeled these experiences through
the art and beauty of ballet. Naturally, she began
teaching others to dance, and eventually moved her
studio from Boston to New Hampshire where there was a
greater need to offer the classical and professional
training and experience that was given her. NBT now
stands out uniquely as the ballet company in New
Hampshire that values not only expertise in training and
skill, but holds even more highly the heart, mind and soul
of the dancer—without which, Toth says, one cannot truly
dance. Out of this pure passion and love for dance, along
with her deep desire to help dancers be the best they
can be, Toth has increasingly made a positive impact on
the youth, our community, and generations yet to come.
